Amazon’s Cloud Player

A cloud of music
Technology • Views: 53,049

External Image as a way to have access to my music library from any location, and so far I like it a lot. There’s an Android app available free from Amazon; hopefully, an iPhone app will appear soon as well. Right now, Mac/iPhone/iPad users can only play music through a web browser interface, but it still works very well even over a 3G connection with an iPhone.

All Amazon customers have immediate access to 5GB of cloud storage, useable for music or other files. But there’s a very cool promotion now going on that gives you a free 1-year upgrade to 20GBExternal Image

A very nice touch is that any music you purchase at Amazon is automatically stored in the cloud, and doesn’t count toward your usage. And you can download it again at any time, just as you can with books purchased for the Amazon Kindle.

re: #2 wlewisiii

the thing that got me to convert was I got a bunch of songs from amazon mp3, and then got a nice OS failure and had to format my HD.

The nice thing about amazon cloud player is htat you can download the songs any time. I use it as a backup for disks/downloads I Lose :D

True enough, but a mirror set, especially at >2 devices, does the trick most of the time. And no media changing LOL.

I am kind of surprised they're as free as they are about letting you download from anywhere, seems like the RIAA would hate that... but maybe its small-potatoes and inconvenient compared to torrent priacy.

My guess is they simply haven't noticed. They're insane enough to sue both Amazon and Google over this because their whole biz plan is based on the idea of "If you can't innovate, litigate". I'd say about 6 more months before they sue simply based on how clueless they tend to be. What happens then is anyone's guess but at least it'll probably take a decade to work it's way to the SCUSA and by then, who knows?

Mind too tired, too old. Need to figure out what a cloud is. (Other than the suspension of water droplets in the atmosphere.)

A 'cloud" is a fancy derivative term for a place to store your files online, no worries about your 'puter' being stolen, a fire, a hard drive that suddenly starts going clickity, clickity...

You have backed up all your files to the "Cloud" which just to be safe usually means that your files are stored in at least three separate drives (possibly in three separate locations) so that they are indeed permanent and can never be lost to misfortune.

In addition the tablet and portable PC market are aggressively hyping the "cloud" because that means that they would be able to completely take the place of your desktop even though they only have 1/10th the drive storage space. They want you to store all your files on the "cloud" and not on the device in your hands.

Last I read Amazon and Google were both spending billions at breakneck speed on setting up "cloud" servers as the 'next big thing.' Amazon was slightly ahead as the largest system according to the last report I read. If you recall both Pirate Bay and Wikileaks tried to host their files on Amazons "cloud" when the courts were trying to shut them down locally.

This.

A LOT of my music started on vinyl, was converted to CD, then converted again to electronic format and set so I can load on a player or stream it within the house. I'm not an audiophile, I'm old enough that the only format choices were vinyl or reel, then 8-track, then cassette. Digital was a god-send. Due to delightful experiences in life (/sarcasm) I've lost many of the original vinyl.

I really don't want the hassle of the RIAA telling me my collection isn't mine.

re: #28 ausador

Of course there are some major privacy concerns about all of this, especially with Google which as usual wants to use your data to target ads and such at you but swears that it will keep the actual contents of your stored files confidential

31 jerk  Fri, May 27, 2011 3:59:38pm

I'm sure it works fine, but I don't think it will ever have a capacity to hold my own music library. Here's what I did: I set up a remote server using a USB hard drive connected to my Time Capsule through MobileMe (server setup). I connect to the server drive holding my music and the files appear in the Finder as if it was just a run-of-the-mill external USB drive. From there, I use Songbird to view my iTunes library file, and it imports everything as I left it on my main computer. So, with a little lag, I have all my music accessible virtually anywhere.

Working at McMurdo requires a pysch eval first, or at least it always used to. Being sealed up inside the base for seven months is a mental stressor they want to make sure you can handle. Very few females (already spoken for) and a lot of guys cooped up, well you get the picture.

The scientist types get to go outside sometimes even in the dead of winter to make sure the rest of the world is still actually there, you will not be allowed to. Communications are somewhat better now but you will still lose them for days at a time sometimes when enough driving snow occludes the dish signal.

If you do go you should buy at least four pairs of poly/wool blend longjohns (longsleeve tops and bottoms) a neoprene face mask "gator mask," ski goggles, and a neck muffler beforehand, you will be very glad you did.

Not saying it is a bad place to earn a buck, just...very, very different.

The White House said Mr. Obama reviewed and approved the bill before authorizing the use of the autopen. The White House also highlighted the fact that the White House Office of Legal Counsel in 2005 determined that the use of the autopen was constitutional.

Still, Graves wrote to the president to request confirmation that he reviewed the legislation before the autopen signing, as well as "a detailed, written explanation of your Constitutional authority to assign a surrogate the responsibility of signing bills passed by Congress into law."

In an additional statement today explaining the letter, Graves said the use of the autopen could set a "dangerous precedent."

re: #89 Stanley Sea

Yeah, modernity.

The President's use of email, telephones and motorized conveyances are also suspect.

Yeah, modernity.

Not so much.

The first autopens were developed by an Englishman named John Isaac Hawkins. Hawkins received a United States patent for his device in 1803.[citation needed] In 1804, Thomas Jefferson began using the device extensively.

The whole country is based on dangerous precedent!!1!!

As online storage goes, the Amazon cloud drive thingy is overpriced.

As a benefit to the people purchasing mp3 albums at Amazon, it's completely awesome. My one (remaining) paranoia about buying music online was the download going bad and needing to beg (or more likely repurchase from) the vendor for my goods. With cloud drive, you just download it as many times, as many places as you want. And streaming my albums to my desk at work is just awesome.

(+2ish, so I may be a little less than objective right now.)

A new nontroversy

Congressman questions Patriot Act "autopen" signature

Of course, because each and every piece of legislation must wait to be signed until the president is physically present with it in the oval office. Never mind that we now spend billions of dollars per week via electronic signatures...the president (well, at least this president) needs to be held to a higher standard, we cannot allow this Ni**er to pass legislation without his actual signature!

Sure we let the last six or seven presidents do it and never ever complained before, but they were honest white men they were not Ni**ers you damn fools!

Just got an email from the executive chef in regards to my possibly going to Antarctica. I have to fill out a questionnaire and schedule a phone interview. The email says the phone interview will last about an hour. WOOT!!!

Just a little tip:

If you're outside and you see a strange dog running in your direction, with a couple of crazed Norwegian dudes right behind shouting at you, shoot the dog, not the dudes.

Printers, pens, typewriters and factory processed paper are also suspect. All official documents must be on hand made papyrus using quills, transcribed by Monks and properly distributed via the use of Town Criers.

OT, that sixteen-year-old girl who challenged History Professor Bachmann to a debate is on O'Donnell's show in about three minutes on MSNBC.

Just wait until Comcast et. al. start metered usage/tiered usage. Then what was once paid for once will end up being paid for over and over and over again....
