Sarah Palin Stands by Mangled Paul Revere Story: It Was a ‘Gotcha Question’

Palin doubles down on stupid
Wingnuts • Views: 51,297

So there she is, ridin’ around the country in a bus decorated with the US flag and the Constitution and her name, and the flag, and stuff, and here comes that ol’ lamestream media again with those “shout-out gotcha questions” — like, “Hey Sarah, remember Paul Revere?”

“Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you’re not gonna succeed. You’re not gonna take American arms. You are not gonna beat our own well-armed, uh, persons, uh, individual, private militia that we have. He did warn the British! And, in a shout-out, gotcha type o’ question that was asked of me, I answered candidly, and. I know my American history!”

Next gotcha question: “Hey Sarah, what’s with the weird hand gestures?”

It is the anti-intellectual lobby that supports this: we don't need historical/scientific facts, we just need a sound theology/ideology to guide us to greatness.

How can she claim that part of "his ride" was to warn the British of anything? Is she really claiming that he got captured on purpose???

Facts matter.

Paul Revere's (and William Dawes') ride was important. It was successful, in that the militiamen in Concord and Lexington were warned in time, and that John Hanock and Sam Adams were not arrested.

Longfellow's poem is stirring and dramatic, but it takes literary license.

All the same, I'm not sure what she's saying.

19 Obdicut  Sun, Jun 5, 2011 10:01:24am

The frustrating part is that she could make her labored 'guns rights' argument without resorting to distortion and lying.

The colonists really did store up arms and other military equipment-- like harnesses and tack and food-- and hide it from the Regulars. That really happened. But they didn't stop the Regulars from taking arms at Lexington/Concord. The British searched out and destroyed a few arms, but most had been hidden already.

It was very important for the US revolution that we had armed militias. It was vital. It was also vital that they were organized, often made up of members of the local government. When it came to private weapons, for example, in New York the colonists gave up private arms for the right of free passage out of New York, since that was much more important to them than the guns themselves.

What that has to do with what the US needs right now, of course, is another question. What analogy does Palin think there is? We're not currently a colony of Britain or anywhere else.

Frankly, Palin's whole speech sounds a little Kenyan and anti-colonial.

Washington's Continental Army was a highly disciplined regular force even by the standards of the time. He even had the dubious services of actual Prussian drill sergeants (brought in by Baron von Steuben) to get the recruits in line.

I also find it jaw-droppingly astonishing to hear her claim that she's not on a publicity tour, calling it a "celebrate America" tour or some such. Then her kid complains about reporters ruining her vacation. WTF? I mean every family goes on vacation traveling around in a circus bus that says Hey Look At Me! while invading other people's events to take as much of the attention away from them and direct it towards her as she can. But publicity tour? Who me?

51 William Barnett-Lewis  Sun, Jun 5, 2011 10:13:59am

I said this when the story first broke and I think it's important to state again that the whole militia mythos at the core of this fantasy of history was a very dangerous one. It very nearly lost us all of our early wars though we were lucky enough to get a regular army raised each time in the nick of time.

But that's just it, the whole militia concept, that we could do without a standing Army and defend our nation simply with freemen grabbing a rifle off the wall and marching to the enemy, was a conspicuous failure. It got lots of men slaughtered in the Revolution, 1812, during various engagements of the early Indian Wars (those east of the Mississippi) and during the early part of the Civil War. The myth of the brave minutemen remains strong in certain quarters (see the "Appleseed" rife trainings) but it is myth nonetheless. The volunteers of the Civil War began the process of change from Militia to the modern National Guard because they were given at least some real training before being fed into the meat grinder. This was the model followed by the conscript armies of the US from WWI through Vietnam and, while decidely mixed, the results were still superior to those of the militias.

The only real impact the militia has anymore is that the 2nd Amendment was written around that mythos and there are a whole lot of people who thing they can defend themselves against the government with man portable arms or that the idea of a well regulated militia includes the carrying of concealed weapons (the founding fathers would have only expected criminals to want to do that).

Washington considered the militias to be extremely unreliable and pressed hard, during the Revolution, to keep the numbers in the regular army up and to finance that instead of individual state militias.

I think it would be cool if the lovely Sarah could team up with the President for a Goodwill tour. Yeah, that's it. Unity. We can come together. President Obama could guide Sarah Palin through all 57 states.

At least Obama didn't come out the next day and insist there actually were 57 states.

I think I've figured out the definition of liberal bias: Noticing a Republican said something false, ignorant or crazy, quoting them accurately and then acting as if what they said meant something.

I have also figures out the definition of a gotcha question: Asking a Republican a question that gives them the opportunity to say something false, ignorant or crazy.

Palin isn't a politician, she's a celebrity. She doesn't have constituents, she has fans. Her fans don't require her to be accountable for anything. She could run over a five year old with her bus and her fans would blame the kid for not looking both ways before he crossed the damn streets. The word fan comes from the word fanatic and that really says it all.

Yes, very interesting. I suppose an increase in revisions on a web page for a recently newsworthy subject is to be assumed. There seems to be some sticking to protocols by the 'Wikipedians' but I'm wondering if some partisans tried fudgering the narrative to cover for the Lady Mangler. #AccordingToPalin: 'The Daily Show' Starts Palin Hashtag Game On Twitter

It's too bad "The Daily Show" is on hiatus until Monday night. Just a few hours ago, Sarah Palin was videotaped explaining Paul Revere's significance in history and it couldn't have been funnier. Since they're not putting together a show tonight, the staff did the next best thing and began tweeting their own historical facts the way they think Palin would interpret them.

We've selected our favorite #AccordingToPalin tweets so far, including @TheDailyShow's first few. Tweet your own using the hashtag (or submit it below) and see if it makes it into our slideshow!

She was way off-base on the Statue of Liberty, too.

"It is of course the symbol for Americans to be reminded of other countries, because this was gifted us of course by the French, other countries, warning us to never make the mistakes that some of them had made, this is a symbol, a reminder of what what it is that we can do right in the name of freedom. And that's what I appreciate about the Statue of Liberty."

Later, she went on to talk about why the Dream Act is a such a bad policy idea, that we don't want to be giving citizenship to people who don't stand in line.

(here's the part she apparently missed:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed
to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Or, y'know, maybe I have it wrong, maybe there's some alternative tea-party way to interpret that bit.
