‘If you mention Sarah Palin, you’re doing it wrong’

Now posted at the discussion page for the Paul Revere entry at Wikipedia: Sarah Palin’s Army Needs to Go Away.

I would strongly suggest locking this page until the Palin controversy blows over and her supporters lose interest in trying to rewrite the page to conform with her erroneous version of Revere’s ride. Black Max (talk) 22:39, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Black Max

Doesn’t look too bad right at this moment. It has been permanently semiprotected since november as it stands (eeeuw). Should that prove to be insufficient, we can always raise the protection level later. Hopefully we can actually unprotect in a few days. —Kim Bruning (talk) 23:17, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Agreed. Anyone editing the page to conform to Sarah’s version of events should be warned or banned. The page really should be locked. This is a key moment in US history, and people are tweaking it to advance the reputation of a possible presidential candidate. 98.110.177.20 (talk) 23:41, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Well, try to edit the article right now, and see what happens. ;-) When you get back to this talk page, note that we’re happy to incorporate any suggestions you might have, provided that they are encyclopedic, and you can back them up with sources. —Kim Bruning (talk) 23:58, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

History is in the mind of the beholder according to political revisionists.

I'm reminded of when Stephen Colbert told the Colbert nation to edit wikipedia so that the number of Elephants was going up... the GOP needs to stop taking satirical mockeries of their positions as a road map for the future.

Sarah Palin's detractors: ask her "gotcha" questions such as which periodicals she reads.

Sarah Palin's fans: literally attempt to re-write history to conform to her flubs.

From the Talk page for Sarah Palin:

Palin's take on Paul Revere method of rousing those colonists

There should be some mention in this article about Sarah Palin's remarks about the midnight ride of Paul Revere on June 3, 2011. There are numerous reliable sources quoting the remark in which she said that Revere rang bells to alert slumbering colonists, such as here and here and even a YouTube video.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 17:11, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
“ He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms, uh, by ringing those bells, and um, makin' sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be sure and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed." -- Sarah Palin, June 2011 ”

Well, I'm not at all sure, by your post, as to what the significance of the statement is. It is quite well documented that Paul Revere would ride into a town and go straight to the local militia leader's house, who would then sound the alarm by shooting guns and ringing the local church bells. Then Revere would ride off to the next town, while other riders were sent off in other directions. I'm not sure where you're getting the idea of a bicycle bell. Zaereth (talk) 19:55, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Zaereth - There is no significance in the Tomsulcer post. He is just showing his left/lib leaning bias the way Anthony Weiner showed his tweeter photo. So much desperation and fear that they need to resort to this type of hack commentary. Mk 71.228.77.211 (talk) 20:18, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

[[1]] says the Lexington church bell was tolled. The bell was tolled to alert the colonists and not to scare the British, who were quite spooked before they reached Concord Bridge. Collect (talk) 21:21, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

I decided not to even try to refute the idiotic anti-historical claims coming out of the right wing blogs -- there's no point. They don't care about facts. Anyone who knows the history knows she was ridiculously off-base, and anyone who thinks Palin is the GOP's savior will never admit she was wrong.

First man ‘functionally cured’ of HIV

Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.)

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away.

"He has no replicating virus and he isn't taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV," his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. "It makes me very happy," he says of the incredible cure.

I'm going to have to read his previous comments because this guy doesn't make sense to me. On his page he seems to mock Palin's interpretation of events.

Look what he just posted on the wiki talk page;

According to Palin's version, Revere rode through Boston proclaiming to the British "The Americans are coming! The Americans are coming!" while ringing bells (most likely bicycle-sized; church bells too heavy except for really stud-like horses) and shooting and making a ruckus. The British, spooked, vacated for Lexington and Concord where SURPRISE Americans were waiting in ambush. And, as Palin noted: " and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed." It's history.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 00:54, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

I have an anecdote about that.

During the last semester of High School, I was Pro-Obama, while a close friend was Pro-McCain (this was during the primaries). We had our fair share of heated discussions. However, some nitwit would in the middle of debates would interject "Ron Paul Revolution" or something like that.

At which point we would both tell him to stop, and that he was an idiot. I usually was the less tactful one (STFU wasn't uncommon out of my yap.)

37 Kronocide  Sun, Jun 5, 2011 6:08:17pm

I just followed the 'proof' that Palin has her history right.

She said “He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms uh by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free and we were going to be armed.”

This is the 'proof' that she was right and giving the lamestream media a history lesson, from a letter from Revere:

I told him; and aded, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River, and that There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.

So she said 'the British were warned that they weren't going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells...' was supported by '...there would be 500 Americans there...'

Pathetic. This final gem from Conservatives4Palin's resounding proof that Sarah was right:

There were no claims by Governor Palin that Paul Revere’s ride had anything to do with the 2nd Amendment as some spuriously claim. She simply indicated the immediate concern of Revere and the colonists. It appears that the media once again fail to grasp the history of our Founding again.

MegaStrawman. She never discussed the 2nd Amendment but if you watched her video and think she wasn't ladling her comments with 2nd Amendment virtue in mind you're ignorant or lying.

Woot! Found what I was talking about:

CCR5-Δ32 (or CCR5-D32 or CCR5 delta 32) is a genetic variant of CCR5.[6][7]

CCR5-Δ32 is a deletion mutation of a gene that has a specific impact on the function of T cells[citation needed]. At least one copy of CCR5-Δ32 is found in about 10% of people of Northern Europe and in those of Northern European descent. It has been hypothesized that this allele was favored by natural selection during the Black Death. This coalescence date is contradicted by purported evidence of CCR5-Δ32 in Bronze Age samples, at levels comparable to the modern European population.[8] Smallpox may be another candidate for the high level of the mutation in the European population.[6]

It's just right over the border." --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Sept. 24, 2008

Bashar Assad's government makes a new attempt to divert its public's attention towards Israel:

Deadly clashes at Syrian border on Mideast war anniversary

Golan Heights (CNN) -- Israeli troops fired on protesters trying to cross the fortified border between Syria and the occupied Golan Heights on Sunday, with Syrian authorities reporting more than a dozen dead and hundreds wounded.

The protests came on the anniversary of the 1967 Middle East War, when Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria. The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately confirm any casualties, though a spokeswoman said that Israeli troops used tear gas and live ammunition on members of an "angered mob."

"We warned them verbally (and) with warning shots into the air," Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich told CNN. "And when these two options failed, we had to open fire selectively into the area, and this actually stopped those Syrians from reaching the Israeli-Syrian fence."

The Syrian state news agency said 25 people were killed and more than 350 wounded in the protests, which continued past nightfall. Medics could be seen carrying the wounded to vehicles and driving them away from the border.

A spokesman for U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the violence and urged restraint.

"The events of today and of 15 May on the Golan put the long-held cease-fire in jeopardy. The Secretary-General calls for maximum restraint on all sides and strict observance of international humanitarian law to ensure protection of civilians," he said.

As usual, the UN is missing the point, likely on purpose. Syria is orchestrating these provocations to distract its public from Assad's murderous regime, which has killed over 100 people in the last couple days.

More funny comments from the wikipedia page;

Sarah Palin is intent on destroying wikipedia, isn't she? First we had huge wars over the blood libel article, now this. But Obama's supporters do not support claim that there are 57 states! Amazing!--Milowent • talkblp-r 01:15, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Bottom Line: YOU CANNOT TWIST FACTS TO MAKE SOMEONE LOOK BETTER!! Palin. Was. Wrong. You do NOT get to rewrite encyclopedia articles to fit her mistake. I can't believe that we are even having this conversation. What is this, North Korea? SemDem (talk) 01:36, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

We can more accurately say the Palinistas have invaded the Revere Talk page. Funny that the updates trying to quote the letter from Revere to back her story up show up from non registered users (only show IP).

Which probably means;

a) The Palin fans never edited a wikipedia article before (thus have no login)
b) They're too embarrassed to reveal their identities

Same thing when I tried to correct a page on Bush and Katrina after an actual quote from a reliable source which was in Bush’s favor was removed…overnight after I used it on a forum.

Wiki joins the same club as Media Matters, FactCheck, Snopes, etc. The liberal left is overtaking all media sources to holler for facts to back up a conservative point, but have made sure that the web is scrubbed of those very points, with Media Matters, et al reigning as king of what was “supposedly said.”

It smells like it, though. Everything about these border incursions screams 'diversion', an attempt to divert attention away from the far greater killing going on inside Syria. I bet the number of deaths isn't half what the Syrians are saying it is.

Israel needs to stand firm and continue shooting as a last resort. Because you may be certain that if any of those Arabs actually get right next to an Israeli their 'non-violence' will disappear in a micro-second, replaced by a hateful determination to kill.

"All of them"

As an aside, why is it even news anymore when Palin fucks up facts, on any subject?

It's linked to the unwarranted respect she gets from a sizable portion of US and Canadian public. Every time she validates the idea she's an idiot, the astonishment that there are really humans out there who believe she's brilliant gives us a little thrill of comedy.

Because it is so absurd she has any supporters. Who would believe confirmation bias has such a strong pull.

He's actually been happily married his entire music career. In his heyday his wife was never seen, in order to make him seem more 'available', but he never partook of the groupies.

Part of the purpose of the ride was to warn the British that colonists would exercise their gun rights.

So what gun rights might those be, considering that Paul Revere's ride was in 1775, and the Right to Bear Arms was adopted in 1971?

To put it bluntly: some people at Wikipedia are idiots, and I don't mean Palin fans.

Contrary to what has been posted here, if you look at the contributions of the "Palin fan" who added the material to the Paul Revere article, you will discover that 1) he describes the Palin comment as a "gaffe" (indicating that he is not, as implied both here and in some Wikipedia comments, a Palin fan who added it because he actually believes it to be true), and 2) he was actually trolling based on Wikipedia's reliable sources policy (claiming that Palin is a reliable source and the comment has to be added without Wikipedia considering whether it's true or false).

You messed up, LGF. You not only got trolled, it's already on Slashdot and people will probably be believing you until the end of time, because hardly anyone does the research needed to verify whether outrageous claims are true. The meme "Palin fans are so stupid that they believe her mistakes are actual history" says more about Palin opponents than Palin fans, considering its lack of truth.

184 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 8:44:58am

re: #183 arromdee

Actually, the idiot here is you, because you didn't even bother to look at that person's other posts before blathering about getting "trolled."

But this is what right wingers do -- they frantically try to spin everything. Kinda pathetic.

We had this discussion (in a civilized manner) last night. If you see that user was also trying to post on the Palin Issues article and trying to get his silly explination (about Revere riding with a bicycle bell) in that article for real. I thought the guy was making fun of Palin, but he's a bit off and actually is more serious about it.

Also the talk page on wikipedia does have more than a few people, posting over and over Revere's account of his capture as "proof" that Palin is right. Look at the Talk page, it's all there.
