Conservapedia’s Paul Revere Post Edited to Match Palin’s Botched History

You knew it would happen

Earlier today at Conservapedia (the bizarre right wing alternate universe version of Wikipedia), their post about Paul Revere disagreed with Sarah Palin, and actually got the history correct.

Well, you knew that wouldn’t last. In the last hour, someone has edited Conservapedia’s page several times to try to match Sarah Palin’s idiotically distorted version of Paul Revere’s ride: Paul Revere - Conservapedia.

The addition:

Part of the purpose of Revere’s ride was to warn the British already present in the colonies that colonists would be exercising their 2nd Amendment rights.

Which soon turned into:

Part of the purpose of the ride was to warn the British that colonists would exercise their gun rights.

What “gun rights?” When Paul Revere took his famous ride, there was no US Constitution, and no Second Amendment.

But this certainly exposes the real agenda behind Sarah Palin’s dumb comments; she was pandering to the right wing gun-loving crowd.

UPDATE at 6/5/11 7:49:19 pm

They’re editing like busy little right wing beavers tonight; “colonists would exercise their gun rights” just turned into:

…colonists would exercise their natural right to bear arms.

God wants Americans to pack heat!

Conservapedia, the conservative alternative to a liberally biased reality!

Eh, I don't think reality has a liberal bias in the case of Paul Revere. What he did with his ride was brave and honorable, that's clearly true. But Palin goofed it up and refused to admit it. That's not a liberal vs. conservative bias, that an honest people versus cultists and liars divide.

Let me ask again:

"Part of the purpose of the ride was to warn the British that colonists would exercise their gun rights. "

So what gun rights might those be, considering that Paul Revere's ride was in 1775, and the Right to Bear Arms was adopted in 1971?

It's not a liberal versus conservative thing either Dark... or at least not a "big government" versus "little government thing" it's about how some Republicans refuse to believe that they or the people they support could ever possibly be wrong and that if "reality" says otherwise than "reality" must be wrong.

I'm not saying there aren't democrats like that... but the Republicans of that particular stripe sure are making themselves easy to spot.

The Founders regarded some of the rights in the Bill of Rights as rights that people naturally should have. The Bill was intended to spell those rights out and make them part of the Constitution. In 2011, during a cross country tour to warn Americans against the dangers of [[liberalism]], [[Sarah Palin]] clarified the purpose of Paul Reveres' midnight ride to include warning the [[British]] that they could not take American's guns away. Although a controversial view, [[Sarah Palin]] successfully positioned herself to be viewed as a modern day [[Paul Revere]], warning the liberals in power who clearly want to take lawful guns away from Americans.

re: #302 C1nnabar

It seems no-one's gotten around to editing Conservapedia. Below is the current entry on Paul Revere, unchanged from Google's 5/30 cache of the same page.

Paul Revere (1734-1818) was a silversmith in colonial America who was very active in Boston-area revolutionary groups such as the Sons of Liberty. He is famous for riding from Boston to Lexington, Massachusetts with William Dawes on the night of April 18, 1775 to warn the minutemen that British troops led by General Thomas Gage were invading. Revere was captured before he could reach Concord, but managed to escape. His midnight ride was immortalized by a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.[1]

You know this is funny and all, but terribly depressing. I honestly can't remember a time when people argued so fiercely to try to defend some misstatement from a candidate before.

I mean, forget about the ridiculous explanations and blog entries, they're trying to rewrite facts to mold history around the stupidity of their favorite reality star. The guys at conservopedia, I don't think they're even doing it because of "gun rights", because they would have done it before.

I just find it hard to believe these people would go to these lengths to try to dumb down the rest of the population!

And then they claim to be patriotic?

What's more important, Paul Revere's true history and mission that night, or making sure Palin doesn't come off like a complete idiot?

"Area-Fire" weapons are those that do damage over an area, like artillery or mortars (though some examples of those are legally owned). Nukes fall into that category.

You're talking about the same class of moran that thinks that John Calvin was more important to American History than Thomas Jefferson. These people are perfectly willing to re-write history for their own agenda.

Meanwhile, France is acting like a tard:

France announces that it will stop teaching indigenous languages in schools in all of its Overseas departments and territories of France.

This is largely due to courts, as seen here.

An attempt by the French government to incorporate the independent Breton-language immersion schools (called Diwan) into the state education system was blocked by the French Constitutional Council on the grounds that, as the 1992 amendment to the Constitution of the 5th Republic states that French is the language of the Republic, no other language may be used as a language of instruction in state schools.

Their constitution needs tweaking. The Constitutional Council is taking the words of the constitution, and stretching them to stupid levels.

this isn't exactly surprising. Conservapedia also has edited Jesus' biography so that he is now Mary was not in fact an illegitimate parent, but was in fact inseminated by Charlton Heston during his appearance as Moses in an Cecile B. This is true with a lot more laws than just the 2nd Amendment, by the way. Computer technology has far outpaced the U.S. Code in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, a lot of judges (and lawmakers, for that matter) just don't understand the tech enough to make intelligent decisions on it.

Sure there can. The SR-25 is clearly a rifle, descended from the frontier rifles of those times, but far more lethal. Like any Amendment, the 2nd requires some interpretation. The isn't always entirely clear and just because some things might not be covered, such as WWII tanks and aircraft, doesn't mean they are necessarily illegal.

OK, the guy who originally was trying to edit the Paul Revere article to fit Palin's view of history was really making fun of her. He added this edit to the Palin page;

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

In 2011, Palin made a comment on television about the midnight ride of [[Paul Revere]], suggesting that Revere's warnings were not so much verbal in nature, but accomplished using [[bells]]; her remark was widely seen as a [[gaffe]] and not accepted by historians or the news media.{{cite web

Revision as of 00:45, 6 June 2011 (view source)
Tomwsulcer (talk | contribs)

Reason for edit:
(→Public image: added Revere gaffe which is relevant to Palin's image, with three references)

So it seems people weren't really trying to edit the article to modify history to her version, at least initially. After Charles much linked and tweated blog entry though is when we see people on the Talk page trying to edit this, so ironically it seems LGF kind of helped create this problem (or maybe it was going to happen anyways).

From Talk page;

Palin's take on Paul Revere method of rousing those colonists

There should be some mention in this article about Sarah Palin's remarks about the midnight ride of Paul Revere on June 3, 2011. There are numerous reliable sources quoting the remark in which she said that Revere rang bells to alert slumbering colonists, such as here and here and even a YouTube video.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 17:11, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
“ He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms, uh, by ringing those bells, and um, makin' sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be sure and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed." -- Sarah Palin, June 2011 ”

Well, I'm not at all sure, by your post, as to what the significance of the statement is. It is quite well documented that Paul Revere would ride into a town and go straight to the local militia leader's house, who would then sound the alarm by shooting guns and ringing the local church bells. Then Revere would ride off to the next town, while other riders were sent off in other directions. I'm not sure where you're getting the idea of a bicycle bell. Zaereth (talk) 19:55, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Zaereth - There is no significance in the Tomsulcer post. He is just showing his left/lib leaning bias the way Anthony Weiner showed his tweeter photo. So much desperation and fear that they need to resort to this type of hack commentary. Mk 71.228.77.211 (talk) 20:18, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

The issue I, and many others see, is the revisionist views by Sarah Palin are very far from real events and there needs to be a recognition of this fact with an entry that reflects that her comments are frequently mis-statements or out and out false. They may not have started it, but I suspect some of them amuse theselves by punking it occasionally.

Check out this entry under "Greatest Conservative Songs"

97. "YMCA" by Village People – This song praises youth activities at the Young Men's Christian Association; one of the biggest hits of alltime.

Lolz

and then there is this;

39. "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd- A song about wishing that a conservative president would return back to office.

I ask few questions because I am a careful soul. I don't like to offend and I've sometimes done that by asking one question too many. So I try to get the information I need, then stop. And I tailor 'need' narrowly.

As many friendships as I've lost by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time Dark there should be a corollary to that old saying about "better to be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt"

And it goes like this "The first step on the road to knowledge is the realization that in some way, you are a fool"

I think that the world is to big bright and beautiful for us to constrain ourselves to what we feel we "need" to know, as the more we learn about it the better our lives become in general.

Wikipedia user tomwsulcer tries to add Revere story to Palin wiki page (gets edit removed) then to wiki page "Palin Public Image";

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Gaffes
Church bells are too heavy to carry on horseback, so Revere may have used a lighter weight bell similar to a bicycle bell (see figure). Two (2) problems: (1) bicycle bells weren't invented yet (2) would they scare the horse?

The Paul Revere gaffe needs mentioning in this article. An article without any mention of it is violating WP's NPOV policy. In addition, I would like people to insert this picture in the article as well since it captures the essence of the controversy while offering a possible explanation although the explanation might involve a bit of original research (?).--Tomwsulcer (talk) 01:16, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure where, if anyplace, this gaffe should be mentioned, but I'm sure that the illustration would not help. Thanks anyway. Will Beback talk 01:26, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Charles is right, I thought this guy was making fun of Palin, but I think he honestly believes he has an explanation for what he believes is a "perceived" gaffe.

Charles you were right, you understand these nutcases better than me. I have much to learn :-)

(check out the weird image he posted with the bicycle bell trying to explain how Revere would have gone around town ringing bells!)

Yeah, but that's not my take on it. I think the founders meant it to mean rifles, muskets and pistols, not cannon.

We have a winner. Goes back to that whole militia in place of the standing army fantasy they had. The New Model Army left deep scars in their psyche. So the idea was that Farmer Snuffy would have his rifle near at all times and if the crisis came would go to town where they'd get rations & their crew served weapons (In those days, canons) from the local armory. Then they'd march off (morally superior to a standing army) to be slaughtered. This is the real origin of the 2nd Amendment.

Likewise I doubt any of the founding fathers would have approved of CCW. You want a gun, put it over your shoulder or in a holster. Only criminals would have wanted to hide a weapon.

There is no hope of arresting the GOP's media-driven spiral into socon derp-mania. I am therefore going to call the 2012 election right here: Barack Hussein Obama will be re-elected in a landslide of epic dimensions.
No Republican candidate capable of getting past the increasingly crazy and dishonest base will have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the general. There just aren't that many misinformed, superstitious, stupid, and racist people in this country.

The only question now is how the crazy-cons will react to this beat-down. Their diabolically cynical propagandists will, of course, refuse to recognize the legitimacy of Obama's second term. The liars and money-grubbers in their ranks (a significant faction) will do nothing but fume and rant, but what about the true believers?

Yeah, but the culture was different then. Nowadays, too many people would see open carry as a threat. In some ways that's sad, but it is what it is. So while the Founders wouldn't have liked CCW, its the way things need to be done today.

That's also the reason why the British Army had no permanent units larger than a regiment. Keeping the army small and decentralized was intended to prevent it from being used in someone's power play, as Oliver Cromwell had done. The New Model Army's scar was on all of English society, even across the Atlantic. It had been formed to enable Parliament to defeat a tyrannical king, but became a dictator's instrument of power.

Antarctica’s most pressing issue is its environment and how best to protect it. The major impacts on the Antarctic environment are caused by people who have never even visited it. Climate change and ozone depletion are prime examples of the way human activity elsewhere affects Antarctica. But studies have also found that lead particles from gasoline combustion are blown to Antarctica as soon as one month after they leave exhaust pipes in South America, Australia and New Zealand, and pesticide residue has been found both in seabird guano and in penguin tissues. Plastic and other rubbish washes up on Antarctica’s beaches in ever-increasing amounts.

No. I just read a lot of books and magazines on the subject. It's often useful, I've found. In the case of the lengthy Anglosphere aversion to large standing armies, it really helps to understand the foundation of that attitude. I don't know much about the English Civil War (I've only read timelines for it, except for the pivotal battle of Nasby, which I read a detailed article about) but I know enough about how the New Model Army was formed and what it became it understand how its legacy loomed in both the British and American mind for centuries thereafter.

If this was mathematics instead of history, they would basically have an answer of 42 and be trying to find a formula that would result in that number. THIS IS NOT THE WAY THINGS WORK

It is if you're a rightwinger, trapped in the delusion that you create reality and the world simply bends to your whims.

Derpitude has no geographical limitations.

I'm not sure if anyone is interested in what's happening in Puerto Rico, but I'll leave this here.

Apparently, the Governor Luis Fortuño said, "La Universidad de Puerto Rico, lamentablemente, se convirtió en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, en vez de Florida State University" (Translation: "The University of Puerto Rico, unfortunately, became more like the National Autonomous University of Mexico than the Florida State University"). There are some slight issues with his statements:

* The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is one of the most prestigious universities in the American continent.

* The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) is no push over either: the UPR ranks in the Top 35 for Ibero America, the Mayaguez Campus (aka UPRM, RUM, Colegio), is among the top 15 in Latin America, and one of the Top 10 Universities in Engineering in the USA.

* This is not to slant Florida State University. It has excellent ranking, but it is inaccurate to compare all three universities since the UNAM and the UPR aren't included in the USA ranking indexes. For example, the ranking as second cheapest university in the USA is fine, but inaccurate, since the UPR is actually cheaper (total costs for a full year at FSU was around $3,200, and at the UPR is around $2,800).

* FSU has certain problems that does compromise their status.

* So, our dear Governor not only insulted my Alma Mater, it also denigrated the UNAM. And this guy once said he wanted to put the UPR as a world class university?

* If only to make this even worst: Gov. Fortuño, while not elected as a Republican, is very active in the National Republican Party.

The Derpitude knows no boundaries.

Sorry for the rant.

This is the "evidence" the Palin revisionists keep citing, but it doesn't prove that the "part of the ride was to warn the British", that's not at all what he's saying there. She makes it sound like he planned to get captured!

They're probably extrapolating from a section of Page 4 of the deposition, where Revere tells the officers that captured him not to proceed to Lexington, where they would likely meet a gathered militia force of 500 (if I'm reading it right). Spinning it into informing the British of anything entails actively ignoring that he was captured. It's very much Barton-style revisionism.

Absolutely. I think part of the lack of awareness is because of the close relationship to the US, and the political mess in the Island.

There's some xenophobia, but I don't sense it's as organized as the nativist movement in the US. It can be almost as harsh as the US one tho, but it lacks the central movement.

I had an argument once over the location of the very college from which I graduated. In response to a question, I said my doctorate was from North Texas State, now (most deplorably imho) known as the University of North Texas. Someone spoke up, "Yeah, that's the little school up in Canyon."
I said, "Er, no, it's in Denton."
The fence-post debater continued, "No, it's Canyon. My sister went there."
"I went there and it's in Denton. I should know where my own school is." (I could have added, "unless it's Texas Tech, in which case I would have been too drunk to know what town it is in." A good way for TTUers to remember the name of the town: It's the same as the county whose jail no doubt would have hosted them from time to time.)
"Are you calling my sister a liar?"
"Not her, you."
The fool huffed away, as contrarians often do when you call their bluff. What did this person do for a living? He was a local news reporter, for the Fox affiliate. True story.

I also met someone who was sure my undergrad alma mater, Cornell, was in Virginia of all places. He was willing to take my word that it was in New York though.

Well that was weird, been a quite a while since I talked to a drunk, stoned on pills, hooker. The loser kid upstairs who sometimes crashes with his folks (or just comes by to borrow money late at night, hmm?) brought her home because they are out of town. Apparently he then stiffed her, took her oxycontin and put her out, she is probably about 48 and he is like 17-19.

She was making a scene and banging on the door after midnight, I went up and brought her down to my place before the cops showed. Cops drove thru, "nothing to see here", and they left. :)

I tried getting ahold of a couple of people for her about a ride with no luck so I ended up calling for a cab to take her back to her motel. The little weasel called here while we were waiting for the cab and immediately went into damage control "Listen I don't know what she is telling you but all I did was give her a ride, blah, blah, blah..." Gee, guilty conscience much?

She was starting to scratch (OXY withdrawl) so I gave her a few hydocodones and $20.00 and put her in the cab. Fucking sad, it always is, I have met a dozen just like her over the years, alcohol and pills and the constant struggle to earn enough money to keep them coming. :(

Now for that fucking piece of shit upstairs? I am going to have to think about that one for a day or two, but something very nasty and embarrassing is going to happen to that little fuck in the near future. I can guarantee it... ;)

Here is what Conservapedia says under "Paleozoic":

The Paleozoic was originally known as the Primary, but was renamed the Paleozoic, meaning ancient life, according to the evolutionary view. Under the uniformitarian dates assigned by secular geologists, it represents approximately the period of Earth's history from 540 million years ago to 250 million years ago.[1]

Flood geologists reject the uniformitarian assumptions behind the dates derived by secular geologists, so they reject these dates (see geologic system). Instead, they would consider the Paleozoic sediment to be early Flood deposits.[2]

Now that one is a pet peeve of mine. Part of the purpose of the ride was to warn the British that colonists would exercise their gun rights.

it would be amusing to send these conservapedia guys off on a little chase to track down a copy a the "british constitution" so that it could be proven or disproven that british citizens or colonials ever had gun rights

Another quote from Professor Palin on the Statue of Liberty;

Lady Liberty is the symbol of unity and friendship we have with other freedom-loving nations. It’s also a “warning” of sorts, as France encouraged us to keep democracy alive as the recipient of this gift… basically telling us not to blow it. Thank you for this reminder, France!

"Part of the purpose of Revere's ride was to warn the British that colonists would exercise their natural right to bear arms."

Because almost five years after the Boston Massacre, the British had no idea the colonists might resist them with force.

The Boston massacre was an instance of badly outnumbered soldiers facing a truculent mob. It takes considerable discipline to face such a mob. Our own national guard shot up our own students at Kent State under less scary circumstances. The redcoats got rattled and opened fire.

John Adams was their defense lawyer and he won them an acquittal on grounds of self defense. From a colonist jury.

What conservatives mean when they talk about gun rights, if you try to see their point from a sympathetic perspective, is that the right to keep and bear arms is inherent in the right of self defense, which is part of English common law and has enjoyed general acceptance in law and custom, over much of Europe and the American colonies, for centuries.

The opposing view, if you try to see it from an unsympathetic perspective, is that the whole notion of rights of any sort is cockeyed, and most particularly, the notion of rights as anything but privileges bestowed, for the time being, by the state, upon certain of its subjects.

No argument from physics can dislodge this view. An argument from human behavior might simply note that with a lot of people, the only sure way to get them to not make trouble about the revocation of what they say are rights is to kill them. In other words, claims of rights are signals, and not cheap signals either. For such rights, once claimed, must be defended or the claimant will be mocked and no other claim he or she may make will be taken seriously.

What “gun rights?” When Paul Revere took his famous ride, there was no US Constitution, and no Second Amendment.

True, but there were gun rights. A limited right to bear arms had been enacted in the Bill of Rights 1689:

"That the subjects which are Protestants may have arms for their defence suitable to their conditions and as allowed by law."

The US Bill of Rights 1791 was largely an updating and entrenching of the 1689 Act.

The British, however, weren't coming after personal arms. They were coming after military stores. They threw out flour and preserved meat where they found it in Concord, on the grounds that it was military supplies. The weapons they destroyed were cannon.

Unless Palin and whomever is asserting the civilians right to form militias as well-equipped as the military, with the express purpose of being used to resist the military, there's not a hell of a lot of comparison.

Now that one is a pet peeve of mine. One time when I mentioned Mexico, my drooling ignoramus of a cousin pointedly asked "New or old?" as though this were a real distinction he had caught me forgetting to make. I said, "There is no such place as 'old' Mexico, there is Mexico and New Mexico, period."
He said, "No such place? Why, hell, I been to old Mexico myself." This is what is known as invincible ignorance.

Your cousin could have done worse. Italy=Mexico and Ireland=Missouri is a better fit than Italy=Missouri, Ireland=Mexico. There is a time and a place for being a stickler for accuracy and deriding colloquial regionalisms.

Within his immediate circle of acquaintances, and from the perspective of how the people around him talk, he probably got it right. I've heard the usage "old Mexico".

A few years ago, right after I got back from Paraguay, a neighbor confidently nodded and said, "Yeah, that's southern Mexico."

re: #227 Spocomptonite

Finally! As soon as wikipedia started being changed, I immediately went to look at conservapedia knowing that whatever happened at W would be like 100x worse at C, but I couldn't get into Conservapedia at all for a while.

I like their talk progression

Edit 1: "their 2nd Amendment rights"

Talk: Undo revision. There was no constitution yet.

Edit 2: "their gun rights"

This is both funny and totally backwards. Totally. If this was mathematics instead of history, they would basically have an answer of 42 and be trying to find a formula that would result in that number. THIS IS NOT THE WAY THINGS WORK

Actually, working back from the answer is a potent technique. For instance, the chess problem of how to win with queen against bishop and rook is impossibly bushy if you try to do it with a forward tree search. However, suppose you begin with all positions where, however the guy with the rook and bishop moves, the player with the queen then can safely grab either the bishop or the rook, or can checkmate the king, you call all those positions "won". Next, all positions from which you can reach one of those "won" positions, count as "wins in 1", and you mark the winin1 position with the winning response. Now your list of positions has grown. You keep working back like this. It's a backward tree and eventually every possible position with queen vs. rook and bishop shows up on the list. Now, to play the game, just look up which position you're in, and make the indicated move.

Except that was the whole purpose. The Militia was everyone because it was seen as the only way to prevent a tyrant from using a standing army to oppress the people. In that time and place they didn't see any difference. The rifle or smoothbore that they carried was a hunting and military weapon. You had to be able to shoot deer, birds, thieves, indians or red coats with it and for all those reasons there was no legitimate reason, in their eyes, for the government restricting firearms. That the heavy weapons should be kept in common at an Armory was a given, it was not absolute - Henry Knox is alleged to have kept 2 after the war but that may have had more to do with his role as commander of artillery than anything else.

re: #317 wlewisiii

I think the main way that they prevented a standing army from having tyranny was by not having a standing army.

The formation of the Constitution was supposed to prevent tyrants-- the militia weren't intended as a last line of defense against that. They were supposed to be the militia, the military. They were definitely supposed to have military arms, and they were supposed to prevent the need for a formation of a regular army except during wartime.

To me, the 2nd amendment fight is a little silly. The founders would have absolutely allowed personal weapons of the highest-grade type. Rifles, pistols, swords, whatever, they would have been baffled by anyone suggesting we ban personal ownership of them. To me, the 2nd amendment is about the right of people to bear arms in actual militias, and to not let the government suppress training together in actual companies-- because, as you say, they feared the use of a regular army.

Anyway, I was talking about that right in the modern day. Whatever the founders may have thought-- even if they did want the militias as a hedge against government tyranny-- that is not the current interpretation of the right to bear arms-- it mostly focuses on the right to personal protection.

In my humble opinion, conservapedia is so out on the fringe that nothing that happens there is real news.

For a fun laugh, read their page on counterexamples to the theory of relativity, most of which was edited by renowned astrophysicist Andy Schlafly himself...

"The theory of relativity is a mathematical system that allows no exceptions. It is heavily promoted by liberals who like its encouragement of relativism and its tendency to mislead people in how they view the world."

He basically insisted that "old" Mexico is a proper usage and that I got it wrong by not specifying which I meant. As for Europe, I have been to both Ireland and Missouri and they are nothing alike except that the people more or less speak English, there are more green spaces than here in Texas, and there are a lot of old brick buildings. The similarity between Mexico and Italy is even more limited and means that he missed some really striking distinctions or didn't think they were important.

Citation needed for the most factual part of the entry, but the next one about "gun rights" does not have a citation and apparently to this edit doesn't need one!
