Not Brand Echh #1: Who Says a Comic Book Has to Be Good?

The comic magazine for non-believers who hate comic magazines
Arts • Views: 38,733

Marvel’s “Not Brand Echh” was a short-lived (13 issues) attempt at humor in the style of Mad Magazine, mostly poking fun at their own superhero characters, but occasionally taking shots at their DC rivals as well. The Lizard Collection’s copy of the first issue (published in August 1967) isn’t in tip-top condition, but then, neither was the comedy.

Rutger Hauer just punched some guys eyes out with his thumbs…Blade Runner - director’s cut. First time I’ve seen this movie in probably 20 years…still good.

Trick question: What movie was set as being in the same universe as Blade Runner?

31 Shiplord Kirel  Sun, May 22, 2011 7:50:50pm

Mad publisher William M. Gaines was quite a character in his own right. I had long heard the story of him taking the usual gang of idiots to Haiti and paying an unannounced visit to the country’s only Mad subscriber after the latter failed to renew on time. I had suspected an urban legend, but it turns out to be true, though the gang had gone to Haiti on vacation and not specifically to confront the subscriber:
Gaines was devoted to his staff, and fostered an environment of humor and loyalty. This he accomplished through various means, notably the “Mad trips.” Each year, Gaines would pay for the magazine’s staff and its steadiest contributors to fly to an international locale. The first vacation, to Haiti, set the tone. Discovering that Mad had a grand total of one Haitian subscriber, Gaines arranged to have the group driven to the person’s house. There, surrounded by the magazine’s editors, artists and writers, Gaines formally presented the bewildered subscriber with a renewal card.

Herman Cain criticizes Obama on Palestine, then fumbles over Right of Return question.

“Where do you stand on the right of return?” asked Wallace.

“The right of return? [pause] The right of return?” asked Cain.

Wallace then offered more information, “The Palestinian right of return.”

“I think it should be negotiated,” Cain replied.

“Do you think the refugees, the people that were kicked out of the land in 1948 should be able to have any right to return to Israeli land?” Wallace further probed.

“Yes, but not under Palestinian conditions,” said Cain. “Yes, they should have the right to come back if that is a decision that Israel wants to make.”

“It’s up to Israel to determine things they want to accept,” he added. “I don’t think they have a problem with people returning. The issue is that there are some things they simply don’t want to give in on.”

That’s bad for Pakistan, especially the Orions. Each one is a multi-million dollar aircraft and their loss will give India greater ability to use its subs to scout Pakistan’s coast.

Eh it sort of was, in that the adventure probably should have been done around 5:00/4:40 but my brother wasn’t going to be willing to settle for the ending in the book so he needed to take a one man vision quest thingy in order to retrieve the true name of an evil free sprite that was holding a would be technomancer hostage by controlling her body so that he could then bind that free sprite to serve him, tell him to instead possess a bottle, and then break that bottle into a million billion little pieces.

It is a big deal to me. If they are challenging the President for his job, they should know basics about FP. I am no genius on Israel/Palestine issues but even I knew that question.

58 austin_blue  Sun, May 22, 2011 8:10:24pm

From Dragonfire1981, last post, last thread:

(It seems to me, and perhaps I’m wrong here, that one’s religious beliefs and ones duties as a civil servant would routinely clash in an ideal world.

For example, let’s say the majority of your constituents are in favor of Gay marriage but you are not because of your religious beliefs. In my opinion, the right thing would be to respect the wishes of the majority of the people and legalize gay marriage, since you have (supposedly) been elected to serve the public interest.

Having said that, if you do believe there is a God who is telling you that homosexuality is wrong than by passing legislation that legalizes gay marriage you are going against God’s supposed will, which is something no Christian wants to do. So it boils down to: Which interests come first, the people or yours?

But of course there’s also the grey areas of the true meaning of scriptures that argue that homosexuality is sinful and whether or not they have been accurately translated and so forth.

It’s also obvious that the current state of U.S. politics is VERY far from ideal.

Still though, an interesting moral conflict to ponder.)

No, sir or madam. It has nothing to do with either constituent desires or morality. It has to do with the Oath. And the Oath is pretty basic.

You swear to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic.

That means if your constituents believe that the Constitution does not give gay American citizens equal protection under the law, including access to civil (not religious) marriage, you must educate your constituents as to what the Equal Protection Clause means, including (especially!) the fact that they don’t have the option to pick and choose about who benefits.

It’s not necessarily about what your constituents *believe*, nor about your personal morality. It is always and forever about the Constitution.

Gods bless Barbara Jordan.

Only 6 P-3s were supplied to Pakistan: 3 in 1996, one of which crashed in 1999, and 3 more delivered in 2009-10. Tonight’s losses would reduce the force to just 3 aircraft. There are plans for 4 more.

It actually distresses me somewhat that the GOP continues to have absolutely no candidates who stand a decent chance of winning their party primaries and would present a challenge to an Obama second term. All the “RINOs” have either been run out of the party on a rail, decided to sit this election out, or (in the case of Romney) are playing to the TPers in the hopes that they can convince them that they’re every bit as loony.

How can you have a functional two-party government when one party is coasting along and the other is imploding? At this rate, I’m going to find myself voting for Obama come next November, not because I think he’s the better candidate, but because I’m scared shitless of letting the GOP’s candidate take the Big Chair.

I’m getting real pissed with that whole scene over there, they have already cost us a mint and for what?, some half baked fight with the Talis and AQ?…it’s not our fight anymore…and thanks for the updates

It’s because they’re sitting on a pile of nuke warheads that we’re scared shitless will fall into the hands of the Taliban or (worse) Al-Q if we cut off our support. So we’re left propping up a corrupt and ineffectual government, which is accepting our money as they dig the dagger deeper between our shoulder blades, because we fear what will happen if we walk away.

And it’s not just the direct effect. A governmental collapse in Pakistan could end with nukes being launched instead of stolen. So even if we suffered no damage, Pakistan already has missiles that can hit India and China. Our economy would take a pretty big whack if Mumbai or Shanghai were nuked.

Yeah, India’s in the middle of one hell of a modernization spree. They’re working themselves up to being a blue-water navy, with plans to have six aircraft carriers in service. They’ve already got one boomer undergoing sea trials, with plans for three more.

The Palin “mystique” fades away as soon as she starts getting asked non-scripted questions. Put her on the same stage as the rest of the yahoos and even Ron Paul would seem more on the ball than she. She might be able to win the nomination on star power alone, but her unfavorable poll numbers with independents and conservatives would assure that Obama could phone in his campaign.

98 Shiplord Kirel  Sun, May 22, 2011 8:47:04pm

P-8 Poseidon
This is the P-3’s LONG-awaited replacement. The sale of 12 of these to India for delivery in 2013 is the largest US arms deal yet with that country.
Compared with the P-3, the P-8 has considerably better flight performance and a more flexible weapons capability. Though intended for maritime patrol and ASW, it would have potential for long range overland operations under extreme circumstances (ie nuclear strike).

It wouldn’t be very bad if it was one city, though. The US itself had no major effect from test Bravo in the 1950’s and that bomb was 50 megatons. The really bad stuff would happen if multiple cites were hit. Then you start talking about enough soot to cause problems. Not so much radiation as a nuclear autumn (Pakistan doesn’t have enough nukes to cause a nuclear winter), meaning that enough soot and debris get thrown up to lower temperatures across the globe. Not enough so people freeze, and in the US there wouldn’t be starvation. But there might need to be rationing and since we’d have to cease sending out food aid to poor nations, qwuite a few places in Africa might well have mass die-offs.

That’s why I have serious doubts that she’ll ever jump into the candidate pool. She survives, nay thrives, by staying within the niche she’s found for herself, namely being paid to butcher the English language to produce little anti-Obama soundbytes for Fox News. If she ever seriously ran for the nomination, she’d be totally out of her element, looking like the village idiot when compared to the rest of the pack.

One likely scenario is that he’ll say he received a revelation from God that their judgment day proselytizing mission was so successful that he decided to delay the rapture by X period of time so that they can save even more souls. This assumes that a candidate will run that can play that game AND excite people outside of the GOP base. So far, I haven’t seen a single candidate that fits the bill, since the entire current 2012 field is completely lackluster.

At this point, I think all the truly viable candidates will hold off until 2016. The 2012 field right now looks like a bunch of people aiming to be the Walter Mondale/Michael Dukakis of the GOP. The only people who will lose shit are the teabaggers/birthers/wingnuts should Obama win a second term.

World Nut Daily is striking out into new territory with a claim that potential REPUBLICAN presidential candidates Bobby Jindal and Marco Rubio are not natural born citizens.
Now popular Republicans ‘not natural-born citizens’(Swamper re-post)

The Whirled nuts and their disciples are making up the law as they go along, claiming that both parents have to be citizens at the time of a child’s birth for the child to qualify as a “natural born citizen,” even if the birth indisputably take place in the US. This doctrine apparently originates with them, but it has plenty of support among swampers.

If the article is true, neither qualify for the presidency.

Both parents MUST be born in the USA.

If you define a natural born citizen as the framers originally meant it, then BOTH parents must be citizens AT THE TIME OF YOUR BIRTH in addition to the requirement that you must be born on American soil.

If this is so, Jindal, Rubio AND Obama are NOT natural born citizens ( yep, even with Obama’s Birth Certificate).

One of them claims parents must also be natural born, rather than naturalized, citizens:

Both parents MUST be born in the USA. Both of Obama’s parents weren’t born in the US. Both of them weren’t even citizens. Congress declared Obama to be elected president. I’d like to see Rubio run just to dare a court to rule him ineligible, and thus exposing how Congress shredded the US Constitution when they declared electoral votes for Obama to be valid.

What they really mean is that Jindal and Rubio are not white enough, in spite of their solid wingnut credentials.

Scientists set new download speed record

Scientists have set a new data speed record using just a single laser to transmit the equivalent of 700 DVDs in one second.

They say their discovery will not only help to fulfil the world’s burgeoning high-capacity bandwidth needs of cloud computing and 3D high definition TV, but provide an environmentally-friendly way of transmitting data over long distances.

Earlier this year, Japanese scientists set a world record sending 109 terabits per second using multiple lasers.

But the data rate of 26 terabits per second reported by the group of German, Swiss and UK scientists in today’s Nature Photonics is the largest line rate ever recorded using a single light source.

Just read the article again, and there’s more to be made fun of: “The amount of 26 terabits per second is the amount of data that would be generated by 400 million people making a phone call… Phone calls are not generating data traffic any longer, it is animated high-resolution data traffic that dominates the internet.” Original phone infrastructure is analog by definition, so it cannot generate any “data” which could be measured by internet standards, unless it’s digitized, in which case the measurement will be entierly dependent on techniques and standards being used.

I’m pretty much of the same mind. Except the only army I’ll be able to complete buying before the switch is Orks. I like the metal because it’s easy to strip and repaint, though I’ve heard Simple Green diluted 1:1 and some lifting/brushing can remove paint from resin.

Yeah, simple green is the way to go with the plastics, but only if you’re using the acrylic paints. I don’t even dilute it. Got one of those disposable electric toothbrushes to scrub them. It works best when you strip them as soon as you realize you messed up. Wait too long and the paint bonds to the plastic and becomes a real bitch to remove.

212 Kragar  Mon, May 23, 2011 12:10:57am

Now from a customization point of view, its infinitely easier to work with the plastic, using various bits from different sprues, no need to pin metal to support the weight, etc.

I do wish that GW would still make the support bits like they used to. Used to be able to buy metal sprues with plasma guns, melta guns, shotguns, etc.

These people, when they fail to impose their view of “Divine Law” on America, decide that they are exempt from the law of the land if it varies from their religious convictions.

I am at the other end of the scale, just putting down my second cup of coffee in the morning…

Justifiable in the moral sense. But in the legal sense, if we have people acting as if they were outside or above the law, then we wind up with dickheads like the Sovereign Citizens movement, killing policemen, or guys like the Unabomber.

I admire people like Thoreau or Rosa Parks who stood up for their convictions, but they were aware of the legal consequences. But because we have a Constitution that guarantees a fair trial, they were able to set an example that led to us improving our laws.

223 Sol Berdinowitz  Mon, May 23, 2011 1:13:43am

Henry David Thoreau got arrested for refusing to pay the poll tax, which he found unjust. When his friend Longfellow asked him what he was doing in jail, his response was “What are you doing out on the street?”

In other words, Thoreau was aware of the legal consequences of his actions and willing to fact them.

As long as you are willing to face the consequences…

226 watching you tiny alien kittens are  Mon, May 23, 2011 1:37:43am

What the…I don’t know…

Why doesn’t the scientific community abandon Darwin’s failed hypotheses? Simple: The Jewish-dominated media and educational establishment are determined that, like unconditional support of Israel, Holocaust mythology, hate laws, and “civil rights” favoritism, there will be no end to the relentless force-feeding of evolution. Belief in evolution is a prerequisite for Jewish supremacism’s new-world order.

Yet anti-Zionist leadership on the right remains oblivious to the fact that evolution is the largest, ugliest, most aggressive tentacle of the Jewish revolutionary octopus. Anti-Zionists are often evolutionists, claiming that Jews evolved in a way that makes them inherently degenerate, subversive, and corruptive. They make the most Luciferian, dehumanizing fable ever invented by pseudo-science into a pillar of their thinking!

Evolutionary theory undergirded the “might is right” philosophy of Germany decades before World War I. German “higher criticism” of the Bible washed away belief in the credibility of the Scriptures, particularly the Old Testament. Germans largely followed the same evolutionary/racist ethics that are prominent today in the racialist right.

Combined with virulent criticism of Jews, denying them their biblical role in God’s plan of the ages, evolution set the stage for demonization and violence against the Jewish people. Thus, evolution, stimulating racist premises of Aryan superiority, played a foundational role in energizing the Third Reich in its provocation of a second world war.
-Rev. Ted Pike, National Prayer Network.

How do people get to be this crazy? Darwin and Zionists and Nazis, oh my!

227 Sol Berdinowitz  Mon, May 23, 2011 1:42:36am

I have counter-question: Why are so many people who reject evolution so big into social Darwinism?

I’m kind of nervous this morning… mother-in-law is being rolled into surgery in 15 minutes or so. Surgery will take 2 to 9 hours. May be only major surgery but could be awfully major surgery.

The surgery is happening over two hours away (there are only a handful of docs who do this in the United States).

My wife let me go. With my mom only 7 months gone, I’m kind of … shall we say … “intense” emotionally about this.

To add a better “what the fuck” to this little story… the surgery is on my FIL’s (the Coyote grabber’s) 80th birthday.

Unfortunately, against a tornado even Fort Knox would have to yield. An EF-5 can produce winds in excess of 200 mph, and that grey-brown color? Oh yeah, that’s debris that the thing has been sucking up. It’s like a wrecking ball blasting through your house with the force of a cannon.

re: #298 thedopefishlives

A piece of straw can penetrate all the way through a palm tree if propelled by hurricane-force winds.

busted

Propelling a piece of straw at a palm tree at a distance of 50cm at 320mph (the world record for recorded wind speed at ground level), the straw only managed to penetrate the tree a quarter of an inch. Even firing at the tree while it was bent (to increase the size of the pores in the surface of the tree) at point blank range added no additional distance into the tree. A piece of reed was tested as the sturdiest organic object that might be mistaken for a piece of straw. At both ranges, the reed only managed to go about two inches into the tree. Additionally, Jamie tried a piece of piano wire, and at 50 cm, it flew not only through the tree but through a sheet of plywood on the wall behind it, partially embedding itself into the cement wall.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Lots of news coming out of Pakistan. First their security forces have apparently managed to retake the naval air station that the Taliban managed to infiltrate; but not before the Taliban did some serious damage and killed a dozen Pakistani soldiers. It took the Pakistani 16 hours to clear the base and secure it after a group of terrorists broke in. Various reports indicate that the terrorists wore suicide vests and were targeting the P3 Orions that operate from the station.

Then, there’s reports that Mullah Omar was killed. That’s not confirmed and the Taliban deny, but what was interesting is that the Pakistani officials interviewed seemed to think that Omar had been living in Quetta for the past decade.

Intel long thought that both Omar and Bin Laden were operating in and around that region with the ability to hop in and out of either Pakistan or Afghanistan being shielded by various tribes there

Moonbat losers meet outside AIPAC meeting…

Ladies and gentlemen, meet your anti-Israel lobby

With 10,000 people attending the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, anti-war group Code Pink has set up shop across the street from the Washington Convention Center to protest Israel.

The event, called “Move Over AIPAC,” features a faux brick wall to simulate the humilating checkpoints endured by Palestinians, and has a schedule that includes “nonviolence training,” “outdoor learning circles,” and a “justice festival.”

Below, you can watch video I shot of clown Patch Adams leading a rendition of the “underwear song” as seven people gather in what he calls the “world’s largest underwear.” When you’re watching, keep in mind two things. One, that I was compassionate enough to our readers to clip the earlier part of the video, in which Adams and several other protesters “mooned for peace.” And two, that other scheduled speakers at the conference include Helen Thomas, and professors Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, who pose as serious intellectuals and co-wrote the book the Israel Lobby.

20 minutes is a long time, but not a lot of people take warnings seriously (even though a warning is a confirmed sighting) because they cover such a large area and tornadoes, in particular, are so unpredictable. In this case, the sirens just came too late.

And like that, the latest attempt to broker a deal letting Yemen’s Saleh transition to a new government, has broken down into running gun battles between Saleh’s loyalists and opposition groups:

Yemeni loyalist forces fought a gunbattle on Monday with opponents of entrenched President Ali Abdullah Saleh one day after he backed out of a Gulf-brokered accord for him to step down.

The clashes in Sanaa cast renewed doubt on prospects for a political solution to a three-month crisis in which youth-led demonstrators, inspired by protests that swept aside the leaders of Egypt and Tunisia, are demanding an end to Saleh’s nearly 33-year rule.

FRONTLINE on PBS tonight: WikiSecrets

Attempts to establish a direct link from Manning to Assange

As the film tracks Manning from his deployment to Iraq through his arrest and imprisonment, several key questions emerge—among them, the shocking ease with which Manning browsed and downloaded so much classified information from Pentagon servers despite the widely available systems developed to prevent exactly this. The case presents an important cautionary note to the theory that lower-level analysts like Manning should have access to such a wide range of intelligence: “9/11 surfaced the fact that there was less than adequate sharing of information across the government,” says former Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte. “We went from a need-to-know philosophy to a need-to-share.” Former State Department official Larry Wilkerson says the government may have shared the information too widely: “Bradley Manning does not need to know what the secretary of defense said to his counterpart in Paris.”

WikiSecrets also examines the relationship between Manning and Julian Assange, the founder of WikilLeaks. In public statements, and in his interview with FRONTLINE, Assange has denied any direct contact with Manning or any WikiLeaks source. But hacker Lamo says that Manning indicated otherwise in their online chat: “He mentioned Julian Assange in the context Julian was the individual at WikiLeaks who he had initially establish contact with.”

I heard an interview with someone there who said they were given warning for 20 minutes of a tornado warning. It hit as the sirens went off though.

Lubbock has de-activated its warning sirens to save a little money. This is based on the dubious assumption that TV are radio are sufficient. It probably hasn’t occurred to the city bureaucrats that there are people here who don’t sit in front of a blaring idiot box for hours on end. Some people have emergency weather radios but these are widely believed to have a bad habit of waking you in the middle of the night for nothing.
Incidentally, the Metro Tower in Lubbock’s old downtown is the tallest building ever to survive a direct hit by an F-5 tornado (on May 11th, 1970). It is across the street from the city emergency offices.

One of the really odd things about the Lubbock tornado is that only about 10 people even claimed to have seen it, despite its long path through a densely populated area. There are no pictures of the tornado itself. This is because the tornado struck at night in the middle of an awesome wind and hail storm, with straight winds as high as 70mph and rain so heavy it limited visibility to a few feet.

Sen. Scott Brown says no to GOP Medicare plan

In what could be a boost for Democrats, GOP Sen. Scott Brown said Monday he will vote against a controversial Republican plan to revamp the popular Medicare program for seniors.

Brown, a moderate who is up for re-election next year in traditionally Democratic Massachusetts, announced his opposition to the Medicare proposal and the GOP budget authored by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., in a column for Politico.

More insanity from the darker realms of the Internet…

We have incrementally moved towards Marxism and now I think it’s at an accelerated pace. There are lots of indicators as to exactly how we’re moving along the lines of the Marxist model - if you look back historically at how societies, what they’ve done as they’ve moved toward Marxism, we’re doing all of those things.

One of which is, you look at Hitler - and one of the most disgusting things I hear is people who call Hitler “the extreme right.” The absolute opposite was true - it was the National Socialist Party, he was an extraordinarily off-the-scale leftist. But many Jews in America, for example, can’t identify with the Republican Party because they’re called the party of the right and they equate that to Hitler when in fact nothing could be further from the truth. So, that’s just a data point.

One of the things that Hitler did was he established the Brownshirts. The Brownshirts where his constabulary force to control the population because, as you’re making these radical changes, there has to be some entity that stands by you with the strength and the muscle to allow you to make these over the opposition and the protest of the sovereign, the people. So Hitler had the Brownshirts.

Well, in the lead-up to the election, during the campaigns, our current president said very openly, and you can find it on YouTube, if I am elected President , I will have a national civilian security force that is as large as and as powerful as the US military.

For what? Why do you need a national civilian security force?

Now most people say, well we haven’t seen any signs of the administration doing that. Until you go back and read what nobody in Washington read, and that’s the health care legislation that lays out a provision for the commissioning of officers to work directly for the President in time of a national emergency.

Now what would bring about a national emergency? An economic collapse, a terrorist attack, a natural disaster - we talked about all those things here - which would then allow for martial law. The foundation has been laid.

Libya: ‘Forced to rape in Misrata’

Before I go any further, let me acknowledge that it is clearly in the rebels’ interest to portray Col Gaddafi’s forces in the worst possible light.

It is also possible that the soldiers were coerced into telling us lies.

And there is a big difference between individual acts of violence committed during wartime and a systematic campaign to target civilians.

My impression was that the men were telling the truth and that - although there are credible stories of abuse of pro-Gaddafi troops by rebel forces - the conditions and atmosphere at the prison, which I have visited before, appeared benign.

Here, in their own words, then is what they told me, through a reliable interpreter.

The 17-year-old did most of the talking and his colleague occasionally nodded or added a few sentences. I’ve added some details in parenthesis.
‘Shot them in the leg’

“They brought us in a group of 400 people to Misrata, saying the city is under attack from Algerian and Egyptian mercenaries and that we have come here to liberate Misrata. They divided us into groups and we went our separate ways.

“First we knocked at a door and nobody opened so we broke the door and entered the house.

“The mother was screaming and when we pointed the gun at her, she stopped screaming.

“Then we tied up the mother and father and their boys [three of them] by their feet and hands. Then we shot every one of them in the leg.

“Then the officers took the girls upstairs, and we were told to go on the roof [to keep guard] until the officers had finished the rape and then we were told to rape the girls too.

“We felt scared, but when we refused to rape, they started to beat us.

“There were four girls aged between about 20 and 24.

“They were conscious [during the rapes]. I raped one.”

Blind Allegiance

“Blind Allegiance” is so full of Palin’s pettiness and incompetence that it defines her as little more than a small-town politician at a loss on the larger stage. Bailey realized she was ill-prepared for political superstardom soon after she was tapped for a spot on the Republican presidential ticket with John McCain. “Incredibly, I mostly still believed in the myth of Sarah and her ultimate mission,” he writes. “However, a piece of me could see she was in over her head.”

As her soaring popularity proved, her skills lay in firing up a crowd. And, Bailey asserts, she was happy to leave knowledge of the issues to others. As governor she created an editorial team to write op-eds on her behalf then remained detached from the process, refusing to study the issues or even familiarize herself with what her advisers turned out in her name. “She wanted credit without caring about even a fundamental understanding,” Bailey writes.

In his fervor, Bailey at first didn’t care that Palin lacked expertise — she had common sense. As she once e-mailed him, “Remember: amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.” But Bailey came to doubt his devotion, particularly after the presidential election defeat when Palin seemed to care little for governing Alaska and far more about cashing in on her celebrity. “Sarah hadn’t ever really been a full-time governor before being nabbed by McCain,” he writes, recalling that before the vote she wrote to him: “Pray that we win so we can all get out of that place.”

wsj worked hard to portray pawlenty as a non-conservative back in 2008

But in 2005, signs of his “progressive” instincts emerged. In a quest for new revenue, Mr. Pawlenty supported a 75 cents per-pack cigarette tax. He called it a “health impact” fee. No one was fooled. User fees are generally charged to ensure that those who use a government service pay for the cost of providing that service. In this case, however, it was obvious that smokers were just being tapped to fund health-care entitlement programs.

Following the tax hike, the governor pushed through a state-wide smoking ban in workplaces, restaurants and bars. Aggressive, Nanny-state government seems to be big with Republican governors these days — although policies such as smoking bans do little to stem the costly tide of state-run health care.

In 2006, liberal Democrats (there is no other kind here) proposed a universal health-care behemoth to cover all residents. Mr. Pawlenty responded with a more limited proposal to expand the state’s child health-care program, Minnesota Care, to cover all children. More recently, the governor’s Health Care Transformation Task Force recommended imposing a mandate — à la Massachusetts — on residents to buy health insurance.

eh. I had already concluded he was running.

Before I start figuring and wagering on who loses to Obama (grin), I will wait to see which of the following also enter: Palin, Bachmann, Perry, Romney, and Huntsman.

Pawlenty fights Perry for one crowd. Bachmann and Palin pull the same crowd with overlap of Cain. Romney and Huntsman compete and also pull numbers from Cain. Cain actually has great potential from multiple groups but runs into the Republican Bradley effect. Plus, he’s got a major health issue. (2006 diagnosis and treatment {surgery and chemo} for stage IV colon and liver cancer.)

I figure everyone’s got till the first week of June to get their announcements made. Anyone after that is playing catch-up and, barring a major Great White Hope entry, can be discounted.

But that’s just my guess.

It wouldn’t last 6 mths on the roads I drive.

That’s why I mentioned trail rated. Most Jeeps (Willys/AMC/Chrysler) are trail rated. My G. Cherokee can climb just about any hill, although it needs more ground clearance for some mud.

That photo isn’t the actual LR, but the exact twin of it. Mine has ‘761’ in the little black chalk number square, and the spare tire is still mounted on the hood (bonnet). They were both part of a run of 120 made by the British for the Belgian Army.

Jeff Conaway’s condition ‘increasingly grim’

Heard it was not an OD, which is good news.

My cat has me pretty well trained already, when I can’t find him anywhere and he wont answer my calls he knows I will go in the kitchen and shake his treat bag. Sure he will then show up in five seconds flat, looking for treats that I then have to provide, needless to say he is becoming very adept at hiding… ;)

Sepsis is really bad news.

The wife nearly died from it 2 years ago. They couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t responding, then they found her gall bladder was gangrenous.
