Video: Rep. Weiner on CNN

‘I did not send that picture’
Politics • Views: 35,120

Here’s the video of Rep. Anthony Weiner’s interview with Wolf Blitzer of CNN. I think he does a very good job of defending himself against an increasingly predatory media; he says very clearly that he did not post the photo and did not send the tweet.

Notice how Wolf Blitzer keeps yanking out the photo. At one point Weiner says, “I appreciate you continuing to flash that at me.”

After today’s revelation about how easy it is to upload photos to anyone’s yfrog account and automatically have a tweet posted, without even requiring a password, I believe him.

The media just wants to relive the glory days of Clinton, when they got to speculate at length about the presidential penis.

In related news, the GOP wants to default on it's debts to demonstrate it's adherence to fiscal fealty, Osama is still dead and I wish my boxer briefs bulged like those!

the ryan plan is killing the republicans, and they're desperately launching a sleaze attack and hoping it will stick

expect more

the thing that makes me ill is to see how eagerly blitzer and other non-fox reporters comply and push this non-story really hard

I also think he's being overly gracious and generous about this incident. He doesn't want to send some douche to jail and ruin someone's life over a stupid stunt. I don't think I'd be so kind.

He handled it well. He's making the best of a no-win situation.

As he made Blitzer look every bit the ass he is.

This is more about Clarence Thomas that Paul Ryan, IMO.

I saw the interview earlier.

I don't believe for one minute he sent the photo.

Is there more to the story? Maybe.

8 wrenchwench  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 4:50:28pm

Apparently he's been dealing with jokes on his name for about 45 years. No wonder he doesn't think it's a big deal.

9 jaunte  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 4:50:40pm

Blitzer should know that Capitol Police are too busy for this, they're investigating top official Clement Okon who has charge of a transaction of great magnitude, in excess and over-invoiced funds consolidated in a Central Bank of Nigeria account ready for an overseas partner to receive 20% of said funds for courtesy of handling.

It's somewhat shrewd in the long run. If it turns out that it is a photo of him, say taken surreptitiously at the gym, then any lawsuit he ends up filing over the matter gets real teeth.

13 Simply Sarah  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 4:56:42pm

Damn it. I hate to post something off topic so soon, but apparently I spoke too soon about my parents being out of the path of the tornadoes in Springfield. Found out they came home to find the oak in the front yard laying through the middle of what had been my brother's room. They're OK and so is the dog, but the house is totally exposed to the elements. And the news seem to be talking about the weather there still being nasty. Again, damn it.

Because it might be a pic of him from the gym, or a crazy party in college, or maybe he took it to email to himself for a morale booster during those long nights at the office. Who knows?

I really don't care. If he didn't send it-- and it seems almost certain he didn't-- there is no issue.

I think he's simply trying to be as careful as possible, because he knows it could be an altered photo or one that was taken at an unguarded moment -- say, in a gym. And if he comes out and says "absolutely not me" and then it turns out to be a photo he didn't know about, he'll get clobbered.

Massachusetts. And I honestly don't know. I'm not a homeowner, so I haven't done much research on what is and isn't covered by it. I think that when a microburst caused another tree to crush the fence between us and our neighbor years ago, it was covered. I don't know if this is any different.

You really think that Weiner would be that considerate with someone who has derailed the national conversation, damaged the perception of his character, damaged the perception of a young women's character and potentially damaged his marriage?

I think a more plausible explanation is that he has something to hide.

I realise that Breitbart and others are frothing at the mouth with this story, but that doesn't mean there isn't some truth in it.

Its a little bizarre to see the Weiner apologists continually change the story as to what happened.
First, the photo was never sent; it was a photoshoped image!
Second, the photo was sent, but Weiner's Facebook/Twitter/Yfrog was hacked
Third, someone sent in a Yfrog photo in way that appeared as though it were from him.

I'm uncomfortable with any form of reasoning that assumes the conclusion and then searches for the grounds to get there.

My guess: He sent the photo while drunk and horny (I believe it was nearly midnight), intending it to be private. The end.

Maybe? I really don't know. I don't go back to my crotch-shots to relive old memories.

I really don't understand why this part of his explanation is what we're focusing on.

As I asked earlier:

Is it outside the realm of possibility that this is cropped from a much larger, full-body, shot?

I would never say "I believe him" or not at this point.

I don't know the guy personally, and I'd never heard of him until 3 days ago. It entirely possible it was a smear, and also possible that he sends photos of his junk to women and accidentally made this one more public
than he wanted it to be.

Wouldn't be the first time a man in power underestimated his vulnerability.

91 Alexzander  Wed, Jun 1, 2011 5:28:44pm

re: #62 Obdicut

What evidence would that be?

I dont think there is any definitive evidence either way at this point. Here are some issues that make me suspicious however:

1. Weiner's nonchalant attitude towards the situation. To me this just doesn't make sense, unless he knows what happened and just wants it to go away.
This includes his tweet joking about being #hacked, his tweet hiring of a lawyer instead of requesting the FBI, and his refusal to say that the photo isn't of him.

2. Of his 200 followers, the lady in question was one. She had made the joking tweet about being his boyfriend. The evening of the infamous wiener photo, he had used the strange hashtag #thats545inseattleithink which the lady in question then retweeted, as if it were meant for her.

Of course this isn't definitive, but it is at least grounds to be suspicious. I could be wrong.

A conspiracy can be of one, as in "He was conspiring to ruin Weiner's reputation." I was using the phrase to connote both the nefarious plotting, performed in a way so as to be invisible to the general public. It is also in my opinion, a less plausible scenario than the straight forward version: Person X accidentally sent private message publicly.

As for 'evidence', of which non is definitive, but at least suggestive:

1. A photo appeared in Weiner's twitter feed directed at a girl he followed.

2. Weiner's nonchalant attitude towards the situation. To me this just doesn't make sense, unless he knows what happened and just wants it to go away.

Dropped in here for a minute to read some amusing conversation and saw your tornado post. Speaking as a person that lost her house to a tornado, they will pay. Try to make a list of your contents or if you have any pics that would be great. Surprisingly the insurance company gets there pretty fast. Mine was the May 3, 1999 tornado in Oklahoma and damage was miles long and a lot of devastation. But if your area was contained to a small area, don't be surprised to see them tomorrow. Usually they get the blue tarp squad out there fast to contain the damage. Good luck.

I agree it's entirely possible that he sent the picture. It's certainly within the realm of possibility. But given that it's been demonstrated that it would be relatively trivial for someone else to send it in his Twitter stream, and since the weirdo who 'broke' the story is obsessed with Weiner and strangely predicted a sex scandal before this happened, I'm not sure why you're content with an explanation that doesn't take that into account.

Why does your evidence consist primarily of Weiner's motives, when there are others whose motives should also be examined, as well as technical points that not only present possibilities, but coupled with the various motives, and Weiner's own answers, suggests the evidence is past the 50% mark.

Breitbart has 'conspired' before to damage others' credibility.

re: #99 austin_blue

My goodness, people. Please go see the Jon Stewart video, It's a riot. Go read how anyone can insert a photo into Yfrog and auto-tweet it. Read the story of the young woman who says the photo came not from the Rep but from a creepy stalker. Also, ask yourself just how The Most Trusted Name in On-line News (heh!) was able to grab something that was "quickly removed" from Twitter.

What timing! It's almost like someone who was out strolling through the Intrawebs Knew It Would Be There!

Shocka!!

I know, let's blame the victims!!!

Jeebus.

I watched Stewart...last night anyway. It was hilarious.

Point is, I would never vouche for some guy whom I'd never heard of until 3
days ago. I know nothing of his character.

Could be be a smear job. Could be something Weiner did to himself. Could be a combination of both if it's actually a photo of him.

I'll leave the second hand "certainties" to Nancy Grace

re: #143 Alexzander

So doesn't the fact that he was telling her when he would be on TV at least weigh in favour of the narrative that he may also have been sending private messages with her, and also possibly one mistaken public message?

I agree however, that my theory here doesn't account for the creepy stalker guy. Not sure what to make of that; when he said he welcomed the FBI to look at his computer/IP history, I thought that sounded pretty safe. But if he did it from some kind of other device, who knows.

He wasn't telling her anything:

BLITZER: So here's what raised some suspicion. Back on May 27th, you tweeted this, you were about to be on "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC. You said, "Heading to 30 Rock to chat with Rachel at 9:00." And then you said, "That's 5:45 in Seattle, I think. " The woman in question here is in Seattle.

WEINER: Right. I had tweeted previously - I know, it's a terrible coincidence and that's all it is. And frankly, I didn't even know the girl was in Seattle from her feed. Look, let me say this. In the past on my Twitter feed, I had done a similar joke about other cities.

BLITZER: Why Seattle?

WEINER: It was pure, pure coincidence. I have no idea.
You know, part of the Twitter ethos is they're playful, dopey things. I don't think it was 5:45 in Seattle.

9 is 6 in Seattle, so unless he's telling her to wait by the TV for 15 minutes before Rachel's show starts it's probably an running gag of his.

A couple of years ago, I stopped to watch Rep. Weiner outside of City Hall (which is where he really wants to be) campaigning against Bloomberg. I remember thinking he seemed like throwback to a previous century; a sort of New York bully pol.

Weiner has always been combative with the press and his opponents (his Twitter account was never very civil, if you took a look). I don't see a problem with the press scrutinizing this and asking for Rep. Weiner to offer clear answers -- rather than use lawyerly speak. But, I also agree that anyone Brietbart goes after these days deserves the benefit of independent verification...but is that not the press's job? especially in looking at our elected officials?

It's looking increasingly as if the GOP's Waterloo is approaching... so stories are popping on Bachmann.

A look at her religiosity from Mother Jones today: Does Michele Bachmann Think the Apocalypse is Imminent?

Almost immediately after President Obama's recent Middle East address, in which he reaffirmed his administration's commitment to a two-state solution in Israel, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R–Minn.) sprang into action. Blasting the president's "shocking display of betrayal towards our ally," the tea party icon attacked the speech (which did not actually represent a policy shift) in robocalls and online ads that appeared the key primary states of Iowa, South Carolina, and New Hampshire.

Bachmann's support for Israel isn't simply an embrace of an ally in a historically volatile region; it's rooted in biblical prophecy. As Bachmann explained in a 2010 speech, she believes that if the United States turns its back on Israel, "a curse" will be placed on the land. As proof, she cited Genesis 12:3, in which God says to Abraham, "The one who curses you I will curse." It was an uncommonly explicit blurring of policy and theology from a prominent politician—but for Bachmann, who's expected to formally enter the presidential race in the coming weeks, it was hardly an isolated incident.

Over the last decade, Bachmann has enjoyed an on-again off-again relationship with Olive Tree Ministries, an evangelical Christian organization dedicated to "interpreting current events from a Biblical perspective." Bachmann has appeared on Understanding the Times, the radio program hosted by Olive Tree's founder Jan Markell, at least half a dozen times, discussing topics like gay marriage, the war on terror, and biblical prophecy. As she told Markell in 2004, "We're seeing the fulfillment of the Book of Judges here in our own time, where every man is doing that which is right in his own eyes—in other words, anarchy."

His caginess is a mimic of the President's anti-birther strategy. He'll let the craziness build for a long while, then put it all out on C-SPAN. "See, that's not my apparatus."

A bit late to the party but, does Weiner have any reason to run in Arizona?

Ah, there we go. Square brackets, not HTML ones. Apologies for posting this again, but just to make sure I'm getting the code right:

Ron Paul believes in absolute rights, as far as i can tell. Here's the catch: abolishing Jim Crow as a federal mandate and keeping it de facto would allow states to determine their ability to succeed or fail in a free market system. While i think it is abhorrent to discriminate, I understand what he is saying and it makes perfect sense.

It's looking increasingly as if the GOP's Waterloo is approaching... so stories are popping on Bachmann.

A look at her religiosity from Mother Jones today: Does Michele Bachmann Think the Apocalypse is Imminent?

Recommend reading the whole thing.

Interesting quote, if you consider what phrase is always conjoined with the line in Judges about every man doing what was right in his own eyes.

Does Michelle think she can help with that?

This mare: #4 Killgore Trout

I also think he's being overly gracious and generous about this incident. He doesn't want to send some douche to jail and ruin someone's life over a stupid stunt. I don't think I'd be so kind.

re: #22 Killgore Trout

That does seem odd to me too. It might be a real pic the wingnuts found somehow. It should be pretty easy to deny if it's not him. That doesn't make much sense to me either.

re: #81 Charles

I do believe him. I can't say I'd be shocked to find out that he really did send the pic (nothing shocks me when it comes to politicians), but the evidence we have so far points toward a dirty trick intended to create exactly this kind of media frenzy.

I started out believing him, but I can't understand why he doesn't just ask Twitter to confirm his story, and why he hasn't involved the police.

Who says Weiner or his staff hasn't been talking to the authorities? I don't know that and neither do you or anyone else; the "if he's innocent, he's got nothing to hide" shit pisses me off.

Who says Weiner or his staff hasn't been talking to the authorities? I don't know that and neither do you or anyone else; the "if he's innocent, he's got nothing to hide" shit pisses me off.

If he has been been talking to the authorities, why won't he say that?

This article in Slate says he's hired private investigators, and he said that he did that, but he simply refused to say one way or the other whether he talked to police:

Weiner hasn't done much to settle the issue. Right after the photo went up, he (or someone in his office) removed the tweet and erased his account on Yfrog, the photo service used to post the picture. Weiner made light of the incident in a follow-up tweet: "Tivo shot. FB hacked. Is my blender gonna attack me next? #TheToasterIsVeryLoyal." But the questions kept coming: Why hadn't he reported the incident to law enforcement? Did he know the woman, Gennette Cordova? How could someone hijack his account? On Tuesday, he held a press conference where he refused to say whether the photo depicted him or whether he posted it. On Wednesday, he told NBC he couldn't say "with certitude" that it's not him in the picture. He now says he's hired a private security firm to investigate the incident.

I'm a liberal and I really want to believe him, but his actions don't seem to make sense to me if his story is true. I would love for Breitbart to be caught red-handed hyping a hoax.

Why Did More Than 1,000 People Die After Police Subdued Them With Force That Isn’t Meant to Kill? An investigation led by The Associated Press has found that, over a decade, more than 1,000 people died after police subdued them through physical holds, stun guns, body blows and other force not intended to be lethal.
