So the federal government spending over 20% of GDP amounts to socialism? Well, federal government spending under Reagan was 22% of GDP.

Does Israel feel greater peace? No ... Romney, 64, said that Obama doesn't have a foreign policy, and worse than that, he "goes around apologizing for America."

"I don't apologize for America," Romney said in the interview. "I'm proud of America."

Hamas says Egypt's restrictions on Rafah 'unjustified'

Salameh Baraka, director of the border crossing police force in the Gaza Strip, denounced the restrictions as unreasonable and a setback and called on the Egyptian government to reconsider its move.

He said that the Egyptians have decided to limit the number of Palestinian travelers to 350-400 each day.

“The Egyptian decision came as a surprise to us,” Baraka said. “It’s completely unjustified, especially in wake of the joy on both sides of the border at the reopening of the Rafah terminal.”

Romney is not a stupid man; nor is he, as best one can tell, temperamentally an extremist. So he has to know that he’s talking total nonsense. The only major expansion of the state Obama is pursuing is a health care plan that is, ahem, essentially identical to what Romney did in Massachusetts.

Back in 1974 I was a foreign exchange student in Leningrad (thanks to Nixon and Detent). In the water system in Leningrad there was an amoeba that caused dissentary. I was struck ill on a train ride from Leningrad to Moscow and headed to the "vania".....bathroom car. Once inside, there was simply a standpipe in the middle of the floor and that was all and when you looked into it you could see the track whizzing by underneath. Next to it was a roll of "toliet" paper that had the consistancy of that brown paper you find in school bathrooms that you was your hands with and there was honestly visible wood splinters it it. As you can tell, this was one of my lasting memories of the old Soviet Union.

It looks like Microsoft is jumping on the "Tablet-PC" UI with the Windows 8 operating system, even for the desktop environment.

Apple is starting down this path with the stages of integration between the iPad and OSX.
On the Linux side, both GNOME 3.0 and Unity are specifically designed for tablet environments, and KDE is working in the same direction with their upcoming 5.0 release.

The problem is, that people who work specifically in a desktop environment find the clutter, and general resource overhead that these little eye-candy toys generate to be completely counterproductive to productivity. Turn off all the stupid little gadgets, let me monitor running apps thru a common non-intrusive system tray, and let me customize the desktop to the way I want it to look, and I'll be happy.

Gov. Christie Thinks A Family Making $6,000 A Year Is Too Rich To Qualify For Medicaid

Christie has proposed cutting Medicaid eligibility to absurdly low levels: from the current maximum income of $24,645 to $5,317 a year for a family of three. Apparently, the governor believes a family of three making $6,000 a year is simply too rich to receive Medicaid.

Yikes

I see all the commercials for the "smartphones" and the "smartpads" especially the way they like to show all the different finger flicks you have to learn in order to resize windows, open a new window, line up your windows, enlarge a photo, crop a photo. Each one is a different type of finger flick apparently, like sign language for the deaf. Finger flicks for the iPad.

I also found out from my cell phone provider, that if I get a "smartphone" at their "introductory" cheap price, they will add $30/month to my service bill.

So the federal government spending over 20% of GDP amounts to socialism? Well, federal government spending under Reagan was 22% of GDP.

"Socialism" and "free market capitalism" are both absolutist terms that don't really apply in any real way to any functioning economy in the real world. In my opinion, we should always be thinking in terms of where in the spectrum we lie rather than an either/or.

What has the freemarket done when it comes to distributing healthcare to make me think it belongs there?

Sometimes a government takeover of a service is a good thing.

Would you want to have America be defended by free market mercenaries?

Well it worked out so well for Rome at the end I don't see why not.

///

(Please note that we are already using mercenaries to protect government officials in many countries, they are considerably more expensive in the short term than the Diplomatic Protection Service run by the State Department is and also considerably less professional. However they have the advantage of not being government employees and not getting federal pensions and benefits. Besides which, and probably most enlightening, they are mostly "off the books" for the State Department since their services are billed to whichever government agency requires their protection. Also it is an almost oversight free way to divert hundreds of millions in federal spending to private enterprise, the...uhh... "Free Market." )
