Obama to Renew Muslim Outreach, Right Wing Blogs Freak Out

Shoot first, reach out never
US News • Views: 19,717

It’s one phony outrage after another for the right wing blogosphere; today they’re all lathered up into a fine frothy rage because President Obama is going to renew Muslim outreach.

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama is preparing a fresh outreach to the Muslim world in coming days, senior U.S. officials say, one that will ask those in the Middle East and beyond to reject Islamic militancy in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death and embrace a new era of relations with the U.S.

Mr. Obama is preparing to deliver that message in a wide-ranging speech, perhaps as early as next week, these officials say. The president intends to argue that bin Laden’s death, paired with popular uprisings sweeping North Africa and the Middle East, signal that the time has come to an end when al Qaeda could claim to speak for Muslim aspirations.

This is anathema to the right, who are stuck in a fantasy war with the entire religion of Islam. You have to ask: if they’re so opposed to diplomacy with the Muslim world, what’s their alternative? Right wing bloggers are so bigoted and deranged over this issue, the only solution they can possibly embrace is violence and war.

That's exactly what they long for. That, and lots of war porn. See Pam Geller's obsession with violent imagery, for one.

Oh how I miss the days when the only important thing in the world was "The war on Radical Islam!" (tm)

Whew.....and I thought that the outrageous outrage of the right for the day we would have to discuss would be inviting some rapper to the White House.

How will our military contractors feed their little bitty children so they can grow up to be big and strong and have little bitty children of their own if we don't go to war with the entire Muslim world?

I think so. They have been very dishonest in the past about their involvement with Hamas and the Brotherhood. I think about a half dozen CAIR employees have been convicted of terrorism charges. They are more part of the problem than a potential part of the solution.

They imagine a world at war, one in which their cause is considered so just and self-evident that no one dare challenge it, in which every continent is the scene of great battles, and they look REALLY good on the recruiting posters.

In other worlds, they want a sort of futuristic version of WWII, except I'm not totally sure they're the side they think they are...and also, they want no rationing, no personal inconvenience, and they sure as shit won't be sending their own sons to do the heavy lifting.

re: #22 SanFranciscoZionist

Yup.

The paranoid spokesman sees the fate of conspiracy in apocalyptic terms—he traffics in the birth and death of whole worlds, whole political orders, whole systems of human values. He is always manning the barricades of civilization. He constantly lives at a turning point. Like religious millenialists he expresses the anxiety of those who are living through the last days and he is sometimes disposed to set a date fort the apocalypse. (“Time is running out,” said Welch in 1951. “Evidence is piling up on many sides and from many sources that October 1952 is the fatal month when Stalin will attack.”)

As a member of the avant-garde who is capable of perceiving the conspiracy before it is fully obvious to an as yet unaroused public, the paranoid is a militant leader. He does not see social conflict as something to be mediated and compromised, in the manner of the working politician. Since what is at stake is always a conflict between absolute good and absolute evil, what is necessary is not compromise but the will to fight things out to a finish. Since the enemy is thought of as being totally evil and totally unappeasable, he must be totally eliminated—if not from the world, at least from the theatre of operations to which the paranoid directs his attention. This demand for total triumph leads to the formulation of hopelessly unrealistic goals, and since these goals are not even remotely attainable, failure constantly heightens the paranoid’s sense of frustration. Even partial success leaves him with the same feeling of powerlessness with which he began, and this in turn only strengthens his awareness of the vast and terrifying quality of the enemy he opposes.

Sorta on topic, I spoke to gentleman in the great state of Texas this morning about a national legal scandal I can't really be very public about. Suffice to say, I'm sort of a witness, and this case is coming to head.

Anyway, we were talking about the violent tendencies of the defendants, which I experienced first hand, and is just another reason I like to keep my Ithaca model 37 handy even more than my Romeos.

"You have a shotgun, and you're from Washington?!" he asked incredulously.

"Yeah, so..."

"Gee, I didn't know 'you people up there' had guns. I mean in Texas it's one thing, but..."

"Yeah, up here we go hunting - with shotguns - in our Birkenstocks. You didn't know that?"

Back on topic, the GOP and wingnuts would like to believe if you're not a freakin' stormtrooper ready to lay waste any time the mood strikes you, or you find someone annoying, you're a gutless liberal worm. Diplomacy is for pussies. Trying to reshape issues is for pussies. Intelligent targeting is for pussies. Anything less than a scatter pattern of state of the art munitions is for pussies.

There are indeed folks out there who appear to believe that no one who votes blue owns guns, hunts, works for a living, or in any other way resembles them. I've met a few.

And yeah, the wingnuts despise diplomacy in all forms, which is why poor ol' Neville Chamberlain remains their go-to example of a man who didn't embrace all-out war. There is no nuance, there is no chance of working anything out. This is war, this is the clash of cultures, and either we win, or they do. Not saying all the bad things you think about Muslims loudly is appeasement. Not attacking all Muslims everywhere at once is appeasement. Suggesting that Oklahoma is not under attack from sharia law is appeasement. Thinking that the guy dancing on the altar in St. Peter's is just a nut is suicide. They use 'suicidal' a lot. Almost everything is suicidal. Especially the rule of law, and civilized standards of behavior, which have got to go AT ONCE if we are going to survive this assault by people who have no rule of law, or civilized standards of behavior.

The fact that they cannot get adult statesmen who have to get shit done to sign on to this plan is a source of constant self-righteous frustration to them.

I have read at least one hundred times on various rightwing blogs that the solution to the "Muslim problem" is to turn the entire middle east into "a giant radioactive sheet of blackened glass" in some form or another.

Yes there really are people who think of that as a viable option apparently. At least they don't seem to be joking to me. The genocide of millions, almost all of whom are completely innocent, in order to kill a few thousand terrorists...

Yet I'll bet if they were asked they would still righteously condemn Hitler for the Holocaust and never see a bit of irony...sigh. :(

They have become the mirror image of the violent Islamists.

They despise them, but they also believe that they are stronger than we are. They believe that a pluralist society is weak at its core.

They are a little fucked in the head.

"You want to get these people? I mean, you really want to reach in and kill them where they live? Keep accepting more than one idea. It makes them absolutely crazy."

Josh Lyman said that about Islamist terrorists. Pity is, it applies to some folks who think they're fighting terrorism.
