Corsi’s Idiotic Birther Book Debuts at #6

Bulk sales drive ranking
Wingnuts • Views: 42,830

The new, freakishly bad Birther book by World Nut Daily’s Jerome Corsi has debuted at number six on the New York Times’ Best Sellers list.

But note the little dagger symbol.

WHERE’S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?, by Jerome R. Corsi. (WND, $25.95.) An argument that President Obama is not a natural-born U.S. citizen. (†)

This indicates that the book is being bought in bulk. Right wing groups often buy up large quantities of these kinds of books in order to pump up their rankings, then end up giving them away, selling them in bargain basements, or donating them.

It does raise a good question…..I mean seriously, where is the birth certificate?

All over the web?

Oh, you mean the actual physical copy.

The state of Hawaii has it, just like every other birth certificate issued by Hawaii.

Perhaps wingnuts are just getting picky about what they want to use as fuel for their post-apocalyptic/socialistic world so they need lots of books to burn.

That’s about it that I can think of. The rest fall under the category of….

Seriously. It’s a theory, and the answer doesn’t actually matter, because they’re both dead, and his death didn’t matter much for America.

It might have. Harding usually ranks at the bottom of any list of US presidents, along with the doughface disasters Pierce and Buchanan. In recent years though his reputation has undergone a minor face-lift, thanks to an aspect of his policies that was little-appreciated at the time but that looms large today: Harding had a very good civil rights record for the time, better than his successor Coolidge and incomparably better than his openly racist predecessor Wilson.

I think it may be because they “buy” the space buy offering the books to the retailers at really low prices. It’s more about spreading the message than the profits.

US Grant is another much vilified president whose reputation is improving in light of 21st century sensibilities. He had some of the same problems as Harding, he relied on corrupt friends, and the same strength, a genuine concern for civil rights. Grant’s military reputation has also improved by leaps and bounds among modern historians and analysts.

Move over wingnuts…the real crazy is about to enter the presidential race.

Moore has tried professional kickboxing in Texas, ranching in the Australian outback and politics in Alabama. In that Deep South state, he ran for public office several times, including two runs for governor. He was trounced in both of those races. But he also got elected chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court — only to get booted off the bench less than three years later for disobeying a court order.

And what court order was that? The one saying you couldn’t build a fucking 10 Commandments monument on government property.

Yes, he’s considering a run as a Republican.

I’ve always found this rather peculiar, this anti-Grant view. Of course the post-Civil War nation, especially after Reconstruction, became much more sympathetic to the South. I suspect that is part of the reason why Grant attracted at least some of the hostility he did. Generations of historians afterward viewed Reconstruction negatively, and along with that, the President who was most responsible for its implementation. At the same time, the notion arose that Lee was some sort of “noble” man, even a “patriot”. I still don’t get this.

An old love - and I mean from 20 years ago - found me through a business network, sent a few innocent emails, and then asked me to tell her whether I ever thought of her, and if so, what it was. (We corresponded for a decade, and were even writing when - unbeknownst to me - she was married.)

It’s mutual, it’s beautiful, it’s hopeless, and it’s life.

Have to bust out the Yeats for that:

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

Good luck to you and your pilgrim soul, with love from me and Jimmah.

Egyptian general admits ‘virginity checks’ conducted on protesters

A senior Egyptian general admits that “virginity checks” were performed on women arrested at a demonstration this spring, the first such admission after previous denials by military authorities.

The allegations arose in an Amnesty International report, published weeks after the March 9 protest. It claimed female demonstrators were beaten, given electric shocks, strip-searched, threatened with prostitution charges and forced to submit to virginity checks.

At that time, Maj. Amr Imam said 17 women had been arrested but denied allegations of torture or “virginity tests.”

But now a senior general who asked not to be identified said the virginity tests were conducted and defended the practice.

“Patriot” is going a bit too far — he did take up arms against the US, after all. But he kept the confederates from starting a guerilla insurgency in the wake of their loss, and he spent the rest of his life working to bring the sides back together.

“Noble” is probably going too far too, but he conducted himself better than a lot of defeated generals.

Because only virgins can be raped silly,

“The girls who were detained were not like your daughter or mine,” the general said. “These were girls who had camped out in tents with male protesters in Tahrir Square, and we found in the tents Molotov cocktails and (drugs).”

The general said the virginity checks were done so that the women wouldn’t later claim they had been raped by Egyptian authorities.

“We didn’t want them to say we had sexually assaulted or raped them, so we wanted to prove that they weren’t virgins in the first place,” the general said. “None of them were (virgins).”

Don’t get me wrong, it sucks that Egypt probably won’t go to a modern democracy overnight. But the next lot in will (we hope) at least have to pay a bit more lip service to what “ordinary” people want. And hopefully those “ordinary” people want less unpleasantness, for the most part.

For example, I don’t know how many of you have been following developments in Brazil of late, but in Brazil there has been a growing conflict over what to do with the Amazonian basin, with many different “sides”. It is now turning bloody. Rapid deforestation is on the doorstep and Brazil’s leader, though sympathetic to long term ecological sustainability, is getting pressure from both sides (industry, and the communist led locals). Now it is turning bloody.

On another front, industry spin master Michael Lind published a piece in Salon that essentially is blowing smoke up the collective asses of Wall Street investors (as well as their tea partying marks.)

Reasons I’m cynical: the army is still in control. They were in control when Mubarak was on the throne, they will veto anyone coming to power they do not like. Plus, continued/increased outbreaks of hostility toward the Christian community.

What will reduce my cynicism: seeing elections that look above-board and repeat for a few cycles. Seeing minority groups, women and the poor make some progress.

Just because people want freedom don’t always mean that people GET freedom. The desire is clearly there, but I don’t know how far it’s going to get, in terms of real change. The people at Tienanmen wanted democratic principles too.

Coal industry looks past Japan dip as Asia demand booms

Coal producers in Indonesia and Australia are racing to ramp up output to capture Asia’s booming demand for power that has quickly filled the gap left by a drop in demand from quake-hit Japan, executives at a conference said on Tuesday.

Exports of coal from Indonesia, the world’s top exporter of thermal coal used to fuel power stations, were diverted to China in the wake of Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in March, showing the hunger of the rest of Asia to soak up available spot cargoes.

Per unit of energy released, methane combined with oxygen emits fewer molecules of CO2 than does coal (pure coal would simply be pure C).

However, what Lind ignores (because it messes with his sales pitch) is:

1) methane released into the atmosphere;
2) the use of natural gas leads to more consumption which leads to more energy use which leads to more consumption…. etc.
3) world coal use has increased along with world natural gas use, to confirm #2 above.
