It’s Palin Email Dump Day

‘Sarah Palin didn’t abide by transparency best-practices’
Politics • Views: 45,922

More than 24,000 emails from Sarah Palin’s time as governor of Alaska are being released today — on paper, for some odd reason. ProPublica is going to make a full searchable archive available online as soon as possible: A Reader’s Guide to the (Still Coming) Sarah Palin Emails.

What should we expect to find in them?

We’re not sure. Among the unknowns are how extensive the redactions will be.

But here are some suggestions on what to look for. You may recall that as governor, Palin was involved in a number of controversies that emerged after she was picked as John McCain’s running mate.

In what became known as “Troopergate,” Palin and her husband were accused of personally pressuring a state employee to fire a state trooper who went through an ugly divorce and child-custody battle with her sister. When he refused, he himself was fired. Palin has denied that she pressured anyone. (Here’s the background.) Look for more on this, or on anything she wrote about the Alaska legislature’s investigation into it.

Palin was also caught in a contradiction on a famed “Bridge to Nowhere” construction project. She campaigned for the governorship in favor it, but as a Vice Presidential nominee touted her role in killing it. “Thanks, but no thanks” was how she characterized her response to Congress in regard to using federally earmarked funds on the bridge.

The project never really died, either—at least not in its entirety. As we reported at the time, Palin’s administration continued to pursue a road to nowhere—originally intended to be connected to the bridge—with the help of as much as $73 million in federal earmarked funds. Look for whether the emails say anything about that.

The emails also overlap briefly with her time as a Republican vice presidential nominee. Chances are slim, but they could be interesting if there’s information about the presidential campaign or observations to be made about emails sent in the run-up to her selection as McCain’s running mate.

I spent the last 7-9 days parsing fundiespeak materials, which equaled several hundred documents. That either makes me uniquely qualified to read Palin's illiterate bullshit, or it means I can't take anymore. I'm not sure which.

I hope those that go through the e-mails have adequate mental health coverage. Thousands and thousands of words just to say that lunch is at 12:30 or that it's too cold to hold an outdoor meeting or such.

OT, but they're still going at it, still wanting to parade the bin Laden death photo. Like we don't need to hand extremists more ammo for their cause.

I wouldn't expect very much out of these

I think it's been established in the past that she used her private email account for most of her time as Gov.....here's how Fl's Gov is handling public records and I suspect a lot of politicians are doing the same

When U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson’s office tried to contact Gov. Rick Scott’s top lieutenant, Mary Anne Carter offered her cell number, her state e-mail address and a warning.

“I rarely check and almost never respond to work e-mail because of the open records law,” Carter wrote from her private e-mail account.

I'm pretty unexcited about the emails. It probably won't turn up anything entertaining or important. She's not going to run for president or any other elected office again anyways. If she does run for president she'll never win. A scandal won't hurt her reality show career or Fox News paychecks.

My guess as to why they released these on paper is two-fold.

First, it will take more time to sift through all the email messages than if it were online.
Second, any modifications made to printed copies of email messages have no easy way to verify authenticity.

I would be VERY interested in seeing the email server logs for Palin's account, and quite honestly, I think that state (and maybe federal, since email records fall under the "commerce clause") authorities should be requesting those records as well.

The state of Alaska is releasing the emails in paper form,

The emails span from the beginning of Palin's term in December 2006 through Sept. 30, 2008, when media outlets originally asked for the materials. Palin remained in office until July 2009, when she abruptly quit with 18 months left in her term, citing her lame-duck status and costly challenges from critics.

So the interesting take away here is that nobody gives a crap what she did after the request for her emails first started, as everyone assumes she was counciled at that time to stick to her far more secure Yahoo account.

A joint venture between Crivella West and MSNBC is also working on making a searchable online archive of the documents as quickly as they can get them scanned today.

It will show up here...
[Link: palinemail.msnbc.msn.com....]

As to why they are being released on paper, the three year battle to have them released at all explains that, sort of...

Palin was governor for 966 days, before ending her term abruptly. As of Friday, msnbc.com's request for public records was pending for 997 days.

At $725.97 for the latest set of documents, that price is a bargain, only 3 cents a page for the photocopying, compared with the state's first cost estimate of $15 million for search and copying costs during the 2008 campaign, when officials were flustered by the burst of attention focused on their governor. At that point Crivella West offered to do the work for the state for free. The state didn't respond to the offer, but msnbc.com teamed up with the company to plan an online archive.

Executives in the office of the current governor, Sean Parnell, Palin's former lieutenant governor, said they could not figure out how to release the electronic records in an electronic form, not after certain records had to be printed so portions could be blacked out or withheld entirely. The emails are being handed out in six boxes of paper, at a cost of $725.97 per set, with free handtruck service to the curb.

They are still withholding thousands of emails claiming executive privilege and some of those being released have been redacted by attorneys hired by the state already, I do not expect any "smoking guns" to be left, personally I think the entire thing will be a yawn fest of massive proportions. :(

More than 24,000 emails from Sarah Palin’s time as governor of Alaska are being released today — on paper, for some odd reason.

It's odd, but standard practice. In some patent litigation I've (unfortunately) been involved in, when we've been subpoenaed, we'd deliver the relevant computer source code, and email, as printed listings. Why make it easy for them, if it's a legally acceptable form?

Things may have changed recently, and there's also been the advent of electronic discovery systems, which pluck relevant documents heuristically.

Hah!
(Obviously) On paper they have to be all scanned or manually read. If they had sent say a series of huge PDF files, anyone could word search and get to the dirt fast.

This slows the whole thing down to a coffeemaker drip by drip process. Who has an industrial scanner that can sort and process a few hundred pounds of paper at a crack?

Do you really think that the candidate posed with his bible that way? Do you not think that cover mocks Romney, and his faith?

And why is his faith a cover story? He has said clearly that he does not represent his church.

If you use a persons religion to represent their views, unless they do actually represent their church (a Priest for example) then you are engaging in religious prejudice.

He has never, as far as I know, made a bill, or law based on his mormon faith.

"Look, ma! My body with Mitt's head on the cover of Newsweek!"

Andrew Rannells, who plays one of the two LDS missionaries who are main characters in the Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon," posted that enthusiastic response to Newsweek's cover, "Mormons Rock! How the Outsider Faith Creates Winners", on his Twitter account. And the cover illustration really is just that, Mitt Romney's head photoshopped over Rannells' on an image from a poster for the play.

78 Buck  Sat, Jun 11, 2011 5:01:28pm

Obama plays basketball. He is from Hawaii. Both of those statements are facts.

Now imagine, in 2007 any large media magazine photoshopping his head on a basketball player doing a slam dunk.

OR imagine his head photoshopped on a surfer dude in a bathing suit holding a surf board and doing the hand motion so many surfer dudes in hawaii do.

Now those are not religious characterures, but the flying high bible holding thing is straight out of central casting. A Broadway musical costume.

Get it?
