Breaking: WI Man Arrested for Plotting to Kill Abortion Doctor

The pro-life underground turns murderous again
US News • Views: 50,853

Just coming across the wires from Madison, Wisconsin: Feds: Wis. man planned to kill abortion doctor.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Marshfield man who planned to kill abortion providers in Madison this week was thwarted on the eve of the intended attack when his gun accidentally fired in a motel room, leading to his arrest for reckless endangerment, according to a federal complaint filed Thursday.

Ralph Lang, 63, confessed his intentions to investigators, saying his goal was “to lay out abortionists because they are killing babies,” the complaint said. He was charged with attempting to injure or intimidate a person who provides reproductive health services. He was scheduled for an initial appearance Friday. …

Lang had a history of targeting Planned Parenthood buildings. Court documents said he was arrested in 2007 outside a Madison branch, telling officers that everyone in the building deserved to be executed and that police were failing in their jobs by not carrying out the executions.

He told authorities he bought the .38 caliber gun about two years after his arrest “to help end abortion.”

I think it’s well past “high time” when we start treating these people, their collaborators, and their enablers for the terrorists they are.

Quite frankly, I wouldn’t mind seeing them share space with their Jihadi counter parts at Gitmo.

I’d mind, but I would like to see how the pro-torture crowd would react to the suggestion that this fellow be subjected to waterboarding to determine if he’s a “lone wolf” or if this was a team effort.

It would be interesting to know how he got it. Private sales between individuals are, essentially, unregulated though according to federal law if you have reason to suspect that someone does not have the legal right to possess then you are forbidden to sell to them. I do not, however, know of any prosecutions for that.

Wisconsin does have it’s own background check for handguns ($13 to the state!) and a 48 hour waiting period. Any attempt to purchase at an FFL by someone with a felony record will get bounced. Saw them get asked to “delay” a fellow from leaving till an LEO could get there once :D

He’s just a disturbed “lone wolf”. You know, like the guy who killed Dr. Tiller, or Eric Robert Rudolph, or the nutbars that threaten and intimidate people who work in abortion clinics.

Don’t you ever listen to talk radio? These people aren’t terrorists. They’re just individual freaks acting out. =P

Assuming his prior 2007 arrest resulted in a felony conviction, reckless endangerment is what he’s been arrested with now, for discharging a gun in a motel room. Since his prior arrest was outside a clinic it was probably for trespassing or suchlike.

Bachmann hints strongly at a 2012 run

It wasn’t an announcement, exactly, but an announcement of an announcement, which sounded pretty close to the same thing.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), whose flirtation with running for president has generated strong buzz among conservative activists in Iowa, told reporters Thursday night that she plans an “all-important announcement which will happen in the month of June, which I am pleased to tell you tonight will be made in Iowa. And I can also tell you that announcement will be made in the city where I was born, in Waterloo.”

[…]

Oh yeah… bring it baby, bring it.

55 Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All  Thu, May 26, 2011 7:18:54pm

It’s reached the point where more and more of the right wing feel justified in acting out an extremist position. In this case, that since ‘abortion is murder’, it’s ok to kill murderers. You don’t need a lot of people to feel this way to effectively intimidate and terrorize other people. And as the Anti Abortion crowd remains silent, or gives tepid ‘denouncements’ from one side of their mouth while still shouting that ‘abortion is murder’ and that ‘abortion doctors are murderers’, the fanatics are emboldened and that the ends justify the means.

As the Quote says (or close enough), “In order for Evil to succeed, Good just has to do nothing.” As the Anti-Abortion crowd sits on their hands as Abortion Doctors are terrorized and murdered, They give implicit support and comfort to those who commit those acts. This can not continue.

And the old-timers will talk about how easy the new guys have it because even though the President’s a gay black Jewish woman, everyone in America’s basically cool with that.

Oh, and the old-timers will also reminisce about that time “the beast” got stuck in Ireland.

GOP anti-abortion fervor hits fever pitch

Republicans have made no secret of their opposition to the legality of abortion. In fact, between their resurgence last November and the end of March, they proposed 916 measures in 49 state legislatures relating to reproductive rights, health, and access, according to the Guttmacher Institute. So much for “Jobs, jobs, jobs.”

In South Dakota, the GOP has tripled the pre-abortion waiting requirement, from 24 to 72 hours- the longest in the country. This would have a negative impact on women in the mostly rural state who already often have to take time off from work to travel to a clinic. In addition, it is now required that the woman meet with an abortion crisis counselor in the interim. These crisis centers are often run by pro-life groups to discourage women from seeking abortions.

That pales in comparison to a North Dakota bill that would expand the definition “of justifiable homicide” to include killings that are intended to prevent harm to a fetus- therefore legalizing the killing of abortion providers. While it passed out of the House Committee, it was shelved following a national outcry.

re: #54 Cannadian Club Akbar

I’ve know a Saturday Night Special to have 2 barrels on top of each other and small enough to stick it in a boot.

“Saturday Night Special” was a term invented to demonize small and inexpensive firearms that were predominantly owned by poor people for self & home protection. These could be two shot derringers as you suggest but more often were very low cost revolvers in .22, .32 & .38 or semi-autos made in the same calibers (.380 in place of .38 special) and often made of zinc or pot metal to keep the cost even lower. Most of these had very short life expectancies but were generally never fired unless in extreme situations. The GCA of 1968 made importing such illegal and only a few manufacturers in America continued (Lorcin, Ravin & the rest of the “Ring Of Fire” makers out west). Banning them probably lowered some suicide and accident rates at the cost of disarming those least able to afford better defenses.

These people live in mansions and palaces, living like kings above the law, growing wealthier and wealthier on the backs of the faithful. And when they get caught committing these heinous crimes, it’s never their fault. It’s the hippies’ fault, or the gays’ fault, or the secularists’ fault.

I am sick to death of it, and if I had my way….

Well, I respect this blog to much to say what I’m really thinking right now.

Yeah—still the same old suck though. The pope is not likely ever to have heard of the priest—same, but less so for the archbishop. His relation to a parish priest is like that of a two-star to a staff sergeant.

Quite frankly, I wouldn’t mind seeing them share space with their Jihadi counter parts at Gitmo.

/Okay, I would mind, but only a little

Abortion clinic bombers are terrorists. People who assist them are criminals. But don’t blame everyone in the anti-abortion movement. But I think that some people would consider anyone who speaks out against abortion to be an “enabler.”

I can remember back in the days when there were abortion clinic bombings. People were blaming the Christian Coalition even though the CC was speaking out against the violence and was cooperating with the FBI and police in trying to find the bombers.

Let’s go after the bombers and other criminals.

A Marshfield man who planned to kill abortion providers in Madison this week was thwarted on the eve of the intended attack when his gun accidentally fired in a motel room, leading to his arrest for reckless endangerment, according to a federal complaint filed Thursday.

No, it didn’t. He accidentally fired his gun by virtue of having his boogerhook on the bang switch.

May seem like a minor quibble to non-crazy people, but it’s a pet peeve of mine. I contend that a large reason for both the fascination with and apprehension of firearms derives from their portrayal in news media as unpredictable devices with a mind of their own, and portrayal in movies as magic talismans that blow people through glass windows and cause a car to explode when $ActionHero fires a round at the gas tank.

The jet stream is dipping *way* south this spring. Cold in west and mid-central US. Lots of lifties in the atmosphere further south, with beaucoups moisture pumping in from the Gulf. Ideal environment for big ass super cells and clusters. When you have an environment where cumulonimbus cells reach 65,000 feet, which has been common this spring, mayhem ensues. And it’s still May. Most tornados are spikes or ropes which are f-1s and f-2s. When you get something a mile wide it is a “wedge”, “big wedge”, or “maxi-wedge”. Those are f-4s and f-5s.

Record Snowpacks Could Threaten Western States

Thanks to a blizzard-filled winter and an unusually cold and wet spring, more than 90 measuring sites from Montana to New Mexico and California to Colorado have record snowpack totals on the ground for late May, according to a federal report released last week.

Those giant and spectacularly beautiful snowpacks will now melt under the hotter, sunnier skies of June — mildly if weather conditions are just right, wildly and perhaps catastrophically if they are not.

Fear of a sudden thaw, releasing millions of gallons of water through river channels and narrow canyons, has disaster experts on edge.

“All we can do is watch and wait,” said Bob Struble, the director of emergency management for Routt County in north-central Colorado. The county’s largest community, Steamboat Springs, sits about 30 miles from the headwaters of the Yampa River, a major tributary of the Colorado River that has 17 feet of snow or more in parts of its watershed.

It’s making things quite cold here in Chicagoland. But it should be around 60 tomorrow, and sunny. And that’s good because my dad and I are going to a Cubs game. One of the managers at work lucked into a tickets package, so the office is closing for Memorial Day weekend at noon and a bunch of us are going to the game. We can each bring someone. and I’m bringing my dad. I’d invite my best friend, but he’s a Sox fan of the Cubs-hating variety.

Shit, dude, we’ve already hit 100 and are under “exceptional drought” conditions.

Most tornados are spikes or ropes which are f-1s and f-2s. When you get something a mile wide it is a “wedge”, “big wedge”, or “maxi-wedge”. Those are f-4s and f-5s.

With those, you are either lucky or dead.

Wedge is what I meant. Well, it was developing or at least I thought it was. Anvil of course means the tops. Lots of people, truckers, etc., started hunkering down but we decided to high tail it out of the area and drove across North Dakota in a day.

It’s like everything is run by a city council these days. Meeting upon meetings. Studies upon studies. Community hearings that never end. Everyone throwing their two cents in. One year we’re going back to the moon and the next year the project is canceled. We’ve lost that “can do” attitude. Kick the tires and light the fire and let’s get this show on the road! Nope, won’t happen and everything will continue to take forever and a day to accomplish. Then when it’s finally completed — if it’s ever completed — it’s over designed and over budget.

Archaeologists Find 17 Pyramids, 1K Tombs, 3K Settlements Using Online Satellite Images

Exceeding the discovery of 2,000 new archaeological sites using Google Earth, scientists have now found 17 Egyptian pyramids, 1,000 tombs and 3,000 Nile Delta settlements previously lost to sand and time.

The tech-happy group from the University of Alabama purchased imagery online from orbiting satellites and used image-filtering software to identify the locations, which they spot-checked and test-excavated in person.

Pulling down images from a satellite orbiting at a height of 400 miles but which can capture objects less than a yard across, the scientists used infrared imaging to highlight differences in soil density.

That’s one tough airplane…

The huge bomber hit the water at an indicated airspeed of 230 miles per hour. The contact with the lake immediately tore three of the four engines off the plane. The pilot managed to wrestle the bomber back into the air and then ditch; all members of the crew managed to get out alive before the B-29 sank.

Ominous development in Mexico:

Mexican officials seize ‘narcotank’

Authorities in Jalisco, Mexico, recently seized this tricked-out 2011 Ford F-150 Super Duty truck, above, that had been transformed by drug gang members into an obviously DIY armored vehicle. The steel-plated “Z Monster,” as the truck was called, could fit 20 men and was outfitted with a rotating machine gun turret.

Drug gangs are crafting armored “narcotanks” in order to battle the Mexican military—and each other. Security forces complain they’re battling gangs that are better armed than they are. In Colombia, gangs have been caught using homemade submarines, and other cartels use ultra-light airplanes to transport drugs to the United States without grabbing the attention of the Border Patrol. The L.A. Times’ Daniel Hernandez reports that The Zetas and Gulf cartels wear military-style uniforms, making them “indistinguishable from actual soldiers” and confusing the locals.

Note the shield surrounding the machine gun mount. That’s a sign the drug gangs thought ahead. APC (this thing is an armored personnel carrier, not a tank) machine gunners are prime targets for snipers and smart fighting forces add shield to their machine gun mounts to keep their gunners alive.

As a note, the final part of the sequel does indeed take place in the Tomb of Dead Gods and does indeed feature an aspect of Orcus, from which I derived the character of Dorkus to mock Stalker ‘Daedalus’ AKA Rodan.

Philippine Congress still going over the Reproductive Health Bill. For those just tuning in, the bill is intended to subsidize the cost of contraceptives in order to make them more available to the poor (who would have extremely high birth rates as it is.)

It is not intended to be a magic bullet to our poverty as it is a way to halt the birth rate and make further economic reforms more manageable.

Contraceptives are legal in the Philippines, however their use is highly frowned upon by the dominant local Catholic Church. Through the use of technical lingo they have even “automated excommunication,” something not taken very lightly in this deeply religious country.

In any event I need something to prevent me from punching something or unleashing my infamous paint roller.

The City That Waits was banished to the Shadowfell after it broke a pact with Orcus. He banished it and left its residents to die in misery, never again seeing the sun. Mac`s Supposed Immunity to Security Threats Gone Forever

Over the years, Mac users have been conditioned to believe that their computers were immune from security threats. The folks who went to the Apple Store to get a Mac were told by friends, family and even Apple that they were much safer using a Mac than they would be with a Windows-based computer. And so, over the years, a general sense of complacency has emerged.

But that house of cards came crumbling down as of late when Mac Defender starting making its rounds in the Mac ecosystem. Apple took too long to respond to the issue, and as expected, many of its supporters called it a red herring. But as the number of people who complained about these fake antivirus scams started to pile up, it quickly became clear that it was not a joke. Mac Defender, along with other malicious variants related to it, has become a major problem for Apple users.

The time has come for those folks and all others to acknowledge the simple fact that many security experts have been saying for far too long: Macs are not immune from security threat and users have to protect themselves.

Welcome to the party.

There is a certain form of linear thinking that leads us to believe that more policemen = more police protection.

That is not necessarily the case, it is a also a matter of the degree of training and the quality of police protection, not just sheer numbers.

A person who is opposed, even adamantly opposed to abortion but does not promote or condone violence is not responsible for these killers in any way.

But a lot of people high up the political anti-choice movement (Randall Terry, I’m looking at you) have made a career of whipping up frenzy, blowing the dogwhistles, and looking deeply affronted if anyone suggests they bear some responsibility.

But: There is a really nice corner store on the corner of Turk and Jones, the G&H grocery, that’s run by an absolute sweetheart of a Palestinian guy. He’s one of those Palestinians who got the hell out and is trying to get the rest of his family out. He has a protracted legal battle with the Israeli government about some land he owned, but he’s not bitter about it, just kind of resigned. The problem is that America is losing its ability to allow for compromise and a middle ground: the “I disagree with what you say but I will defend your right to say it” attitude. Now it is all about silencing or drowning out any dissenting voices.

The tricky part are people who honestly believe that abortion is ‘murder’. While I pretty much think they have the right to express that opinion (though, insofar as murder is defined by the law, they’re kind of committing slander), I also think that opinion helps to fuel the real, actual murder of doctors.

It’s difficult to figure out that line.

The problem is that the middle ground is (seen as?) the cause of the problem - watered-down and ineffective legislation leading to an increasingly bloated bureaucracy. As a result America lags behind most of the rest of the developed world in a number of social factors and modern American conservatives want to bring that back.

I would have to draw an extreme analogy to a forest fire. Water is no longer enough. The only way to stop this fire is to burn everything at its perimeter.

Seismologists Tried for Manslaughter for Not Predicting Earthquake

[Link: news.yahoo.com…]

” Earthquake prediction can be a grave, and faulty science, and in the case of Italian seismologists who are being tried for the manslaughter of the people who died in the 2009 L’Aquila quake, it can have legal consequences.

The group of seven, including six seismologists and a government official, reportedly didn’t alert the public ahead of time of the risk of the L’Aquila earthquake, which occurred on April 6 of that year, killing around 300 people, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

But most scientists would agree it’s not their fault they couldn’t predict the wrath of Mother Nature.

“We’re not able to predict earthquakes very well at all,” John Vidale, a Washington State seismologist and professor at the University of Washington, told LiveScience.

Even though advances have been made, the day scientists are able to forecast earthquakes is still “far away,” Dimitar Ouzounov, a professor of earth sciences at Chapman University in California, said this month regarding the prediction of the March 11 earthquake in Japan.”

Man - and I thought we in the U.S. was a litigation happy land. That’s just nutty and irresponsible….

Well special is in the eye of the beholder…

If I were going to get something with religious significance from her for a 40th (AND MAZEL TOV) I would want something I would use all the time and without competition.

Yes I meant knit keepah from my wife. When I wore it, I would think of the effort she put into it (and me). Initials would be optional. What would matter would be the love she put into it.

Kiddish cups are funny with me because I have an heirloom one that has been in my family for generations. I can’t imagine one “competing” with it.

ludwig, this one is for you:

Allergies getting worse in the US, and one of the factors - climate change.

Oh, and among the top 10 worst cities for allergies, that former safe haven of Phoenix. I guess everyone moving there and then demanding to have lawns and all the comforts of their prior climes has led to it turning into an allergy hell.

I think some of the problem is that we’re simply not doing as much stuff outdoors as we used to - and then when we’re finally exposed to stuff like pollen, we get allergic reactions. I used to have real bad allergies in the spring, but since moving to the house, they’ve gotten progressively better - still sometimes need otc meds, but nothing as bad as i used to get, probably b/c I spend a lot more time in the garden working on getting it tip-top. If kids are sitting and playing on their computers and not getting outdoors, they’re not getting exposed like they used to. That adds to their long term misery IMO in more ways than one.

Cain’s a business man - like Donald Trump except he didn’t inherit his wealth. Talking about our country like a business is a great strategy - for about fifteen minutes before the metaphor starts to unravel. The US should run like a non-profit, but good luck selling that to the GOP.

Not that people 100 years ago all lived in filth, their houses were tidy but there were most often stalls and stables in or near their houses, and children were much more regularly exposed to dust, dirt and pollen from a very young age.

It the very lack of early exposure that prompts the body to react to every grain of dust or pollen as a potential threat.

In Connecticut, my parents had 9 1/2 acres of mixed light woods and swampland. real swamp yankee territory. I would go and muck about on the weekends from dawn to dusk, and when I got back my mom would literally hose me down before letting me in the house. I loved it.

In San Francisco, things were cleaner but I swam in the ocean every week and went to Golden Gate park almost every day.

Obdi - I did read an article where there was a study one of children in India, and the researchers were expecting to find these kids miserable with allergies. And they found very few allergies, whereas kids growing up in more sterile environments had tons of allergies. The conclusion was something along the lines of - your immune system has a job to perform; and if it is kept from performing the job it was meant to, then it will FIND a way to do SOMETHING. The result: Allergies.

I don’t know enough about how all this works to know how accurate that conclusion is; all I know is that to me, it seems reasonable.

Yeah, that’s the accepted mainstream medical perspective on it. However, there’s also the twist that being exposed to high doses of something will, eventually, make you allergic. Those women who work at stuffing goose dander into pillows wind up becoming allergic to the dander quite often. So there’s such thing as too much.

It’s all kind of fascinating, especially at the molecular level.

He’s going to be exposed to all sorts of things that most “modern” parents would shudder at, simply because that’s what we did as children and we’re not dead yet.

I would not subject my kids to that, but I understand about letting kids run around and get dirty and dinged up. Any normal healthy kid should not be able to get through a summer without being covered in scratches and bruises.

While we’re on the subject of allergies, does anyone know what caused these life-threatening peanut allergies? The kind where the entire cafeteria and school building has to be totally swept for peanut residue? When I was a kid I never heard of kids dropping dead because someone else ate a peanut butter sandwich on the school bus.

Pretty much this. I am not going to follow my child around with a bottle of hand sanitizer. He will go out and play baseball and roughhouse with neighborhood boys and come home when his mother calls, OR ELSE.

That’s a weird one. I don’t think anyone has found the cause. Some people blame Soy but I strongly suspect preservatives and processed foods might be the cause.

Some of it may be increased allergy sensitivity due to cleaner environments. But a lot is just better medical reporting, and greater penetration of peanut products, like peanut oil. Once food companies started their mass-creation of food, then there was a lot more crossover of peanuts onto other foods.

If it’s Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, it means that Assad is busy murdering protesters (again).

A total of eight protesters were killed Friday as anti-government demonstrations spread throughout the country. Three protesters were shot dead as live fire was used to disperse hundreds of protesters in the Qatana suburb east of the capital Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Earlier on Friday, Syrian security forces killed four protesters in the southern town of Daal as demonstrations demanding the removal of President Bashar Assad swept the area, residents and activists said.

I always get annoyed when I’m following a school bus home from school, and it pulls up to a stop, and there’s a squadron of soccer moms waiting to pick up their little munchkins and drive them the 2 blocks up the street to the house. Kids can WALK, you know, and it might help get out some of that energy that parents mistake for ADHD and get them on Ritalin for.

Above all, kids crave attention. If you don’t give it to them, they’re going to go nuts.

I think we’re all generally seeing the same thing. Planning all the activities for kids means they’re out of the way while parents think they’re enriching the kid. In fairness, there’s no way we can know what the relationship is like when they aren’t in our view though. I grew up with my parents telling us to get the heck outa the house and go entertain ourselves outside playing - the “scram!” approach to parenting. But then we always shared family meals in the evening before deciding on what we would watch on the ONE TV we had in the family room or what game we’d play sitting around the kitchen table. I think that entertainment electronics is probably more destructive to family relationships than anything.

I think I would disagree from the standpoint that the electronics, in and of themselves, aren’t bad. It’s just that parents use them as a brain-switcher-offer to get the kids out of their hair for a while, when there are far better options like books or good old-fashioned outdoor play. Careful regulation of computer and idiot box time isn’t all bad; that’s how I developed into an ace programmer.

OTOH,,, I see many kids dropped off at the daycare center at 7(ish) in the morning, are picked up there by the school bus, spend from 08:30-04:00 at school, taken back to the day care center till a parent picks them up at 7(ish) ((or later)) at night, taken home, given a bag of fast food for dinner, then placed in front of a TV or video game till bedtime!

Yeah, that’s the accepted mainstream medical perspective on it.
It’s all kind of fascinating, especially at the molecular level.

I was on this well funded white gold study panel. Among other issues it looked at allergy to white gold via the nickel content. Teen age body piercing often triggers the nickel allergy, the #1 most common metal allergy. The nickel in the piercing stud is the issue. But (this is just weird) if younger females, ie pre-puberty are exposed like that they get nickel allergy resistance, an insensitivity. Almost like a vaccine. Also BTW the lighter the skin the more common the sensitivity. Ethnic Danes were the most effected. Latinos not so much. As you say fascinating on a molecular (and genetic) level

BTW-Nowadays we make white gold with palladium for the nickel allergic.

It is depressing to the mother. In this economy both parents have to work. It was so hard for me to drop my kids off. It was just another layer of guilt. But kids will survive. My mom worked. It was the 1960’s. I resented having to get up during summer vacation and having to go to a sitter when they went to work. I lived through it. I feel so sorry for some of the kids I meet today who have every single minute of their days planned and adult supervised. How awful! They are driven to school even when it’s only a few blocks away and never let out of the front yard for fear of being kidnapped or something. That seems to be a great way to create a generation of paranoid, isolated people who are scared of everything.

EVERY DAY PLANNED out to the second!

Kids need time for play, for daydreaming, for reflection … My daughter had friends who every day had after-school activities until 9 p.m.! We limited her to one after-school activity a year. Just one, she could choose it - dance lessons, girl scouts, whatever. She could pick whatever was most important and interesting to HER, not what was important to US.

I raised 9 kids, and when my oldest was 12 (and before and while the youngest 3 were born) I went back to school to earn my degree and then went out to work full time.

The older kids, who were raised by me as a stay at home mom, and the younger ones, who went to day care while I worked, all turned out OK.

Zedushka had to take the little ones to day care since he started work later than I did, and so he had to deal with getting them out of bed and dressed and fed in the morning.

Wow, just doing the math that looked like 9 kids in 9 years… Mazel Tov… you guys didn’t mess around.

My wife used to nanny for a couple, because both of them worked during the day. She basically saw the baby’s first steps and heard her first words. To me, that would be the most depressing thing ever, knowing that some stranger was more intimate with my kids than I was.

Being a stay at home dad has been quite expensive in many ways but it’s probably one of the most wonderful things I could hope for. To be here every day for him is a real bit of grace in this world.

re: #473 sattv4u2

I’m not disagreeing that there are overprotective parents

What I do take issue with is that a parent should know where there children are

My son (16,, 2 months from 17) goes to his freinds house miles away. If they decide to go to another friends house he’s been asked to call to let us know he’s going from “A” to “B”. Nothing unreasonable about that imho

Nope, wouldn’t disagree with that at all. I was given a neighbourhood bubble, and two fixed times a day I was to be home. Any variation in that required a check in. I’d be asked where I was going when I left the house.

And the parents of our little gang figured out early on that universal rules were the most effective. So EVERYONE had to be home at 6 and 12, we’d all be asked where we were going when we left a house, etc. Took away the peer pressure to break the rules too.

I think the kids raised in homes with working-outside-of-the-home parents can benefit greatly from that arrangement. It teaches responsibility and independence.

My mom worked outside most of my growing up years and I loved those couple of hours after school when I had the house to myself. I played the piano so I could practice and pound away on it all I wanted to without bothering anyone. I could also crank up the volume on the stereo. I learned to cook, too being the primary cook in the household during the weekdays. My mom grieved when I went off to college not cuz of seeing her baby fly the nest but losing her live-in chef!

Couple of factors

Kids ages
What do you consider “late”?

Kids will go to sleep when they are tired.

I always had such a problem putting my kids to bed. There were always the last bedtime story, the last bathroom trips, the last goodnight kiss, then lights out, and then…the fights.

My take is that the root cause isn’t that they didn’t predict, it’s that when asked if the little ones were percursors to a big one they said “No.” They were so insistent that a number of preventive actions weren’t taken, and as a result casualties when the big one happened were a bit largerthan they might have been. I use to babysit for some friends of the family every few weeks, let the parents go out for the evening kind of thing. Kids were probably 8 and 10. I had been doing it for about a year at this point so I was pretty familiar with the bedtime routine. In bed by about 10:30, 11 at my discretion (parents didn’t mind them finishing a movie).

Anyways they were the easiest kids in the world to watch. There was only 1 time they were in any way difficult. It was a friday night, right around 9 o’clock. Simon, the oldest said they had to go to bed. I disagreed. We actually argued about it for about 5 minutes. Eventually I let him win, they both went to bed.

Parents told me the next day he thought it was thursday night, not friday. He REALLY didn’t like his routine being messed with.

And as stated, 8 + hours at that age seems okay to me, at least from my experience

Lets say you try to put them to bed by 9:30/ 10:00

By 7 am thats approaching 10 HOURS ,, too long for active children, imho

Now,,, if they are having a problem getting UP at the appionted hour (7 am) THEN thats an issue, but you didn’t indicate that they are having that problem

Yeah, that’s the thing - is the late bedtime creating a problem?

You can’t make anyone fall asleep, until they’re ready to go to sleep. Putting kids to bed earlier than they need to is just getting them out of the way.

My daughter would sometimes be up late chatting with friends on the phone. But she was always up and ready for school on time the next day, and she did well in school. No problems - so there was nothing to deal with. If she had been falling asleep during the day while in class - problem - would have to have been dealt with.

I was barely 17 when I had my son, I listened when my mother-in-law gave me advice.

So that begs the question as to how old your daughter (or dil) is?

I raised my children with a routine for bedtime. I still think children need a certain amount of sleep at night and young children need naps. Doctors say that people shouldn’t have TV or radio on at night. It disrupts dream patterns.

Just my opinion.

And thats my point

Each child is different. My sons best friend has an older (by 3 years) brother

My son and his best friend function fine on 7-8 hours sleep

His friends brother needs 9+

Same household,, same environment,, different kids!

She’s 28 now, she was 18 when she had her 1st child.

But the “problem” is now, with her at 28

Obama, Israel, trying to head off train wreck at UN in September - the train wreck being the Palestinians’ incessant calls to declare statehood.

“The United Nations does not have the authority to recognize states,” Mitchell said. Recognition of a state, especially if passed by an overwhelming margin at the UN, would be “very harmful for Israel, for the United States, and not good for the peace process.”

The United States has consistently expressed the opinion that bringing the issue of a Palestinian state to the UN is harmful to the peace process with Israel. Despite this, several countries, have already granted recognition to an independent Palestinian state of their own accord.

In a recent meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned against unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, saying “We do not think that unilateral steps are helpful.”

The way the Middle East conflict is going to end, Mitchell said is “by an agreement in which the United States plays an active and substantive role but an agreement that will be owned by, be the property of, and be the result of negotiation by Israelis and Palestinians.”

The envoy also spoke about the recent reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah, saying “obviously we hope that Abbas and the Fatah Party will win the election, not Hamas.”

Mitchell should know better than most that the Palestinians will more than likely vote along the same lines as the last elections held - Hamas wins Gaza and parts of the West Bank, while Fatah wins elsewhere. Hamas would likely repeat its totals, and again throw the “peace process” into turmoil since Hamas refuses to accept Israel’s very existence, which is a necessary condition for any talks between Israel and the Palestinians to be worth more than the paper they’re printed upon.

I think the real problem is the guilt she feels about her children being raised by daycare. The “baby” almost always has a runny nose and half the time they don’t strap him in his car-seat.

They tend to buy the kids everything they want, like they are trying to compensate for something.

It’s all I can do to not worry myself sick. But, they are not my children.

So the issue is much deeper than an 8 or 9 (or whatever you deem correct) hour sleep time. Sorry, but we’re now into the “above my payscale” area

I ran across this and thought some of you might find it interesting.

Most parents underestimate the amount of sleep children should get a day. They need:

Infants: 14 to 15 hours
Toddlers: 12 to 14 hours
Preschoolers: 11 to 13 hours
School-age kids: 10 to 11 hours
Teenagers: 9 to 10 hours

I wonder how many Tea Partiers would support torturing people who try to kill abortion doctors. After all, if we torture them, we might get useful information! We might prevent a catastrophe! So why not round up these people who target abortion doctors? Could it be because they’re white and Christian? I’m being rather blunt here, but if we torture some Muslim because he might have info about Al Queda, why not also torture some white supremacist in Idaho who might have info about the Aryan Brotherhood?
