“Join the Fundamentalist RestorationReimagining of America.” Sounds a bit more honest to me.

I notice a comically oversized Alaska, but the thing I think is supposed to be Hawaii is rather tiny and doesn't appear to be an orange/red/yellow shade like everything else. Hmm...

Notice that "Fundamental Restoration of America" is in quotes on the tour bus.

I've been Googling the phrase, and it appears to have originated with Glenn Beck.

I heard that when they were discussing statehood for Alaska, Texas wanted it cut in two because they didn't want to be the second largest state. They were told, "If we do that, you'll be the third largest state."

11 Mattand  Thu, May 26, 2011 11:25:43am

I don't get why "Fundamentalist Restoration" is in quotes on the bus art. It's like she's saying it ironically.

That's one of the those grammar things that irritates me, like the difference between "its" and "it's".

I think it might be a process we as a nation need to go through honestly. A lot of republicans already did, and no realise the error of those ways. On RedState there is a lot of constant disparaging of Palin supporters out of fear she win the nomination. If she does win the primary I actually think it will move the country forward.

I think Alaska is true to scale on that map. It is quite big, I recall learning in geography class that it would stretch nearly from coast to coast if suporimposed on the mainland.

15 shutdown  Thu, May 26, 2011 11:26:22am

Hey, man - that's a NICE bus. I wonder if she will be parking it on the street in front of her new $1.7 million Scottsville home? That shoud piss off the neighbours...
Also, as a New Yorker, I would like to know why Alaska is the relative size of the Soviet Union.

16 Alexzander  Thu, May 26, 2011 11:26:48am

It is also worth taking note of the fact that the bus isn't clearly a presidential tour bus. I imagine she is still hedging in case she simply decides to support another candidate and continue to grow her own empire.

17 Joe G.  Thu, May 26, 2011 11:26:52am

re: #4 EastSider

Well, looking again it's not as bad as I first thought, but it certainly seems to be larger in relationship to Texas and the lower 48 than it should be, as it only has a bit more than twice the area. But I will grant that comic oversized is an, uh, overstatement.

The Republican war on science is alive and well...
Senate Report Finds Billions in Waste on Science Foundation Studies

The Oklahoma Republican issued a new report Thursday that concludes the National Science Foundation has misspent $3 billion on "waste, fraud, duplication and mismanagement." It offers a list of research projects that could have been left as questions for the universe.

Among them, $2 million to analyze 38 million photos on Flickr and cross-reference them against the site's social networking service. Turns out, researchers concluded, that friends generally post photos on the Internet depicting the same place at the same time.

Some other beauties: A $315,000 NSF-funded study on whether playing Facebook's FarmVille can help adults develop relationships; $80,000 to examine why the same teams always end up leading March Madness; and a $1.5 million grant for scientists to design a robot that can fold laundry -- at a rate of one towel every 25 minutes.

Those godless scientists are also sex maniacs....

Aside from the questionable science, Coburn's report documented numerous instances where the NSF funded potentially illicit behavior.

In one instance, two "romantically involved" workers went on 47 trips during the course of more than two years, at a cost of $144,000 to NSF. Other entities were forced to return hefty grants after misusing the funds on everything from alcohol to video games. The inspector general's office had investigated several of those cases.

The report documented one instance where employees were caught Jell-O wrestling at NSF's Antarctica research station. The organizer was fired over the incident.

UK wingnut alert:

A group which is opposed to abortion in all circumstances and favours an abstinence-based approach to sex education has been appointed to advise the government on sexual health.

The Life organisation has been invited to join a new sexual health forum set up to replace the Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV.

Stuart Cowie, Life's head of education, said: "We are delighted to be invited into the group, representing views that have not always been around on similar tables in the past."

In contrast, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) has been omitted from the forum despite its long-term position on the previous advisory group and 40-year track record in providing pregnancy counselling nationwide.

"We are disappointed and troubled to learn that having initially been invited to the sexual health forum we have been disinvited, particularly now we understand that Life have been offered a seat at the table," said Ann Furedi, chief executive of BPAS. "We find it puzzling that the Department of Health would want a group that is opposed to abortion and provides no sexual health services on its sexual health forum."

re: #23 Charles

The more I search the phrase, the clearer it is that the word "fundamental" is in there very deliberately, to signify fundamental Christianity. This phrase is all over the religious right websites -- it didn't start with Palin. It's a far right Dominionist meme.

Absolutely! It's a "dog whistle" for a portion of her base. And because she's not that bright, it's a very blunt one (to mix metaphors).

A policeman there broke it up, but then said "I didn't see anything" when I asked if he was going to arrest my attacker.

San Francisco’s Curious Attachment to the Male Foreskin

I’ve always thought of San Francisco as the very paragon of a live-and-let-live city. But it turns out if has a curious attachment to the male foreskin. This November, believe it or not, a measure will be on the ballot to ban circumcision for all males under the age of 18, making it an offense punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or up to one year in jail. Talk about putting skin in the game.

Make no mistake...she's running and she will be the nominee

running? yes. Nominee? ummm.

I said this last thread, I'll paraphrase it this time. There is a HUGE change in the GOP selection process. The Republicans are going to use proportional allocation of delegates. So if Ron Paul gets 10% of the primary voters, he gets 10% of the pledged delegates.

At this time (barring penalties and electoral changes this year) there will be 1909 pledged and 513 unpledged (aka super) delegates at the convention in Tampa. Assuming all the superdelegates go with one candidate (snicker - we're talking Rand Paul's rep and Murkowski's rep, just for two) that candidate needs over 1/3 of the popular vote. Realistically, they need at least 40% of the popular vote. That's the TOTAL popular vote.

Hi everyone,

Sarah Palin here!

I just want to say how excited I am for having this fire in my belly which, if you think about it how I had it before but didn't really have it for the Governorship, just goes to show how awesome things will be if I do decide to run!

You know, I've known a lot of you here since over two years, and I just wanted to say that it's been such a great ride seeing how you all support my posts and feelings on these matters, like the time I talked a lot about Alass-ka and how it's given me wisdom which I take from my church. But even more than that, you've all shown me such wonderful gratitude for being here and being so square with you all. So, if I do decide to run, I want to say that I will try to post here more often and make sure you all feel my recpricocated love, because I know that you supporters out there are having a wonderful time telling me how great I am and how I really should be up there in the big house in the sky down there on earth in Washington DC.

So, I'll make a campaign pledge to you all, which I will try to keep as much as possible: If I do run, it'll be GO TEAM LGF!!! all the way until I get too busy with my life reading all those important magazines and papers that I aridvly watch every day to make sure I know exactly how socialist our country is becoming!

Do I love you guys???

True. Double sad, though, is that many historical places in the Boston area are public and free with minimal touristy stuff about them. Granted, in many of those cases you basically need a guide to appreciate the site/know what it is.

However, the standard to apply to them should be: "Would a Church group be allowed to do this." As far as I know, a Church group is free to use the park system, within the law, and to apply and reserve picnic grounds. The Boy Scouts shouldn't be treated any differently from other private religious organizations, whether it's Quakers, Catholics, Jews, or the Ku Klux Klan.

Thing is, although some of the political classes are chipperly and ineffectually progressive, San Francisco is mostly a Democratic machine town, dominated by business interests and with a voting majority of middle-class people with mundane concerns. Think Chicago.

Berkeley, now, Berkeley is EXACTLY what people think San Francisco is.

Berkeley is SF on steroids.

They even have a 'sustainable' deli and they let you know it. Over ands over and over.

Personally, I think the Boy Scouts of America is pure evil. They like to be a private organization when it suits them, and a "public one" at other times. Staunch Libertarian Ron Paul votes for bills that give them public funds. (Explain that one!)

Really? Googling "Fundamental Restoration of America" -Palin (excluding results that include the term Palin) does not give a lot of results.

Let me draw a parallel.

There was an effort to ban "Shark Fin Soup."

Why? Because the practice of "finning" is cruel and wasteful. They cut fins off of live sharks and dump the shark back in the water. In fact, this practice violates several religious commandments, including one of the seven Noachide laws that (some believe) is binding on all Humanity.

However, I, and every other Jew I know, was against this legislation. Why? It seemed to be specifically aimed at one ethnic group, and I can't judge how culturally and religiously important this practice is for them.

(Similarly, most Jews I know Including myself--even traditionally observant ones--voted NO on California Proposition 8. Why? Because they were afraid it would erode the separation of Church and State, a concept which is important for religious minorities.)

what is truly hilarious is the "Fundamental Restoration" would have to get rid altogether of the Socialist-written Pledge of Allegiance snippet on the back of the bus. The Pledge was not even written until 1892 some 100 years after the Founding Fathers, and by a hard-core Socialist no less.

And the "Under God" phrase wasn't written in until the 1950's. Hardly a "Fundamental Restoration" if they include this Pledge- a concept that many if not most of the Founding Fathers would have been outraged to have been compelled to say.

"Fundamental Restoration" is a crock of stinking sh**. What the Palin/Beck crowd wants is a hard-right Christian Theocracy, and this is where they are truly dishonest in their sloganeering.

Baptism is supposed to be more symbolic than anything else. It's not like they're checking a tire for air leaks. You just need to drizzle a little water over the person...I never understood full immersion baptisms - even for adults - especially for adults, actually. Grow the fuck up.

It's not symbolic for Catholics--it's a critical element of salvation. Failure to perform it, or a couple exotic variations, puts the soul pretty well beyond the pale.

The shark fin thing is up there with bush meat in 'I'm sorry but some delicacies aren't more important than saving species' (and remember, its a luxury tiem not a religious service or anything)

I've got a lunch date on Friday. She's on Leavenworth near Sutter..if I recall correctly, it is a short walk and a jump on the 1 to reach Chinatown.

She's an interesting combination of Turkish, blended with American values, yet a longing for the old world that she satisfies with tango dancing.

She also likes food - loves it - especially fusion dishes, and less than traveled flavors. For example, when i took her to Mission Chinese, we consumed bok choi with beef cheek and black bean sauce, and kung pao corned beef with chilis. Wonderful dishes.

I know she'll appreciate shark fin soup too.

It's a weird town for a cop. You got ghetto, you got a big homeless population, much of it altered on all sorts of things, you got the students, you got the radicals, you got the regular people...

I guess many small cities have all of this, but Berkeley takes it to a new level in some ways.

True. The radical students at UCB (The Open Ward) are a very large voting block. Some strangely interesting people get elected to local government and then appoint their like minded associates into the bureaucracy. Its quite a social laboratory and a wonder that it functions at all. In fairness, there are some more traditional thinkers that get elected - thank goodness. The Berkeley hills are an exquisite place to live and visit.

like the idea of jesus as a sacrifice for sins, baptism is difficult for modern people to understand because the original jewish context of 2000 years ago is no longer familiar to us

at that time both men and women were required to immerse themselves in a mikvah, a ritual bath, in order to become purified enough to pray, and after "contamination" from various sources

john the baptist believed in a special mikvah and a special purification that was only possible in the "live" waters of the jordan - he didn't believe that artifical baths, even if they used "live" water, were sufficient. he also promoted a more profound and life changing meaning for purification by mikvah

No you don't. She shouldn't be within a thousand miles of the presidency. A throw of the dice, 80% Obama, 20% somebody like Huntsman, is a better bet for the country than 99% Obama, 1% Palin.

We cannot afford, ever, to have somebody so fundamentally unserious in that office.

I agree about the danger, but on the other hand, sometimes the only way to defeat the kind of person who goes around criticizing the way other people do things is to put them in charge just to show how badly they suck at it. I don't want her to be President, but as the GOP nom, she'd have a chance to show people once and for all how unqualified she is for the job.

Which is why Trump never actually runs. He's knows that The Mystery Of Al Capone's Vault is only fascinating as long as you don't open it. Being at the top of the ticket would, I think, give Palin (or Newt or many others) a long overdue chance to show the world their own vaults are empty.

I have photos of my daughter hanging from an overhead water conduit, to scoop a bottle from the Jordan near Dan. (She gave it to her pastor for the Baptismal font in Alabama.) Two kayakers are paddling by in the background.

Friend of mine's grandpa was a Lutheran minister. He went on a trip to Israel and wanted to bring back water from the Jordan to baptize the grandbaby on the way. All he had was a gin bottle, so he finished the gin, rinsed the bottle out, and filled it with water from the river.

Explaining this to the El Al people on the way out was slightly complicated, but then again, they've seen in all.

Notes from a names enthusiast--during the Crusades there is a corresponding trend of children named 'Jordan' in Europe, signifying that they were baptized with water brought home from the Holy Land.

re: #158 SanFranciscoZionist

Thing is, although some of the political classes are chipperly and ineffectually progressive, San Francisco is mostly a Democratic machine town, dominated by business interests and with a voting majority of middle-class people with mundane concerns. Think Chicago.

Berkeley, now, Berkeley is EXACTLY what people think San Francisco is.

Used to work in Berkeley. Great town for books and music purchasing, without question.

To me, the Berkeley 'thing' was encapsulated by three particular details:

1. Columbus Day (the date) is definitely observed; however, the city observes it as "Indigenous Peoples' Day".

2. Once, on a Friday, I had to scramble like hell to get blue-line copies of an architectural plan to the City admin offices so we could begin work on a project. Ran like crazy, almost got speeding tix, the whole magilla. Ran up the steps to the main City offices, and there were signs on the door indicating the city offices were closed "in observance of Malcolm X's birthday".

3. Some time back, in the wake of the Naked Guy episode and in standard Berkeley fashion, they passed an attempt at a gender-neutral law which banned ALL folks from going topless, regardless of gender. This has resulted in an annual observance of Breast Freedom Day, whereby participants head to Peoples' Park to let their freak flags fly. It's highly amusing....

But, it's the home of the original Amoeba Records, great restaurants, the Greek Theater (one of the finest outdoor venues, with the BEST view, I've ever attended) and gorgeous Craftsman and Deco architecture all over.

For me, the good far outstrips the odd.

Oh nothing drives me crazier than the way these people have confiscated the imagery and mythology of our founding...as if it belongs to only them.

Drives me crazy

In a similar vein:

I had the misfortune of receiving the The National Center for Constitutional Studies's The Real George Washington a few years back (a well-intentioned Xmas gift from some Fox News-addicted seniors.) The NCCS is one of those right-wing think tanks that pushes the "US is a Christian nation" meme. They're also highly praised by Glenn Beck, if that helps clarify things.

I knew nothing of the book's publisher at the time. Once I found out who they were, I took a hard critical look at the book. Long story short: the authors, to bolster their shaky hypothesis that Washington was actually anti-slavery, omit any reference to him signing the 1793 Fugitive Slave Act into law.

I was stunned. The complete intellectual dishonesty it takes to censor history while claiming your book tells the story of the "real" George Washington is appalling. Further research showed the authors also ignored the case of Oney Judge, an escaped slave Washington tried to abduct twice.

I wound up not finishing the book and sold it on eBay. It was a real eye-opener as to what some on the far right will do to mold the Founding Fathers to fit their own myopic vision of what this country is about.

It is the responsibility of every young person of voting age to get out there and assert that the progress of the last hundred or so years, socially, morally and ethically is not reversible.
