Yet Another Andrew Breitbart Smear Falls Apart

Fraudster is fraudulent
Wingnuts • Views: 62,826

As soon as I heard about the “scandal” involving Rep. Anthony Weiner, and saw it being pushed like crazy by fraudster Andrew Breitbart, I knew it would turn out to be yet another phony story.

And that’s exactly what happened. If you haven’t heard about the latest Breitbart scam, here’s a pretty good summary (but they should check the spelling of their headline): Brietbart to use SEX SMEAR on Rep. Anthony Weiner.

In a nutshell, someone apparently hacked into Weiner’s Twitter and yfrog (a picture-hosting Twitter app) accounts, posted a lewd photo, then sent a screenshot of it to a student in Seattle. Wingnuts, of course, refuse to believe that Weiner didn’t post it himself.

(Update: there was no hacking involved. The photo was never posted to Weiner’s account. Someone may have photoshopped a screenshot of a yfrog page to make it look like it came from Weiner’s page.)

(Update 2: the story changes again - apparently Weiner’s yfrog account really was cracked, and the image was posted there.)

The New York Times has a report, and I have to ask: when will the media stop treating Andrew Breitbart like a legitimate “conservative” source? The article doesn’t even mention the numerous other frauds perpetrated by this right wing attack dog: Congressman Says Hacker Sent Lewd Photo From His Account.

I mean, good grief. This is how they describe the situation:

The episode unfolded Saturday night when it was reported on the Web site biggovernment.com, run by the conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart. It played out all day Sunday on the Internet, with Mr. Weiner, a Democrat who represents part of Brooklyn and Queens, addressing the matter on his own Twitter and Facebook accounts, and with bloggers from the left and the right arguing about whether this might be the start of a scandal or an example of how easy it is for political rivals to harm each other’s reputations using new technologies.

It just might be an example of how Andrew Breitbart harms people and smears their reputations, because that’s what he does, but you won’t get that context from the Times.

Meanwhile, the student who received the obscene photo is being harassed and stalked on the Internet by deranged right wingers — and that’s also not surprising, because that’s what they do: Student who got lewd pic from Rep. Anthony Weiner’s Twitter account denies she’s his mistress.

Cordova said she has been harassed for weeks online after she started following Weiner on Twitter and the congressman added her to the list of about 200 people he follows.

Her harrasser “started posting about me, saying, ‘Oh, the congressman is following school girls,’ tweeting it over and over. It was very annoying,” Cordova told the Daily News. When the crotch shot appeared online, she said the same Twitter user was the first to comment on it.

“Since I had dealt with this person and his cohorts before, I assumed that the tweet and the picture were their latest attempts at defaming the congressman and harassing his supporters,” she said. “Annoyed, I responded with something along the lines of ‘are you f***ing kidding me?’ and ‘I’ve never seen this. You people are sick,’” she said.

Cordova said she blocked her accounts and thought that would be the end of it. But taking down her information only fanned the flames. Cordova said she’s had the worst weekend of her life.

“I’ve watched in sheer disbelief as my name, age, location, links to any social networking site I’ve ever used, my old phone numbers and pictures have been passed along from stranger to stranger.

“My friends have received phone calls from people claiming to be old friends of mine, attempting to obtain my contact information,” she said.

“I also do not have a clear understanding as to how or why exactly I am involved in this fiasco,” she wrote.

“I do know that my life has been seriously impacted by speculation and faulty allegations. My reputation has been called into question by those who lack the character to report the facts.”

"My reputation has been called into question by those who lack the character to report the facts."

I think this is the best summary of the modern right wing and media malpractice that I've ever read.

And we really, really need stronger anti-harassment laws to deal with the douchebags who destroy people's lives with this crap.

You gotta wonder how soon it'll be before Breitbart does this to the wrong person.

3 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Mon, May 30, 2011 10:44:31am

At what point can there be criminal charges for this kind of thing? Harassing people online and IRL. Does someone have to be physically hurt first?

That may already be unfolding with the Sherrod case. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. He's got it coming, that's for sure.

Glad you posted this Charles, smelled funny when I first saw it.

The real question: when will Breitbart's credibility be universally questioned? Seriously, are the big media institutions asleep?

6 Kragar  Mon, May 30, 2011 10:49:40am

The National Enquirer has a better track record than Breitbart does at this point.

7 Sol Berdinowitz  Mon, May 30, 2011 10:53:15am

We are dealing with media outlets which are inept and/or lazy.

As long as there are people like Breitbart and O'Keefe who continue to provide them with material they can just dish out without any further effort, it spares them all the tedious journalistic background work of researching, interviewing, etc.

8 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Mon, May 30, 2011 10:53:20am

WASHINGTON (AP) - PBS officials say hackers have cracked the network's website, posting a phony story claiming dead rapper Tupac Shakur was alive in New Zealand, and a group that claimed responsibility for the hacking complained about a recent "Frontline" investigative news program on WikiLeaks.

It's easy to see how this is going to end up for Breitbart. He's making lots of money but having the dirty work done by these low level dupes is going to backfire. In a criminal investigation some lame blogger might resent taking the fall for Breitbart while he grows his media empire. Eventually somebody's going to spill the beans.

Exclusive: Mediaite Analysis Of ‘Weinergate’ Photos Supports Anthony Weiner And Andrew Breitbart

Reuters‘ Anthony De Rosa looked at the data for the photo at issue and notes that it doesn’t match previous images uploaded by the Congressman – the type of camera is different, as is the content included.

In fact, in the data for the contested image certain information that would be important for verification – such as the modification date of the image – is missing entirely.

As others have pointed out (which I forgot), Sherrod has initiated legal action against him. Personally, I hope she grind him into dust.

You're probably right about Weiner, particularly since it appears Breitbart didn't actually create this specific lie. Still, I imagine Weiner isn't someone to fuck with, if the C-SPAN clips I've seen of him are any indication.

As the GOP moves to the right, presidential hopefuls abandon old centrist stands

On energy, taxes, health care and other topics, the top candidates hold positions that are more conservative than those they espoused a few years ago.

The shifts reflect the evolving views of conservative voters, who will play a major role in choosing the Republican nominee. In that sense, the candidates’ repositioning seems savvy or even essential.

But the eventual nominee will face President Barack Obama in the 2012 general election, when independent voters appear likely to be decisive players once again.

A complete timeline, including the Twitter Posts by Rep. Weiner (who reported the hack right as it happened), Wolfe, BigGovernment's Dana Loesch and some really sleazy tweets by Brietbart himself are at this Kos article by "stef", which is the one that the New York Daily News corroborates.

Breitbart and Hoft are in more dire need of a blowjob than any white men in history...

Perhaps they can take care of that for each other.

Got that from the figure of Tim Benzedrino in the "Bored of the Rings" parody.

I hate Breitfart as much as anyone, but DailyKos "proof" that Breitbart faked anything seems to be a load of horseshit.

I went to yfrog, took a screenshot of the normal page and ran it through the error level analyzer.

Result:

[Link: errorlevelanalysis.com...]

The same difference between text portions. Why? Easy: they're different sizes so they blur differently.

So Burpbait is most probably not to blame here, he (or rather his minions) simply took the real screenshot of a real page. Either Weiner or the hacker are to blame, depending on whether you believe Weiner's explanation.

PS: another DKos analysis based on ephemeral "evidence" like dates in file names and whatnot is not very convincing IMHO, especially as it uncritically repeats the "doctored screenshot" claim.

re: #81 sergey romanov

Yes, that's what I posted in the update 2 above -- someone apparently did upload the photo to Weiner's account.

Latest news is that the photo was supposedly retrieved from a cache, and has meta tags that are nothing like the other photos posted by Weiner with his Blackberry.

re: #82 Charles

If it wasn't from his Bb then it supports his account about hacking (though he wrote about his FB being hacked, go figure), though it doesn't provide iron-clad evidence (it's not like he necessarily uses only Bb). I don't necessarily believe one version over another at this point.

Anyhow, it's not the prurient aspect that interests me here (couldn't care less, frankly), rather it's the widespread acceptance of faux photo-pseudo-analysis by DailyKos and progressive blogosphere, which is not unlike what happened to Obama's birth certificates. "Heat maps", anyone?

OK, rant over. Back to the lair.

Please! Be very careful if you want to accuse someone of doing nasty stuff on Internet! The name Dan Wolfe popped up as the one who orchestrated this whole fraud. But the name Dan Wolfe is very common!

Message is, don't jump to conclusions! You might accuse the wrong guy!

Error level analysis is a very real forensics technique, though; it's been used by intelligence services to analyze Al Qaeda photos, for example:

re: #85 Charles

It's not the tool I'm criticizing but its particular (mis)use in this case. The DK commenter who made the claim did not even bother testing her hypothesis with a control sample, and her claim was immediately hailed as "proof". I see now that there is a similar posting at DK to mine comment above, where a blogger did the same thing (control sample), so at least some people there are starting to wake up.

OK, now I'm really gone (nearly 3 a.m. here).

More faux investigative journalism with O'Keefe-style doctored/planted "evidence" legitimized by the Breitbart Propaganda Palace for the Propagation of Malicious Gossip.

You know the old saying: Fool me once, shame on Breitbart. Fool me twice, I must be a right winger.

This story keeps changing. First it was "hacking" (a federal crime), and now it's a "prank" (per Weiner himself). If there is a crime involved here, the FBI should be brought in because they WILL track down the perpetrator(s). However, Weiner has lawyered up and is "exploring the next proper steps". It can't be swept under the rug now. Either there was a crime committed here or there wasn't.

There are ways to get a lot closer to the truth. Twitter can tell what the source IP address was, and can make that fact public, if Mr. Weiner makes the request. He could also ask for law enforcement to investigate, as they did when Ms. Palin's email account was breached. Wait and see whose story checks out. Someone is going to look very foolish; don't let it be you.

92 Bird Dog  Tue, May 31, 2011 1:43:11pm

Weiner has put a cone of silence around himself. Two words: Chris Lee.

re: #92 Bird Dog

What a hoot! You really really want this to be true, don't you?

94 Bird Dog  Tue, May 31, 2011 3:05:05pm

re: #93 Charles

I don't really care, Charles. Weiner changed his story from "hack" to "prank" and then he gave an embarrassing Q&A. Chris Lee's "offense" was not much worse, yet he resigned.

re: #95 Charles

Whatever, Charles, but I think you jumped the gun by uncritically taking Weiner's initial statements at face value, and now you're backtracking with CYA updates. Strange that Weiner is lawyering up instead of policing up. I remember when Palin's e-mail account was hacked. It became a police matter in short order. No such deal with Weiner.

And I think you're a gullible fool, who can't tell the difference between updates as a story breaks and "CYA updates," or between Andrew Breitbart right wing fantasies and reality.

I am absolutely appalled that someone like Andrew Breitbart can be a part of our National discussion. He is not worth the bits required to send this post.

harmless sh*t, tupac's continued existence is not going to ruin anybody's career.

It's about journalistic integrity - or, rather, the lack thereof - & the resultant/accompanying hypocrisy, so mentioning the fake Tupac story was important.
