I actually registered the domain OyPhone.com back in the day, hoping to sell Jewish phone software on it. Especially applications to help observe the “minor’ hoidays like Lag B’Omer, Tisha B’Av, and the 17th of Tammuz. It never got off the ground but I still own the domain.

But is there real productivity value in some of these innovations? It seems to me that most of what Apple has been doing “popularizing” technology. Which is great, bit does not really move mankind forward in any meaningful way.

Apple’s Macs Hit By Malware; Are iPhones Next?

Apple computers have avoided most serious virus attacks, but that era may be over. As the company prepared for this week’s developers conference, it was also taking steps to stop a malware “phishing” program.

Apple’s computers have been able to avoid most serious hacking attacks, but that era may be over. As Steve Jobs and his colleagues prepared for this week’s developers conference, the company was also taking steps to stop a malware “phishing” program.

The ploy, says technology columnist Rich Jaroslovsky of Bloomberg News, uses an infected website to install a piece of software on Apple computers. The software then pops up a new window, with an urgent message about a security vulnerability.

While they no longer seem to care about the Desktop and high-end experience, there was a lot of technology pushed to its limits for the iPad and iPhone.

Sure, nothing was invented out of wholecloth for it, but it certainly showed the right way to integrate that technology.

For very high end PCs (renderers, etc)—things with a pair of 6-core Xeons—we don’t use Mac Pros anymore. They don’t have the right videocard options, and they screwed up with their handling of triple-channel memory.

California man uses Hidden software to track stolen MacBook

Technology may ultimately become sentient and wipe humankind from existence like the virus it is, but, until then, we can only marvel at how it continues to transmogrify everyday life.

Case in point, a victim of computer theft in the United States has been reunited with his stolen MacBook after police were able to track the naughty thief through the pilfered system’s built-in camera.

Oakland resident Joshua Kaufman reported his computer as stolen back in March of this year, informing the police that the hardware was equipped with covert tracking software known as Hidden.

And so, although the computer was no longer in Mr. Kaufman’s possession, Hidden soon began sending him still images of a mystery man, captured going about his day, napping on the couch, and periodically stopping to enjoy his ill-gotten technology.

Beyond merely snapping the man’s face and otherwise dull daily habits, the Hidden software also sent Mr. Kaufman a screenshot of its subject logging into his email account, which ultimately provided the police with enough information to track the stolen notebook.

The man in the photos, 27-year-old taxi driver Muthanna Aldebashi, turned out not to be the thief, but was evidently arrested by investigating officers for knowingly receiving stolen goods.

Happily reunited with his Apple MacBook, Mr. Kaufman said the police eventually utilised the email-based information garnered by Hidden to lure the actual thief out into the open—at which point another arrest was made.

Cool!

They get a lot of things right. Like the ability of a computer to sleep and wake up properly. It was a long time coming before most Windows laptops got this right (and some still mes it up.) With tight integration of hardware and software, they have the ability to get all these integration points done properly.

I’m a big fan of their laptops, and all my laptops—even the Windows 7 ones—are Mac hardware.

(Anyone who preferred Mac before they went Intel/OSX was simply insane. That I’ll agree with.)

I think Weiner took the photos. I think that the photos being circulated are of him and that he sent them to someone, at some point. Once the photos were no longer under his control, it was only a matter of time before they became public.

I have to say, as an experienced Photoshopper (and as someone who was on the Photoshop development team through version 4.5), “fixing” photos in the background to strengthen a forgery is one of the oldest tricks in the book. That shelf of photos in the background with the subjects clearly visible is a little suspicious.

That’s a lot of allegedly up in there.

One of the worst-case scenarios is that these are real pictures of Weiner, and that his email/computer actually did get hacked and pictures stolen. That’d be rather difficult to prove, and it’d be rather easy to make it seem as though he was sending the emails from an ‘alternate address’.

But the picture is probably him, I’m thinking. He really doesn’t have a beer gut.

I’m a pretty hardcore Apple fanboy and seriously underwhelmed.

I’m not enthused about the attempt to re-envision desktop computing as an extension of the mobile experience. I already find the flat icon view of my iPhone to be outdated and cludgy. Why are they bringing it to the desktop?

I also find it embarrassing that they’re now playing catch-up to Android in some jaw-droppingly simple things like notifications and widgets, and won’t even release it until (by their track record of “Fall” dates), November or December at the earliest.

iCloud is interesting, but I’m going to have to see how well it works to be worth it. US cell carriers are jaw-droppingly bad in terms of coverage and speed compared to what I got used to in Japan. The major carriers won’t even allow Facetime over the air yet — how am I to trust they’ll reliably deliver my music when I want it?
