re: #19 goddamnedfrank
It’ll take me some time to read through the case, but it seems that the Court found that the exigent circumstances rule applies when the police do not create the exigency by engaging or threatening to engage in conduct that violates the Fourth Amendment - particularly where the law enforcement believes that evidence may be destroyed.
The presumption that searches and seizures inside a home without a warrant are unreasonable can be overcome when “ ‘the exigencies of the situation’ make the needs of law enforcement so compelling that [a]warrantless search is objectively reasonable under the Fourth Amendment,” Mincey v. Arizona, 437 U. S. 385, 394. One such exigency is the need “to prevent the imminent destruction of evidence.”
This is the kind of situation where someone is heard flushing evidence down a toilet, but it could potentially be interpreted to apply to someone using computers to eliminate a paper trail of evidence (white collar crimes, child porn, money laundering, fraud, etc.). That gives quite a bit of leeway, and I’m not sure that the law enforcement can be trusted with that kind of power.

It’s not a bad decision, but it could use some refinement. Still, the idea that the cops don’t need to wait if they hear someone flushing drugs is a sound one.

Say you’re in the apartment next door minding your own business; the smell of pot is wafting through, and the cops are following the smell trail - they break into your apartment, not the guy next door.
I agree that police need to be able to deal with situations where the perp is trying to destroy evidence, but I don’t think this decision gives enough protection to the public to insure that they aren’t subject to unreasonable searches.

Great news for local LA hikers. Over 100 miles of hiking trails and picnic areas have finally reopened in Angeles National Forest. Areas in Big Tujunga are still closed to “facilitate natural recovery and safety” (insert skeptical snort here). I’m an advocate of the idea that the area would recover just fine despite hikers and picnics.

Typical statist BS. Do drugs make a distinct sound when flushed? The police made one assumption based on another assumption in a non-emergency situation, neither of which were recorded or presented forensically. Rights are worth more than this.

Good day for me today. Got a sale today that I’d been working on for almost 6 weeks. Good news on other pending deals means I’m looking at a very good sales week.
We also had funny moment at work today. A few days ago my boss had a short interview with a candidate who had come in a hour late. It was a short “just to be polite” interview, as the firm I work for doesn’t hire people who are in the habit of showing up very late without a good reason. But the goofball took offense and sent on of our HR guys an off-the-wall email. It was full of spelling errors and little punctuation, and opened with a “don’t contact me again or I’ll report you to the Better Business Bureau”. But they the guy went on to demand my boss be fired and said he should be email after that was done. He then ranted for several lines before ending with “Put that in yur pipe and smoke it!!” It was so silly and nonsensical that I can’t help wondering: Which Stalker was it? Because normally you have to go the Stalker Blog to find that sort of insanity and Butthurt.

The robotic voice told me that my J P Morgan debit card is not valid and that I should press “1” to reactivate my debit card. I do not have this debit card. I’m juuuuuuuust starting to reach that age, I think. Like, I’m just barely old enough to have been somewhat aware that the Soviet Union was falling apart and what that meant, but that’s still more than a lot of people. And I remember payphones. And before most people had heard of the Internet and before the World Wide Web even existed.
Clearly, I’m still young and with limited exposure to the world, but I’m still becoming aware that there are, in fact, people that are young enough to take for granted some things even I didn’t have as a kid. I can’t even begin to fathom what it must be like for people 10 or 20 or 30 or more years older.

I was hauled off to jail, dragged into court and suffered financially because of her…I beat her ass, and her hotshit $2400 greasy lawyer in court on my own, representing myself over another domestic violence charge…my girl was 12 then and before I went in to court she gave me a teeshirt that said Worlds Greatest Dad on the front…and along the way I took down the township cops that busted me…it was all trumped up and I went for a bench trial and kicked their asses….probably my greatest personal triumph…no fear

Those are often the right thing for someone who might not be seen as ‘sympathetic’. In such cases, it can be better to hope (as is normally the case) that the judgement will care less about sympathy and more about what the law says.

Ah ha. Yes, I can see how a bench trial would be your choice in such a situation, then. If you had a ton of strong evidence against her word, simply presenting it to the bench would have probably been safer and faster than facing a jury.

When you’re in shit as deep as Steve was in, any move you make to get away clean is risky. That’s why so many people accused plead guilty, because the penalties are a good bit worse if you fight it out and lose. But Steve took a calculated risk, knowing how strong his case was, and won. Yep. And that’s how the courts and prosecutors like it. Saves them time and energy. And you can’t lose a case if you never let it go to trial (OK, that’s not always true, but you know what I mean).

A mission of hope in an urban garden
“We eat what we get. It’s not like I can say ‘I’m going to eat something healthy,’” says Joel, a resident of a downtown Atlanta shelter.
For Joel, and other homeless people like him, having a meal does not mean choosing between an organic pear and gorgonzola salad or locally-grown arugula with artisanal cheese. Instead, food options boil down to one thing: sustenance. The food is received mostly by donation, which means it’s often cheap, non-perishable, and generally less than healthy.
However, one Atlanta nonprofit, the Atlanta Mission, has recently taken the term “community garden” to a new level by adapting a vacant lot in the downtown area and transforming it into a garden filled with raised vegetable beds. It’s tended daily by the very men who inhabit the shelter and whose bounty will benefit the shelter’s kitchen.
This plot is manned by the most unassuming and unlikely gardeners. Ty, a former gang member with tattoos on his face, and Joel, a recovering addict, spend half their day pulling weeds, watering and pruning the multiple-bed garden in hopes that they’ll be able to harvest a successful bounty of fresh produce by the end of the season.

You must have scared or startled the hell out of him, I’ll give you that. Most judges I’ve seen or heard of would have taken none too kindly to that sort of thing and it probably would have ended badly for you. Granted, if you were in the right he would have probably been limited in what he could do, since a lot of the tactics a judge can pull in that situation depend on the target not been all that determined or, you know, belonging to a bar that they needed to worry about standing in.

There are sucesses, but the failures seem due to organizational flaws more than lack of horticulture expertise. (My non-community garden is producing enough to set me to ‘foisting’ squash and cucumbers up and down the street. One was 32.2 oz.)

That’s a neat story.
I’ve wondered if our society isn’t really needing a revival of, for lack of better terms, monasteries. With so many homeless men - young, middle age, and especially older - something needs to be done. I fear we’ll see more and more of these types as American wealth slowly gets frittered away (either through continued huge trade imbalances, super-expensive wars, etc.) and our “growth engine” stalls.
There’s a lot to be said for a local group that puts idle mens’ hands to work to feed themselves. Here in San Diego we do have lots of homeless as it rarely freezes and rain is uncommon. There is a huge Catholic organization that runs shelters, and some smaller organizations, but still it seems like something more productive and meaningful could be done with these guys than just have them hang around a building for a few hours waiting for a free meal.
What’s double sad is that San Diego is one of the few areas where one can garden year round and get food 12 months of the year, but so many of the younger people are uninterested in growing food. In the old days when people bought houses here they’d plant at least one lemon, orange, or avocado tree. But when I look at the urban and suburban development here the last 2 or 3 decades it seems like plots now only have carefree ornamentals, as if people just don’t have time garden. Yes, there are the obvious exceptions - there’s local clubs/groups that specialize in bananas and figs and so on - there are always (fortunately) the die hard gardeners.
Anyway, long rant, but I really do believe that a return to the land so to speak would help address several ills our society is manifesting.

I had a young friend who got caught up with some bad friends and was looking at a long vacation in an unpleasant place. I popped for a real lawyer for her and she ended up with a bit of probation (with record wiping if she stayed good) instead. Today she makes a decent living and is a good mother to her son. Iowa’s governor is fearing his state isn’t cashing in on it’s “first in nation” status, in part, due to the fact that the Republicans have no serious candidates and the Democrats won’t even have a primary race…so their only real attraction is their whopping seven electoral votes for the general…
Several 2012 campaigns have shied away from Iowa so far, worrying that only a Mike Huckabee-like candidate who caters to hardcore social conservative activists can win.
But Branstad challenged White House hopefuls to “come here” and campaign, declaring that Iowa Republicans want a nominee who “focuses on cleaning up the financial mess that we have in Washington” and “somebody that focuses on jobs and revitalizing the private sector.”
…snip…
“Iowa Republicans didn’t set out to marginalize themselves, but it’s happened — to New Hampshire’s benefit,” Cullen crowed. “With several major candidates likely to bypass Iowa, and the odds rising that Iowa’s skewed caucus electorate could support candidates with limited general election appeal, the likelihood of New Hampshire being called upon to make a correction grow.”

Iowa’s governor is fearing his state isn’t cashing in on it’s “first in nation” status, in part, due to the fact that the Republicans have no serious candidates and the Democrats won’t even have a primary race…so their only real attraction is their whopping seven electoral votes for the general…
Please, come…bring your entourage, and the media…we need the revenue.
Actually, avoiding Iowa makes sense. New Hampshire is a state where the gOP isn’t run by wingnuts, so showcasing yourself there is better for a candidate’s general election appeal.

… here in America the average home owner has a huge yard filled with useless grass in some bizarre and lame imitation of English estates. It’s well past time to put that tradition to rest.
I never planted any yard here in San Diego and my old front yard was totally planted in flowering ornamentals or fruit. The back was mostly hillside and I let it go with the original natural planting (no watering, all drought resistant), which included wild rye grass which I chopped downed once a year at the end of summer to keep it from being a fire hazard.
It really ought to be discouraged to have a lawn here in San Diego. It’s such a waste of water which is and will be increasingly fought over in years to come. When the day comes (and it will) when Lake Mead falls below the level where water can be drawn (which might happen by the end of this year) for LV, or when the water gets even lower and the turbines stop in the dam - on that day people here in the SW will learn how valuable water really is.

We get less than 10% of our water here from the Colorado river. However, the agriculture in Imperial county is totally dependent upon it, as well as the Mexican farmers right across the border.
The big drain on the Colorado is Las Vegas and surrounding areas. When the water allocation of the Colorado R. was made among the states the basis used for run-off used abnormally wet years (which we now know in hindsight), so the allocation even before the boom in LV was going to be hard to meet. Then, add a million people in the middle of nowhere (LV) with no other source of water (the local springs are too small to support very many people) and we get the problem we have today.

sadly, for the same reasons we don’t have a good electric car still. Its cheaper to just ship it in than to develop a sustainable resource.

Southern California Considers Financing Mexico Desalinization Plant
California, Arizona, and Nevada have been speaking with Mexican government officials about sharing a desalinization plant in the neighboring country, but it is the San Diego County Water Authority and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California that have pursued the possibility.
The desalinization plant would be located just south of San Diego in Mexico’s Rosarito Beach, and construction could begin in just two years. The plant would produce up to 75 million gallons of fresh water a day, which is 50 percent more than the biggest facility planned for California. The plant planned for California has been delayed due to lawsuits and permitting for well over a decade. It is intended for Carlsbad in San Diego County.

In my neck of CA, water is always an issue, especially for farming. The county has even been installing water meters in certain neighborhoods. Right now they just serve as monitors to collect data on usage, but there is little doubt that in the future they will be employed to institute rationing and charge usage fees.
Nearly half the year here, the temps are such that it would be far more practical to use cacti and the like for personal gardens. But folk do so love their flowers and lawns.

Back when Katrina struck and all shit went to hell in NOLA, a relative of mine was ticked that people would even consider rebuilding that place. A waste of tax dollars and what not. It was originally under the sea level, why not just leave it there?
I asked what we would do with all the people that once lived there, where would they go?
Why, Nevada of course. There’s all kinds of miles of unused, undeveloped, uninhabited land there. I patiently assured that relative of mine there was a reason for that.

There are three memorials to fallen U.S. chaplains in Arlington. One from 1926, and two done in the 80s, one Protestant and one Catholic. There’s a move on now to get one put up for the Jewish chaplains. Apparently Congress is not moving their ass sufficiently fast on this—people hoped to get ‘er approved by Memorial Day.
I am now dealing with a guy online who appears to believe that the government pays for these things, as well as approving them for installation in Arlington. He also wants to know who was ‘the political party in control when the other chaplains got a monument’.
That would be Coolidge, Reagan and GHW Bush’s terms, but damned if I can figure out what his angle is here.

There are three memorials to fallen U.S. chaplains in Arlington. One from 1926, and two done in the 80s, one Protestant and one Catholic. I have not been following the whole thing, but suspect that part of what may be slowing things down is that the whole Arlington scandale may be making Congress wary of approving anything right now.
Or, they may just be dragging their little feet.

That is fairly awful, isn’t it? But I don’t think there’s a Bureau of Fairness for these things. If you want something put up for your group, you go to Congress and ask for permission, and you fundraise.
I’m just irritated because I think (maybe unfairly) that this guy is angling for it to be the Democrats’ fault.

Good evening all. First off - isn’t life peculiar?
About 9 months ago, an old love (my first love) found me through a business network and sent a few friendly emails. Nice enough, though I managed to conceal the fact that I still loved her after all those years.
Then she sent me one of those “one friend to another, tell me” emails, and I answered vaguely, equivocally. (She saw through that, of course, as we’d corresponded for many, many years.)
Silence for half a year.
And then, about a month ago, it all came spilling out. All the old emotions, dissatisfaction with an unhappy marriage, and a sense of loss and frustration at having missed out on the one true love that would complete an otherwise wasted life. Pledges of deathless love and all the rest of it.
yeah, I’m talking about me.

A more extensive answer would be that I’m freaking terrified. I mean, what if the wife should find out (she found, a decade or more ago, the correspondence between us, found the lady’s photo in there, and went insane) that she and I have been writing, to say nothing of whay we’ve been writing?
Assuming she didn’t kill me outright, it’d be bound to show up in the papers, even under the best of circumstances.
Worse yet, the children.
So, no, I’m not sure happy is the right word, not the right word at all.

It always amazes me when people think sticking with a unhappy marriage (your term) is better for the kids than a responsibly handled divorce. I mean, it’s none of my business except that you’re airing it all out here and my nic is goddamnedfrank so that’s the kind of feedback I give.
However, my general rule is that a person should be in one relationship at a time. If it’s not working out and the other woman is simply helping you reach that realization, fine, as long as you’re ready, okay and plan on being alone for awhile. However if a person is not ready to be alone then I think they’re setting themselves up for a fall. This happened to my ex-wife, two weeks after she left the guy she left me for dumped her for being too clingy. Sucked for her because she really wasn’t ready to be alone but I’d already come to the realization that I couldn’t possibly ever trust her again.

Nothing is the matter with you. Romantic love ( and monogamy in particular ) are just not realistic, but they are what the women we love have been brought up to expect from us. So, unless your current wife is going to let you join a cult like the Yearning For Zion folks, you have to make a choice: are you going to betray this woman just to gratify your ego or lust ? Or are you a manly man whose word is unimpeachable?

Drug and alcohol tests had ‘error after error’
Emails reveal 7 years of mistakes at state’s toxicology lab and show IU was slow to act
[Link: www.indystar.com…]
Testing errors at the state’s toxicology lab go back at least seven years — much further than previously reported — according to internal emails obtained by The Indianapolis Star.
…..
Among the more important revelations from the correspondence:» There was a pattern of incorrect test results — including the kind that could lead to people being denied or escaping justice — from 2004 to 2006. That’s significant because the test results being reviewed in the current audit are from 2007 to 2009. The current audit already has found the lab sent out, on average, a flawed marijuana result every 3.28 days and a false positive marijuana result once every 18 days.
» From 2003 to 2008, IU allowed the lab to languish under an acting director, Method, who acknowledged he was underqualified for the job.
» Method reported to Vasko, but IU says Vasko’s job was merely broad “administrative oversight” — leaving the lab to its acting director as problems mounted.

This. Life is too short to stick around in a bad relationship. Why would you want to wake up 10 years from now knowing you wasted the last decade of your life when you knew it wasn’t going to last? OTOH, people are always making the mistake of falling for romanticized memories of long-lost loves and “the grass is always greener” syndrome. (it’s a syndrome, look it up//).
Guanxi, If it’s over, it’s over regardless of the other woman. Do the right thing for yourself and your kids and then worry about another relationship.

I do not know—but, on the other hand, it would be nice to know, and without delay—how a chambermaid could have walked in alone, contrary to the habitual practice of most of New York’s grand hotels of sending a “cleaning brigade” of two people, into the room of one of the most closely watched figures on the planet. And I do not want to enter into considerations of dime-store psychology that claims to penetrate the mind of the subject, observing, for example, that the number of the room (2806) corresponds to the date of the opening of the Socialist Party primaries in France (06.28), in which he is the uncontested favorite, thereby concluding that this is all a Freudian slip, a subconsciously deliberate mistake, and blah blah blah.

Further complicating the arrest was the fact that Dixon is black - but witnesses told police a white man broke into the store. To many Americans, the handling of Strauss-Kahn reflected an egalitarian tradition that all crime suspects get the same treatment, regardless of their wealth or power.

Old Photographers joke.
I’ve seen the joke in action. Worked as a kid in a ‘catalog house’ shooting the photos for major mail-order houses on a tight schedule. Precision was critical, and we shot 4x5 or 8x10’s with the art director’s guide taped inverted to the round glass. Our kiddie specialist once had to shoot SEVEN uncooperative($$$) kids in a complex scene. After an hour or two of their BS he had the studio carpenter come up, ordered the kids out of their shoes, nailed them to the set and laced them back in.

“Former Culture Minister Jack Lang described the treatment of the Socialist presidential frontrunner — whose political career is now in tatters — as a “lynching” that had “provoked horror and aroused disgust.”
The U.S. justice system, he said, was “politicized” and the judge appeared to have been determined to “make a Frenchman pay” by denying the head of the International Monetary Fund bail even though his lawyer had offered to post a $1 million bond.
To many Americans, the handling of Strauss-Kahn reflected an egalitarian tradition that all crime suspects get the same treatment, regardless of their wealth or power.
Socialist Party leader Martine Aubry denounced “degrading images” and said France was lucky to have a law on the presumption of innocence that bars media from showing defendants in handcuffs before they are convicted.”
[Link: ca.news.yahoo.com…]I love the Irony in the fact it’s a Socialist party Leader being lead around by the nose, like a commoner… minion… like us regular folks that are accused of the violent crimes against a women that Domi is facing.
Oh, the gall of the American justice system…

The scene in the movie “The girl with the dragoon tattoo” where her rapist probation officer gets his just reward by her hand - that works for me.

A creative solution. Kid’s are such jitterbugs.

Oglesby was placed on paid administrative leave following the Dec. 21 incident at the school. According to police reports, Oglesby was at the school for another incident and went into a room where the special-needs child was suffering a seizure, which his parents say causes him to scream and throw a tantrum.Oglesby told the young boy he was giving him a headache and then lifted the 65-pound boy by the throat. He “was lifted off the floor so his feet were dangling … his head was close to the ceiling … his face was turning quite red,” according to the school psychologist’s statement to police.

When in China, beware of exploding watermelons!
Fields of watermelon burst in China farm fiasco
Watermelons have been bursting by the score in eastern China after farmers gave them overdoses of growth chemicals during wet weather, creating what state media called fields of “land mines.”
About 20 farmers around Danyang city in Jiangsu province were affected, losing up to 115 acres (45 hectares) of melon, China Central Television said in an investigative report.
Prices over the past year prompted many farmers to jump into the watermelon market. All of those with exploding melons apparently were first-time users of the growth accelerator forchlorfenuron, though it has been widely available for some time, CCTV said.

Of the 204 new Obamacare waivers President Barack Obama’s administration approved in April, 38 are for fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Northern California district. That’s in addition to the 27 new waivers for health care or drug companies and the 31 new union waivers Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services approved.
Pelosi’s district secured almost 20 percent of the latest issuance of waivers nationwide, and the companies that won them didn’t have much in common with companies throughout the rest of the country that have received Obamacare waivers.
Other common waiver recipients were labor union chapters, large corporations, financial firms and local governments. But Pelosi’s district’s waivers are the first major examples of luxurious, gourmet restaurants and hotels getting a year-long pass from Obamacare.
Nancy Pelosi must have finally read it since it was passed.

Nancy Pelosi must have finally read it since it was passed.
San Francisco businesses must provide health insurance for their employees per a city measure that voters approved and have since 2001.
Effective July 1, 2001, the Health Care Accountability Ordinance (HCAO) generally requires City contractors and certain tenants to offer health plan benefits to their covered employees, to make payments to the City for use by the Department of Public Health, or, under limited circumstances, to make payments directly to their covered employees.
Effective July 1, 2009, the fee option for contractors/tenants is $3.00 per hour, capped at $120.00 per work week. Note: Each July 1 the fee option will be adjusted for inflation.
Update (7/1/10): the fee options remains $3.00 per hour, capped at $120.00 per work week, through June 30, 2011.
So mandated employer coverage already exists, which is why they’re able to get exempted from the new national healthcare act for the time being.

The situation with Pakistan has just gone from bad to worse. While Sen. John Kerry appears to have successfully convinced the Pakistanis to return parts from the downed chopper used in the raid to get OBL, Pakistani and NATO forces exchanged fire near the Afghan/Pakistani border.
The clash took place at Admi Kot Post in the North Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan, an area that American officials have long regarded as a haven used by militants to attack coalition forces inside Afghanistan. NATO officials said they were looking into the incident, and could not immediately confirm whether the helicopters had indeed entered Pakistan’s airspace. The exchange of fire between NATO and Pakistani forces appeared likely to worsen frictions between Pakistan and the United States. The Pakistani Army “lodged a strong protest and demanded a flag meeting,” the statement said, referring to a meeting between officials from Pakistan and NATO.
Last September, Pakistan shut down for more than a week the land route through Pakistan that NATO uses to supply its forces in Afghanistan, after two Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed in a similar border clash.
Tuesday’s clash came as Pakistan’s prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, traveled to Beijing. Analysts said that visit was meant to signal to the United States that Pakistan saw China as an alternative source of security and economic aid.
On Monday, Senator John Kerry met with top civil and military leaders in Pakistan in an effort to smooth the fraying relations between the two countries in the wake of the American raid by forces that killed Osama bin Laden. The Pakistani Parliament in a closed-door session last week urged the government to renew and revisit its terms of engagement with the United States. It also warned that it might sever supply lines to coalition forces in Afghanistan if there were further unilateral incursions.

China has regional security issues to worry about, to say nothing about its own need for natural resources and energy. Pakistan is looking to China for the same and potentially military aid in the long term as the US shifts towards India (which is something we should have been doing years ago as US interests are really more in line with India than with Pakistan but the Cold War shaped that trilateral relationship.

The suspect was arrested after police found a stew made from a human liver in a fridge at his Moscow apartment, the official Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported. The Agence France Presse identified him as Nikolai Shadrin, citing an Investigative Committee statement.
“During a search of the apartment, tools used to dismember the victim and a human liver were found,” the statement reportedly said.

Irish police detonate bomb before Queen’s arrival
The Queen has arrived in Ireland on the first state visit by a ruling British monarch since Ireland became a republic in 1922.Relations between Ireland and Britain remain strained, and even before the Queen landed in Dublin, police were called to detonate a bomb planted on a bus outside the city.
The incident followed terror threats in London in the lead up to this historic trip.

Pakistan cements China ties amid tension with U.S.
What are the chances China got some great pictures & measurements of our stealth helicopter tail?
“Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao last year called Sino-Pakistani ties “firm as a rock,” and his Pakistani counterpart echoed the sentiment Monday.
“To test a friend whether true or not, it needs time and means under crisis,” Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told China’s state-run media before leaving for a four-day official visit to China, during which he is scheduled to meet Wen and Chinese President Hu Jintao.
“We appreciate that in all difficult circumstances China stood with Pakistan — therefore we call China a true friend and a time-tested and all-weather friend.”
Although Gilani’s trip was planned long before bin Laden’s death, some observers see his comments as a jab to the United States and expect him to further strengthen ties with China to counter mounting U.S. criticisms. While many Americans suspect Pakistan of covertly harboring bin Laden, China has been quick to defend its ally.”

GOP Field Looking More Mainstream
I love this paragraph:
“Of the remaining major candidates, only one – Pawlenty – is positioning himself as a Tea Party style Republican. Romney, Huntsman, and Daniels (if the latter two do decide to run) are positioned as “mainstream Republicans” in the Pew taxonomy: conservative yes, but governance minded rather than protest minded.”
Isn’t Frum basically admitting here that at the moment there is exactly one mainstream Republican candidate?
“We’ve got THREE sane candidates! And hopefully two of them will run!”
Frum’s not really bolstering his own argument there.

Wind farm working a little too well….
Wind Farms In Pacific Northwest May Shut Down Due To Power Surplus
The manager of most of the electricity in the Pacific Northwest is running such a surplus of power from hydroelectric dams that it put wind farms on notice Friday that they may be shut down as early as this weekend.
The Bonneville Power Administration has more than enough electricity during a cold, wet spring that has created a big surge in river flows where hydroelectric dams are located. The agency responded by announcing its intentions to curtail wind power until the grid has more capacity, in a move likely to cost the industry millions of dollars.
The decision reflects an overlooked issue amid the push to add wind farms around the country: The capacity of power grids has not kept pace.

Letter: What is Carter thinking?
Former President Jimmy Carter has caused quite a stir in Seoul with his recent trip to North Korea. He is known pejoratively as “Pyongyang’s mouthpiece.”
True enough, he issued an incredibly off-the-wall and over-the-top statement that “both South Korea and the U.S. should be held responsible for worsening starvation in the North, for they deliberately withhold food aid to the North Koreans purely for political and military reasons.”
For crying out loud, where’s Carter’s outrage when the North viciously attacked South Korea, though unprovoked, twice last year, first blowing up a South Korean warship by a torpedo and then later firing upon the Yeonpyung Island to kill innocent people.
The Obama administration also refuses to consider giving any food assistance under the circumstances, unless they refrain from their hostile acts. According to one of the leading newspapers in Seoul, Kim Jong Il had a French veterinarian flown in just to take care of his own pets (dogs and horses) and his heir apparent is building a huge mansion in their capital, once again flaunting to the world their absolute, corrupt power and ill-gotten wealth all the while their poor people are starving to death.
Some politicians and pundits claim that Carter has been the worst president in U.S. history, but we have to leave that matter up to the historians. Yet, Carter often gets to be so officious in our foreign affairs that even his stature as ex-president might be adversely affected.
Did Carter really say that?

re: #503 Killgore Trout
It isn’t the wind farms that are working too well - it’s the hydro power that is running the surplus so the wind power isn’t needed.
It’s due to the higher than normal rainfall and snowmelt. Since it’s cheaper for the hydropower than wind power for generation purposes, the wind power is being asked to take a break until conditions improve.
Throw in the fact that the distribution system isn’t able to keep pace with power demands, and a regional surplus can’t be transferred to areas where the power is needed in an efficient manner.

It’s that time of year again…
Here we go again—UC Irvine’s annual propoganda parade
Here we go again. It’s spring, and for the Muslim Student Union (MSU) at UC Irvine (UCI), spring means it’s time for the MSU’s annual weeklong propaganda parade of hate programs against Israel and calls for punishing it with boycotts and divestment. Forget the real Arab spring, during which masses of people have been risking their lives to demonstrate against dictatorial rule. The MSU is obsessed with only one issue: convincing students that the democratic state of Israel is evil, has no right to exist, and should be punished and dismantled.
Over the past ten years, UCI’s MSU propaganda carnival has featured repeat guests and occasionally new ones. But the speakers are interchangeable. Their messages are always the same. They ignore the dictatorial Middle Eastern governments that oppress their own citizens. Instead, they are cheerleaders for Israel’s destruction. On campus, students informally refer to the MSU annual event as “hate week.”
This year is no different. UCI’s MSU has not been affected by faculty, community, and student protests about the factual distortions, extremism, and anti-Semitism of its past events. Nor has the MSU moderated despite its temporary suspension last fall. (The UCI administration disciplined the group for conspiring to prevent Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren from speaking on campus in February 2010 and then lying about the premeditated action, which it tried to pass off as “spontaneous” responses during the ambassador’s speech.)
True, the blatantly anti-Semitic, demagogic Abdel Malik Ali wasn’t invited, though he has been a regular in the past. (Last year, StandWithUs CEO Roz Rothstein taped him calling for an Intifada on campus, warning students not to socialize with Jewish students, and avowing his support for Hezbollah and Hamas. This was too much even for UCI’s liberal administration.) True, there aren’t bloody israeli flags or placards equating Israel with Nazis. True, the title of this year’s events is less inflammatory. Instead of a title that accuses Israel of “genocide” or a “holocaust,” like titles used in past years, the title, “Palestine: An Invisible Nation,” seems to shift the spotlight to the Palestinians. But this apparent moderation is a deception.
The changes are superficial. Despite the seemingly more moderate title, the focus will not be on Palestinians or what they must do to build a viable state and coexist peacefully alongside Israel. Consider the preposterousness of the title. There is nothing “invisible” about the Palestinians or the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. They have held center stage in the world for decades. Instead, as always, the MSU speakers will use the Palestinians as a rhetorical device to launch another all-out assault on Israel and Israel’s supporters.
Vicious hate continues out of UC Irvine. Shocka!

This is an issue that ought to be answered by the scientific community; I’m not a meteorologist. All I know is 90 percent of the scientists say climate change is occurring. If 90 percent of the oncological community said something was causing cancer we’d listen to them. I respect science and the professionals behind the science so I tend to think it’s better left to the science community – though we can debate what that means for the energy and transportation sectors.

Mass Graves Found in Syria, Residents Say
Residents near Syria’s southern city of Daraa claim they have found two separate mass graves containing up to 30 bodies as the Syrian government denies it, according to Reuters.
A Syrian Interior Ministry official dismissed reports about a mass grave in Daraa as “completely baseless.” The unnamed official, quoted by state-run news agency SANA, said Tuesday that the “allegations came in the context of the campaign of provocation, slander and fabrication” against Syria.
This comes as Syrian government agents chased students who were protesting against President Bashar Assad’s regime at a northern campus Tuesday, beating them with batons and injuring dozens, a human rights activist said.
Mustafa Osso said the agents tried to break up a protest of about 2,000 students at the campus in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city. He said many of the students were chased into their dormitories and badly beaten.

Ex-IAEA official adds weight to Syria atom suspicion
Satellite images and other information indicate Syria was building a covert atomic reactor when Israel bombed the site in 2007, a former senior U.N. nuclear inspector said on Tuesday.
Olli Heinonen, who stepped down as deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2010, made his remarks at a time when some argue that Damascus may soon be referred to the U.N. Security Council over the issue.
Now a senior fellow at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, he said “satellite imagery, procurement, and infrastructure information tend to point (in the) direction that the destroyed building at Dair Alzour was, indeed, a nuclear reactor at an advanced state of construction.”

U.S. speeds up direct talks with Taliban
The administration has accelerated direct talks with the Taliban, initiated several months ago, that U.S. officials say they hope will enable President Obama to report progress toward a settlement of the Afghanistan war when he announces troop withdrawals in July.
A senior Afghan official said a U.S. representative attended at least three meetings in Qatar and Germany, one as recently as “eight or nine days ago,” with a Taliban official considered close to Mohammad Omar, the group’s leader.
State Department spokesman Michael A. Hammer on Monday declined to comment on the Afghan official’s assertion, saying the United States had a “broad range of contacts across Afghanistan and the region, at many levels. . . . We’re not going to get into the details of those contacts.”

Like it or not yes, but it’s limited trust based on a mutual goal, end the war. Past that who knows. Obviously we could re visit the place with any level of destruction should a serious violation of that trust occur.

Are we really withholding food assistance from North Korea?
According to the WaPo, we suspended it two years ago, citing concerns about ‘transparency’. I suspect ‘transparency’ means a worry about whether our wheat ever gets to starving Koreans, or whether it just gets sold on the sly to pay for more platform designer shoes for Lil’ Kim.

4 U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan
The attack in southern Afghanistan caused an unusually high number of casualties for a single explosion, possibly reflecting the Taliban’s increasing use of more sophisticated homemade bombs.
They killed 4 of our finest. Yeah, we can trust them.

re: #573 NJDhockeyfan
Some Taliban groups are in cahoots with al Qaeda and Islamists, while others aren’t. They’re primarily tribal in organization/nature.
Divide and conquering them, by all available means - whether it’s militarily pounding them, buying them off, may be enough to enable the Afghan government to better control its side of the border. The problem stems from the Taliban on the Pakistani side, where they get to regroup and rearm against the Afghan forces and the ISAF/NATO/US forces. It’s the frontier provinces that have to be dealt with - and there’s no easy solution there - not with the Pakistanis barely able to control it if they even wanted to do so.

Residents say bodies lie in streets of Syrian border town
Bodies lie in the streets of the Syrian town of Tel Kelakh after black-clad gunmen loyal to President Bashar al-Assad moved in to crush unrest, refugees who fled into Lebanon say.
Speaking to Reuters after escaping their town, they said the assault began after residents of Tel Kelakh held protests on Friday calling for Assad’s overthrow.
Saturday, at least 10 buses arrived carrying security troops including Assad’s irregulars, known as “shabbiha,” wearing black clothes with red armbands. By Sunday, tanks surrounded the town and shelling started, residents said.
“Tanks and snipers fired haphazardly. They destroyed my house. They destroyed the water tank. The streets are flooded with water and dead bodies,” said Omar, a carpenter who walked for 3-1/2 hours with his wife and one-year-old twins to the Lebanese border town of Boqaya Sunday.
“I wouldn’t dare go back. Everyone who manages to escape thanks God a hundred times,” said Omar, who was staying at a home with dozens of other refugees from Tel Kelakh, some of whom said they were shot at as they crossed the border.
Residents of the town said they could not count the corpses in the streets because when they left their homes they were fired on.

The Pakistani army has more than enough manpower to control the frontier provinces. It’s just all deployed on the border with India.

re: #580 BishopX
The Pakistani military hasn’t exactly distinguished itself when it’s attempted to pacify the frontier provinces, and their semi-autonomous nature actually enhances the role of the Taliban over those of the military that can occasionally sweep through.
The Pakistani government also plays the game where it uses the frontier provinces as a relief valve for the Islamists - better that they attack towards Afghanistan than to go after India, which has a comparable and capable military that can and would strike back hard against Pakistan proper (and with which the Pakistanis have fought several full fledged wars across the Line of Control).

There’s a serious point here. Sadly, all this military spending has probably been a more efficient stimulus package than any contrived cash-for-clunkers or first-time-homebuyers-tax-credit gimmick that Congress can think up. These are salaries and training for many men and women, and contracts for American companies to make things.

It’s unclear to me whether or not the northwest provinces have been a safety valve for islamists or a training ground for ISI funded proxies…
When you’re long term strategy is to use the instability caused by terrorist groups as a means of preventing encirclement it’s hard to tell what’s a safety valve and what’s the ISI backing people.

U.S. intel: Evidence at bin Laden compound points to contacts by ISI
The government of Pakistan, especially its military and intelligence service, are coming under intense criticism for the role or ignorance of the five-year residence of Osama bin Laden who lived near a military base 35 miles from Pakistan’s capital.
U.S. intelligence agencies have uncovered evidence that Pakistani intelligence and military officers appear to have been in contact with bin Laden at his hideout.
The information was gleaned from captured computers and flash drives as well as documents obtained during the raid.U.S. intelligence officials believe the Pakistani military intelligence service ISI, and in particular its Directorate S, is the key source of support for Al Qaida and Taliban terrorists.
The unit is believed to be staffed by Pakistani military intelligence officers who share the Islamist extremist world view of Al Qaida, a view cultivated during the 1980s under Pakistani Prime Minister Zia ul-Haq.

US Debt Holders Willing to Miss Payments: Rep. Ryan
[Link: www.cnbc.com…]
Holders of US government debt would be willing to miss payments “for a day or two or three or four” if it put the US in a stronger position to pay them later on, Rep. Paul Ryan told CNBC Tuesday.“That’s what I’m hearing from most people,” said the Wisconsin Republican, chairman of the House Budget Committee. “What is more important is that you’re putting the government in a materially better position to be able to pay their bonds later on.”

China blocks release of report by UN experts on NKorea sanctions violations
China is blocking the release of a report by United Nations experts that accuses North Korea of violating U.N. sanctions.
The report says North Korea has violated a ban on the export and import of ballistic missile and nuclear-related items as well as conventional arms and luxury goods.
China’s U.N. Ambassador Li Baodong said Tuesday that Beijing needs more time to study the 81-page report.
Li spoke to reporters after a closed-door meeting of the Security Council. The meeting was to discuss the implementation of two rounds of sanctions against the North and the experts’ findings.
The report was obtained Monday by The Associated Press. It claims North Korea remains “actively engaged” in exporting ballistic missiles, components and technology to numerous customers in the Middle East and South Asia.

“Pro-White” Radio Host Claims He Helped Jerome Corsi With Birther Story
James Edwards writes today that Corsi “personally e-mailed me a few months ago for some assistance on a story closely related to the contents of this book. I was happy to oblige and work behind-the-scenes with both Dr. Corsi and World Net Daily on this matter.”
Edwards is the host of the “pro-white” radio program The Political Cesspool. The show’s website states: “We represent a philosophy that is pro-White … We wish to revive the White birthrate above replacement level fertility and beyond to grow the percentage of Whites in the world relative to other races.” The show regularly features a guest roster of “pro-white” figures like David Duke and “neo-Nazi activist April Gaede.”

Netanyahu: Abbas distorting history
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of “distorting known and well-documented historical facts” following the latter’s op-ed in the New York Times.
…In his article, Abbas addressed the Palestinians’ UN bid for statehood and noted that the last time the Palestinian issue took center stage at the General Assembly was in 1947, with the decision to divide Palestine.
“Shortly thereafter, Zionist forces expelled Palestinian Arabs to ensure a decisive Jewish majority in the future state of Israel,” Abbas said.Netanyahu said in response that the Palestinians were the ones to reject the Partition Plan, while the Jews agreed to it.
“Arab armies assisted by Palestinian forces were those who attacked the Jewish state with the aim of destroying it. There is no mention of this in the article.”
The prime minister further added, “One can deduce that the Palestinian leadership views the establishment of the Palestinian state as a means to continue the conflict rather than end it.”
