well…
Steward still wants a ban on ‘assault weapons’, raising the same old definition crap that’s hovered over gun owners and gun haters alike…what the hell is an assault weapon anyway?….otherwise it’s a reasonable debate, but one where the WH should prevail

I don’t like Bill one bit, but I will give him this: He’s not afraid to host someone with opposing views.

re: #1 albusteve

I think the reasons Common was invited is because he’s from Chicago, he knows Obama, and he’s popular. While you can agree or disagree on whether he should have been invited (I don’t think he should have been because the fallout was so predictable, and any White House has to be aware of the “optics”), I think his music kicks ass. I saw him open for Macy Gray in Houston back in 2000, and he rocked the house.

I think the point is that the assault weapons ban is popular among police agencies….
What Law Enforcement Says About Assault Weapons
These weapons pose a greater threat to law enforcement than anyone else.

Which may be why law enforcement starts shooting when one of those is pointed at them. Or if they think one is pointed at them.

Bill O’Reilly makes himself look like an idiot because he tries to defend indefensible positions. You can’t defend racial prejudice. Period.

re: #4 Kid A

I kind of think they see more advantages than disadvantages to inviting him really.

The people that would get worked up about him inviting a rapper to visit weren’t gonna vote for him anyways, but at the same time the Pres needs to seem connected to blacks and young people, to keep them motivated to actually turn out and vote.

(Not saying its 100% cynically plotted, but it would make sense if it was :D)

11 darthstar  Tue, May 17, 2011 4:17:14pm

The fact that Common is STILL IN THE WHITE HOUSE and hasn’t left justifies the fears of O’Reilly and others…nobody could have foreseen he was going to move in like that.

You mean like the guy with the sprinkler nozzle??

In a press conference, the LBPD spokesman admitted that the officers did not announce their presence and were concealed behind nearby shrubs and trees with a shotgun and sidearms. Witnesses all agree that the officers did not announce their presence and did not demand that he drop the item. It does not appear that the victim even knew police were in the area. He was shot repeatedly and died at the scene.

He was holding a sprinkler nozzle.

Bill reminded me of this Flame Warrior. Bobbing and weaving and only able to repeat talking points.

I admire Stewart. I would bounced Bill’s head off the desk a couple of seconds before the commercial break.

One of my favorite singers, Scott Weiland, was on Stern today talking about his life, his book just came out [Link: www.amazon.com…] It was tough to listen to, at the end, even Stern seemed a little concerned. Very hesitant speech, Stern was completing his sentences. He says he doesn’t do heroin, but still drinks, oy. As a recovering alcoholic, I heard me talking (just in a fog all day) when I was in the worst grips of my disease.

Heh…they have the Huckabee/Nugent clip from John Stewart on dKos right now…Huckabee talking about how he is a follower of Jesus juxtaposed with him playing bass while Nugent sings, “I make your pussy purr with a stroke of my hand…you know you’re gettin’ it from me.”

VERY easy Marsala wine sauce

Saute sliced shrooms in butter
Add one bottle of Marsala cooking wine
Bring just to boil
Reduce heat and add 1 pkg Lipton dry Onion/Mushroom soup mix
Stir till desired thickness

Funny thing happened to me on my way home from work. Stopped at megalomart to grab some pasta, and saw a guy who looked familiar, thought I mighta graduated with him. Got a good look at him later, appeared homeless. I was checking out and it occured to me that I was one of his jurors, found him guilty of raping his girlfriend and pulling a softball size chunk of hair out of her head. Needless to say I hot footed it outta there.

42 APox  Tue, May 17, 2011 5:07:29pm

It’s all a silly outrage to me in any case. Artists should and will push boundaries on cultural opinion on any issue. Nobody knows what Common really thinks, but I know if you asked him “Do you support cop killing?” He would answer with an emphatic no.

But, there is so much “gray” in life, which is brought out in poetry and in art. To be an influential artist you have to express that gray area in expressive ways. Rap does that, poetry does that… It shows a different point of view, where maybe the poor black male is coming from growing up in the ghetto, maybe feeling profiled or treated unfairly.

It is a ridiculous idea to judge an artist on a small sliver of their total career instead of taking them at their whole. In Common’s case, I believe he can be viewed as a magnificent and influential artist and someone who has had a positive impact on the youth in the communities he focuses on as well as a good role model.

Bill tries to make it so black and white and obfuscate Stewart by limiting the scope of this man’s career to one incident. It’s all just totally silly to me.

You could probably skip soup mix by adding some onion and using real mushrooms instead of those flavorless button mushrooms from the market. Dried porcine or shitake would work or even invest in fresh chantrelles. They may cost twice as much per pound but they have so much more flavor. Just use half the usual amount and it’ll be trice as delicious..

They wouldn’t dare. He’d shred whoever tried to paint him as a cop-killer sympathizer. (Metaphorically, of course.)

It really is fucking disgusting. Black dude (hip hop) = cop killer.

this is a really really really old meme. And Fox is really appealing to their av. age of 69.

Propaganda. Pravda today.

re: #166 Stanley Sea

I bitched at her one day when she tweeted about a dress. I understand she’s like 24 or something, but I was like “YOU HAVE THIS PLATFORM, FUCKING USE IT”

I was embarrassed for women.

She will grow.

She will. Also, I think keeping the cute and perky image helps her maintain that platform. She’s hardly a real political analyst, but she’s created a little niche for herself, and she seems to use it pretty well.

It makes me think well of McCain to see how protective his children are of him.

Notice how O’Reily kept say “BLACK Liberation”, “BLACK…”, “BLACK…”

“Fox News: Not racists but #1 with racists.”

I broadly agree with Stewart’s point, but I don’t think that the “selective outrage” bit in itself is a good argument.

Yes, people can be hypocrites, and only bring things like this up when it suits their narrative. But this does not really address the “the White House wasn’t wrong to invite Common” argument. It’s a diversion.

O’Reilly used a couple of dodgy arguments himself, though. :)

Having your ass handed to you that comprehensively must be painful - but then, Bill is used to it by now, so the only reason he allows it to happen is that he must get off on it somehow………

I love how the crew in Bill’s studio keeps snickering throughout all the interviews he conducts with Stewart.

In radio, they call it the “65-to-dead” demo
