Video: Weiner Refuses to Answer Questions About Nontroversy

Weiner can’t win at this point
Politics • Views: 44,419

On CNN, Rep. Anthony Weiner tells reporters he isn’t going to talk about the incredibly dumb “Weinergate” nontroversy. Do you think this is the right way for him to handle the situation?

I don’t know how I’d handle it, but I do know that this is exactly what smear merchants like Andrew Breitbart count on. If they can get their target into a position where he has to deny their accusations, there’s just no way for the target to look good. If he denies, he looks like he has something to hide, and if he says he won’t talk about it, he also looks like he has something to hide. He can’t win. No matter what Weiner says at this point, it’s going to be used to make him look bad.

Why would Rep. Weiner do this? He has a promising career, is well liked and was mulling a run for Mayor of NYC. To do something as childish and stupid as this would be political suicide, even if he did mean to do it privately, as the right is now suggesting.

As a dedicated Twitter user myself, the most likely scenario is that Weiner himself mistakenly DM’ed (direct-messaged) the “prank” photo to the young woman in Seattle and intended it to be private. It takes just one wrong keystroke for a private DM to appear in one’s public timeline. (Allah wonders if Weiner would be so stupid as to post the photo through publicly-viewed Yfrog, but as we’ve seen from the recent bipartisan parade of — pardon my language — political wankers from Ensign and Edwards to Schwarzenegger and Sanford, etc, etc, etc — politicians do supremely stupid things when they think with the wrong organ.)

Good grief.

Ah, you're saying the most likely scenario is that he sent it? But nobody's claiming that happened. What's claimed is that it was uploaded to the yfrog account.

There's a Lyndon B. Johnson quote about calling his opponent a "pig F'cker" and making him deny it. Seems appropriate here.

6 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Tue, May 31, 2011 5:42:41pm

At this point, the most appropriate thing to do is allow the investigation to proceed.

And change our passwords to something a little tougher.

Oh my goodness. The conservatives on my colleges sort-of alumni forum are all over this. Particularly comparing it to Bill Clinton and Christopher Lee (of course). And, just as you've said, Charles, every thing he's done and said is being used against him. He says his account was hacked? Oh sure. Nice excuse. He denies any knowledge of the picture or how it happened? Riiiiight. He consults an attorney to find out what his options are to pursue this? Yeah, he's totally hiding something and hedging his bets. And of course, even though there is nothing about the picture to indicate who it's a picture of, every one of them discusses the picture as though it's obviously/definitely of Rep. Weiner. And all discussion is appended with "since he's a Democrat, the media doesn't care/this'll actually help his career" snidery. Ugh. This is why I don't usually bother entering political/current events discussion on that board. It's terribly frustrating.

Well the best way to deal with something like this is to;
A. Mock Breitbart
B. Sic your lawyers on him
C. Point out that there is a private citizen involved who is now being harrassed

19 austin_blue  Tue, May 31, 2011 5:49:08pm

I think he is doing the right thing by keeping his pie hole shut on the subject. When someone asks, "Tell me Congressman, do you still beat your wife?", the correct response is to shake one's with a look of pity and say, "Did your parents have any children who grew up with functioning forebrains? Next question!".

Because they're in CYA mode, they need something to take the focus off the shellacking they've been taking in the press of late. The GOP has become its own worst enemy and the only way to regain the momentum is to take the focus off them long enough to find something they can gain traction with. Hence a "sex scandal" involving a Democrat, particularly one whose been getting a lot of press of late for speaking out against the Ryan Plan and assorted Republican lunacy.

38 What, me worry?  Tue, May 31, 2011 5:57:30pm

I think Weiner is handling it perfectly. The way a politician should handle such a ridiculous accusation.

A reporter says, "The distraction would go away if you would answer some of our questions." And he replies, "I'm not convinced of that."

And he's right. It won't go away or rather, it will go away quickest with the least attention. He's already made his statements. It's not true, so why keep going on about it?

39 Killgore Trout  Tue, May 31, 2011 5:58:14pm

I still haven't seen mention of a police investigation so I'm starting to think it may have been a photoshop and not a hack. Since photoshopping isn't a crime there might not be a criminal case. Wiener might pursue a civil case but there may be no crime committed.

Yes, good point, and it irritates the hell out of me to see concern trolls compare this to Palin's email hack - in that case, it was completely obvious from the get-go that someone succeeded in logging in to her account, and that's how they caught the person! He was dumb enough to leave the URL visible in the email screenshots, which allowed law enforcement to identify the proxy server he used and then trace his IP.

In this case, we still don't know exactly what happened (i.e. was the photo posted from Weiner's account or not?) And if that investigation is still ongoing, it makes perfect sense that he's hired lawyers in the meantime.

I Think I Understand Breitbart Now

I think I understand Andrew Breitbart's personality profile. I knew a kid like him growing up in Clinton, Iowa.

The boy's name was "Danny." He was small, had a repaired cleft palate, and did everything he could to pick fights with the bigger, tougher kids.

Most of the time, the bigger, tougher kids would just ignore him. But sometimes, Danny got his ass beat. And I mean, beat real good

He'd come struggling back in after recess at St. Irenaeus Elementary School, his nose bubbling with a mixture of blood, snot and tears, crying to Sister Mary Clarita about how that bully Greg or that even bigger bully Marty picked on him and it was all "for nuthin'".

What Sister Mary Clarita never heard was Danny on the playground calling Greg "fatso" or calling Marty a "retard". And if they'd ignore him, he'd follow after them saying the word over and over and over again until the kid finally wheeled around and bopped him on his incredibly easy-to-make-bleed schnozz.

Marty or Greg would get in trouble. Danny would sit in the back of the classroom, sniffling, his eyes still all moist, looking all the world like a victim of a war crime.

Continues...

It gets better...he used the time he had on CNN to further claim that he was right about Sherrod - or at least that something good came of his actions with smearing her... The guy is an unapologetic piece of shit. He deserves to be on CNN about as much as some crazy fucker living outside a BART station in San Francisco strung out on drugs and yelling at strangers.

there is no pushback besides CJ, and he is doing the best he can....AB has been gaining speed and sooner or later you assume he'll lose control...but these are crazy times....I expect to see these heads running for office soon enough

re: #44 jamesfirecat

It won't be Romney or if it is expect him to be saddled with a Palin like VP.

It might be Pawlenty...

I figure my prediction of "a decade" gives me three presidential elections.

They might run Romney this year, but he's a Patrician Flip Flopper from Massachusetts so good luck with that and that means by 2016, the GOP will feel free to nominate someone like Palin, Cain or Paul since its "their turn"

What would be really cool is, if the Democrats get both houses back in 2012 they start treating the Republicans like the Republicans treat them...and they take the initial whining and criticism about "ramming down the throats" of Republicans their legislation...go for it. Protect Americans, raise taxes, protect the environment...spend the first year and a half in office "ramming" through as much progressive legislation as they can. Then campaign on it in 2014 without shame. Instead of losing seats, they'll gain more. Then, in 2015 they can pass "Medicare for All" and force auto manufacturers to build 50% of their fleets as hybrids (the auto companies, knowing this is coming, will already be prepared for this). That's how you say, "America, fuck yeah!" and make it mean something.

I think that's a likely scenario. Plus Obama won't have another term hanging over his head to worry about. The last few years have taught him quite a bit about the position, as well.

Unfortunately, I think it not only unlikely, but impossible.

Democrats have demonstrated themselves unfit to lead. The fiasco of the past 2-3 years is embarrassing; how they squandered the momentum of a landslide victory in 2008 and proved themselves unable to perform so many basic functions of government, such as passing a budget, is inexcusable. Yes, a significant part of that is the fact that they have to give up a third to a half of the government to a bizarre cult. That is no excuse for not leading, or governing. In any other political situation the Democrats should be derided as the embarrassments they are and removed from power. However, in the USA, they are the only political party that exists at the moment, and there is simply no alternative. Such is life. You do the best you can with what you have.

The real reason such a scenario is impossible is that the most powerful element in the USA is the media. And the media war has been won, by the aforementioned insane cult. This means that a significant plurality of the populace will never support governing that actually benefits the citizens of the USA at the expense of those that control the wealth. It's a shame, but it is the truth.

You asked what someone like Weiner should do if confronted by media outlets under this situation. I think you put it best -

Pretty much say that - these hacks put him in a no-win situation and denials don't matter.

Unfit to lead? You think Republicans are fit to lead? A legacy made off the backs of the elderly, women, the poor and immigrants? Really now.

The economy was in the toliet and the lack of affordable healthcare was killing more people than the diseases. That's the big two that happened when Obama was elected. Also, the Republican party has shown themselves for incompetents when the only bit of significant legislation was Ryan's Medicare proposal that they themselves wouldn't even swallow.

The Democrats are slow out of the gate. That's true, but I'd rather squander opportunities than pass bad law, if you're giving me a choice.

I think that he was trying to say that neither party is fit to lead.

Not at all. What I said was that the Democrats have demonstrated themselves unfit to lead, but that they are the only political party in the country, and thus we have no choice. The modern Republican party is no longer a political party, but rather a bizarre cult that the US political system inexplicably allows to control significant parts of government.

I still haven't seen mention of a police investigation so I'm starting to think it may have been a photoshop and not a hack. Since photoshopping isn't a crime there might not be a criminal case. Wiener might pursue a civil case but there may be no crime committed.

The only problem with that is I haven't read anywhere that Weiner denies the tweet and the pic came from his hacked "pranked" account. There's a very good reason he hasn't asked the FBI to look into how this happened.....ask Martha Stewart what happens to people who don't give 100% truthful statements to the FBI.

I don't have any concerns. He's not my husband and she's not my sister. The only "concern" I have is how many men are trying their hardest to come up with an excuse. It reminds me of the tiger woods episode on South Park.

Rich, successful men suddenly want to have sex with many, many women, and the nation's top scientists are called in to put a stop to the epidemic. After extensive testing, some of the boys in South Park Elementary are also diagnosed as sex addicts. The search for a cure to the outbreak of sexual addiction leads them all the way to Independence Hall.

re: #225 Charles

Anthony Weiner is being attacked by the right wing because he's an effective voice for the Democratic Party -- and especially because he's calling on Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from voting on health care.

This stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum.

Which Thomas will not do, nor should he. He's not required to recuse himself because of where his wife worked and he never lied about it. Weiner is trying to get rid of a conservative vote that is sure to go against Obamacare. Not that I blame him, since if the sides were reversed I'd do the same thing.

(cut)

The real reason such a scenario is impossible is that the most powerful element in the USA is the media. And the media war has been won, by the aforementioned insane cult. This means that a significant plurality of the populace will never support governing that actually benefits the citizens of the USA at the expense of those that control the wealth. It's a shame, but it is the truth.

While your post, overall, deserves frank discussion, I must respectfully disagree with this point (yes, I'm a Democrat). The Media is most definitely NOT the most powerful element in the USA. The most powerful element are multinational corporations, folks like the Kochs, and foundations like John Mellon Scaife's, that *influence* the media.

Companies with a vested interest in keeping the US populace dumb as rocks fund the groups that the media needs to maintain ratings. It's incestuous. It's evil. It results in Policy that screws the majority of working people while convincing them that it is in their best interest to believe the crap that is being shit upon them. It is modern American politics.

re: #194 marjoriemoon

But I don't see that that's true, they are unfit to lead. Why are they unfit? Because Obama squandered opportunities? Or we just like social programs.

Like I say, better on the back burner than bad law.

Of course. The Republican Party is neither a party nor an alternative to government.

However, the momentum following 2008 was, without exaggeration, historic. The Presidency, the Senate, and the House, all controlled by one party. This was the moment, as it were. And instead, nothing. No bold leadership on alternative energy. No sea change in the approach towards climate change. A watered down health care bill that, while welcome, does not significantly address the very serious problem of medical costs. But even that I can forgive - I can weep for lost opportunities, but demanding excellent statesmanship is a high bar.

What I can't forgive is the failure to do even basic functions of government like passing a budget, and filling nominated posts. Seriously? Not passing a budget? Yes, Republicans will obstruct and block. That's because they are a bizarre cult. You simply cannot allow the actions of an insane cult to hold up the function of the government of the world's only superpower. You have the Presidency, the biggest bully pulpit in the world. You have the Senate. Use them, and get something done.

Right, you lost elections. So bills you don't like get passed. It sucks, but its suppose to taste like a shit taco. Throwing out an impartial judiciary ain't the solution. Yeah. And for some reason you believe Breitbart.

Why?

In a way, the last three years have been the story of Republicans and the right wing completely abandoning any pretense at ethical behavior, in a naked lust for political power.

The right has lost its ethical moorings, and will now lie, cheat, steal, smear, and libel anyone if they think it will get them the control they crave.

Then let the SCOTUS, minus Thomas (who has a vested, long-undisclosed link to the healthcare industry, via his wife), decided whether the law is unconstitutional. I would expect Thomas to recuse himself in healthcare industry matters, just as I would expect a lower court judge to do so on matters in which there is a clear conflict-of-interest.

That really disappoints me, DF. If nothing else, I would think you'd be aware of the precedent that was being set that could then be used against something you want later on? If we can't have a consistant ethical standard for those who are supposed to be the arbiters of justice, then where, pray tell, do we have one? Or shall we simply say that situational ethics is fine for the judiciary and that only those with sufficient cash on the barrel head are deserving of gaining their result and that justice no longer applies?

That's the thing. I don't find it beyond the realm of the possible that a politician accidentally sent around a picture of himself in his underoos, although I have to admit that I find it awful convenient that he sent a picture of himself that includes no face, or hand, or anything that can conveniently be indentified. (Heck, if it was the bare Weiner, his wife would be able to look at it and say, "Nope.")

What I do find almost impossible is that Breitbart is telling the truth.

312 What, me worry?  Tue, May 31, 2011 7:42:02pm

re: #240 Renaissance_Man

Yea that wasn't good. I was pissed at that, too.

Obama was a little green. how I read it. Had he been a little bit more of a seasoned politician, it probably would have looked different. In fact, Bill Clinton made a very public statement a few months after Obama won that since he had the Senate, he needed to make good work of it because he can always lose it. He was talking from experience, of course.

But he's grown now, Obama, and I think is a different man that he was 3 years ago. Much stronger and more decisive. A stronger man to get his ideas put through. I have no problems betting on that.

Fox News hacked (sorta) -

Hello

Last night I hacked into the FoxNews news ticker on 6th avenue in NYC.

Here's the video. If you'd like to know why, just read the message in the hack.

I accessed the Fox ticker basically to get your attention. Also because Fox deserves it: they're the 24/7 mouthpiece of the right wing. They are huge perpetuators of the big lie.

This country isn't broke. Question is: where is the money going?

Americans have a right to know their pockets are being fleeced by corporations and tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and we can no longer tolerate the deceit FoxNews is perpetuating.

For the record, I am not connected to Anonymous or any of the recent attacks on the PSN, PBS, Nasdaq or So-net.

We are being lied to and you cannot stop Americans from fighting for the truth. Sorry my friend is somewhat annoyingly enthusiastic in the video but it's one of the best hacks in recent memory so cut her a break.

For those who think this is fake and that the sign can not play color. [Link: bit.ly...]

This getting the Nephew with a DUI back on the road thing is turning out to be rather more expensive than I thought. $1900 for a car, followed by $589.55 for title transfer, registration, tag. Then $157.50 to get the breathalyzer interlock device installed, plus 72.50 per month for inspection and log downloads for six months. Then $533.00 just to buy his drivers license back, and then, well then there is the insurance, nevermind the total, I'm embarressed to say how much that is going to cost for the six months.

I of course made it plain that this is absolutely it, whether he completes the six months or not, I'm done. He better not fuck this up or he wont be getting back on the road for quite a while if he has to pay it on his own dime. I'm rooting for him and he is a decent kid, just not sure he can keep it together for six months. :(

You saw the ass? Combined with the knowledge that Fox was punked. It's enough. I got tired of looking for a better vid.

I followed that ass up the stairs 6 times.

re: #332 Dark_Falcon

I hate it when I do this. I react emotionally and personalize something I shouldn't. It leaves me in a bad place and burns bridges. I've learned not to do it at work but sometimes I still do it at home.

It's the damn bunker mentality at work again, with fear of things closing in leaving me stressed even when I should not worry as much as I do. The way I wound up is worthy of a Downfall parody.

/mostly kidding with that last line.

I like you Dark, you wear your heart on your sleeve.
I wanna nominate you as the LGF crazy uncle.
