There was a production of "Swan Lake, Minnesota" produced by Joseph Papp for PBS. No video of it seems to be available. The best bit was a shot of a tractor returning through the fields, with the classically-dressed body of the Swan draped over the fender.

It's all some revisionist history fantasy. This country has been in conflicts that used the military, even if not outright declared wars, for a significant portion of our 235 years. Yes, today with our professional military it's costing us more and we use bigger/faster weapons, but the idea that somehow the US was engagement-free in our past is fantasy.

Osama bin Laden's wife has told interrogators she didn't venture outside the walled compound where the al Qaeda leader was killed for five years, a Pakistani military spokesman said Thursday. The wife, who was wounded in the raid, said she lived in the compound in Abbottabad with eight of bin Laden's children and five others from another family[Link: ac360.blogs.cnn.com...]

In "The Osama bin Laden I Know", Peter Bergen spoke with Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir, who met bin Laden soon after the 9/11 attacks. Mir said bin Laden had told him that he had plans for his youngest daughter, Safiyah.

Oh god. This is awkward. I had an interview last Friday for an internship, but had to reschedule at the last minute because I was busy puking my guts out that morning due to school-related stress and bad food. I asked the guy if we could reschedule and never heard back. I assumed that because we'd been playing tag for ages and had scheduling snafus before that he'd written me off and that would be that.
On Monday, I got a last minute offer to come in for an interview with a different company. I went there yesterday and walked out with a job. Now the first guy just emailed me tonight to ask if I had time to meet him tomorrow. I have no idea how to handle this. What do I even say?

We are a Great Nation. We have not always been a good nation. We are still an experiment of what we can 'get our minds around'. I don't really know what that means exactly, but it kind of reflects what our country is all about.
We can do whatever may be in our nations self interest, or we can work to do something that, I think we have all been taught..'leave a place better than you found it", I don't think they are at all exclusive of one another.
I would like to think that a major reason for our efforts in Afghanistan right now, though not the original reason, are to protect and advance the rights of Women, in a very archaic society. To me, it is one of the only moral reasons that we should be there. That expands into dialog with Islam, to further these goals.
I just don't want a world where the far right Christian movement, intersects somehow with Israel, and has a 'Hurry Sundown', affect.

I'm not a Southerner, but...uh...THERE ARE SHITLOADS OF THEM!!! JESUS!!! The South is a hugely historical region which produced an entirely unfair number of our greatest politicians, explorers, artists, food and music.
I AM a Southerner (well, sort of -- Texas did fight in the Confederacy, after all) and that kind of crap is both nauseating and tedious. I get so aggravated when people act like the Rebel flag is the only thing that has any historical value from the South.

After all, there is no White History Month, no South Day, or Southern History Month for the south. Other people have special things the South doesn't, and people want them to get rid of the only symbol of heritage and history they have by claiming it specifically stands for slavery. Fair is fair. The South is socially and historically remarkable. A lot of history, good and bad, and the bad is BAAAD. But all fascinating, and very essential to what America is.
(I was once at a dreadful teacher's education workshop where some dingbat woman was going on about how she had her high schoolers research their families' heritage, and it was terrible, because the black kids didn't UNDERSTAND, and thought their families were FROM Alabama or wherever. She wanted them to talk about Africa. We had a rowdy-dow in which I ranted about the enormous historical and cultural significance of the South to California's black communities, and asked pointedly how many white kids in her class could trace their ancestry back three hundred and fifty years in this essay. It was bad. I was basically told off by everyone.)

ProLifeLiberal, this one's for you:
Expats leave good life behind to join Libyan revolution
Benghazi, Libya (CNN) -- Twenty-eight-year-old Bashir says he used to have an idyllic life: A well-paid job as a software developer, good friends and comfortable surroundings in Canada.
"I'm a guy who smokes, listens to rock and roll, and enjoys my life," he says.
Now he's sleeping in a tent, eating rationed food and learning to shoot a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), among other weapons, in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in Libya.
Bashir is originally from the capitol Tripoli. His family members still live there. He is one of several men in a newly formed fighting unit made up of others who decided to return to their homeland to fight against Moammar Gadhafi's regime.
The drastic decision to leave his comfortable life in Canada was prompted by the bloody images he was seeing on the news every night.
"I tried to stay there and live with it, just to send money or collect donations and go and protest and stuff. But I realized that that's not enough. And I could not sleep; I could not work."
Bashir has no trouble working now and he says he has a lot to learn. For one thing he's never held a gun before. He is one of more than 85 men, many from abroad, who now live together, train together and pray together on a walled piece of property loaned to them by a rebel supporter.
The man they agreed to make Commander, Mahedi, has come in from Ireland. Some of the others say they arrived from France, Greece, Poland, Italy, and Spain. None have previous military experience so they are being trained by older men in Benghazi who do.
Interestingly, they're carrying FN rifles, rather than AKs.

A couple of years ago, I assumed I had no one in the country before 1890 or so, but we've recently learned that the English/Dutch/German quarter of the family actually appears to go back to the earliest New England colonies, and then headed south to New York. I've been meaning to find out more about the Civil War connection. All I have right now is a comment that one couple moved at one point because they wanted to raise the kids in a free state.
172 | HappyWarrior Thu, May 12, 2011 9:13:44pm |
On the subject of fiction, I guess it's because I've only recently gotten in to reading fiction since I've become an English minor but I find it tough to name characters. I also find it all too tempting to be autobiographical with my protagonists. The idea of a story about a return serviceman from WWI or WWII or even Korea is something appeals to me though. The idea of re-adjusting to society after years away from home is something that appeals to me.

The piece is set in California, and two of the main characters grew up there, but the third is from the East originally, and her parents were active abolitionists. Very interesting research. (My mother thinks she must have been at that party that Matthew Broderick is at in the opening scenes of Glory).

That's neat. See, I want to set my in an industrial city on the east coast. Make the characters either immigrants themselves or the children of them. The reason I want to write in the post WWI setting is that I fell in love with HBO's Boardwalk Empire and I read some of my grandmother's writings and she grew up in the late 1910's and 20's. And I can't help but to think of Kelly MacDonald's, Mrs. Schroder character when I read about my great grandmother. IT's the Irish thing.

re: #172 HappyWarrior
On the subject of fiction, I guess it's because I've only recently gotten in to reading fiction since I've become an English minor but I find it tough to name characters. I also find it all too tempting to be autobiographical with my protagonists. The idea of a story about a return serviceman from WWI or WWII or even Korea is something appeals to me though. The idea of re-adjusting to society after years away from home is something that appeals to me.
For first names, Social Security has a record of the top 1000 baby names recorded in the United States for every year after 1880. (I also found a list of early Mt. Holyoke women's given names which I am using shamelessly, as it gives a delightful cross-section of names given to college girls born between 1820 and 1850. Some charming old-fashioned things.)

I don't. Those people were either Communists or Communist-supporters. Libya has a chance to avoid tyranny entirely, whereas had the Lincoln Brigades won, Stalin would have seen them purged to eliminate any potential rivals.

I read the story on how the current constitutional monarch of Spain tricked Franco. Awful stuff. He basically convinced Franco that he'd keep the fascist dictatorship in Spain after Franco died and got Franco to name him his heir. And then after Franco died, he made Spain in to a constitutional republic and limited his own power dramatically. Plus as some of you may recall he famous asked Hugo Chavez to shut up. Not often I say "You go, King!" but for Juan Carlos, I make an exception.

What do you do with surnames? For me, what's difficult is the question of how to go about. Do I go with a common surname? Or do I go with one that exists within my own family tree and is fairly obscure? Or do I go a third route and use the surname of a famous person of that nationality I like. Like I've considered Patrick O'Connell for an Irish American protagonist given St. Pat's importance for the Irish and Daniel O'Connell's importnace for Irish nationalism.

It depends a lot. I like to balance an unusual first name with something fairly ordinary for the last name. Using family names from your own family is common with a lot of writers. You can have allusions. Basically, any of those works fine.

Some of them, yes. Then there are the high fantasy fiction writers like Tolkien who invent several languages for their imaginary world to speak. With grammar.
Ursula LeGuin says that in the period she was writing the Earthsea trilogy, she knew Hardic well enough to have simple conversations in it, and write poems, but she lost it, due to having no one to talk to.

My second wife, Kathy, would have been 54 years old today. She died on January 15, 1999 at the age of 41. She was a great teacher, musician and mother and I am fortunate to have known her at all, let alone to have been married to her for 18 years.
I met her because a friend of mine had convinced me to go to a symphony orchestra concert, then to a reception afterward. I saw her standing across the room in her black concert dress, a 5'11" vision with strawberry red hair. I thought, wow, this is the original long cool woman in a black dress. For a wonder, she seemed to return my glance. My heart felt like a cat had licked it. I thought, no, this woman couldn't be interested in me. This wasn't too long after my exceedingly messy divorce from my first wife, the notorious "Jezebel," and my confidence was none too high. To make a long story short, I was mistaken. She was indeed interested to some extent and we were married 4 months later.

I think Windy got it exactly right, really.
I mean, I don't like commies. I was raised by a man who doesn't like commies in a serious kind of way. But Dark doesn't like commies with a single-minded focus, and a willingness to put up with bad behavior from enemies of commies simply because they aren't commies that occasionally blows my mind.
There's no point arguing about it. No one is going to change their mind.

I'm not surprised. People often have trouble identifying satire if they already believe things so improbable that the disproportion of the satire doesn't occur to them. Poe's Law, reverse engineered.
I've had both lefties and righties send me that old Onion piece on the 'gay agenda' in a fury--the righties because they believed it, and the lefties because they thought it was a serious attack on gay people.
Of course, I do like to tell of the day I was walking with my mother, realized she was no longer by me, and found her staring in horror at a newspaper in a rack that read "Bush Complains: 'Vacation Ruined By Stupid Dead Soldier'". She was in shock. I had to point out that it was the Onion.

As I posted earlier: nuance, irony, satire and understatement are all dead or dying in America.
There is the famous story of king Canute who sat at the seaside, trying to command the tide to turn back. It is an image that is now associated with him: that of an arrogant king who cannot recognize that his powers are only human
The background is a lot more nuanced: Canute was a humble man, and tired of the constnat flood of sycophantic flattery he heard at court, being told that he was majestic and his powers divine.
The story is that he sat out on the seaside to demonstrate to the flattering courtiers that he was only human.

Heh...now this is how a successful prank in high school should be done...
Senior prank: Prom won't include cavity searches, principal assures
A senior prank had officials at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights fielding phone calls from parents concerned that their sons and daughters might receive body-cavity searches prior to prom.
Someone using St. Viator's 50th-anniversary stationery sent letters to the homes of all seniors, claiming they would be subject to cavity searches before the dance and the after-prom cruise because students in past years had smuggled in "illicit materials."
Though the school's switchboard lit up, St. Viator's president, the Rev. Mick Egan, said "the great majority of our parents knew immediately this was a prank."

Update on those 2 douchebag terrorists busted in NYC...
The attorneys for two New York men charged Thursday under a rarely used state law with plotting to bomb a synagogue and possibly the Empire State building say their clients are not guilty.
The case against 26-year-old Ahmed Ferhani, an Algerian, and 20-year-old Mohamed Mamdouh, a U.S. citizen of Moroccan descent, was orchestrated as part of a sting operation.
Ferhani's lawyer says his client has told him that "he hasn't committed any crime at all." Mamdouh's lawyer says his client is also proclaiming his innocence.
Ferhani's father told The New York Times that the accusations are unbelievable. He says his son is friends with a diverse group of people, and his girlfriend is Christian. The father told the Times, "All people are equal. We don't make a distinction."

The MSM is reporting on this crap coming out of Gaza...
Hamas sends signals of moderation to West
Hamas, the Islamic militant group known for suicide bombings, rocket attacks and hatred of Israel, is sending subtle signals of moderation as it prepares to join a Palestinian unity government.
Hamas officials speak of reconciliation with the West and a halt in armed hostilities with Israel, and even hint at some sort of political accommodation with the Jewish state. While Israel is not convinced, there are hopes in some Palestinian circles that the Iran-backed group could become a more accepted part of the Mideast diplomatic equation.
"The world should realize that we have made many changes," said Ghazi Hamad, the deputy foreign minister of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip. "The international community should not run away from these changes."
And while the sympathizers of terrorists continue to report on the possibility of rainbows & unicorns coming out of Gaza, Hamas is quickly building up their weapons collection.
Egypt turmoil helping arms smuggling to Gaza-Israel
Smugglers of arms into the Gaza Strip are operating almost freely after a change of leadership in Egypt, Israel's Shin Bet security agency said.
A report by the domestic spy agency said with Egypt's new leaders preoccupied with stabilizing their country, "governance in Sinai is not high and this allows smugglers to operate almost without hindrance.
"Today the Egyptian regime's attention is focused on stabilizing the new government and this eases the Sinai smugglers' task," the report said.
...It said hundreds of rockets with a range of 20-40 kilometers (12-25 miles), at least 1,000 mortar bombs, some anti-tank missiles and tones of high explosives and raw material to make high explosives had entered Gaza since the start of 2010.

You say yes, go do the interview, and treat it as a load of fun, because interviews for jobs you don't need are a rare opportunity in life to be really yourself.

Jordan has a peace treaty with Israel, but has no intention of ever allowing itself be part of a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict because millions of Palestinians living in refugee camps struggle to this day because the countries where those camps are located refuse to allow the Palestinians to become integrated into their countries as citizens. Moreover, the Jordanian regime has a long memory - Abdullah's dad had to crush a PLO rebellion that resulted in Black September when the PLO tried to overthrow the Jordanian king.
Palestinians have to acknowledge that they aren't going to get a right to return to Israel for all those who they claim should be allowed that right. The refugee numbers have been inflated over decades, and a refusal to allow resettlement within Arab countries makes the situation even worse.
It creates a permanent underclass and one that is discontent and one that fuels the likes of Hamas.

U.N. official: 850 likely killed in clashes in Syria
The two-month-long crackdown down by Syrian security forces on anti-government protesters may have left as many as 850 people dead, a U.N. official said on Friday.
The rising death toll was announced as Syrian security forces braced for nationwide protests after Friday prayers. Activists are referring to the turnout as "The Friday of Free Syrian Women," a commemoration of those females rallying for freedom and a remembrance of those who have been slain.
...The number killed in clashes with government forces has been put by various human rights groups at between 700 and 850 dead, according to Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Muslim Extremists Hold 'Funeral service' for Bin Laden
Hundreds of Muslim extremists gathered outside the US Embassy in London on Friday, May 6th, to stage a funeral service for Osama bin Laden. Members of the anti-Islamic group "English Defence League" (EDL) staged a counter demonstration. The two groups were kept apart by police.
The rally was organised by the group "Muslims Against Crusades" headed by controversial preacher Anjem Choudry who previously made headlines by burning poppies on Remembrance Sunday. Around 300 Muslims marched on the embassy to chants of "Allahu Akbar" and anti-American slogans before kneeling to pray for bin Laden. They demanded "the release of the body of Sheikh Usama to his family to be properly buried" and held banners stating that "Shariah will dominate the world".

There are very narrow grounds for appeal in Texas, mostly due to technical issues with the trial, like if jury instructions are improperly delivered, or if there's a procedural mistake.
The death penalty case with the sleeping lawyer is rarity, since that guy got an appeal. It got him off death row, but not out of prison, since he agreed to three life sentences instead of death. He's the exception, not the rule.

Thank you for your continued interest in employing me through the summer as an intern in your ______ program.I know there were difficulties in establishing an interview date for me. There was a period of time when I did not hear from you and assumed the position had been filled, and during that time, I accepted a position elsewhere.
Again, your continued interest in me is appreciated.

The nagging must be up to the level of biblical proportions...
Man Marries 107 Women, Fathers 185 Children
The phrase "I do" comes once -- maybe twice or thrice -- in most people's lives. For one man in Niger, it comes on a weekly basis.
Bello Maasaba, an Islamic faith healer, has married a grand total of 107 eager women.
In a country with a long tradition of polygamy, the number is still quite, quite high. The number of children fathered by the popular healer also reaches skyward: 185 in all.
But why?
"I get a revelation from God telling me any woman I'm going to marry. If it wasn't from God, I wouldn't have gone beyond two," he explained to Los Angeles Times writer Robyn Dixon.
Maasaba said that he was visited by the archangel Gabriel, who told him to pursue faith healing and marry many, many women.

I would, but walking into his office knowing I already have a job feels dishonest and like I'm wasting his time. That's not fair to him, or to me. I couldn't do that.
I just need to find a way to say that an offer came in while I was waiting to hear back, and I accepted it because it fit my personal and professional interests.

This is the modern world. How do you know for certain that new job will be there when you show up for your first day of work? Really. That sounds a bit jaded, but that is how things are.
My ex used to go off and interview regularly even when she was not looking for a new job just to stay in practice.

Well, that too. But you have to be pretty much stoned out of your gourd to think that the angel Gabriel told you to build a harem. And even as a believer in God, angels, and faith healing, if someone told me that the archangel appeared to them and told them to go forth and lay hands on the sick, I'd probably tell them to seek professional help.

That's not an awkward letter...trust me. Just say that you had another offer on the table, that it was a good offer, and that you didn't want to risk losing one job while waiting to see if there was another opportunity. Also add that, should you find yourself in the job market in the future, you would be happy to give the guy first shot at hiring you.
Employers hate, HATE losing out on hiring people. I have had a couple of really good candidates accept other jobs on the day before our interview and call me to tell me so. I keep their resumes on file in case they find themselves back on the market.

re: #402 Alouette
The PLO Charter still reflects similar sentiment. Consider Article 9:
Article 9: Armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine. Thus it is the overall strategy, not merely a tactical phase. The Palestinian Arab people assert their absolute determination and firm resolution to continue their armed struggle and to work for an armed popular revolution for the liberation of their country and their return to it. They also assert their right to normal life in Palestine and to exercise their right to self-determination and sovereignty over it.
The Charter defines Palestine as the entire territorial entity in existence at the time of the British mandate, meaning Israel ceases to exist, and so too does Jordan (all annexed and consolidated into Palestine).
That's the rationale behind the attempt to overthrow Jordan's government, because the PLO (which means Fatah) sees itself as the true rulers of the Mandate Palestine..
And for what it's worth - the PA/PLO were supposed to remove those kinds of statements/chapters from their charters under Oslo, but they're still there - and new versions refer back to the original Charter as effective. Fatah's still playing the long game, and using Hamas for its own tactical advantage. Fatah can claim that Hamas is more violent, so deal with them since they're moderate, but they are anything but in their ultimate goal.

It is unfortunate that either Hamas or Israel will have to cease to exist if there is to be peace...

re: #404 Alouette
That meme doesn't pass the smell test/laugh test/bs-o-meter. Hamas has not changed its goals, intentions, or policy towards Israel. They're just being a little sneakier about what they want to do.
And everyone buys into it because the kassams aren't flying into Israel for the moment. No kassams = chance for peace, but in reality the no kassams simply means that Hamas is biding its time for when they will fire them again en masse.

OK. This is what I ended up writing:
Dear xxx,
As much as I would love to come in and talk, an offer for a business development internship came in yesterday from ___________. It's a great opportunity that fits my professional interests and I've decided to accept it.
I would hate to come in and take an hour of your time when I've got a position lined up. I'm truly, deeply sorry if this causes any problems, and I really do appreciate the patience and interest you showed in me. I hope that we can keep lines of communication open, so that if I find myself in the market for a position down the line, we could talk again. I like __________ and I think you guys are a great company. Maybe we could work together someday. For now, I've already made a commitment to ______________, and I can't go back on my word.
Thanks again for everything, and I look forward to keeping in contact in the future.
xxxx
I hope that works. It might be a simple letter, but it took me ages even to write that much.
