Margaret Thatcher Won’t Be Meeting Sarah Palin

Thatcher ally: ‘Sarah Palin is nuts’
World • Views: 27,055

Half-governor Sarah Palin announced recently that she really, really wants to meet Margaret Thatcher; but apparently the feeling isn’t mutual.

It appears that the former prime minister has no intention of meeting the darling of the Tea Party movement. Andy McSmith reported in the Independent this morning that Palin is likely to be “thwarted” on the grounds that Thatcher, 86, rarely makes public appearances.

It would appear that the reasons go deeper than Thatcher’s frail health. Her allies believe that Palin is a frivolous figure who is unworthy of an audience with the Iron Lady. This is what one ally tells me:

Lady Thatcher will not be seeing Sarah Palin. That would be belittling for Margaret. Sarah Palin is nuts.

And with that, Your Honor, the prosecution rests.

We have good news and bad on Syria:

Good News: Syrian Ambassador to France has resigned in protests of the brutality of Al-Assad

PhilipinParis Philip Crowther
BREAKING Syrian ambassador to France tenders her resignation live on @France24_en. Her response to the crackdown in #Syria.

Bad News: Syrian Affliated Palestinians went into a refugee camp and killed 11.

AJELive AJELive
Palestinian faction loyal to #Syria shot dead at least 11 Palestinians at Yarmouk camp [Link: aje.me…]

If there is a silver lining here, it is that Hamas may be finished in elections. Of course, I’m counting on a competent campaign from Fatah. This can’t go well for Hamas in an election if brought up.

Thatcher was the first and loudest major politician in support of direct and extensive action to combat climate change. She has advanced degrees in science and an IQ well above room temperature.

She also knows Sarah is a political joke in Britian.

Sarah Palin is nuts? Certainly she means Sarah Palin is nuts about our right to bear arms and keep a well armed militia(s) like the Promise Keepers and The Minutemen.

Not always.

“I think we’ve been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it’s the government’s job to cope with it. ‘I have a problem, I’ll get a grant.’ ‘I’m homeless, the government must house me.’ They’re casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It’s our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations. There’s no such thing as entitlement, unless someone has first met an obligation.”

She started off with a reasonable premise: Government cannot fix all of your problems and over reliance on it is a bad thing.

Then she went into wacko Ayn Rand territory.

I did not say they were politically sound, just eloquent, well worded and delivered.

Imagine Sarah getting that point across; “Well, you know, we’re all just people, you know, and those welfare moms, well, like they hafta understand that they can’t expect to stay home and a free ride while other folks are gettin’ up and workin’ hard every day and goin’ out an’ huntin’ to fill the family larder, not with the cost of ammunition going up because people are hoarding it for fear of it being confiscated…”

etc…

re: #10 ProLifeLiberal

The situation in the Yarmouk camp isn’t nearly as straight forward. Earlier reports were indicating that mourners assaulted PFLP thugs who were there claiming that the PFLP manipulated the Palestinians to going to march on the Golan border and precipitating a conflict with Israel - and the PFLP or their Syrian backers opened fire on the mourners.

re: #25 Bulworth

My opinion of Thatcher has increased dramatically.

There’s no reason for her to pander to Palin. The TPer vote is irrelevent in Britain, and Thatcher has no reason to be interested in Palin.

Also, frankly, after all the whining and crying about how people didn’t like Palin because they were classists—well, they’ve got real class divisions in Britain, and Sarah doesn’t translate well on the conversion chart.

It’s a pity. If Maggie had a better sense of humor, I’m sure she could have an awesome time showing Sarah the sights.

My history prof at Guilford wanted to do a class on Reagan and Thatcher, but found it impossble to actually get any non partisan and unbiased material to teach from. The department chair actually laughed when he suggested the class. The mythology is taking over.

Empirically, Thatcher’s right wing approach to the economic crisis in England didn’t fair any better then the left wing approach in France under Mitterand. The employment and GDP numbers simply don’t support any other conclusion, but the wingnut mythology will not admit that. Her popularity largly stemmed from the Falklands War, since before that she was being called “Thatcher Thatcher milk snatcher!” for cutting school luches to needy children.

Yeah, this.

Thatcher’s allies know that Caribou Barbie only wants to meet her so she can have a photo to use on her website and in any potential campaign to prove she’s a successor to Reagan or something.

Problem is, Thatcher knew the real Reagan and is too smart to go along with it. Her frail health is the main reason she said no, but there’s no denying the political savvy behind rejecting Palin’s request to meet.

Reagan/Thatcher fans conveniently forget it, but Thatcher’s government had been gleefully engaged in dismantling the British armed forces before the Falklands kerfuffle appeared. “Pro-military” and “conservative” are not as closely associated in the UK as in the US, to say the least.

The British task force that sailed to the Falklands did so without airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft, resulting in heavy losses and many tactical restrictions from surprise low-level air attack. The last British carrier capable of operating these had been scrapped by the Thatcher government 2 years earlier. The carrier capable AEW aircraft themselves (Fairey Gannets) had soon followed. The Vulcan bombers that flew 16 hour missions to hit the Port Stanley airfield were just weeks from the scrapyard. Indeed, about half the Vulcans had already been cut up or donated to museums. At one point, British airmen went to California to scrounge parts from a Vulcan that had been donated to the Castle Air Force Base museum.

Margaret Thatcher, whom I’ve always admired as Prime Minister, is now 86 and suffering from dementia. It would be obscene if Sarah Palin were allowed to take advantage of this situation, for a photo-op.

Sarah badly wants the photo op; she thinks it would boost her feminist cred. The caregivers of the former Prime Minister will have to step up and protect Lady Thatcher.

65 The Ghost of a Flea  Tue, Jun 7, 2011 12:59:36pm

Poor Sarah. Thwarted at her attempt to rub elbows with a friend of Ronald Reagan. Thatcher may be old and sick, but you can bet she and her handlers know better than bestow any possible air of legitimacy on that idiot.
