Outrage! Charles Johnson Won’t Apologize!

Gloating wingnuts demand apologies, in vain
Wingnuts • Views: 34,171

William Jacobson, one of the first wingnut bloggers to spread the ridiculous talking point that Sarah Palin got it exactly right with her absurd distortion of Paul Revere’s ride, is now outraged — outraged, I say! — that I’m not going to apologize to Andrew Breitbart: Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion: Charles Johnson: I Won’t Apologize to Breitbart.

At the end of Weiner’s press conference, under questioning, Weiner stated that he apologized to Andrew Breitbart. How interesting that Charles is incapable of doing the same.

Well, since I’m feeling generous right now, here’s my offer to the wingnut blogs and to Andrew Breitbart: I’ll be happy to apologize to the Fraud King, just as soon as he apologizes to Shirley Sherrod, Planned Parenthood, and ACORN, for smearing them with dishonestly edited videos.

Which I don’t expect to ever happen, of course. And I can guarantee that I will defend Andrew Breitbart’s next smear target, too — with no apologies.

You big mean meanie!
////

In all seriousness, though - Breitbart being right for once earns him no apologies. It simply means that even dishonest, lying pusbag ideologues can be right every once in a while.

3 Obdicut  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:10:13pm

Exactly my reaction. Brietbart demanding an apology from anybody, or anyone asking for one on his behalf, is goddamn laughable.

The man exists to smear. That he happened to get his hands on a real smear doesn't erase his total lack of ethics in the utter and complete fabrication of his previous smears.

4 Killgore Trout  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:11:28pm

If Breitbart was a reasonably honest person who made some mistakes and admitted them then he might be due an apology. Wiener was right to apologize because he knew Breitbart didn't hack his account to set him up. Those of us without that knowledge were correct to be suspicious. I wouldn't have it any other way.

So can a broken clock. And it's right twice a day. Will I still trust it to accurately tell me the real time of day? Not likely.

re: #3 Obdicut

Still kind of annoyed at Weiner that he folded and specifically apologized to Breitbart.

When they were pressing him on that he should have said, 'no fuck him.'

(we can only dream!)

7 Shiplord Kirel  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:13:06pm

All this episode proves is that Breitbart doesn't literally lie about everything. So what? If he did, things would be easier. Even then, the proof has been a long time coming.

8 ElCapitanAmerica  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:13:52pm

I don't understand, apologize for what?

You don't have to apologize for not believing an unreliable source, and it's not like anybody said definitely that this was fabricated, just that it was highly suspicious.

Just like I won't apologize for saying the yfrog email "PIN" is easy to hack, even though ImageShack's CEO says it isn't (because you see he locks out the account after 10 tries, a claim I couldn't verify because he shut down the service).

9 Killgore Trout  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:14:09pm

I noticed some people lamenting on the earlier thread that this does give Breitbart a cerrtain amount of credibility. He finally got a big story that didn't end up being fake. I'm not too worried. Like Glenn Beck, Breitbart is doing much more damage to Republicans and he'll eventually implode or just fade away when wingnuts get tired of his antics. He's a self correcting problem.

But do you dismiss it out of hand or check another clock first? Or maybe two other clocks?

11 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:15:32pm

By the way, I do think it's appropriate for Weiner to apologize to Breitbart. Weiner lied when he accused Breitbart of fraud, and he knew he was lying. An apology is called for.

I didn't lie to anybody, and I'm not going to apologize for disbelieving a proven liar.

14 gummitch  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:18:01pm

I dispute the contention that this is a "big story". Watergate was a big story, Iran-Contra was a big story. Some congressman taking snaps of his underwear and mailing them to a young woman is not a "big story."

On the other hand, Weiner's admission proves that all liberals are perverts and godless liars.

15 Charles Johnson  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:18:08pm

re: #10 sod

But do you dismiss it out of hand or check another clock first? Or maybe two other clocks?

If it comes from Breitbart, you dismiss it unless and until someone with actual credibility verifies it.

That's what I was trying to say. Even saying that you'd apologize if he apologizes for say the Sherrod case is the wrong type of moral equivalency. It makes it sound like not believing Briebart is the same as smearing an innocent person with malice as he did in her case.

If Breitbart was holding any other photos "in reserve" (to be generous, but other characterizations might be applicable) then Weiner's very public apologies have rendered them much less valuable to him --or anyone else.

If I know it is broken, then yes I will dismiss it out of hand and check another source. Perhaps a better comparison should have been the Boy Who Cried wolf one time too many. Breitbart has called "WOLF" to many times and has been proven to either be wrong or out right lying to believe him.

I would not be so sanguine about this. Propaganda is an astonishingly powerful force, and Brietbart is very good at exploiting certain cultural memes, even if it is smoke and mirrors.

I'm not a Nancy Pelosi fan, but she has no choice but to call for an ethics investigation. We're in the middle of a recession, and many people in Weiner's district are in a tough place and depending upon him to help improve things...and he decides to use his time to act like the world is his private locker room/frat house. It's a serious black eye for the democrats at a time when they were really gaining steam for the 2012 elections.

Ah, another instance of a liberal “feminist” who got where she is due to her husband. She’s the “smartest person in the world”, but has demonstrated virtually no ability to accomplish anything of note.

Meanwhile, woman who have actually accomplished great things on her own (repeat after me, libtards...Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin) are denigrated daily.

This is an interesting glimpse into the deranged wingnut mind, though. To Jacobson, there seems to be no difference between Rep. Weiner and me. The fact that I believed Weiner's excuses and mistakenly defended him makes me just as guilty as Weiner himself.

Of course, they don't actually believe this crap. They're just in full-on gloat mode, and trying to press what they see as an advantage.

46 Shiplord Kirel  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 5:34:40pm

Weiner is beyond pathetic. The original offense, sending a raunchy pic, was too silly to be worth much outrage, but this has gone on for two weeks. He could have come clean any time about it, but he decided to dig the hole deeper and deeper and he ends up apologizing to the likes of Breitbart. I think he admitted it only because the facts were catching up with him. Even if he cares nothing for the truth, he really should have known it would come out eventually, and acted accordingly.

Anyone with a clue watched Anthony Weiner's first 'slick- willy' imitation and plainly saw that he was lying, but there were no end of apologists for him on the net and in the media and no lack of lackeys advancing 'plausible deniability' scenarios.
Now that even the clueless and the lying liars who knew, but tried to cover for him have to admit he was lying, there will be no end of apologists telling us 'it's no big deal' when Weiner's judgement is obviously waaay off level.
Bring on the apologias- I'm laughing.

I'd say without qualm that New Yorkers could go right ahead and re-elect that simp (and they probably will) after the House slaps him around a bit, but the stupid things he has said and done in his capacity in the House affects me, way out here on the prairie.
Suck on it, Weiner!

re: #56 freetoken

There is no shame in assuming Weiner was innocent.

I'll repeat myself: the reason this has traction at all is because of the prurient nature of the issue. If our society wasn't so obsessed with outing its own repressed sexuality this wouldn't be an issue at all.

Well, what he did was tantamount to cheating. I consider phone/internet sex with another person a cheating thing. I mean if he was caught with S&M photos with his wife, the same reaction may happen, but that, at least to me, wouldn't mean anything.

As much as he lied to his family, he lied to US. Everyone. Quite frankly, I didn't want to believe he did it. I thought the photoshopping of the undies pic was a little far fetched, but I was willing to see how it played out.

Most at risk are his own constituents whom he represented. I don't understand why these men don't realize the totality of this. Beyond the Right/Left issue.

When it comes to personal issues - and make no doubt about it, a man flirting (even in poor taste) with another adult woman is personal - I will assume the accused of the inter-personal impropriety is innocent until shown otherwise.

That you seem to be so smug about this issue - which again has no significance (other than if he was using government property for personal use, which itself would be a pretty trivial example of that kind of thing) - only shows that you too want to make something out of another person's private life.

Actually, I'm wondering how much the lawyers had to do with this. He said it a few times that he was talking with his lawyers or legal counsel. At some point, they most have told him he had to come clean. Maybe he thought what he did wouldn't be discovered even by them.

Still kind of annoyed at Weiner that he folded and specifically apologized to Breitbart.

When they were pressing him on that he should have said, 'no fuck him.'

(we can only dream!)

Yeah to this. Not least because it diminishes the people he really needs to be apologizing to, namely, his wife, the people of his district, his coworkers in Congress, and last but not least, any women he was bothering without their permission.

Breitbart needs to stop acting like he's an actor in this little drama.

A good lawyer wouldn't even ask if the pictures are really him. It's irrelevant to their job, which is to advocate for the client. They don't want to know, because if the client tells them something that indicates guilt, they're ethically bound to recuse themselves.

I propose that a lot of people are letting their moral dissent (at the idea of a married person flirting online with someone not their spouse) get manipulated by meme-engineers.

There are very roughly 100,000,000 married people in this country. A significant portion of them will engage in flirtations outside of marriage, and a non trivial number of them will actually engage in sex outside of marriage.

I'm not saying it is right. However, the subject of flirting is certainly popular and any online search will come up with millions of hits, e.g.: Why Married Men Flirt

So why is the case of Anthony Weiner special?

Because he is an effective rhetorician for the Democratic Party, and certain vested interests don't like that.

re: #14 gummitch

I dispute the contention that this is a "big story". Watergate was a big story, Iran-Contra was a big story. Some congressman taking snaps of his underwear and mailing them to a young woman is not a "big story."

On the other hand, Weiner's admission proves that all liberals are perverts and godless liars.

In conjunction with the guy whose name I have forgotten who was posting shirtless pictures on Craigslist, though, it does suggest that politicians simply have no idea how to have affairs discreetly anymore.

For Weiner, yes it is. He implied Andrew Breitbart had hacked Weiner's account or gotten the photos from someone who did. He knew that was untrue when he said that, and lying like that requires an apology. As Charles as pointed out, his suspicion of Breitbart was honest and well founded. All that is required from Charles is the admission that Breitbart was correct on this story, which Chalres has made.

My issue is the enormity of it. If my husband is having phone or internet sex, sending pictures or out-and-out cheating, it's between us. What Weiner did and others like him who start off with denials, was lie to everyone. And look at the shit we're getting for it here? They're trying to slam Charles' character. You are correct in that there are people who do things like flirt and cheat. As a matter of fact, in the days before effective DNA testing, studies in the US and UK showed by blood test results only, that somewhere between 20% and 25% of children born in those nations were not the children of the fathers as listed by the mothers. People do what they do and suffer for it.

The thing for me about Rep. Weiner is that every time I've ever seen him making some kind of statement, it's been obvious to me that he was engaging in some level of dishonesty- I can't stand that.

226 FQ Kafir  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 6:40:43pm

If Brietbart is alleging something, I have a very strong instinct to disbelieve it because of his terrible track record. Also, I'm not good at telling when people are actually guilty or just acting guilty, so I tend to give the benefit of the doubt; like with Sanford, I thought he was cracking up or had some sort of personal crisis, rather than the more mundane yet baffling "I had an affair with a woman I'm calling my soulmate now".

He is though very effective in arguments against the political opposition, and he has taken on good causes in the past, for which I applaud him.

That he let himself get caught into a political trap in part because of said peccadilloes - well, I've stated my assertion several times that our society is obsessed with outing its repressed sexuality, a hangover from the Victorian era and the new fundamentalism reaction of the early 20th century.

re: #199 freetoken

Anthony Weiner knew that, and decided he was going to endanger his work, his party's work, his marriage and his family's privacy by playing around on the Internet in his shorts.

Catching politicians doing naughty sexual stuff is an old, old trick. It got this old because politicians keep falling for it.

re: #211 Dark_Falcon

For Weiner, yes it is. He implied Andrew Breitbart had hacked Weiner's account or gotten the photos from someone who did. He knew that was untrue when he said that, and lying like that requires an apology. As Charles as pointed out, his suspicion of Breitbart was honest and well founded. All that is required from Charles is the admission that Breitbart was correct on this story, which Chalres has made.

Yeah, Weiner lied about that one, and should apologize, although, frankly, if Breitbart hadn't made the story about him--mutter mutter--anyway, I agree that Weiner's apology is proper.

For myself, honestly, the next time Breitbart comes up with something, I'm still going to assume it's a hoax and a lie because it's Breitbart. One Congressman caught with his pants down will not neutralize what I've seen this schmuck--(Breitbart, not Weiner) do.

All true, but Weiner did start to get hinkty early on.

This kind of thing, you're guessing. All the time. Usually based on past behavior of people involved. I knew AB was a liar, I didn't know AW was a liar and a cheater. Yet.

My main take away is just how recklessly he's behaved as he engaged in this behavior. And with the seemingly prolific nature of his internet indiscretions, it had to dawn on him from (at least from time-to-time) that his odds weren't good.

He's probably now hopelessly compromised politically, based on the way the media is reacting so far and the avenues of inquiry they're taking up.

I wish I knew.

Some of the cheating, and I've said this before, I think has to do with the basic nature of the politician. These are people whose gut instinct is to court people and win them over. Politicians are seducers. Not all of them can keep the instinct under control, or restrict it to their work.

There's a scene in one of Mary Renault's books about Alexander the Great, where one of his cousins is hanging out with the courtesan he's been seeing, and they're talking about Alexander. She says "He's practically one of us, you know," and the man says something to the effect that no, Alexander doesn't sleep with hardly anyone. She says she didn't mean sex, she means he needs to have people look at him and adore him.

That was Bill Clinton for ya (who otherwise did not resemble Alexander the Great a whole lot).

Maybe when we quit accepting the dim and the greedy and the liar, just because they happen to be on 'our side', then things will improve.

Sarah Palin has officially made our nation dumber.

Now Bill O'Reilly takes history lessons from her;
[Link: www.mediaite.com...]

Watch the clip, and check out Goldberg kind of making fun of O'Reilly there at the end;

” O’Reilly countered that Revere had, as Palin said, “warned the British” by telling them “you’d better knock it off.”

What Breitbart did was inappropriate.

Re-posting the original tweet--that went out to the public--was probably OK. It was a message that was transmitted for millions of people to see.

But posting images that were sent in a private conversation--even if one of the parties agrees--crosses an ethical line.

This doesn't excuse Weiner, but it means that there's no need for anyone to apologize to Breitbart.

Did you find the song, what do you think? :-)

I found it grating. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of Calle 13. :) I mostly hear the singles they puts out, and the Outrage of the Disk.

As for the lyrics, there's no chance in hell I'd see anything like that ever recording in the USA. This one in particular might not have had a big coverage over here because it was part of a Best Buy special edition[1]. It also seems to fit better musically and lyrically with their first CD, which seems to have come from.

But then, there have been some hits that would never see the light of the day if they were to be recorded in the USA. :)

----
[1] The other song in the special edition is a remix of a hit of the previous CD.

Apparently he's been flirting & sexting with numerous remotely located women on the internet for years, and continued to do so after his recent marriage. He also, apparently engaged in phone sex with at least one of them.

According to Breitbart, he sent the underwear photo to one of these women (who he'd been flirting with and sexting for some time) in an e-mail on May 18th. Supposedly she shared these communications, the underwear photo and more explicit photos with Breitbart more than a week before the underwear tweet that started the whole scandal.

I didn't watch the Weiner press conference, but my understanding is that he admitted sending the underpants tweet and said he deleted it almost immediately as he sent in in error? Someone who's been following more closely will have to fill in who he claimed it was actually intended it for.

It's unfortunate.
So, how do we change the politicians job, to attract honest folks?

Not to be depressing, but are we sure some of these politicians didn't start as honest folks?

Being elected is a basic transformation of social standing, economic opportunity, self-image: with that opening of options, I don't wonder if a lot of people waver. I mean, most psychological traits bandied about aren't nearly as stable and generalized as we'd like to believe, and I'd imagine that the positional change of having all that power would be transformative.

If I could figure out an experimental model, I'd try and get a grant to study this. Unfortunately, the rich and powerful generally don't fund social science studies that scrutinize them.

No, Zand Market in Albany.

Best Zand story ever--one of my friends was supposed to go there and get some groceries after work. He's half listening, writing stuff down, "Yeah, yeah, honey, right, the kind of pita we always get..", and of course he gets there and realizes he has no idea what kind of pita they always get.

So he looks at the fifteen different brands of pita on the counter, looks at the owner piteously, and says, "What kind of pita does my wife want me to buy?"

The owner glances at his kippa, snags a package out of the wilderness of pita, and says, "Most of my Israeli customers like this one."

It was the right pita.

Emic or etic?

My dad was an ethnographer who worked with nomads in Pakistan, so I've been indoctrinated with "emic" methodology since I was wee. I didn't get far enough in grad school to really nail myself to one methodology or the other. My concern about both is that the individual anthropologist is often an imperfect valve, and within academic circles you're fiscally and socially rewarded to postulate or claim big, brassy things about your subjects.

re: #482 NJDhockeyfan

You mean that it was from a hacker? He's a liar. Everyone knows it. No, I don't believe his explanation.

I meant whatever explanation he offered in his press conference for who he actually intended the tweet for. I didn't watch it, and only now just checked the transcript where he appears to admit it was actually intended for the very woman he sent it too:

WEINER: Last Friday night, I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as a direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle. Once I realized I had posted it to Twitter, I panicked. I took it down and said that I had been hacked. I then continued with that story -- to stick to that story, which was a hugely regrettable mistake. This woman was unwittingly dragged into this and bears absolutely no responsibility. I am so sorry to have disrupted her life in this way.

To be clear, the picture was of me, and I sent it. I am deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife Huma and our family and my constituents, my friends, supporters and staff. In addition, over the past few years, I have engaged in several inappropriate conversations conducted over Twitter, Facebook, email and occasionally on the phone with women I had met online. I've exchanged messages and photos of an explicit nature with about six women over the last three years. For the most part, these communications took place before my marriage, though some have sadly took place after. To be clear, I have never met any of these women or had physical relationships at any time.

The ages reported so far are 21, 26 and 40 then. The older two were apparently longer term, consensual exchanges.

BTW, without having read anymore of the transcript, that first sentence:

Last Friday night, I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as a direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle.

If he's saying he intentionally sent an unsolicited photo of his underwear clad erection to a stranger whose only connection to him was mutual twitter following, that's sexually harassing behavior and he should resign. I'll need to read further to see if he makes clear whether or not they had more of a relationship.

I'll need to read further to see if he makes clear whether or not they had more of a relationship.

This is all I saw in the rest of the press conference transcript:

REP. WEINER: Yes, yes. We had exchanged some perfunctory direct messages, but there wasn't -- we had never spoken.

...

REP. WEINER: No, we had -- I mean, I don't know her, and I still don't really know her. She was a follower who -- we had cursory direct message contact that she had -- was having trouble with some people on -- that were tweeting about her and giving her a hard time because they were -- she was following me.

"Perfunctory" and "cursory"...

Absent anything further it sounds like his underwear-erection tweet was unsolicited / unwanted and something akin to a subway pervert flashing a fellow commuter (though, in a similar underwear-clad fashion, I suppose).

That was actually a different woman than the one who was tweeted. The one who released their communications, photos and has been making the rounds today doing interviews on the subject had a longer-term internet relationship with Weiner -- she also received the same grey underwear-clad photo and still more explicit photos by e-mail. Weiner appears to have reused same underpants photo, weeks later, in the tweet that started this whole scandal.

Blogger says he has X-rated photo involving Weiner

WASHINGTON - The conservative blogger who reported that a photo of a man's crotch had been sent from Rep. Anthony Weiner's Twitter account to a woman college student says he has an X-rated picture he'll publicize if the New York Democrat attempts reprisals against him.

Conservative activist Andrew Breitbart of the website BigGovernment.com tells NBC's "Today" show he considers the image "an insurance policy" against attacks from Weiner, who on Monday admitted the crotch photo was of him.

An insurance policy, Breitbart? I think you've just admitted to the whole world the true nature of what you've been up to.

Yellow journalsim is not an accurate description.

A good lawyer wouldn't even ask if the pictures are really him. It's irrelevant to their job, which is to advocate for the client. They don't want to know, because if the client tells them something that indicates guilt, they're ethically bound to recuse themselves.

Not exactly. They aren't ethically bound to recuse. They just can't tell the client to lie and if they know he's going to lie on the stand, then he/she should recuse. Otherwise it's suborning perjury.

568 abolitionist  Tue, Jun 7, 2011 8:34:33am

I want to see the whole interview with Breitbart, because this cyberslop-regurgitated-AI-word-salad of a news article doesn't stand up to scrutiny, on the point of whether "insurance policy" is attributable to Breitbart. In fact, it's flatly self-contadictory.

I should have read the whole thing carefully before posting.

569 abolitionist  Tue, Jun 7, 2011 9:08:28am

This is more detailed coverage of the NBC Today interview Matt Lauer.

Breitbart Says He's Holding X-Rated Weiner Photo
Asked pointedly if he's keeping alleged image as insurance policy, blogger says, "I don't like to think of it that way."

Lauer pressed further, sparking this exchange:

LAUER: Under no circumstance will you release that? In other words, let's say Anthony Weiner supporters target you in some other way?

BREITBART: If Anthony Weiner decides to make this a jihad against me for his interpretation of putting me into this situation, you know what, I'll take that as a – you know, you said an insurance policy. Maybe. I can't foresee a circumstance in which I would release that. I don't think I want to put his family through that type of thing. But for instance, I've already started to hear words that Megan, the woman who came forth, people are prying through her private life. And they're-

LAUER: So would you use that photo to protect these women?

BREITBART: That's – you know, I'm not thinking of it that way, but I certainly have it in my possession. And I guarantee you he would use this against me and the people on the left side of the blogosphere would have used this against me. I could have put that out there and his career would have been over today.

In his final question to Breitbart, Lauer wondered: "Had you come into possession of photographs of a Republican congressman that were similar in nature to the photograph you received of Anthony Weiner, would you have been as quick to post that photograph?" Breitbart replied: "Yes....I'm repulsed when it's, when it's, you know, Larry Craig that's involved in these type of behaviors or Ensign, the Senator from Nevada....these guys put themselves in a blackmail-able situation."

As far as I can see, that "Maybe" is the closest Breitbart came to owning the phrase "insurance policy".
