Anti-Gay Gay Preacher’s ‘Therapy’ Drove Man to Suicide

Religiously motivated anti-gay child abuse
US News • Views: 30,864

You may recall our story from last year about fundamentalist Christian leader George Rekers, who founded the politically active and virulently anti-gay Family Research Council with Dr. James Dobson — and then was caught on vacation with a “rent boy.”

It wasn’t the first case of an anti-gay preacher busted doing exactly what he preached against, and it won’t be the last, but this one was especially nasty because Rekers was also the founder of the bizarre and twisted “Feminine Boy Project,” a program that purported to “cure” boys as young as 4 years old of “effeminate tendencies.”

As I wrote in this post:

It’s religiously-motivated child abuse and quack pseudo-science serving the cause of hatred and bigotry.

Tonight on CNN at 10 pm ET, Anderson Cooper has a special show about the very young children whom Rekers abused with his brutal Pavlovian therapies during the 1970s — and the story is absolutely appalling: Therapy to change ‘feminine’ boy created a troubled man, family says.

Los Angeles (CNN) — Kirk Andrew Murphy seemed to have everything to live for. He put himself through school. He had a successful 8-year career in the Air Force. After the service, he landed a high profile position with an American finance company in India.

But in 2003 at age 38, Kirk Murphy took his own life.

A co-worker found him hanging from the fan of his apartment in New Delhi. His family has struggled for years to understand what happened.

“I used to spend so much time thinking, why would he kill himself at the age of 38? It doesn’t make any sense to me,” said Kirk’s sister, Maris Murphy. “What I now think is I don’t know how he made it that long.”

After Kirk’s death, Maris started a search that would uncover a dark family secret. That secret revealed itself during a phone conversation with her older brother Mark, who mentioned his distrust of any kind of therapy.

“Don’t you remember all that crap we went through at UCLA?” he asked her. Maris was too young to remember the details, but Mark remembered it vividly as a low point in their lives.

My guess is the "good" reverend will, when confronted with this, declare that the guy having a good life up until his suicide is "proof" that his method works, and that the family is blaming him for the suicide because they need an "easy target."

Off topic, but I need to vent.

My dad was not happy with the 3.0 result this semester. He's decided that a 3.0 means I'm useless, and is now bullying me. There were other circumstances he isn't willing to listen to (arrogant teacher, and another teacher that flat out lost a grade and didn't want to fix the issue).

He won't even let me state the fact that I got a 96% in a lab portion of one of those C's. His Autism is getting worse.

I will never understand this.
I'm a heterosexual, but why on earth would anyone want to "cure" someone because he loves men (or she loves women).

It's about as absurd as curing a guy of liking blondes and not brunettes.

Homosexual people are neither "sick" nor do the cause ANY harm to society. There's absolutely no reason why anyone should want to "change" them.

And I have absolutely no respect or tolerance for religious beliefs who insist on doing this.

Didn't hear about the Wisconsin GOP going for the hat trick? After passing a budget that contributed to the state's deficit in order to pass tax cuts in the name of "job creation," and going after the teachers unions, they've decided to totally throw caution to the wind and go after the fire and police unions.

It's not about a 'cure' or homosexuality, even for the vast majority of these homophobes.

It's all about groups and manipulating groups of people. If the leaders of these groups could were no longer 'leaders' they would move on and find another cause they could 'lead'. Followers are only too happy t follow- they belong to an identifiable group. Their need to belong is satisfied and the while, someone else is thinking for them.

That is what makes these leaders even more despicable.

They hate for profit and could care less for the ruin and devastation they leave behind.

the difference over a semester between a 3.0 and a 3.5 or higher is very little...but then I threatened my two college kids with cutting off their funds if their grades were not up to my expectation...they cruised through college with excellent grades...they knew I was very lenient but I expected them to do their best, and felt that there is enough pressure as it is to ever hound them or show disappointment...do the best you can because you live it, nobody else

Way to step into that nuclear minefield.

Last I heard, 6 Repubs who are eligible are up for recalls, with the votes in 40 days. If the Dems manage to take even half of those, then they retake power in the state Senate and Walker's agenda gets shredded. Especially when, at the beginning of next year, he himself will be eligible for recall.

My guess is the state GOP has decided to throw caution to the wind and see what they can ram through, figuring it's better than gambling on keeping the necessary 4 seats to remain in power.

What frightens me about Bachmann is not her insanity, because it's easy to ignore the harmlessly insane apocalyptic preacher on the corner, but the serious consideration a sizable minority of Americans give her. As a leader of a mob she is much more dangerous than as an isolated, ignorable, wanna-be rabble-rouser.

You do know that they were willing to do that? But that was never Scooter's real purpose, it was destroying the legal right to collective bargaining. First the teachers, next are the cops, soon every other Union will be outlawed and they can go back to having company towns & paying in script as my Father-In-Law grew up with.

Rekers is an evil quack bastard, and how much of a monster he is built right into this case study: before you ever get to his dubious motives, he designed a therapeutic structure that would fail, if not utterly cripple, his client. With an entry-level understanding of behaviorism, there's giant red flags in his methods--again, before you ever get to what he's trying to reshape--that suggest that either Rekers is utterly untrained as a behaviorist or he simply doesn't give a damn. I err on the side of not giving a damn: he chose to abuse a child to repair a minor behavioral feature, and in his homophobia and gender essentialism thought his work a success. Nominally, his "corrective" approach is based on Skinnerian operant conditioning--schemata of positive reinforcement (reward) and punishment: the application of a token system that "rewards" masculine behavior with candy, "punishes" feminine behavior with being spanked when his dad got home. It's eight kinds of bullshit; the design contradicts most of the basic premises and cautions of the behaviorist methodolgy.

Punishment is the least successful operant method, for it is the most likely to be overgeneralized: the subject often fails to pair the behavior and the stimulus and thus learn the desired lesson. Instead punishment gets associated with a broad spectrum of behaviors--a scatterplot of every contextual factor that might have led to the condition of punishment. If one wishes to use punishment, the key is immediacy: rapid-fire cause/effect. The longer the time gap between behavior and response, the more likely the conditioning will be overgeneralized. Second, punishment needs to be short and consistent. Variance, again, creates the likelihood that the subject will try and discern why Case A produces less punishment than Case B...not only will the subject overgeneralize, but also begin shaping multiple behavioral changes.

Third and paramount...all of the above is built on animal models...even Skinner, who could be very tough-minded, recognized that to use these techniques on people required that they had a full cognitive grasp of cause and effect. Sapience and imagination expands the realm of overgeneralization out of the tangible and into the project and speculated.

Looking at the shape of Rekers "therapy," that poor child never had a chance: all that pain and fear, bewildered over why his father would hit him so much, grasping at straws to form theories of how to make it stop. Rekers won a single battle for his stupid cause and left that child to a lifetime of wallowed in doubt and fear as what was wrong with him.

/spit

No that can't happen.

But if you take away a unions right to collectively bargain, or greatly limit them... and then you force the union members to have to vote to renew the union every year.... the union will die out on its own because it will no longer be able to serve the function it was intended to preform when it was created.

Also to be serious, the purpose of a union is first and foremost to insure that the people working in that field are getting paid a reasonable amount for the work they do.

Given the way the middle class and union membership have flatlined simultaneously in this country [Link: www.observertoday.com...] I think you're butting the blame for people "hording money" in exactly the wrong place.

Must be cowboy day. Spent the morning unloading a truck of obsolete cowboy gear a wester-themed restaurant gave to our Habitat thrift store. Told the volunteer co-ordinater she had enough chaps and lariats to start a Village People tribute group.

It the most basic level they function identically.

Econ 101: The three things needed to produce goods are land, labor and capital. Corporations are designed to allow the aggregation of capital, either in big chunks (private) or little chunks(publicly held). Unions are aggregations of labor. Governments can be considered aggregations of land. It's all the same, only difference is who gets screwed and who does the screwing.

That could have been me. I am only two years younger then the "sissy boy", and I had exactly the same behaviors as a child. My father gave me "whippings" that left bruises up and down my buttocks, legs and lower back just as they descibed in the show.

I managed to get competant counseling before I did anything stupid, fortunately. I still spent hours crying while my wife held me.

Damn.

I appreciate that. Of course, it wasn't your fault to begin with. My parents are products of their time, and they thought they were doing the right thing. Taking a leather belt with a v shaped steel tip to your kids leaves marks that don't go away immediately, though.

I played with barbie dolls, I played dress up (even with girl's clothing a few times!) and all sorts of "effeminate" things. Admittedly, I liked dinosaurs and playing with toy guns and spaceships and stuff like that, but the girly stuff was there.

Now? I'm one of the straightest straight guys I know. I like trucks, playing in the mountains (hiking, skiing, climbing), lifting weights, high voltage electricity, rock and roll and any number of guy things. I'm married (to a woman) and have never been interested in guys.

So, the thing that truly horrifies me is the pointlessness of it. The possibility that, even in their twisted, evil world view, there might have been nothing to fix (there was nothing to fix anyway, just to be clear). They didn't even know how to identify what they were trying to eradicate. They had nothing beyond bigotry and violence.

Kevin Williamson of National Review takes Media Matters to the woodshed:

The hapless hacks at Media Matters, with an unfortunate assist from Cliff May right here on the Corner, are off the races on my recent post about machineguns. Here’s Media Matters:

Mirroring common gun lobby talking points Williamson notes that “fully automatic” guns are highly restricted and regulated. Williamson’s account is in fact a highly misleading characterization of the accessibility of fully automatic weapons. The reality is that semi-automatic rifles, such as AK-47s or AR-15s, are widely available and sold at gun shows from private sellers that do not run background checks. Further conversion kits that make these rifles indistinguishable from machine guns are also widely available at gun shows.

Here are the facts: Conversion kits making semiautomatic weapons fully automatic are illegal to buy, sell, or possess, unless one has a federal license for possessing fully automatic weapons (and not always then, either). Under federal law, a machinegun conversion kit is precisely the same thing as a machinegun. It is illegal to possess the parts to perform such a conversion, even if the conversion hasn’t been done — if you own the parts, you own the gun, so far as ATF is concerned. It is illegal to attempt to purchase those parts. It is illegal to offer to sell those parts. It is illegal to move those parts across state lines. If such things are being sold, at a gun show or anywhere else, then a crime is being committed.

But I doubt that they are commonly sold. If it is so common, why are arrests not being made? If this is true, shouldn’t we be investigating the ATF?

The Media Matters hack says that such kits are widely available online and then provides a link. Perhaps he was assuming that his drooling and contemptible readers would not follow it: The link he provides is not a link to conversion kits for sale; rather, it is to a collection of how-to articles. There is a difference between selling a book about conversions and selling the parts necessary to perform them. (Guns attract myths like few other tools; suffice it to say you can’t make an Uzi out of granddad’s squirrel rifle and a twist-tie.) Depending on your view of the First Amendment, the government may or may not be permitted to suppress such information. But in either case, a manual for performing a conversion is no more a conversion kit than a copy of The Anarchist’s Cookbook is a bomb or a Julia Child tome is a soufflé. You need the parts. But Media Matters deals in distortions and half-truths, because that is what they are paid to do.

He won't even let me state the fact that I got a 96% in a lab portion of one of those C's. His Autism is getting worse.

At one time left handed people, in a sinister attempt to correct a fault in their essential being, were forced to use their right (not as in correct) hand as their dominant hand. This affected them not only digitally and physically, but mentally.

My dad went through Catholic school in the 50s, and he got a lot of grief for being a lefty. They tried to change me over in the early 80s, but didn't have the energy to try very hard, or recourse to hand-smacking.

The survivalist gold market is a joke. re: #194 3eff Jeff

What truly frightens and disgusts me about this is thinking back to my childhood. Every time I hear what he was doing described, I remember doing all of those things myself.

One of my old coworkers has a son who just worships his big sister and her friends. Some years ago, they had a sleepover, and allowed little brother come in and play makeovers with them. Dad was unaware of this until he knocked on the door with popcorn and cocoa and was greeted by his five-year-old son in eyeshadow, mascara, blush, lipstick, gelled hair and glittery nails yelling, "Daddy, look, I'm fabulous!"

Daddy was laughing his ass off on Monday about it. Said, "I was exactly like that, I had to do whatever the girls were doing."

I think about that, and how loving and accepting he is with his kids, and I think of the parents out there who would cause harm to that little boy out of fear and Idon'tknowwhat...

Shit. Life. I don't know, dude.

This is borderline blackmail!

[Link: hosted.ap.org...]

I thought he wanted an apology, got one and would lay off. I guess I should have known better:

Conservative activist Andrew Breitbart of the website BigGovernment.com tells NBC's "Today" show he considers the image "an insurance policy" against attacks from Weiner, who on Monday admitted the crotch photo was of him.

Breitbart told NBC Tuesday that if Weiner wants to open himself to further investigation, "there are a lot of women" who could come forward. Asked directly if he considered the purported unpublicized picture an insurance policy, Breitbart replied, "I don't like to think of it that way."

Then on O'Reilly hints that people mean to physically hurt him, well O'Reilly suggests this but he kind of confirms it ...

Bill O’Reilly Is Worried For Andrew Breitbart: ‘Do You Fear For Your Life?’
[Link: www.mediaite.com...]

The nature of the scandal seemed to turn on O’Reilly’s threat censors, and he asked, earnestly, if Breitbart feared for his life. “I don’t want to talk about what precautions I take, but I certainly get threats left and right.” O’Reilly told him he had been in the industry long enough to have gotten a few threats himself. “Be careful,” O’Reilly warned him, ending the segment on a somber note that served to remind the audience that this scandal has consequences on the lives and loved ones of those involved far beyond a litany of unfunny “Weiner” puns.

Quite Concur. Anthony Weiner was supposed to be the Liberal Tiger, but he turned out to be a turkey.

I don't really give two sh!^$ about Congressman Weiner's personal life. But after his presser yesterday when ABC was pushing their interview earlier in the week, looking at his previous insistence on the scandal crap, the guy is just a two faced creep. What truly frightens and disgusts me about this is thinking back to my childhood. Every time I hear what he was doing described, I remember doing all of those things myself.

Funny. It makes me think of my own childhood. I'm female. When I was a little girl, I played with the boys.

It was normal -- most of my cousins that are close in age to me are boys and we grew up together. Most of the neighbors on the street I lived on were boys. I grew up playing baseball and football, shooting beer cans off fence posts with a BB gun, climbing trees, and doing distinctly masculine things. I still liked my more traditional girlie clothes and toys and I was a Girl Scout, but let's face it -- playing a game of baseball out in the street is way more fun than an imaginary tea party.

I'm straight. I've lived with the same guy for over a decade. I'd still hate to think what these people would have thought of me as a girl.

His Autism is getting worse.

at the end of the day, you have the power, not your parents, it's not their life, it's yours.

don't explain yourself, because that doesn't work, just refuse to take the bullshit. it's your life, and your father is just another abusive human trying to exert his will on you. Keep that in mind, and don't play the fear game he's playing. You wouldn't take it from a stranger, don't take it from him.

Sometimes parents need to be confronted with the reality of their children as independent beings. Their ego has a hard time with it. Sometimes that takes leaving them in the dust for a while and moving away.

It's like Clinton: I don't hate him for the initial "crime," I hate him for the coverup. Had he just come clean on Day One, declared "Yes, I made a mistake, I'm sorry, I won't do it again," I think a lot of folks would have forgiven him. It would have had a day or two of play, would have gotten him a bit of bad press, and that would have been it.

Instead, he waited over a week to fess up, lying the whole time, and now he's taking his licks. Will it end his career? Don't know, but I certainly think he should seriously consider resignation.

I rather disliked Clinton for the Lewinsky thing, for a couple of reasons I've listed here before.

What Weiner did, in my eyes, does not rise (or, lower to the depths) of what Clinton did, but a long shot.

Well, I admit that I wasn't old enough during "Monicagate" to really form much of an opinion. I can only really speak in retrospect, particularly as a recovering wingnut. And even when I had my head firmly entrenched in my backside, I believed that Clinton's biggest crime was the coverup. I don't truly approve of infidelity on the part of our elected officials, but they're only human.

We should protect the fundamental right of parents to have the final say in what is best for their child’s well‐being. We believe parents should receive advance notice of any medicine or medical treatment their child may be offered or seek and that parents should have the right to consent – or withhold consent – for any such treatment.

Clinton was the las of dying breed. Just google around for stories about the disappearing "blue dogs" and shrinking of the DLC.

The DLC is shrinking because it was almost entirely centered on Clinton. Once he left office their influence waned. And the much vaunted Clinton machine got caught flat footed and was shown to be obsolete when Obama ran circles around them.

There are still plenty of people who could be described social liberals and economic moderates or conservatives that are Democrats. That hasn't changed.

He won't even let me state the fact that I got a 96% in a lab portion of one of those C's. His Autism is getting worse.

I wouldn't have gotten a friendly reception at home with a 3.0. Consider it a learning experience, and assume your dad is more right about things than you think right now. True, but in the case of yfrog they had a real security issue at hand that was well documented, and thus enacted changes to make the service "safer" (which I can't confirm it is, but at least some superficial stuff was done).

Sure. All you have to do is look at the sheer number of anti-abortion bills introduced in state legislatures this year -- over 500 in the first three months of 2011.

The Republicans are simply not a party that caters to social moderates.

I disagree with this.

During the 1990s there were groups of people whose sole purpose was to attempt to destroy President Clinton, both personally and politically. Individuals like Richard Mellon Scaife, Jerry Falwell, Joseph Farah (there's a familiar name, eh?), R. Emmitt Tyrell who essentially made up crap out of thin air to get Clinton removed. Things like accusing the Clinton White House of covering up Hillary Clinton murdering Vince Foster to hide their extramarital affair. Things like feeding and supporting the extremist "militia" movements, which culminated in the actions of individuals like Terry Nichols, Timothy McVeigh, and Eric Rudolph deciding to take the law into their own hands and commit acts of domestic terrorism.

re: #387 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

Clinton's breaching of his marriage vows is between him and Hillary.

But, he did two other things too:

1) Abused his power - as the most senior executive in the US he engaged in a personal relationship with one of the most junior employees of the US. This sort of behavior is seriously damaging to the ethics of the entire system, as the President sets an example for the rest of his executives. Executives have enormous influence over the future of a young person's career and life, and this ought to be respected.

2) He was compromised in his duty - because of the distraction, which was immense, Clinton's ability to carry out his duties as executive became difficult, and it has been reported that during this time his management of the Office declined. Furthermore, there was a risk that the office of the President could have been compromised, because Clinton was engaged in sexual acts while actively doing foreign policy (yes.)

Weiner sounds like a guy who compulsively acted out a sexual fantasy - not uncommon at all. It should be addressed - but again I think that is the right and responsibility of the spouse and not something for us, the public, to take on.

That is not an anti-immigrant stance, Charles. Rather it is advocacy of English-Immersion education, which has had success as an education method. Please do not read the relative of Texas onto Illinois.

A friend of mine taught in the local public schools. Actually, teaching English to immigrant students can be a challenge because many of them come here with little formal schooling and, of course, funding is always an issue. I live in a large hispanic area and these kids need the advantages that only learning English will give them in this country. Without it they will not succeed in school. Too many are ending up in prison as it is.

Frankly, in our area, I don't see it as anti-immigrant, but pro-immigrant. We have to help them. Too many good minds are lost.

I kinda figure it's because there is only one party if you want to be elected in Texas these days. A lot of moderate Dems in the south switched to Repub this past election. Perry seems fringe to me--his secession crap comes to mind--that to think he was a Dem just seems a bit weird. But then again I'm not from Texas.

Perry is an asshole of the lowest rent possible. Sonograms for women wanting abortions? That law just passed here, and he labeled it an "emergency bill." As if our lack of education funding had to take a back seat. He's not "fringe," he's the cookie-cutter Texas Republican. Trust me.

Left wing extremists (at least during the past four decades) tend to have rather colorful parades, sometimes clog up streets, and every so often throw a pie (or, if they are feeling really frisky), some paint. Also, they are almost universally shunned by the political establishment.

Right wing extremists, on the other hand, do things like shoot doctors, form groups with the goal of overthowing the government (including using violent methods), and hang out with white nationalist groups.
And in many cases they ARE the political establishment.

I'm honestly hoping by this point that whichever candidate the GOP reluctantly puts up will be soundly handed his ass come next November, dealing the party the sort of electoral body blow it needs to finally wake up and shake off the remaining dregs of the Reaganites.

However, my worst fear is that the GOP will pull off a close win, due to other factors (economy, price of gas, foreign policy, etc) and feel that dragging the party back in the Dark Ages has yielded huge dividends. If that happens, it's time to pack it up and set out in search of fairer shores. I hear Antarctica is nice this time of year...

Other parts of the state, of course, the ELLs are almost all Spanish speakers, so your options are far more flexible.

The problem comes in when decisions are being made based on ideology rather than workable best practice. (Both right and left do this, and both claim that the research supports them, and not the other guy.)

The GOP has been completely dysfunctional for decades. It's just that no one ever noticed until Obama got elected and the far right went completely batshit insane.

The Dems had their big come-to-Jesus moment back in the 80's after Mondale got humiliated. They jettisoned the hippies and the far left kooks and pretty much marginalized them on a national level back then. It will take a defeat of similar proportions for the GOP to finally get rid of the lunatics.

Yep.

This is a good one though. Bachmann has decided that part of the health care bill that discusses school-based clinics (she calls them sex clinics) would lead to students being whisked away during school hours for abortions without parent consent. OMG. Totally plausible.

[Link: blogs.citypages.com...]

And, BARF...Michelle Duggar, woman of the year?

The Conservative Political Action Committee held its annual conference over the weekend. CPAC also held a “Woman of the Year” luncheon honoring Michelle Duggar, star of TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting.” Yes, apparently being very fertile will make you woman of the year. Question – what if Mrs. Duggar and her husband were people of color? What if they had hit upon hard times and had to rely on the state for assistance? Hmm – I think conservatives have another phrase for that, and it sure as hell isn’t “Woman of the Year.”
A group of students enrolled in Boston Public Schools will go before the City Council tomorrow to ask for sex ed and free condoms in all high schools in the city. The superintendent is “reluctant” to expand condom availability beyond the nine schools that offer them in health centers, and the students also face pushback from at least two Catholic groups. (Hmm, isn’t this PUBLIC school, though?)

When you live and die by the soundbite, it becomes extremely difficult to explain a belief/policy/idea in 5 minutes when the average listener has a 1 minute attention span. Hence why "death panels" gets the sort of momentum that explaining why you need a panel to decide whether a procedure is worth the cost in order to bring spending down.

It can be rough. I had a kid who simply got no formal schooling for about three years, for reasons that may have been political or family-related--the caseworker basically just said, "I can't tell you. But this is what happened."

At Newcomer High in SF, they teach a high-level English immersion program part of the day, but also teach subjects--history, science et al--in Spanish and Chinese so the kids don't fall behind while getting their English on. I talked to the guy who taught one of the Spanish courses, and he said you had a real gap between the kids from farther south into South America, and the kids from Mexico or El Salvador--because the kids from farther south were from middle-class families who had the money to come legally, on a plane, and the kids from Central American were usually peasants who had, in some cases, simply walked across the border somewhere.

The South Americans were better prepared academically, picked up English faster, and mocked the Central American kids for being hicks and trash.

The Asian kids are hugely academically prepared, for the most part.

As far as I have been able to discover, only the CT GOP website actually brags that their state GOP leaders are not totally against gays and abortion rights:

Despite that fact that elected Connecticut Republicans at the highest levels have been uniformly pro-choice – the Governor, former U.S. Reps. Nancy Johnson and Rob Simmons, current U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays - Democrats have regularly used the threat of banning abortion to mobilize their troops. The law authorizing Civil Unions sailed through the State Legislature and was signed by the Governor – but nonetheless, the liberal legions continue to beat the drums of gay bigotry.

And that is from 3 years ago. I don't know if any GOP site would do that today. Can anyone find an example?

Has there been a case of leftist extremists in the US engaging in bombings since the early 1980s with the ALF/ELF environmentalists? Other than them, I can't think of any violent groups unless you move back to the 70s with the Weathermen movement.

ELF/ALF has continued with arson attacks, at least into the early part of the last decade.

People often also point to the Black Block's acting out at protests. They broke a lot of glass at assorted G8 meetings, but violence has been very limited and not at all organized. (Trying to punch a cop. That sort of dimwitted thing.)

Property damage has been the crazy left's cup of tea for some time now.

OT and related to a couple threads down... a few lingering questions in my head about a potential single-payer system in the US. Apologies if it sounds, well...Tea Partyish.

1. Who will determine what will be "covered?"
2. Will private hospitals be allowed or would they all fall under the public umbrella (e.g. UK NHS?)
3. How will abuse be prevented?
4. How will single-payer health care promote better health?

Yeah. Just want to get that out there. Where I live, the regional "role model" for health care is Singapore.

I don't like that argument, either.

To be honest, though, I am more receptive to the argument that you guys -- who I'd call "thinking conservatives," and not in a negative way, either -- enable people like Palin, Santorum and Bachmann.

Of the 10 potential Republican candidates, four are what I'd consider completely unfit for the Presidency: Palin, Santorum, Bachmann and Pawlenty. Not a single one of the four is from a "deep south" state. (Huckabee, obviously, fails that test, but he's not running.)

Somebody is putting these clowns in power, and there just aren't enough Democrats "crossing over" to do that.

Yep. I've said in the past that I've been proud of my votes for Olympia Snowe and, earlier, William Cohen.

Today, I wouldn't vote for either of them, specifically on account of who they bring to the table with them.

You are who you are and value judgments like your dad's just show his lack of confidence in himself.

Some people evidently do not trust their own parenting skills. They end up getting ripped off by confidence men like Rekers. re: #163 Charles

I'm just horrified after watching that show.

What these people did to children is flat out evil.

And it was presided over by a self-hating gay man, who undoubtedly was getting his own rocks off, while torturing "effeminate" children.

If anyone ever asks why I'm so utterly disgusted with the right wing, this story is your answer. Evil.

One would think, with all that bluster about the innate superiority of their morals and ethics, that parents who get caught up in scams like NARTH would have more confidence in their own parenting skills.

Instead, they end up exploited by people like Rekers, and heaping years of abuse on their own children in efforts to get them to conform. Nauseating.

Andrew Breitbart is a lying right wing con artist, who happened to be right once. He's damaged and destroyed many innocent people's reputations for political reasons, and being right this one time doesn't change that.

It's the Hilary Tamar question.

(Professor Tamar is the narrator of Sarah Caudwell's murder mysteries. We do not know Professor Tamar's gender, let alone sexuality. As a result, very casual interactions:

"Would it occur to you, if you had just spend the night with a beautiful young man, that his name was Ned?", one of the characters demands.

"In my case, the possibility is remote," Tamar answers.

Take on odd multiple possible meanings.)
