Why the Right is Attacking Rep. Weiner

It’s all about destroying health care
Politics • Views: 43,522

Here’s the real reason why the right wing knives are looking for Rep. Anthony Weiner’s scalp: Justice Clarence Thomas’s wife received $150,000 from anti-health care reform group.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas released his new financial disclosure form on Friday under pressure from Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and others.

Mother Jones reported that his financial disclosure form indicates his wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, received a $150,000 salary from the group Liberty Central in 2010 and less than $15,000 from an anti-health care reform lobbying firm she founded.

Liberty Central, which she helped found, supports the repeal of the the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Weiner had taunted Thomas via Twitter on Friday, but his criticisms where quickly overshadowed by the so-called “Weinergate” fiasco that broke out Sunday. The congressman had previously called on Thomas to recuse himself from cases involving health care reform because of his wife’s financial connections to groups dedicated to its repeal.

“The appearance of a conflict of interest merits recusal under federal law,” a letter written by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and signed by 74 Members of Congress stated. “From what we have already seen, the line between your impartiality and you and your wife’s financial stake in the overturn of healthcare reform is blurred.”

Quis custodiet?

As a 501(c)(4), the group [Liberty Central] can raise unlimited money for lobbying without identifying all its donors. So how will we know whether Thomas is taking himself out of every relevant case? Liberty Central should err on the side of disclosure—let's see if it does. This is particularly salient because Justice Thomas, and Justice Thomas alone, will make the decision about whether to sit out a case. Recusal calls by the individual justices aren't reviewed by the court as a whole, or any other body. "That's the real problem," Stanford law professor Deborah Rhode says. "There's no structure for oversight. I'd say most of the time judges do the right thing, but when they don't, there's very little you can do about it."

Ahhhhh....now that might explain it. Maybe that is why Drudge doesn't have a link up on it. Drudge LOVES to be in on the action, so I was wondering what was causing him to not jump on the bandwagon. If this all falls apart, Drudge doesn't want to lose credibility for playing along like a fool. I'm not saying that Drudge has any credibility in my circle, but he gets lots of traffic.

Yeah, I love how convenient it is that this "scandal" happened just in time to take focus off Thomas, as convenient as Breitbart being in the right place at the right time to catch the infamous crotch shot, but not the tweet that showed the link to it.

Why the Right is Attacking Rep. Weiner

Interesting theory but is Breitbart that smart, informed or politically savvy? Probably not. Is Brieatbart editing videos and faking screenshots on the orders of some secret conservative cabal? Maybe but probably not. Weiner is pro Israel and fairly hawkish, just the kind of guy wingnuts might like to keep around for certain occasions but he's outspoken, socially liberal and has a D. That's enough.

Actually, I know for a fact that Andrew Breitbart is highly connected in the right wing social scene, and I don't think it's at all far-fetched that this was coordinated. I don't know for sure, of course, but the timing is awfully suspicious.

I'm slowly coming to the opinion that Breitbart's just the middle man in this. That he wasn't in this to begin with, but when the hacker practically handed him a "scandal" gift-wrapped, he couldn't pass up the opportunity. Could have been as simple as an email in his in-box, saying "Be ready to grab a screenshot from Weiner's Twitter at X:00pm."

OT: There is no, repeat no, racism at World net Daily, that is just a liberal meme.

It's widely known that Obama's wife shaped his character. She was bitter with her Princeton black classmates because they were too comfortable interacting with whites. She anguished over taking on what she viewed as conservative values, i.e., "[going to] a prestigious graduate school and getting a high-paying corporate job." Maybe that's why she acts less like a first lady and more like a kennel employee.

Michelle Obama is a bitter harridan – by her own admission contemptuous of whites because she felt like a pariah at Princeton. She found fertile ground to cultivate her hatred at Sidley Austin. And there she discovered Obama, who had the genetic predisposition to embrace Leninism.

Well OK, maybe there is just a little bit...

The funny thing is, I couldn't care less about the number of birthday's I've got under my belt. I mean, I'm as sexy as I ever was, if you could see me, you'd agree.

However, various joints within my body insist on reminding me I'm not in my twenties anymore. It's only a matter of time before certain vital organs join their cause.

If he is in fact Pro-Israel and hawkish, I wouldn't characterize him as being on the left of the left wing. Sounds more moderately grounded to me.

BUT! I am just now learning about the guy, so my assessment of him may be much more ignorant than most.

One can be very leftist on social and economic issues, heck even be a real socialist (unlike the president ;) while still supporting things like Israel, the military, 2nd amendment, etc.

Liberals raise non-issues, everyone yawns. Conservatives raise non-issues, everyone freaks the hell out. Liberals raise important issues, conservatives hack into their Twitter accounts and create non-issues for distraction. Everyone freaks the hell out.

I'm not freaked out, but I do hope the online impersonators who (apparently?) sent an obscene image to a young woman get caught and hopefully prosecuted. If they can't be prosecuted, I hope at least their identities are exposed. I have two high-schoolers who think I'm totally lame because I won't let them follow bands or other things on twitter....but this kind of stuff does piss me off.

A young student was harassed and sent an unpleasant picture for what? Following a politician on twitter? By people who probably see themselves as defenders of "traditional family values" or "real American patriotism" or whatever.

Charles the only thing that makes your scenario unbelievable is Weiner has not asked for any investigation to find the hacker. Instead he seems to just want things to "move on."

115 wiffersnapper  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 7:27:49am

It's really kinda funny. Republicans make Weiner-Wiener jokes, and Democrats make Boehner-Boner jokes.

Also, the right-wing sexual innuendos coming out of "Weinergate" seems very hypocritical with all the sexual scandals that have plagued the GOP leaders over the years.

116 Girl with a Pearl Earring  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 7:34:11am

re: #114 scogind

Weiner unfortunately did himself no favors with that testy interview. He has also retained counsel. So I ask: If someone has committed a crime against you do you shop for a good defense attorney or someone with the connections to start a criminal investigation? Now which did Wiener do?

117 Opal  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 7:36:31am

This morning Luke Russert on MSNBC provided a short report on Jansing & Co. that basically also agrees that Weiner has a problem with young girls. He said that there will be more to this story forthcoming, and that Weiner, by not asking for a law enforcement investigation, has basically imperiled his political career. Oh...and Drudge Report is still not linking to reports about this.

What a ridiculous right wing talking point. Yes, you do consult a lawyer.

Good grief. This is what passes for critical thinking among wingnuts.

Because Andrew Breitbart told you?

121 Charles Johnson  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 8:59:10am

Next they'll be making a big deal that Weiner said "prank" instead of "hack" in one sentence.

Oh, wait. They already used that one.

122 scogind  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 9:59:40am

re: #120 Charles

No, because it wasn't mentioned in your scenario was it?

Here's a scenario...someone hacks into your private account and makes lewd posts to people in your account. That someone is out to get you because of your beliefs/actions. Everyone in the world sees this and displays disgust, you say, "my account was hacked into, it happens, let's move on." You hire an attorney!

YOU HIRE AN ATTORNEY!

I'd like to see you keep those blinders on when a similar scenario happens to someone other than a Democrat.

re: #124 Obdicut

If this had happened to me, I would contact the authorities and try my best to get them to conduct an investigation to find out who did this. I would not hire an attorney unless I was being accused of doing something illegal, or had done something illegal.
