Egypt-Gaza border opening leaves Palestinians disappointed

By dusk, just 400 Palestinians had crossed into Egypt, and another 30 were turned back because their names appeared on a security "blacklist," according to a senior Egyptian border officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to make public statements. About 150 Palestinians returned to Gaza from Egypt.

The numbers weren't much different from a normal day when the crossing was open, sporadically, under Mubarak's rule. And despite the council's announcement that the border would receive travelers from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., local officers said they didn't have the manpower to keep the station open past 5 p.m.

To many Palestinians familiar with the crossing, it was business as usual: long waits, uncertain chances of passage, and condescending Egyptian guards. They dismissed the military council's announcement as little more than propaganda to convince detractors that the Mubarak era was over.

It'll be interesting to see how this pan out but today I was thinking about the Sinai bombings. Some seem to think the freedom and democracy bug will flow from Egypt into Gaza but it doesn't take much for the Jew/Infidel terrorism thing to flow the other way. I suspect the temptation will eventually be too much for Gaza terrorists to resist.

Gday,

Without someone having the same version of windows, with the same updates installed, and the same version of chrome it would be often dfficult to duplicate your issue.

You could try this.

Log out of LGF
Then click the spanner icon near top right.
Select preferences.
When the window opens, choose the 'Under the hood' Tab.
Then choose the 'Clear browsing data' button.

On the window that opens, make sure 'Clear saved passwords' and 'Clear saved auto form data', are not ticked.

Then click 'Clear browsing data.
Then click close.

Come back to LGF and log back in.

You could copy and paste these instructions into 'notepad' if you wish.

Click the 'windows menu button', in the command line at the bottom type 'notepad', click run.

I hope this helps...

Sarah Palin 'Not Invited' to Veterans' Motorcycle Run

Sarah Palin’s One Nation bus tour is apparently kicking off with a backfire.

Responding to what he said was a press release announcing Sarah Palin would visit the annual “Rolling Thunder” veterans’ bike run in Washington, D.C., as part of her bus tour along the East Coast, a spokesman for the group says she was never invited.

“This is not a political event—maybe she’s coming because she knows we have half a million people in town,” Ted Shpak, legislative director for Rolling Thunder, told MSNBC. “The way it came out she’s saying we endorsed her. We’re not endorsing anybody, and she’s not speaking on our stage during our program.”

I'm reading the Corona reviews now.

A: Adjunct lager clear. Not quite dehydrated urine in color but you should really drink some water if your waste looks like this.

S: Skunky. Sour... I have to add a lime... Ah. There it is. Citrusy and still somehow skunky.

T: I added a lime to kill the natural skunk.

M: Crisp. Nothing to think about except for the pee finish. Refreshing if I am on the beach and need to wash saltwater out of my mouth. However, I am not and I just paid $9 for six of this?

O: A market built around selling skunk beer to the US. Mexicans don't even drink this crap. I will quote a typical beer store customer in the south: "I need a case of MGD and a case of Corona because it is the best beer ever." Nuff said.

A comment on Corona Light from the BA site...

My theory on how Corona is made...many agree with me: 10000 Mexicans each drink a bottle of cheap tequila and then pee into a large vat. Then the contents of the vat are bottled up and shipped to your local dive bar!

17 Year Old to Michele Bachmann: Show Me Your Nobel Laureate Scientists

I’m a 17 year old from Louisiana, and I’m calling Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s bluff when it comes to creationism and Nobel Laureate scientists.

In 2004, while she was in the Minnesota State Senate, Congresswoman Bachmann tried to pass SF 1714, a bill similar to my state’s creationism law, the Louisiana Science Education Act (LSEA), which I’m fighting to repeal. This misnamed and misguided law creates a way to sneak the teaching of creationism into Louisiana public school science classrooms.
---
Congresswoman Bachmann, you claim that Nobel Laureates support creationism. Show me your hand. If you want to be taken seriously by voters while you run for President, back up your claims with facts. Can you match 43 Nobel Laureates, or do you fold?

Yeah. It'll jump from being too cold (IMO) to being too hot in no time. Right now it's too forking cold outside. Mostly because of the damn humidity around here. But, like I've said before unless something pops up around here that's irresistible ($$) I'm eventually going to head back to Denver.

One of the most disturbing and interesting the development is the establishment of the Egyptian Nazi party. Holy shit is that weird!

What is weirder is that I managed to find a defender, amongst the group of egyptian liberals of a very messed up type!

So this one defender's point was that facism is the only way to deal with the egyptian people, & that democracy is waste of time!

I think some of the "Liberals" in Egypt need to be redefined.

"Federalism" implies the existence of self-identified sub-units that are united. As far as I know (and somebody could educate me here) Egypt hasn't been divided into different sub-states since the days of the lower/upper divisions of the Nile.

re: #168 ProLifeLiberal

re: #166 Dark_Falcon

I have no doubt that there are Egyptians who think of themselves as superior to those who live in the rest of Africa. However, there are so many immigrants in Egypt, and the Nile depends wholly on water from East Africa, and Egypt trades with Africa, etc., etc. It just couldn't last long, I think.

171 ProGunLiberal  Sat, May 28, 2011 8:47:15pm

Didn't see anything on Federalism. Might be interesting, but would ultimately be more useful in heterogeneous nations in the area like Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq (already has it-a good start), and Saudi Arabia (which I have mentioned I want liquidated eventually), and Yemen.

172 What, me worry?  Sat, May 28, 2011 8:49:14pm

re: #172 marjoriemoon

In fact, I noticed something about this too. Apparently, a lot of the antisemitism has been imported from/by Europe before the Holocaust occurred

For example, a good proxy for antisemitism is the Blood Libel myth Wikipedia had something that perked my ears. Look at the bolded:

1840 Rhodes blood libel: The Jews of Rhodes, during the Ottoman Empire, were accused of murdering a Greek Christian boy. The libel was supported by the local governor and the European consuls posted to Rhodes. Several Jews were arrested and tortured, and the entire Jewish quarter was blockaded for twelve days. An investigation carried out by the central Ottoman government found the Jews to be innocent.

That's right, Europeans have helped instigate this. I say, they fix it.

Yeah, genocidal aspirations and dreams of genetic superiority are probably nothing to worry about in regards to Jews.

It's an interesting thing actually, whether Egyptians should consider themselves as "Arabs" or not are deeply contested in Egypt. As a general rule, Egyptians didn't really consider themselves to be Arab until the '30s, and didn't push it until Nasser... and now it might be trending the other way again.

In fact, I noticed something about this too. Apparently, a lot of the antisemitism has been imported from/by Europe before the Holocaust occurred

For example, a good proxy for antisemitism is the Blood Libel myth Wikipedia had something that perked my ears. Look at the bolded:

That's right, Europeans have helped instigate this. I say, they fix it.

But they won't. Most of the euro-media hates Israel, and many European countries have Islamic populations that despise Israel. Europe has no incentive to deal with the problem.

I spent the afternoon reading up on Irish history. It's interesting to see how a little historical revisionism ans nationalist pride can lead to fascism.

My own prognostications for Egypt would have it falling into the "failed state" (e.g., Somalia) category before becoming a nation united behind some Nazi-type government. Egypt has big problems, the biggest of which is its young and burgeoning population, so large now that it cannot feed itself and is dependent upon food imports. Egypt doesn't have enough of its own natural resources to support industry for its population, and it is not exporting enough also. That is why it is dependent upon the US to fund its military.

No, that's not the big problem. The big problem is lack of economic growth mixed in with a sovereignty wrecking transnational federation whose competence is coming into doubt.

not necessarily. Those Egyptians influence by it would convince themselves that they are Arabs, not Africans, and then build up the identification of 'African' as 'black' and finally slather on a heaping of racism.

ISTR that during WWII there were a largish number of Egyptian officers (Sadat anyone?) who worked with the Nazi's not out of any particular ideological love but because they "weren't British:"

No, European Union.

The biggest problem with the EU is that it's too much like the Articles of Confederation - too much power given back to the (nation)states to be an effective central government. It's very possible that, and in my view it does, what Europe needs is a good solid federalist solution like the US Constitution.

The real problem is that the EU member states have too much fiscal sovereignty to maintain a single currency. Early retirement age in Greece is 57, in Germany it's 65. That's an untenable discrepancy.

Seriously, DF? Consider the disparity between Chicago (or Madison) and Birmingham or Atlanta - our nation encapsulates far greater discrepancies than Berlin vs. Paris. Tossing Athens into the mix is no different, really, than tossing in Athens, GA for us. ;)

I don't agree. Different languages (which we don't have), different histories (often of the nations in question at each other's throats), and different approaches to government. I regard the EU as a misbegotten sham and I want it gone.

Just so you understand, I'm not being smartassed here. I really don't see the EU any where near as harshly as you do.

The languages in Europe (dutch & german, italian & french & spanish) are often as close as some english dialects. Look to Switzerland and it's three official languages and a fourth (english) that 90% of the population knows better than I can remember way too many years of german (class room and army practical)

And, yes, the French & various varieties of Germans have been going at it for awhile. Are the last few times really all that much different than the last time that America had to spank the south for acting out of turn?

Europe is finally waking up and following us DF. Took them 2 centuries, but hey! It's a good thing in the end.

OK, then drop the single currency and kick Greece to the curb. The countries in question aren't going to be harmonized on points like that, the cultural disparity is too great.

The only cultural differences they're fighting over are the ones that produce real financial hardships, the fact that the Germans work longer in a more austere society while the Greeks get to retire early but can't pay for it. In fact the countries in question would be harmonized if they adopted identical retirement and social funding policies.

re: #198 Dark_Falcon

OK, you've made the whole thing bizarrely personal when it really has nothing to do with you. This seems to be about how you hate the idea of multi-culturalsim, not about the real world financial concerns of the people who are actually involved. They aren't fighting over language or history or the past, they're fighting over money. As far as different approaches to government go you said the fact that the EU was destroying sovereignty was the problem with it's exactly the opposite, they're retaining far too much sovereignty to practically maintain the single currency that the Eurozone (not the EU, there's a difference) has locked itself into.

What?

I'm just someone who is afraid of ticking people off. I'm usually unable to tell in real life. Also, I've had historical maps going through my head since seeing that story.

Ezra Levant is a Canuck goofball.

Don't worry too much about pissing people here off. It gets forgotten pretty quick.

In real life, you get better at reading emotions with experience.

WTF?!? What exactly was going on?

HP hardware issues. Replaced the plug-in 3 times. Then the CD writer, reader quit, then the motherboard was going to need replacing. . . . .

Ditto here. I think of Apple as a cult.

Sorry if I'm ticking anyone off with my Levant talk.

Shrug. I did IT as a job for a very long time. As soon as I got out I bought a Mac and have not bought anything else since. Even an old mac running a crappy thing like System 7.5 or OS 9 is better than any version of Windows that's I've had the misfortune of using (up to, and including Windows 7).

Who needs a middleman? Judge decides to put Citizen's United on steroids:

“For better or worse, Citizens United held that there is no distinction between an individual and a corporation with respect to political speech,” Judge Cacheris wrote in his opinion. “Thus, if an individual can make direct contributions within [the law's] limits, a corporation cannot be banned from doing the same thing.”

Prosecutors claimed that overturning the ban on direct corporate contributions would ignore a century of legal precedent, AP reports.

“Defendants would have the court throw out a century of jurisprudence upholding the ban on corporate political contributions, by equating expenditures—which the Court struck down in Citizens United—with contributions. This is, however, equating apples and oranges,” prosecutor Mark Lytle wrote in court papers.

Russians as a rule do not believe in mixed drinks. For that, they most always have a bite of something solid to chase it down, or failing that another non-alcoholic beverage.

How did your day-of-labor go?

When I was about 10, my uncle had a cabin cruiser. Since I was the youngest (i.e., smallest) male in the family, it was my job to scrape and paint the very bottom of the hull as the boat was on dry-dock

Once the boat was in the water and taken out for the 1st time that season,, HORRORS,,, no sonar !! (vital in the shallows of Boston Harbor, where you could go from a depth of 30 fathoms to 3 justlikethat)

Took the boat back out of the water to see what the malfunction was

Lo and behold, someone had painted over the device!!

((innocent looking 10 year old pleading for his life!!))

Top Al Qaeda commanders with close links to Bin Laden captured in SAS dawn raid

A crack SAS team has captured two top Taliban commanders without a shot being fired in a secret dawn raid in Afghanistan.

The 12 elite troops seized Maulawi Rahman and Maulawi Mohammed at a high-walled compound north of the remote town of Babaji in Helmand province.

Both men, who surrendered without a fight, are said to have been close confidants of Osama Bin Laden, the terror mastermind killed by US Special Forces in Pakistan last month.

Rahman and Mohammed – members of the Quetta Shura, the Taliban’s Pakistani-based high command – were held along with three henchmen, and 80kg of raw opium packed in bales with a street value of £128,000 was also seized.

House frogs!

Ribbit.

My ghetto apartment (obviously designed and constructed by freshly out-of-work Soviet housing bureaucrats shortly after the fall of Communism, using surplus Soviet materials) sits next to a creek (of sorts) that eventually empties into the Trinity river.

In years past, the creek has been home to several families of ducks, the occasional otter* and what must be thousands of invisible frogs. Except in the winter, you could go outside at night and hear what sounded like an enormous herd of frogs trolling for frog babes. I imagine them with little faux-hawk hairdos, reeking of Sex Panther cologne, and generally emulating the frogs of Jersey Shore.

The strange thing is that I only rarely saw any frogs. One time, I was walking my dog on a sort of rainy/misty evening just at dusk. It was at that TWILIGHT ZONE time of day at the tail-end of sunset just before dark, when human eyesight starts to fail and the world becomes black shapes on a dark blue canvass. Walking along, I noticed a small black shape flitting across the sidewalk. I assumed it was a cricket. When I got close enough, I realized it was a tiny little frog. Pretty neat! It was small enough that it could have lounged comfortably in a bottle cap.

This year, the ducks are still there, but the frog karaoke bar seems to have closed. Are you sufficiently familiar with froglore that you might have an explanation for where all the frogs have gone?

* I nearly came unglued the first time I saw an otter. I had no idea otters could be found in Texas, particularly urban North Texas. I saw one lazily swim up the creek, make landfall about 30 feet away from me, and look at me like, "eh, what's up, Doc?" I tried to get a little closer and it jumped back in the water and took off.

tl;dr - used to have frogs, don't have frogs now.

It sounds like, when they're not plotting the destruction of the Western Hemisphere for our electoral entertainment, these "commanders" spend their time setting up dope deals...it's probably safer work.

"Really, I prefer trading in opium. The terrorist attack plotting thing requires too many meetings and a few sketchy people carry way to many weapons on them when we do get together."

They are not above selling their product to their own people too. Something that BTW is strictly forbidden by Islam, but I guess money trumps ideology as usual, even with the Jihadis.

I've known a number of drug dealers in my time on this planet. I've never known them to be paragons of virtue or ethics. But that's just my personal experience, and not meant to be an indictment of all drug dealers.

This is the one day a year I find I get nostalgic about my Indiana roots. My dad, uncle and me with a big bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken and a cooler of cold beer.

What a show this race is

That sounds like a lovely breakfast...I haven't had Kentucky Fried Chicken in a few years...think I'm overdue.

I knew a guy who was a sales rep for Pfizer. He would go around to doctors' offices with a friggin' dolly loaded up with cases full of 'samples'. Did he more than double his income by illicitly selling Xanax? Hell yes.

Note: Pfizer makes many wonderful, life-saving products. I'm sure the entire corporation is made up of very fine, morally-upright people who only want to make unimaginably huge profits by treating human suffering.

Also, the one and only time I took Xanax recreationally did not result in a buzz or 'high' of any description, but did result in the single most refreshing night's sleep I have ever experienced in my life. Want to wake up really feeling like a million bucks? Take a 0.5mg Xanax about 4 hours before you hit the sack.

I read a truly terrible apologia for that from a fundamentalist Islamic cleric, once. It basically goes "Anyone using opium isn't a True Muslim anyway, so you can sell to them with no problem."

So self-serving.

443 Sol Berdinowitz  Sun, May 29, 2011 9:46:16am

The British had no qualms about trading opium to the Chinese.

And back when marijuana was used primarily by blacks and poor white bohemians in America, nobody cared too much about regulating it, either.

My best friends sister in Alaska got married to a coke dealer, if I hadn't already been married then his sister "Suze" would have absolutely been on my radar. She was bright, funny, beautiful in the way only half Native Americans can be, and just plain one of the 'good people.'

What she saw in "Martin" I will never know, the guy was a complete dirtbag with delusions of granduer, never in my life have I ever met such a haughty and snobbish lowlife. Eventually "Suze" had a baby boy named "Jake" who ended up spending a lot of time at my friends or sometimes my place when they needed babysitters so they could go out and party.

When "Jake" was two they had an armed invasion robbery of their apartment by other druggies looking for "Martins" stash and cash. Both "Martin" and "Suze" were beaten fairly badly while the thugs were trying to make them give up the location of the stash, finally one of them held a gun to "Jake's" head and threatened to shoot him unless they gave up the drugs. "Suze" at that point finally told them where it was and they all lived thru that day.

"Martin" being an asshole lowlife drug dealer could not forgive "Suze" for telling the robbers where the drugs were even in order to save her sons life. The relationship got very strained and "Martin" started abusing "Suze" (I actually had thoughts about shooting him more than once during that time period but my better judgement prevailed, perhaps unfortunatly).

Close to a year later when "Martin" was supposed to be watching "Jake" at home and "Suze" was at work, three year old "Jake" wandered more than three blocks from home to a busy mainstreet and wandered out in front of a pick-up truck. ("Martin" stepped inside for a minute with visitors to complete a sale and then ended up getting high with them while leaveing "Jake" outside alone).

I could not attend the funeral, I knew that if I saw "Martin" I would end up trying to kill the bastard.

I have some really awful neighbors a few doors down. 3 generations of lowlifes and a few pit bulls. They have 2 young kids (maybe 4-5 years old) and I can't stand being out when the kids are running around. I've seen the little boy almost run over 6-7 times. The mom is too busy taking on her cell phone and smoking pot to watch the children. It's a tragedy waiting to happen.

One of the best tools you can have for beer can chicken is a syringe. One for you and one for the chicken. (j/k-lemon/orange/garlic/rosemary/olive oil/blah/blah/blah)

If you have to do taters, get a big bag of fingerling potatoes (those little fuckers that look kind of misshapen). Cut the larger ones in half, toss them in olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt, pepper, and some dried herbs, then throw 'em in a 9x13 in the oven at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes.

Thank me later.
