Fact Checking Breitbart’s Statement on the Leaked Photo

Count the lies
Media • Views: 58,130

Here’s Andrew Breitbart’s statement on the photo that was leaked by radio shock jocks Opie and Anthony:

Earlier today, a photograph resembling one that I had withheld from publication in the Weinergate saga was released without my knowledge or permission.

Prior to the publication of our story on biggovernment.com and bigjournalism.com this past Monday morning, it was necessary to show the pictures I had received from our source to several news producers, including several at major news networks, to prove that the additional material I described really did exist, which some have continued to doubt.

This morning, I showed a photograph, which our source claims Weiner sent her, to radio hosts “Opie and Anthony” of the Sirius XM radio network on my mobile device. Somehow, without my knowledge or permission, apparently a picture was taken of my mobile device, and subsequently published by Opie (Gregg Hughes) on Twitter.

His co-host, Anthony (Anthony Cumia), stated today:

“In regards to the photo of Anthony Weiner that was leaked by members of The Opie And Anthony show on 6/8, I want to make it clear that Andrew Breitbart had no knowledge that this photo was being made public. A phone with the photo was being displayed and a camera in the studio caught it. It was then uploaded to twitter [sic], again, without Andrew Breitbarts [sic] knowledge.”

I regret that this occurred.

There are at least two big lies in this statement. First:

…it was necessary to show the pictures I had received from our source to several news producers, including several at major news networks, to prove that the additional material I described really did exist, which some have continued to doubt.

In fact, two nights ago, Andrew Breitbart went out drinking with Anthony and several others — and according to Anthony, showed the picture to numerous people, even leaving his laptop computer unattended with the picture on the screen for long periods of time.

One of those people was right wing flamethrower Ann Coulter. Here’s Anthony’s photo of Coulter reacting to the picture; notice that his computer is apparently there, but Breitbart is nowhere to be seen.

Last time I checked, Ann Coulter was not a “news producer.” How many other people saw the photo that night? It’s anybody’s guess, but claiming that he only showed it to “news producers” is a big fat lie.

The next lie:

This morning, I showed a photograph, which our source claims Weiner sent her, to radio hosts “Opie and Anthony” of the Sirius XM radio network on my mobile device.

Again, this is far from the whole story, because in fact Breitbart passed his phone around to the entire studio. He didn’t show it just to Opie and Anthony — he showed it to everyone in the studio, as Opie explains in this video statement:

Youtube Video

If Andrew Breitbart really did expect the photo to remain private, after showing it to just about anyone who wanted to see it, including everyone in the studio of a pair of shock jocks known for staging radical pranks, the question is, “Just how dumb is Andrew Breitbart?”

On the bright side it's nice to see O&A getting some media attention again, even better if it's at Breitbart's expense. They had some difficulty transitioning from stunt based radio stuff (that lawyers won't allow anymore) to more sedate format. They've been doing great shows over the past year or so even with Sirius management shitting all over them.

Perhaps Breitbart really didn't want the photos released.

This proves in addition to being a first class jerk, he really is an idiot.

He had to to know the show was beinmg video taped and he showed the photo not only to the two idiots, but t6o a roomful of people he didn't know.

So much for the 'elevation' of Andrew Breitbart.

Breitbart knew what he was doing. The photo was gonna get out, one way or another. This way, he can claim "shock," but assert that his "word" was kept, that he didn't release the photo himself, others did. Not as though he's gonna get too broken up over the fallout from it.

According to Wright, officers also woke his three young children, ages 3, 7, and 11, and put them in a Stockton police patrol car with him. Officers then searched his house.

"They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids," Wright said.

As it turned out, the person law enforcement was looking for - Wright's estranged wife - was not there.

Wright said he later went to Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston and Stockton Police Department, but learned the city of Stockton had nothing to do with the search warrant.

SWAT style break- the- door- down raids happen every day in this nation and quite frequently, they have the wrong house and someone dies...

A judge just ruled a week or so ago that citizens have no right to resist the police when they come calling- even when they have the wrong house.

Yes. I posted a page on it earlier. Charles was kind enough to post a correction while I was out and not aware that my post was no longer valid. The story has been changing throughout the day, but it still doesn't look very good as far as I can tell.

What the hell is the Department of Education doing with a SWAT team?...why did that SWAT team execute a dynamic entry warrant on a home where the suspect no longer lived?...why was a dynamic entry warrant even served for what seems to be suspicion that the women lied on a federal loan form?...did a judge actually sign off on this?

But it's an effective campaign strategy! We've made everyone in this country believe they're millionaires (by inflating house prices), so this will win votes. (It's like the popular outrage over the "death tax" which, IMHO, is one of the fairest taxes. And it will only affect people with estates over $3.5 Million, which is a very small percentage of voters.)

This was partisan hatred latching on to faux public Puritanism for no other reason than destroying a politician who was effective on the other side.

You think Breitbart isn't a liar? His whole 'career' is predicated on deceit!

The Weiner story does nothing to exonerate him.

As much as I find Weiner despicable, Breitbart is an even bigger worm because he doesn't care who he hurts or whose life he ruins. In fact, he revels in those broken lives.

Sorry, the Government did:

It's not unusual for returning soldiers to check weapons when flying on a commercial airline if the weapons have been certified as unloaded, said Joe Davis, a spokesman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars' Washington office, who was critical of the fee.

"A $200 bill for extra baggage by a government-contracted airline is the worst welcome home any soldier could receive," Davis said. He acknowledged the troops would be reimbursed but said, "The shock of even being charged is enough to make most servicemen and women simply shake their heads and wonder who or what it is they are protecting."

What do they want? Money to be handed over without receipts to verify the charges? I support our armed forces as much as anyone, but we all need to be respectful of taxpayer dollars.

I'm sure y'all remember the famous Jimmy Carter Playboy interview. He'd agree with you:

Because I'm just human and I'm tempted and Christ set some almost impossible standards for us. The Bible says, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." Christ said, I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery. I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times.... This is something that God recognizes, that I will do and have done, and God forgives me for it. But that doesn't mean that I condemn someone who not only looks on a woman with lust but who leaves his wife and shacks up with somebody out of wedlock. Christ says, don't consider yourself better than someone else because one guy screws a whole bunch of women while the other guy is loyal to his wife. The guy who's loyal to his wife ought not to be condescending or proud because of the relative degree of sinfulness.

Yeah, and compared to Ron Paul, Tom Pawlenty is a moderate. Not really impressing us here.

Tom might be a moderate. His brother Tim is a different story.

I think Weiner shows all the characteristics of being part of his society and our age. He is simply no "better" than many people. His wife has a good reason to be thoroughly angered with him, but I expect many of those who are trying to crow over his foolishness are guilty of the same or worse types of impropriety.

And just in case anybody claims otherwise:

Weiner did something slimy and I do consider it a form of cheating in his marriage, at least emotionally.

I do not consider it a matter for public consumption. It is insanity to expect moral purity from our public servants when we as a society cannot expect it of ourselves.

It's not so much the moral purity angle that bothers me as much as the mindblowing fact that people such as Vitter and Weiner and Gingrich and Gore and Edwards and countless others in the public eye show such a mind-blowing lack of judgment, given that they KNOW they're constantly under the watch of thousands of sleazebags just waiting to be the one who busts the story of their infidelity open.

It's also part of our society for blatant hypocrisy to be the norm. Newt Gingrich feels no shame about going after Clinton for infidelity while he was being unfaithful himself. And he gets forgiven for both his infidelity and the hypocrisy by many.

One lady admonished Weiner's behavior with something like "He shouldn't be doing that sort of thing if he's supposed to be a role model for all of us to follow".

Agree. When I wrote "society" I meant that high level, powerful set to Weiner belongs, which frankly wish to run like the older European aristocratic set but find themselves in the Puritanical/Victorian American web of social neuroses.

I care.

But the thing with politicians and sex scandals - it's been going on forever, and having known and worked with several politicians over the years, it's my opinion that it has to do with the massive ego required to be in politics in the first place, more than anything else. Some expect all sorts of favors in other ways; for others, it's their sex appeal.

It's not in any way a given that having an affair is less stupid than doing online wang pictures. That's an assumption you're making.

That some people manage to cover up their affairs doesn't mean that that's something you can depend on. Many women who've had affairs with men have blackmailed them, revealed it at inopportune times, and necessitated a constant coverup. And since affairs are more momentous things, the public treats them more momentously.

Somehow, the only criteria you're using for 'stupid' is the likelihood of getting caught.

Why?

It was phrased in such a way as to not be worth responding too. I saw what you meant, and that you were being a prick about it. It did not deserve an answer. It still doesn't.

I think morals are important, but the very first thing that should exclude anyone from senior public service is stupidity.

What a fine and upstanding sentiment! Of course, that means that Alexander Hamilton, FDR, Thomas Jefferson, JFK, possibly Abe Lincoln and a whole of other folks would be dissmissed by your conflation of stupidity(actually, incompetance on the job) with moral failure. I do not conflate incompetence with failure of private moral virtue.

You don't seem to give any weight to the stupidity part and only judge (underwhelmed I believe you said) the degree to which you think an act qualifies as "sex".

By all accounts, the congressman is actually quite intelligent. So is former Governor Arnold etc etc...

What they have in common is an unspoken and unacknowleded assumption of male sexual perogative. Our society is schizophrenic in this regard. Male sexual conquests are celebrated in print and on tv and in movies(guys who score are to be emulated. Women who score are sluts and whores). We act shocked shocked when guys do it real life. Our society has conditioned men to act like boorish rakes for decades. My only wonder is that we are suprised by it any more.

Do you not care if someone with influence to affect your life seems to have no grasp of potential consequences?

Amazingly, I have the ability to distinguish private behavior apart from his job competency. Had this been something that actually went into the range of despicable, (think John Edwards and wife with cancer), then I allow that character questions would override that, but sexting does not even begin to rise to that level in my judgement.

Now, please sod off and bother somebody else.

I think it can be argued that in this case it is both. Just the simple fact of making a Breitbart the darling of the right overnight is damaging enough to others, but as far as damaging to himself goes, I don't care although I feel sorry for his family.

Two thoughts:

re: #71 triple

With Breitbart's track record, it's usually a good bet that if his gums are flapping, he's lying. It's just so happens that, this time, there was a "perfect storm": Weiner was lying his ass off and Breitbart just happened to be telling the truth (mostly).

Let's face it: personally, Weiner is a sleaze, IMO. Does that make me want to repudiate defending him and giving Breitbart an apology? Hell no...Weiner was worth the benefit of the doubt, Breitbart was not (and still isn't).

re: #230 Naso Tang

I love how you simultaneously occuse people of not getting nuance and pursuing tangents. It's spiffy.

Yes, that is actually what I said, but I am saying that this one shows a form of stupidity that was so obviously self destructive that it could not be attributed, as might be the case, to a momentary unplanned lack of self control.

The vast majority of affairs are not momentary unplanned lack of self control, though, but continuing things.

And I have no idea why you're positing that someone doing something highly risky is somehow indicative of being less self-destructive, based on the idea that he lacked self control in the moment.

Contrary to the prudes who need physical intercourse for something to be sexually bad, I consider these planned and deliberate acts to show an even worse mindset for someone in his position.

Yes, I really do get that you think this. I'm asking you why it shows a worse mindset than someone who has moments where he loses self control enough to sleep with someone

It's not like having a fling on a junket is really a momentary lack of self control. You don't just trip and wind up with your face in the bartender.

Why do you feel the need to throw in the personal insult of 'prude' while you're talking about this? Just makes you feel good, or do you honestly thing your argument is stronger when you're jabbing at other people like that?

Well that's a logical disaster if I've ever seen one. You're just going to blindly defend whoever Breitbart targets next, regardless if they're actually innocent or not? How about doing some critical thinking and deciding for yourself if they're innocent.

Ahem.

...your credentials as the Pope of Critical Thinking are suspect.

With full intent of being pedantic and insulting, you aren't demonstrating Critical Thinking by any definition. You're condemning others for not "thinking critically" --but contextually you've asserted no claims demonstrating rigor of thought or formal argumentaton. Adornments aside, you've just been asserting that you're right and anyone that contradicts you must be dumb/irrational/wrong-thinking.

I retort with a formal construction of why you're full of it:

1. It does not follow from a condemnation of Andrew Breitbart that Anthony Weiner is less cupable in any way. You're the only one making an assertion that this is present in discussion. Continued umbrage about a position you have projected onto others is a straw man.

2. It is logically consistent to thoroughly vet and independently confirm any assertion made by an individual or organization with an easily-traceable record of dishonesty. You keep glossing over this.

3. Serial presentation of data reinforced skepticism: the first offered "proof" was extremely weak, and justified processing of alternatives...which exactly what happened. Your impression based on his conduct in a press conference is neither critical thinking nor critical analysis, and any sense of validity to that impression is retroactive.

4. Check the Magic Honesty Karma Scoreboard. Consistent hack lies on his websites plus consistent hoax "journalism" minus one true story equals still a hack liar. I see no justification for treating each BB story as occurring in a void, any more than I would for a tabloid or the Socialist Worker's Weekly.

5. Continuous with (2) and (4), there is every reason to remain skeptical of any further and future assertions made or endorsed by Andrew Breitbart: one is not a meaningful trend on which to predict anything.

6. Recent developments suggest that continued wariness of Andrew Breitbart are in order, what with the whole "...making an elaborate public display of making a moral decision not to reveal a photo of the Rep's penis, then doing so to shock and amuse his friends, fellow pundits, and the production team on a morning radio show."

Two thoughts:

Firsts, starting a sentence with "I think it can be argued that..." is a tell. It means that everything that comes after the "that" is something you aren't really convinced of.

Second, I wasn't asking about Weiner. I was asking about the more general principle. Assume there's a public official that from time to time does something blindingly stupid that hurts no one but himself. Does that, in your mind, disqualify him from public service?

I will take your literary suggestion to heart, although in this context, answering a question with two options, I think it can be argued that saying I think it can be argued was appropriate enough, so to speak.

However, I think it can be argued that there is no general answer to your question. Politicians do stupid things all the time. The problem is that usually the public forgets very fast because they focus on the next stupid thing from another one. Sara Palin gets away with it all the time, then someone like Bachmann takes the next one.

This is a different category. It shows something fundamentally wrong with the man's character.

As always, whining about downdings will get you more downdings.

Why are you so obsessed with them?

Actually I'm trying to make the point that I don't care. I'm yearning for the good old days when they meant something. I don't know who changed the rules and I don't think it was Charles. We used to give anyone hell for doing that because it was what all the shy little lurkers and socks would do before they had enough courage to say something.

I think it is rude outside of exceptional circumstances to indicate you have read a post and disagree but can't be bothered to say why.

But according to webrankings depending on toolbars installed by little old ladies in Peoria who need to call their grandson every time they turn on the internets, it's gone down 20%!

The role of religion had been central in American society from its founding to the present day, and remains a contentious topic in American life and politics. Passions run high on issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, and the “ground-zero mosque.”

No need to go further. Spit as much as you please.

Some kind of transference, maybe, because the president won't give them the scandal they crave?

You know, I didn't think about that angle, but it makes a little sense. Both Obama and Weiner are young and forceful Democrats, butting heads with the GOP, both of them married, the Obamas have children and (now we know) Weiner and his wife are expecting a child.

Weiner did enough to earn the most of the scorn he's been getting over all of this, but some in the GOP are piling on, IMO, even though they've had (and have) members in Congress that are just as bad continuing to serve. Not that that excuses any of the creeps, but I think it should be their constituents and/or their Congressional peers that decide whether they stay or go, not smear artists like Breitbart, not pundits, and not the court of public opinion (of people outside their districts).

I've thought about this before this situation. I think the press is hungry fro scandal and President Obama won't give them one because he's a decent man and not corrupt. I think they really, really miss White House scandals, but they will take whatever they can get. That and touting every outlier poll showing him losing to Mitt Romney, when every other poll has him beating every possible GOP candidate.

415 ingenu  Wed, Jun 8, 2011 5:22:11pm

Breitbart was on a C-Span call-in program. He received a call from someone who claimed, as I recall, to have worked at a store that rented and sold videos. The caller started naming the porn videos Clarence Thomas had gotten from him. Breitbart interrupted and kept saying: "You're a creep!" until the caller went away.

I think Breitbart was right then. He now deserve to have what he said to the caller said about him.

re: #258 celticdragon

It was Naso Tangs original (and insulting) question to me that poisoned the well right off the bat. I don't care to debate with people who act like insufferable assholes when they ask (or accuse,in his case) something and then get indignant when you tell them to get lost.

I don't get indignant when I'm called an insufferable asshole (as opposed to ditto head) or indignant when someone who pretends to be debating tells the opponent to get lost; but I do firm up my opinions about the speaker and the groupies.

You do realize that you are describing your own literary skills, and emotional limitations much more vividly than my own, don't you?

It may have been titillating and a bit shocking (especially where Jagger is concerned), but I don't particularly care if Bowie and Jagger ever was knocking boots. I must say that that scenario gives a hilarious mental picture...and I'm straight! ;-P

I really can't wait for Sherrod's attorneys to get through with Breitbart.

Breitbart has got to be the most deluded of megalomaniacs if he thinks he can just go around ruining people without consequences.

Just to review the Sherrod case:

He announced he was going to destroy an Obama official. This is a clear statement of intent to do malice.

He knowingly publicized falsely edited tapes that were so hacked up they appeared to say the opposite of what Sherrod actually said. He also defamed her in his public speech.

She lost her job and had a media circus intrude into an otherwise quiet life.

Breitbart bragged about his dirty work.

In other words, by his own actions and own stupid statements, he knowingly and maliciously defamed an innocent woman and will shortly face an open and shut case of slander and libel.
