GOP Rep. Rohrabacher Doesn’t Believe in Climate Change, But Wants to Clear the Rainforests Anyway

Pathetically ignorant Republican anti-science snake oil
Environment • Views: 56,019

DERPIn a congressional hearing this week titled “UN Climate Talks and Power Politics — It’s Not About the Temperature,” Rep. Dana Rohrabacher came up with one of the more bizarre right wing climate change denial fantasies in recent memory; Rohrabacher says scientists need to start addressing the greenhouse gases emitted by rotting vegetation.

Rohrabacher does not believe in human-caused climate change, but he has a solution ready to go — clear out those dangerous rainforests and cut down all those old trees.

The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs oversight subcommittee made it clear during a Wednesday hearing that he doesn’t believe in man-made global warming.

But if it were true — and most of the world’s scientists agree it is — Rohrabacher said he’s hit on an answer by tackling the 80 to 90 percent of heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions “generated by nature itself”: Namely, yank down old trees and get rid of the rotting wood in rainforests.

“Is there some thought being given to subsidizing the clearing of rainforests in order for some countries to eliminate that production of greenhouse gases?” the California Republican asked Todd Stern, the top U.S. climate diplomat and lead witness at the hearing. “Or would people be supportive of cutting down older trees in order to plant younger trees as a means to prevent this disaster from happening?”

Good grief, people. How did we end up in a situation where one of the two major political parties is wandering blind in La La Land, brushing aside the opinions of qualified scientists to blurt out such reprehensible and stupid bullshit?

The really sick and twisted part of it is that Rohrabacher doesn’t even believe in global warming! He’s not suggesting cutting down the world’s rainforests as a legitimate idea. He’s just sticking a thumb in the scientists’ eyes.

Because, you commie librul. Real Americans know that so-called climate change is a vast konspiracy between tens of thousands of so-called scientists intent on bringing America to her knees by ending capitalism.

Notice that he doesn't even believe in global warming -- so asking this question serves no purpose whatsoever except to fuck with the climate scientists. He's proposing it as a "solution" to a problem he doesn't believe exists.

What a total creep.

These are the consequences of letting religious fanaticism and magical thinking take over. The GOP has spent so long pandering to the ignorant and the delusional and now we're stuck with idiots like Rohrabacher saying that clearing the rainforests will stop global warming.

Hey, whaddayaknow!

Rohrabacher served as assistant press secretary to the 1976 and 1980 presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan.[1] From 1981 to 1988, he was one of President Reagan's senior speech writers. During his tenure at the White House, Rohrabacher played a leading role in the formulation of the Reagan Doctrine.

40 dragonfire1981  Fri, May 27, 2011 5:53:05pm

I may flesh this out a bit and page it later but I believe I've found an effective way to maybe convince some people to take action on climate change who otherwise would not.

First, throw out the part where you convince them that man made global warming is occurring (I know this sounds odd but stay with me). Instead try to get them to the point where they realize two basic and important things.

1. Climate change, regardless of cause, IS occurring and having significant effects on our planet.
2. We CAN and should do things to help!

I have a friend who I lost the battle with long ago in trying to convince him that global warming is being caused by man but I have managed to bring him around to the idea that climate change is indeed happening and there are things he can do to help, regardless of his religious beliefs.

I admit this is a simple approach, but sometimes those work the best.

Although it feels validating to think that, I don't think the GOP is full of morans, morons, or maroons, for that matter. I think they are so steeped in anti-intellectualism, common sense worship and driving by the seat of their pants, anything that looks like it validates their biases, no matter how ridiculous it looks to someone in the know, they'll accept it as a given. Tell them they are wrong, or worse, show them they are wrong and they hunker down in their belief and assume your motives are the real problem.

I've had the account for several months, finally getting around to using it. There are a few test posts there.

Facebook's software is amazingly obtuse, for such a popular website.

Account -> Privacy Settings -> Connecting on Facebook -> "See your Friend List"

(the worst thing about Facebook Settings are, just when you think you finally figured out where everything is, they go and change it all up again, just to mess with your head)

From Wiki:

Dana Rohrabacher voiced support for the Taliban when they seized power in the 1990s, visiting Afghanistan when it came under their control, saying that the Taliban would provide "stability", and eliminate threats to the United States. He also claimed the Taliban "intend to establish a disciplined, moral society". He said he believed complete Taliban control over Afghanistan would be a "positive development", that they were "devout traditionalists, not terrorists or revolutionaries", and that "sensationalist" media coverage of the Taliban's introduction of Sharia law was "nonsense".

Not to be outdone by Rep. Rohrabacher, Rep.Bachmann's plan involves plowing, salting, and then paving over with petroleum based asphalt all arable lands within the United states. "Either we will make God come and save us or we will all die of starvation!!! Rep. Bachmann screeched before collapsing convulsively onto the ground and lapsing into random grunting noises. Hey, folks ~~

At the risk of spoiling the party, the "misinterpreted lyrics" thing is called a "mondegreen."

I've never mentioned this here before, but for the past several years, I've written a weekly trivia quiz at a local pub in beautiful downtown Herndon, Virginia. One of our most popular "recurring" trivia sheets has been our Mondegreens sheet, which has sometimes been called "Mondegreens" and sometimes "Hold Me Closer, Tony Danza." Here's a few shining examples of Mondegreens that our customers really liked or really hated. I'll let you guys decide which was which.

Please note that I swiped these from numerous sites, so blame the writers, not the thief, okay?

"Dirty deeds, done to sheep." -- AC/DC

"Do a little dance, make a little rum, Italian ice! Italian ice! -- K.C. & The Sunshine Band

"No Dukes of Hazzard in the classroom..." -- Pink Floyd

"She's got a tick in her eye..." -- The Beatles

"Cause I'm as free as a turd, now, and this turd juice cannot change." -- Lynyrd Skynyrd

"There's a skeleton choking on a cross bow head..." -- The Police

"Bake me a pie of love." -- Steve Winwood

"Bring me an iron lung." -- Steve Winwood

"Some day, buddy, some day..." -- U2

"You made the rice, I made the gravy..." -- Billy Joel

"I've got the runs like a rolling bolt of thunder..." -- Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons

Sounds like good fun. I have a dorky kind of love for that sort of thing, I didn't know it had a name.

I used to have a girlfriend that would sing the following lyrics of a TOOL song as:

"I can say what I want to, even if I'm not serious"
"People tell me what to say, is that the game you want to play"

The actual lyrics are:

"I can't say what I want to, even if I'm not serious"
"People tell me what to say, what to think and what to play"

I would just quietly snicker at her.

I was sitting in my pottery class at college. The teacher put on a tape as we were throwing pots. About three songs in, I turned to the teacher and said, "One of them sounds a lot like Tom Petty." (At that point I owned all of Petty's albums.)

"Yes," he said, "and one of them sounds like George Harrison, and one of them sounds like Roy Orbison, and one of them sounds like Jeff Lynne, and one of them sounds like Bob Dylan."

The really sad part is that my college is a pretty un-hip place, and I think that the two of us were the only two that understood what he was saying.

I was living in Massachusetts in 1988, and a buddy of mine decided to come down for a visit. When we talked he said "see if you can find something to do."

The night he got there Roy Orbison was playing at the Channel. I tried to talk him into it, but he saw Orbison as a relic, and he had worked all day, and he had just drove four hours all the way from Maine, and blah blah blah.

So instead we sat around the apartment shooting the shit, drinking beer and stuffing our faces from Legal Seafood.

Research proves me wrong. It turns out Orbison's last show was in Ohio, so we must have had the "second to the last show" or "third to the last show" option.

I saw Tom Petty in Miami, probably in the late 80s, maybe early 90s. The show was great but the thing I remember... we had parked downtown and taken the Miami Metromover to the old Miami Arena (now torn down). Anyway, Petty didn't sing American Girl and in the train car on the ride back, everyone was commenting about it. The car was packed, like 30 people. All of a sudden one guy goes, "Well, she was an American girl." And another guy goes, "Raised on promises." And pretty soon, the entire car was singing and dancing and grooving and what not. It was super cool.

It was super cool.

yeah, crazy stuff happens in a supercharged environment like that...I have a bunch of my own lies to spread, hahaha!...chasing down good music was my whole existence for decades

290 funky chicken  Fri, May 27, 2011 9:48:56pm
For Cargill, a Minnesota-based food conglomerate, the greatest urgency lies in getting soybeans to market as cheaply as possible. Anticipating the eventual completion of BR-163, Cargill opened a warehouse and deepwater port in Santarém in 2003. Until it can transport soy beans there by road, Cargill, like Maggi, has been moving much of it by barge via the Madeira River. "We've exported close to two million tons [1.8 million metric tons]," Douglas Odoni, the plant's operation manager, told me with pride. We stood on a catwalk above the Cypriot-flagged freighter Evdoxos as a giant nozzle disgorged soybeans into the vessels belly at the rate of 1,350 tons (1,220 metric tons) an hour. Within two weeks, the Evdoxos would dock in Amsterdam and unload 52,000 tons (47,000 metric tons) of Brazilian soybeans at a crush plant that makes oil and animal feed. "They buy only from us," Odoni yelled above the din of the machinery.

Cargill's operations in the Amazon have been controversial from the start. Federal prosecutors are suing the company over its alleged failure to provide an adequate environmental impact study of the port. Cargill's installation of a soybean washer and dryer has infuriated forest defenders, whose protests have repeatedly closed down the plant. To avoid spoilage, soybeans must be cleaned before they are transported, and for farmers around Santarém, it was only after the arrival of the washer and dryer that they had an incentive to grow it. Deforestation in the area has soared. "Maybe it's true that if Cargill weren't here, they wouldn't plant soy," Odoni conceded. But "if they couldn't sell soybeans to us, there would be no taxes and revenues for the local community."

Last summer, Cargill and Brazil's other big soy traders agreed to a two-year moratorium on buying soy grown on newly deforested land in the Amazon. The agreement is sending a signal to soy producers that the environmental impact of their operations is increasingly important in the world marketplace.

For many in the community of Belterra, an hour's drive south of Santarém, the moratorium comes too late. As the head of the Rural Workers Union local, Auricelia Núnes, 33, represents some 5,000 farming families. These people, she said, had been coaxing a decent living from their small plots, when, in the late 1990s, outsiders from southern Brazil began buying up property at a pittance. "There are many small farmers who don't know the value of money," Núnes said. "They thought the money would last, but it doesn't." Now they languish in Santarém's growing slums.

Those who refused to sell found themselves encircled by an encroaching wasteland, as whining chain saws and raging fires consumed the trees right up to the edge of their land. Their yards were overrun with vipers, bees, and rodents escaping the apocalypse, and when tractors began spraying the cleared fields, toxic clouds of pesticides drifted into their homes. "Their health was in jeopardy," Núnes said. "Many started getting sick. Their animals started dying."

Well of course he's a fool. Anyone with half a brain knows that carbon dioxide is plant food, and the more CO2 we can pump into the atmosphere the better off we all are. Hell, I hear tell that it can save us from skin cancer.

How about if we just pour lots of super-glue into volcanoes to prevent eruptions?

Soybeans, as is the nature of legumes, has more lysine than many plant foods. Thus for the vegetarian/vegan soybeans are quite useful. Since lysine is essential for vertebrates, using soybeans as filler (as opposed to other easy to grow plants like the grasses) is preferred.

Assuming we want filler, that is.

I posted my last in somewhat.. No a stupid manner'
I don't give a rats ass about where someone stands about how man, may or may not impact warming. Warming is scientifically proven.
If we cannot agree that we have impacted that in some way the we may as well state that we humans have not improved our systems of: treatment of crap in sewer systems over the ages; eliminating and or reducing the impact of disease; realizing that the air that was floating over cities was much more toxic than today. That we have reduced man caused disease based on tobacco, increased the alcholohism in indigenous people. (Maybe the most dangerous of this planets dwellers is modern man western style), increased lung cancer may have kept us in check...
But no, we have impacted this oasis in much more harmful ways.. Progress. Did we not have a major impact on Japan..kilometer sized ones..twice. We did some major damage to a city in India, a while back with one of our 'Multinatioals right?

Heh, me too. If I had the money I'd move to NorCal and buy a large farm and do some permaculture focusing on tree crops. But farmland in California can cost more than in Iowa and I don't think I could make it turn a profit in anything less than 10 years.

Yeah, I think they're pretty fucking evil.

Old news is still fucked up, Monsanto Canada v. Schmeiser:

As established in the original Federal Court trial decision, Schmeiser first discovered Roundup-resistant canola in his crops in 1997.[2] He had used Roundup herbicide to clear weeds around power poles and in ditches adjacent to a public road running beside one of his fields, and noticed that some of the canola which had been sprayed had survived. Schmeiser then performed a test by applying Roundup to an additional 3 acres (12,000 m2) to 4 acres (16,000 m2) of the same field. He found that 60% of the canola plants survived. At harvest time, Schmeiser instructed a farmhand to harvest the test field. That seed was stored separately from the rest of the harvest, and used the next year to seed approximately 1,000 acres (4 km²) of canola.

At the time, Roundup Ready canola was in use by several farmers in the area. Schmeiser claimed that he did not plant the initial Roundup Ready canola, and that his field of custom-bred canola had been accidentally contaminated. Possibly routes of this gene flow include seed which escaped from passing trucks containing Roundup Ready harvests, or natural, accidental pollination. Monsanto initially claimed that Schmeiser planted Roundup Ready Canola in his fields intentionally, though they could offer no evidence for this. The company later admitted that it was possible for unintentional gene flow to have resulted in the initial presence of Roundup Ready Canola in Schmeiser's field. While the origin of the plants on Schmeiser's farm remains unclear, the trial judge found that "none of the suggested sources [proposed by Schmeiser] could reasonably explain the concentration or extent of Roundup Ready canola of a commercial quality" ultimately present in Schmeiser's crop.[3]

To hear some people talk, steak isn't done "right" unless it's as tender as a slab of Jello and can be slurped through a straw. I'll take the chewy, bubblegum consistency over that any time.

My former in-laws were like that. Loved their meat so "tender" it was damn near liquid. The closest I ever came to vomiting in public was one time when we all went out to some restaurant and they ordered oysters. On one hand, if you spend that much money, manpower and research on something, you ought to reap some kind of benefit.

The research was specifically done towards the end of creating seeds that do not reproduce. That's the entire reason they sue farmers who save the previous years' leftover seeds: so they don't have to buy a new batch next season.

The thing I do ain't new. It's an old school Mexican thang, but it was new to me a few years ago.

Soaked in cold water for at least an hour, husks on.

Grilled for a bit with husks covering, then at the last bit with husks peeled back.

Brushed with a mixture of mayo, butter, and lime juice, then dusted with chili powder and parmesan.

Y'all can eat all the pie, cake, and ice cream you want. I'll take an ear of that for my desert, thank you very much.

What can I say? I'm not really hip to the whole topic.

I figure if you invest a certain amount of research, money, and man hours into something, you ought to get some kind of benefit out of it.

But as I say, I am not hip to the topic. If you have sources or links that could educate me on the whole thing, I'll be happy to digest them when I'm more sober. And if you dig me, you'll dig that I would prefer sources that are entirely non-partisan in the political sense. I'm not fond of political taint on such subjects, even if they look to confirm my own political biases.

This is not some kind of challenge, where I dare you prove anything. I'm just curious. If you don't have the time, well I'll just pick it when I'm not fuxored. If I remember to do so.

So, I'm watching a video about ancient Greece... and it's flavored with some historical revisionism (mostly through overstatements or glossing over facts.) I hate it when that happens in documentaries that otherwise have some value. It's production was funded in part by a wealthy Greek-American, and the main speaker is a contemporary Greek archeologist.... anyway, I guess the take-away lesson is that objective analysis of a culture needs, if it is to be accomplished, an outsider to be a key player.

"Soil" includes dead plant material, yes. It becomes food for other living things, from fungi and bacteria to the worms.

As for deforestation causing desertification... there are cases to be made that human deforestation of SW Asia led to increased aridification, but that was probably also underway as the climate slowly warmed at the beginning of the Holocene.

Clearing of shrubs and native grasses, followed by plowing, is directly indicted in the American experience in the midwest and great plains that led to the dust bowl.

And so on.

And yes, it is feared that clearing the Amazon is leading to large portions of Brazil turning into a hot savannah that will be arid when lacking monsoon rains. Some studies have indicated that about 18% of the Amazon has already been lost. Very recently parts of the Brazilian government has been proposing allowing for some more clearing, supported by, of all things, the local Communist Party.

Not so much ugly, but rather abandoned. Well, some of the locations. I remember going to a play in downtown and having dinner first. When we left the restaurant to go to the Music Center, Down Town was like a ghost town. Now it is alive.

An excellent lampoon of ole time gospel.

This is the Real Thing:

And has the added benefit of being musically interesting, in that you don't hear perfect-fifth harmony in bluegrass vocals very often.

Crazy persons might be entertained by the tangentially-relevant knowledge that in the earliest days of polyphonic music (think something similar to Gregorian chants), any interval other than a perfect-fifth was considered "unholy". A flatted-fifth was thought to be likely to invoke the devil.

Note that the people who thought that up were the same geniuses who thought it was completely normal and in keeping with reality to torture women until they 'confessed' to having sex with the devil and cursing the crops to fail and half the town's babies to die of dysentery. The ones who confessed would go to Heaven after they were burned alive, and the ones who didn't confess would go to Hell.

Well, it's like this..

Gawd, seeing that Adam was lonely, being unique among his kind, came to him and said...

I will create for you a counterpart, a female to match your male. She (that's right, We calll it a "She") will be beautiful beyond comparison. She will be intelligent, compassionate, and artistic. She will be loving, caring, and nurturing. She will be perfect in every way.

Adam, though having been born Yesterday, was not entirely stupid. He asked "For all this, I know there must be some kind of 'catch'. What is it"?

Gawd replied "It will cost you an arm and a leg".

To which Adam responded "Okay, what can I get for a rib"?

499 Sol Berdinowitz  Sat, May 28, 2011 2:09:34am

America did offer the chance to people who wanted to live on their own land to have the chance to do so: that option had expired in Europe long before.

But how many Americans could phsically inhabit their own 40 acres with a mule and a well, even if they chose to do so?

The problem with your thinking is this:

You understand how human reproduction works.

Try and think back to when you were 11, 12, 13 years old. You and/or your friends probably had some really bizarre, stupid, and dangerous ideas about sex.

(SIDE NOTE: If you object to the very idea of 11, 12, and 13 year-olds formulating ideas about sex, you're denying reality and thereby perpetuating the problem)

I remember from that age all sorts of ridiculously incorrect information being passed around among my peers. A girl can't get pregnant if it's her 'first time', to cite only one example. Hesitantly accepted, anxiety-ridden reassurances that you can't get pregnant from kissing. Lots and lots of kids genuinely have no idea how pregnancy occurs. And lots and lots of adults make it their life's work to shield kids from any and all information about the subject (while simultaneously being more promiscuous than any 1970s disco cliche could ever hope to be).

But I also think that they need to be given the all information they need to make responsible decisions.

Word. I went through a rough spot, more than once. Mostly of my own making. Sometimes not. I'm grateful it all happened when I was younger and more, "rugged".

But I had no inclination to lash out against society. Much of my tough spots were of my own fuck ups. Not all of them, but most of them.

I can't imagine how much harder it would have been to pick myself up and "have at it" again if I had some kind of schizophrenic disorder.

511 freetoken  Sat, May 28, 2011 2:42:04am

The Esther is Facebooking again.

This time she takes (as has become common in the very recent past among tea partiers) to quoting the Continental Congress' draft petition to the throne in England. The famous phrase "we were born the heirs of freedom," but takes it totally out of context, of course. The Esther says:

We'll celebrate the meaning of our nation's blueprints, our Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, which are the threads that weave our past into the fabric necessary for the survival of American exceptionalism. Our founders declared "we were born the heirs of freedom," and despite our difficulties and disagreements, we remain one nation under God in freedom, indivisible. Through visits to historical sites and patriotic events, we'll share the importance of America's foundation.

Here's the whole paragraph (the drafting of which is sometimes attributed to John Jay, and sometimes to John Adams), which is part of a letter to be sent to George III:

Had our creator been pleased to give us existence in a land of slavery, the sense of our condition might have been mitigated by ignorance and habit. But thanks be to his adorable goodness, we were born the heirs of freedom, and ever enjoyed our right under the auspices of your royal ancestors, whose family was seated on the British throne, to rescue and secure a pious and gallant nation from the popery and despotism of a superstitious and inexorable tyrant. Your majesty, we are confident, justly rejoices, that your title to the crown is thus founded on the title of your people to liberty; and therefore we doubt not, but your royal wisdom must approve the sensibility, that teaches your subjects anxiously to guard the blessings, they received from divine providence, and thereby to prove the performance of that compact, which elevated the illustrious house of Brunswick to the imperial dignity it now possesses.

So, the Continental Congress was buttering up good ol' King George III, saying in essence how wonderful of a heritage it was to be part of the English crown system and that they were free while serving under George's predecessors.

Maybe The Esther wants to raise the issue of "popery"??

Sarah Palin is just plain stupid. Maliciously stupid.

One thing I will say for Bachmann - she makes for a more coherent interviewee than Palin (who just comes off sound ignorant yet folksy.) Bachmann is actually a better politician than Palin, having placed herself in a congressional district where she can be re-elected, as opposed to The Esther who probably can't be elected to any office ever again.

It's funny; some of the foods I ate when I was poor I can't even stand the smell of anymore. But others have turned into comfort food. Like onions; I used to live near a farmers market in the Tenderloin and bought and ate tons of onions. They're not that calorie-laden, but they're really nutritious and very filling. Now they've become the staple of my diet. I make a base of onions for most dishes I eat.

No, she doesn't. That particular facebook entry is just a mashing together of words found on various tea party sites.

I'm not sure. I had read earlier that they were going to allow Israeli and UN some power to screen passengers but I'm not sure if that agreement is still in effect. I sort of doubt it will help much with weapons smuggling because they can already get anything they want through the tunnels. Even with the crossing open it's still safer to bring in weapons through the tunnels rather than the crossing.

Part of the purpose of closing the crossing was an attempt to undermine support for Hamas among the people of Gaza. It didn't work. Since the strip is ruled by a terrorist organization the opening will assist terrorism. It's also very dangerous if Egypt starts allowing weapons shipments through. It's the kind of thing that could lead to another war.

Well, since any potential Palestinian state would feature an open border crossing with Egypt anyway, and said crossing was open until 4 years ago, and any Terrorists can just smuggle in weapons in through dozens of tunnels under the Gaza/Egypt border anyway....

...Me thinks its more useful to think of this in the context of the recent uprising in Egypt and the transitional Governments more populist attitude. In other words, do to the Egyptian publics feelings, this border crossing will never be closed again, baring a regional war. Meaning, we have to get over it, now and deal with it as a reality and as a potential opportunity rather than as a threat.

DIdn't say it would be easy, be we don't really have a choice.

Seriously, this is only the first step in getting Gazians into thinking more like their more enlightened country-folk in the west bank who actually seem to be attempting to build something useful instead of rockets and bombs. That is the best way to get Palestinians out of this terrorist mentality that involves throwing Israel into the sea; making enough wealth to make war unfathomable for their children.

Speaking of tossed salads, Sarah Palin announced (online) that she was going to be a guest at Rolling Thunder...only she didn't tell them and they have no interest in having her speak.

One day after Sarah Palin announced her bus tour, a group sponsoring a Memorial Day weekend event she plans to attend said they never invited her.

"She wasn't invited. We heard yesterday she came out with a press release she was coming to Rolling Thunder," Ted Shpak, national legislative director of Rolling Thunder, told "Andrea Mitchell Reports." Shpak is one of three members of Rolling Thunder's current leadership who says he had no idea Palin was coming until it was posted on her website.

Apparently, she had one of those verbal "standing invitations" from a former Rolling Thunder organizer, and like the old high school friend you see at a grocery store who shows up with his entire family after you casually say "we should get together sometime", she's cashing in her marker.

DePaulo says he has a permit for the Palin bus to be parked on Henry Bacon Drive near the Lincoln Memorial. He acknowledges he didnt tell current leaders of the organization that she was coming, since they were already on the road.

When asked if Palin's bus will be participating in the event, Shpak of Rolling Thunder Inc. responded, "Absolutely not."

What I learned in Joplin

That's better than reading the finished-product news story.

From your link:

I’m aware that what I’m going to say next will probably sound petty, given the scope of the tragedy I was witnessing. But the lack of cell service was an all-consuming problem. Rescue workers and survivors struggled with it just as I did.

What I learned: It’s easy to scoff at the suggestion that satisfactory cell service is a matter of national security and necessity. But I won’t scoff anymore. If I were planning a newsroom’s response to emergencies, I would buy those backpacks that have six or eight wireless cards in them, all connected to different cell tower operators, thereby upping the chances of finding a signal at any given time.

That's a major chronic problem along the Mexican border. A border security measure was recently introduced in honor of Giffords, and all it asked for was improved cell phone service.

(He can respond reliably when mom tells him to 'Find the letter C' or "Find he letter U' on his alphabet wall. If he learns F and K next, I'm toast.

Sounds like you and he will be giving his mother grief for many years to come.

I wonder if people die from that very often.

Oops. Mrs Deb says he was born last Aug, not Oct. That's within the male margin-of-error for birthdays and anniversaries.

How old?

The child should be kept away from you.

Here is the profile of Scott-Heron from The New Yorker last year detailing his long, harrowing decline. No, he was never massively popular. However, he was among the first artists signed to Arista by Clive Davis and recorded a number of brilliant albums, especially between 1971 and 1978. He also appeared on Saturday Night Live back in the day too.

OK, not quite as extremely precocious as I thought. Still, he counts among the scary-smart kids.

Scott-Heron was on crack? That is very sad.

Well I went out last night to Karaoke. These people in Oklahoma are just so damn friendly.. My mom always told me I have never met a stranger..But I think this group had me beat. I am very impressed..Now I have a bunch of new cell numbers in my phone..
We closed the place down shaking hands and hugging each other..
Fun fun fun
