Eric Cantor Calls on Weiner to Resign, But Gave Sanford and Ensign a Pass

Just some more GOP hypocrisy
Politics • Views: 28,164

Today, Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is calling on Anthony Weiner to resign.

But as always with Republicans, it’s instructive to take a look at what they said when their people were in the spotlight. In the cases of Mark Sanford and John Ensign, both of whom had real affairs in the real world involving real sex, and then lied about it and covered it up (not for a few days but for months or years), Eric Cantor sang a very different tune.

WALLACE: Finally, when you’ve got Republican leaders like Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina or Nevada Senator John Ensign admitting to extramarital affairs and staying in office, questionable use of either private funds or state money, in the case of Sanford, doesn’t the GOP, with all its talk of family values, risk looking like a bunch of hypocrites?

CANTOR: Look, I mean, is anyone happy to see all that have happened? No. I mean, it’s not good. But listen. We have our thoughts with their families and they themselves.

However, look. The party is not just about personalities. It’s about ideas. It’s about our ability to go out and prove that yes, we can lead this country again. So we have got a plan. We are talking about the solutions that actually can address some of the problems that working people in this country are facing, and we’re going to do that over the course of the next 16 months.

WALLACE: But if you’re going to talk the talk, why not walk the walk and say, “You know what? They should step down?”

CANTOR: Well, listen. I mean, again, I say in the instance of the people in South Carolina and Nevada, it is up to them, and those are the elected individuals by those states.

And again, it’s not about, necessarily, these personalities. The direction of this country — and the challenges that we face are enormous. And we ought to be talking about how to go about creating jobs again. We ought to be talking about the things that matter most to people in this country.

Well, Cantor is right—we ought to be talking about about how to go about creating jobs again. At least jobs other than “uterus police”.

Cantor is yet another jockeying, purely political and ambitious Republican. Everything he does is for immediate effect and I sincerely doubt he actually believes in any of the hypocritical garbage he routinely spews as a GOP cheer leader.

I am sure he believes is the serving corporate masters part, but that is it.

In many ways, this makes him more execrable than a creature like Bachman or Santorum, because he is smart enough to know better, but does not care since he only serves himself.

Today, Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is calling on Anthony Weiner to resign.

Well that does it. Obviously Weiner should immediately obey this order from the Republican from Virginia. I know Cantor’s views carry a lot of weight with NY Democrats and Democrats everywhere.

Interesting take on the Weiner scandal I saw on another site:

Want to know something you will never see?

- Barbara Boxer tweeting upskirt pics to an 18-year old boy.
- Amy Klobuchar emailing crotch shots to a 17-year old boy.
- Hillary Clinton sexting with a college boy.
- Nancy Pelosi hitting on young female pages on Capitol Hill

Why? Because women don’t succumb to the power they have and use it to dominate others sexually.

The plethora of female teacher-male student sex scandals over the years shows women aren’t immune from inappropriate relationships…but he definitely has a point about female politicians (so far). I know of some who’ve had “regular” affairs, but this kind of thing? Dumb as Palin may be, I just can’t see her emailing or tweeting topless pics of herself.

Computer evangelizing does get annoying rather fast. I like my PC box and would get another Windows PC without a second thought. Yeah, Apple has some nice products but it’s all still a tool. Rick Perry teams with Bryan Fischer’s AFA for prayer event

Saying “there is hope for America, and we will find it on our knees,” Texas Governor Rick Perry has invited other governors to join him in a “solemn gathering of prayer and fasting” in August in Houston, according to the event’s website.

Perry, who said recently he is considering a run for the Republican nomination to contest the presidency in 2012 against Barack Obama, has frequently made calls for prayer while governor.

“I sincerely hope you’ll join me in Houston on August 6th and take your place in Reliant Stadium with praying people asking for God’s forgiveness, wisdom and provision,” Perry wrote in materials promoting the event, called “The Response, a Call to Prayer for a Nation in Crisis.”

A message on the event’s website says it is in response to a historic crisis and calls it “a non-denominational, apolitical Christian prayer meeting,” with the goal “to rise up and make a sound that will be heard in heaven.”

The site says Perry “has invited all US governors as well as many other national and Christian political leaders.”

“Right now, America is in crisis,” Perry says in a message on the site. “We have been besieged by financial debt, terrorism, and a multitude of natural disasters. As a nation, we must come together, and call upon Jesus to guide us…”

Perry’s spokeswoman could not be reached for comment on the August event on Sunday.

Eric Bearse, a spokesman for The Response, said on Sunday: “The governor told the American Family Association about a month ago that we need to call Americans together for a time of prayer.”

Bearse said the Mississippi-based American Family Association, a conservative Christian activist group, is paying for the event, and admission will not be charged.

The Truth About Gun Shows, Al Qaeda, And Automatic Weapons

Mirroring common gun lobby talking points Williamson notes that “fully automatic” guns are highly restricted and regulated. Williamson’s account is in fact a highly misleading characterization of the accessibility of fully automatic weapons. The reality is that semi-automatic rifles, such as AK-47s or AR-15s, are widely available and sold at gun shows from private sellers that do not run background checks.

No. Fully automatic weapons are not semi automatic weapons. Media Matters is not correct at all. Fully automatic weapons are highly restricted.

Further conversion kits that make these rifles indistinguishable from machine guns are also widely available at gun shows.

Full conversion kits that include an auto sear must be registered as machine guns under federal law even if not installed in a weapon. No new machine guns have been registered in nearly twenty years.

There are partial kits available (usually without the auto sear) and numerous instruction manuals, most of which require some knowledge of machining and access to professional tools. Cheap “tricks” to make a weapon fully automatic usually result in numerous stoppages or even seriously damaging the weapon (and yourself) outright.

This is a lot of smoke.

For the time and trouble involved (you are adding steps of acquisition that could lead to blowing your cover) you would be better off buying the real thing on a the black market or from a corrupt Federale/military outfit in Mexico and smuggling them over. Unless done by a gunsmith, conversions are unreliable, possibly dangerous and should never ever be used in any weapon you intend to take into combat. A converted AR-15 would be my last choice of weapon. Far better to just use the original semi auto and learn how to shoot straight the first time around instead of “pray and spray.”

You would be an idiot to use them unless:

1. You had a Class 2 FFL and permission to convert the weapon

2. The conversion was done by an experienced gunsmith
