Rick Perry’s ‘Prayer Rally’ - Sponsored by Insane, Fanatical Bigots

Separation of church and state? What’s that?
Wingnuts • Views: 45,367

The nearly unbelievable Republican craziness story of the day is creationist Texas Governor Rick Perry’s bizarre upcoming day of fasting and “prayer rally,” intended to evoke God’s intervention to save America. Here’s the website for this blatantly theocratic event: The Response: A call to prayer for a nation in crisis.

What makes this so unbelievably crazy? In addition to Rick Perry’s endorsement, the event is funded and co-sponsored by none other than the American Family Association, one of the most bigoted and deranged religious right organizations in the country, whose main spokesman, Bryan Fischer, is notorious for his insane rants — for example, the rant he issued yesterday, claiming that the Nazi Party was founded by homosexuals in a Munich gay bar! Yes, he really did say this.

Youtube Video

And it gets worse — much worse. Here’s a list of the other participants in this crazed “prayer rally,” a jaw-dropping who’s who of religious fanatics and extremists: Fact Sheet: Gov. Rick Perry’s Extremist Allies.

And note that Rick Perry is said to be considering a run for the Presidential nomination.

What I don't understand is that I believe these folks believe in the literal truth of the Bible, and they've been busily praying for the country to return to its former conservative greatness. Why hasn't it happened? The gospel of John specifically promises that what is asked for in Jesus' name will be given. How do they explain this lapse?

On a positive note, Expelled to auctioned off as part of a bankruptcy proceeding:

Ben Stein’s ‘Expelled’ To Be Auctioned as Premise Media Faces Bankruptcy

Ben Stein’s creationist propaganda film, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is facing auction after the film’s makers, Premise Media Holdings LP, filed for bankruptcy.

Expelled was Stein’s attempt to push ‘intelligent design’ into the mainstream, but it failed on just about every level.

The Anti-Defemation League condemned the film, which attempted to link evolution to the Holocaust. Academics and scientists, as well as film-makers and documentarians, heaped scorn on the movie. And critics panned the movie, Roger Ebert first among them.

The really pernicious thing about Stein’s propaganda film, however, is not that it pushed intelligent design and creationism, but that it attempted to convince Americans that we should teach these things in our public schools.

Americans have voted with their wallets, and now Expelled and Premise Media are feeling the pinch.

Should all such creationists effort come to such an end.

One wonders if AFA/Perry's political prayer rally might also face poorer than expected returns?

I have no issue with the prayer rally. I do have an issue with a prayer rally sponsored by a sitting governor.

There is a big difference between events like a non partisan, ecumenical prayer breakfast and very partisan and political event such as this.

23 HappyWarrior  Fri, Jun 10, 2011 3:14:59pm

The other mistake Fischer makes is naming Hitler as the founder of the Nazi Party. Interestingly, he was sent to infiltrate the new party. I believe Anton Drexler was the real founder of the Nazi Party. It's true that the early Nazi party and the SA especially had gay members but that doesn't justify discrimination against gays. Does the fact that the Nazis had straight Christians justify discrimination against them? Somehow, I think Mr. Fischer would disagree with that but because he's hellbent on blaming only gays for the Nazis, he doesn't realize how assine his argument is. The other thing that is worth noting is that the Nazis persecuted gays in and outside their party. Fischer is a revisionist of the worst kind. He's a fascist.

Yeah, I don't think the SA had any more gay members than average. The reason why they get lumped in with gays is because Rohm, their leader was. You know even if the majority of the early Nazis were gay, Fischer's still a hateful prick. He totally doesn't understand the lessons of the Holocaust and Third Reich at all if he thinks it's okay to scapegoat a group simply because it had members do less than savory things. Kinda like how the Nazis scapegoated Jews after WWI because some Jews were active in Germany's anti war movement even though there were many brave German Jewish soldiers and sailors in WWI.

SCIENCE!

As rain fell into the dry air layer at around 2-3 thousand meters above the surface, it evaporated rapidly. The evaporating rain cooled the air very quickly, and this cool air was now much heavier than the air around it. This heavy, rain cooled air, fell rapidly to the surface, but heated due to compression at the standard adiabatic rate of 10 C per 1000 meters. If it fell 2500 meters, then the temperature of that rain cooled air would have risen 25C!

Perry talks like a fanatic but he is really something worse, a shameless pandering opportunist and shill. Perry's support for creationism, for instance, is certain proof that creationists are willing to contribute more to his political campaigns than are the proponents of real science. If he changes his position on this, you will know as surely as the sun rising that some "evolutionist" has found a huge pot of filthy lucre and decided to kick into the Perry coffers. Perry could probably be persuaded to come out in favor of incest, cannibalism, or human sacrifice if they had a similarly powerful and generous lobby.

What about a third agent? Someone could have compiled all the "evidence" gathered by The Other Mccain and that other right with dude and forwarded it to the police. The police may have said "we will investigate or something along those lines." Then the third agent also forwarding this info to Fox for the scoop. Fox, hoping to get a good shot, allows a reporter to hang out in front of the house all day.

They could have sources inside the police dept but this seems a little odd....

Sources close the student said the girl followed Weiner on Twitter after seeing him speak during a school trip to Washington on April 1. Weiner, after signing on to follow the girl's Twitter feed, direct-messaged the girl on April 13, the sources said, though it is not clear what other communication the two may have had between or after those dates.

They already have inside sources close to the student in question.

To avoid sexting, it's always best to assume everyone you meet on the net is simultaneously a young girl and old man.

Seriously, if Weiner was a careless man-- and he appears to have been a careless man-- he could easily have had an explicit conversation with this 17 year old without realizing her age.

If he is a total scuzzball, he could have had an explicit conversation with her while knowing her age, or knowing she was in high school.

The last part I don't know how to judge. It's possible. It doesn't seem likely. Neither did the entire story at first, though.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. A man can't say, "Well, she looked 25!"

In fact, at least one of the interns Mark Foley was IMing was 16, but the only IMs that they found were from an 18 year old and so they couldn't prosecute Foley.

[Link: www.fdle.state.fl.us...]

On September 30, 2006, former Governor Jeb Bush directed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to begin an inquiry into allegations of inappropriate communications between U.S. Representative Mark Foley and former House Pages. The purpose of the investigation was to determine if any such communications sent from or received in Florida violated state law. On October 1, 2006, then Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, sent a letter to former Governor Bush requesting an investigation of Mr. Foley’s conduct with current and former House pages to determine what extent any of his actions violated Florida law.

This investigation has concluded and the findings were discussed with State Attorney William Eddins of the First Judicial Circuit. Eddins has confirmed there is insufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges.

FDLE conducted as thorough and comprehensive investigation as possible considering Congress and Mr. Foley denied us access to critical data,” FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey said. “Should additional information arise which is pertinent to this case, we will ensure it is appropriately investigated.”

That's a little weird.

IF Weiner was inappropriately communicating with an underage girl, he has crossed over to the Hypocrite Zone.

Protecting Children On the Internet

In early 2007 my office did a study that found that over 85% of registered sex offenders in New York City live less than five blocks from schools, and 670 sex offenders live within just two blocks. Some offenders are even closer, permanently residing less than 500 feet away from unwitting parents, educators and children.

Along with several colleagues in Congress, we introduced & passed the KIDS (Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual Predators) Act of 2007, a bill to require sex offenders to register their e-mail and instant message addresses with the National Sex Offender Registry. The “Kids Act’ implemented one of my six recommendations to keep a closer eye on sex offenders both near school grounds and online. I also proposed stricter GPS tracking of sex offenders, tougher enforcement of registration laws and more public disclosure of sex offender data.

Sadly, the Internet is the predator's venue of choice today. We need to update our strategies and our laws to stop these offenders who are a mere click away from our children.

Politico: Anthony Weiner admits contact with girl, 17

New potential Twitter-related troubles arose for Rep. Anthony Weiner on Friday, after Delaware police reportedly spoke with a 17-year-old high school girl about “direct online communications” she’s had with the disgraced congressman.

Weiner confirmed the communications late in the day, but denied that anything inappropriate took place.

IF Weiner was inappropriately communicating with an underage girl, he has crossed over to the Hypocrite Zone.

Hopefully his internal editor stopped him from sexually flirting with the 17 year old. Otherwise, he's fucking toast. But if he knew she was a kid and she said something like, "I saw you at our school." then chances are he simply entertained her with direct responses about mundane bullshit. But as I said above, if he did cross the line, then fuck him. This is one case where I suspect all communications will be made public without argument just to put the innuendo to rest.

re: #164 wrenchwench

Ironically, so was Foley.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

In the House, Foley was one of the foremost opponents of child pornography. Foley had served as chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. He introduced a bill, coined the "Child Modeling Exploitation Prevention Act of 2002" to outlaw web sites featuring sexually suggestive images of preteen children, saying that “these websites are nothing more than a fix for pedophiles.” As it was written, the bill would have prohibited commercial photography of children and it failed due to the unmanageable burden it would have presented to the legitimate entertainment industry.[14][15] In June 2003 he wrote letters to the governor and attorney general of Florida, asking them to review the legality of a program for teenagers of a Lake Como nudist resort in Land o’ Lakes, Florida.[16]

Foley's legislation to change federal sex offender laws was supported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, America's Most Wanted host John Walsh and a number of victims' rights groups. President Bush signed it into law as part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.

Foley also succeeded in getting a law passed that allows volunteer youth-serving organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Boys and Girls Clubs to have access to FBI fingerprint background checks.

I don't know. After Charles posted the Hannity interview, I went around the net to refresh myself. The similarities in the cases seem to be that the communications were computer chat. IMs for Foley as there was no "texting" at that time. It was never proven that Foley had sexual relations with the pages and I don't believe the pages said that. But the chat was every bit as sexual as Weiner, although with young men.

Btw, Foley was molested by his priest when he was 13 and 14. The priest, after retiring, of course, finally fessed up to it.

As an FYI, today Foley is an out gay man in a committed relationship with a dermatologist from LA.

Regardless of the details, I'll repeat that the whole sordid episode shows a lack of judgement and self control that this country can't afford in its leaders.

Any private company, small or large, would fire anyone found doing the same (not only if on company time). I find it odd that many people seem to think being elected puts this in a different category.

I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but that sort of distinction is kind of lost on me.

It's directly considered harassment if the women worked there with him, especially the he's in a superior position. That's why they have those laws.

I read a really interesting article last night that was prompted by Weinergate. The woman was commenting on the lack of response... make that ZERO response by Weiner's wife. None of this visibly public "stand by your man" stuff, like Spitzer or Clinton.

Anyway this author's take on it was that it was generational. A woman born prior to the 60s had no recourse if a man was harrassing her in the workplace. She basically had to take it to keep her job. Women today, and Huma was born in 1976, became adults inside the feminist movement and had that choice to say, "Hands off" and be protected.

It's the same kind of thing with "stand by your man". It doesn't have to be an obligation the way women of my generation would see it. It's her choice whatever she decides to do with her marriage.

Really on the money, I must tell you.

re: #199 Naso Tang

So, what do you expect, and how does that change all the rest?

Regardless of the details, I'll repeat that the whole sordid episode shows a lack of judgement and self control that this country can't afford in its leaders.

Any private company, small or large, would fire anyone found doing the same (not only if on company time). I find it odd that many people seem to think being elected puts this in a different category.

The difference about this category is that his constituents get to do the firing. They did the hiring. It has to be pretty bad for his co-workers to give him the boot.

I think I saw that 30% of all the air missions have been conducted by Norway and Denmark. Something is rotten in NATO.

Denmark takes a dim view of international evil doers. They are also major contributors in Afghanistan, where their per capita deployment (soldiers deployed/national population) is higher than that of the US and second only to the UK. 40 Danish soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan.

Well, we are getting a bit into semantics here. Either they are his bosses or his co workers. Not both. Although I think his real coworkers, the other Representative, actually can fire him.

I suppose it comes down to the natural tendency of people not wanting to admit they were misled. It's always easier to excuse than fire, or forgive than excommunicate.

I hate to go back to the Foley thing, but kids are empowered these days, too. Not like we were. Guys and gals both. Some of the pages who worked for Foley reported him. That didn't often happen even in the 70s. Kids are taught from when they're very little about "good touch, bad touch" so they learn to say no.
