A good part of the cleaning up is automatic — their system rejects posts with certain words like “black” or “Muslim” (and, amusingly, any post with the words “Rupert Murdoch”) in it. A lot of it also gets cleaned up by the few sane people who happen to be there at any particular time and flag posts that contain deliberately misspelled racial slurs. I don’t know what remaining part is done by humans, but I’d assume right now it’s a lot.

I love how the same crowd who argues that illegal aliens should be shot if they get caught crossing the border are screaming that killing Bin Laden was illegal.

I won’t even pretend to take that line of debate seriously, unless it’s coming from someone who realistically might have taken the same line under Bush. Not because I’d agree with them, but because it would be clear it was actually their opinion.

Most of these guys would have cheered their fool heads off if Bin Laden had been captured, extradited to the US and shot without trial on the White House lawn—so long as it happened during a Republican presidency.

But at the top of the heap of the GOP mentality is the so called “objectivist” philosophy of the GOP. It forms a pseudo-intellectual veneer full of pretentious language to a program of glorified greed and indifference to others. Much can b blamed on the rather evil writings of Ayn Rand. Ron Paul liked this woman so much he named his son after her. She is the favorite author of Newt Gingrich, Clarance Thomas, Barton and of course, the Koch brothers. To be fair to Rand, greedy evil bastards would be that way without her, but she gave them high language to appear reasonable with.

Without exaggeration, it is an utterly self absorbed and self serving view of the world that would be very difficult to get further from normal definitions of goodness. She was born in Russia, got out from under the communist system after having been a teacher there. After coming to America, she insinuated herself into a certain NY intellectual and financial set. She developed a G-dless economic theory that is in all ways an exact counterpoint to the Stalinists and Marxism in general.

The central tenant she rejects is altruism and an individuals duty to other lesser people “bums” and “moochers.” She goes so far as to adamantly argue that altruism itself is evil. Her answer is a perverse and extreme view of Adam Smith which is in of itself unworkable without some form of limitless energy.

What is it with conservatives and the inability to understand that energy is conserved?

She wrote: “My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.”


The implied philosophy of the ubermensch - the “individual as hero” as she put it, echoes Nietszche less than what fascists made of him. This is not lost on Americans who flirt with fascism. It is proof that taking an insane template and arguing the opposite, based solely on philosophy with no contact in the real world will produce an equally crazy result. As such, it is just as delusional, just as unrealistic in the actual world, just as heartless and just as utterly unworkable as Stalinism. However, it does very much appeal to the plutocrat. In this view, he is no longer shackled by any duty to society. In fact, society exists to serve him as he is the only one who drives it. Altruism leads to socialism. Socialism destroys all freedom. Freedom while defined in abstract and high language reduces to enjoying the benefits of the social contract yet none of the duties. So the cant goes….

But don’t take my word for it. Look at her and her philosophy for itself. You hear it dripping from the gorged mouths of plutocrats everyday. They are each convinced that they personally earned what they have and than no-one and no circumstance helped them and because of that owe nothing to society or anyone else. Simply evil.

It always amused me when I was told by right wingers that Ann Coulter was “hot” and used as an example why conservative women are more beautiful than liberal women. Well there is the secret of guys like us getting the most beautiful women.

If a woman is truly beautiful and very smart, this society puts her at a tremendous disadvantage. The average pretty sorority types hate her and other women hiss in her presence. When she opens her mouth and is much smarter, then feminine insecurity does the rest.

With men, they already think they have no chance so when she opens her mouth and says something smart, they turn to complete jerks. Masculine insecurity does the rest.

The upshot is that such women are often very lonely and feel terribly isolated.

If you can talk to one of them intelligently without having your ego threatened, have reasonable manners and actually care about her ideas like you would with anyone else, getting a date is easy.

Well first off good luck.

Second of all C is always failing in grad school. However, I have never met a prof who gives them out freely. Hopefully she is no exception to this.

Any professor can make a test that is simply too much for the class. There is always a difference between what you think you covered, what was actually covered and what the students actually could be reasonably expected to absorb. That is what the curve is for. If your classes bombed a test, the assumption should not be that they are stupid, but rather that you over did the exam.

If it makes you feel any better, I was once convinced I had bombed a certain final utterly - it was Goldstein, classical mechanics. I had never walked out of an exam feeling I had stunk up a place so badly.

By absolute standards I had. I only got a 68 out of 100.

It turned out that was the highest grade in the class by 20 points. This was not because I was clever. It was because I happened to remember that a certain integral converged to pi/2. That saved my about 20 minutes that allowed me to work on more of the exam. It was a matter of trivia that saved me.

The point is that the exam was ridiculous for the class and the time considerations. That sometimes happens, and most professors recognize this.

Huckabee did a stint as a morbidly obese man. At some point he recognized that this wasn’t a good idea and trimmed down big time. Now he’s on the same side of the aisle as Michelle with regard to this one issue.

And he’s honest enough to actually say so, rather than pretending that oh, it’s different because she wants to MAKE people eat healthy, blah blah.

Huckabee has lost ground with me lately, a lot of it, but he’s still more fair-minded and good-hearted than a lot of the field he’s running in.

Still a theocrat. Still think he’d make a great next-door neighbor, though.

Really? I don’t recall anyone commenting on Nancy Reagan with nearly the level of hatred or racism. I don’t recall it being nearly so widespread.

I do recall many complaints that she had a reputation as a mean person who treated people “like the help.” I don’t recall anyone using the term wookie as a new form of the N word about her, or calling her physique names openly or disparaging her earned achievements.

Of course Nancy never went to Princeton either and was well kinda dumb.

If a woman is truly beautiful and very smart, this society puts her at a tremendous disadvantage. The average pretty sorority types hate her and other women hiss in her presence. When she opens her mouth and is much smarter, then feminine insecurity does the rest.

With men, they already think they have no chance so when she opens her mouth and says something smart, they turn to complete jerks. Masculine insecurity does the rest.

The upshot is that such women are often very lonely and feel terribly isolated.

If you can talk to one of them intelligently without having your ego threatened, have reasonable manners and actually care about her ideas like you would with anyone else, getting a date is easy.

That’s not such a bad deal for the lady. She could do worse than your sort.

It’s going to take a lot of hand-washing for Fox to deny that this is representative of their target audience. We’ll probably get some sugar-coated “only a few extremists” talk, but not much else.

One unfortunate unintended consequence of the internet is that whack jobs and buffoons can congregate in one “place” and therefore make themselves feel powerful and somewhat “normal.” It’s the echo chamber thing. Surely Fox has a way to ban people who post this kind of crap. There can’t be tens of thousands of folks with internet accounts doing this.

We’re talking about the same petty, jealous assholes who made dog jokes about Chelsea Clinton when she was a kid. Comments about Michelle Obama’s looks are not surprising at all. Some people just can’t look past their grade-school mentality to talk policy disagreements. They’d rather just be assholes.

That said, I think she’s a pretty woman. I don’t think she’s a supermodel, but she’s attractive and knows her body well enough to dress in a flattering way. And the girls are going to be gorgeous when they get older.

I drove across country, back from the Tetons and saw some of the devastation from the floods in the mid 90’s…my folks were in Iowa with the Red Cross, 20mi off the interstate and I could not reasonably stop to see them….sheets of water to the horizon

That didn’t happen with Margaret Thatcher. I’m guessing the first woman to be president will be conservative [Republican? depends if that party survives]. A conservative woman will get the conservative vote because she’s a conservative, and she’ll earn some fence-sitter’s votes because she’s a woman.
