Police Investigate Rep. Weiner’s Contact with 17-Year Old Girl

Fox News was there when police arrived
US News • Views: 46,129

Things got worse for Anthony Weiner today, as police visited the house of a 17-year old girl with whom he was apparently communicating on Twitter: Anthony Weiner admits contact with girl, 17.

New potential Twitter-related troubles arose for Rep. Anthony Weiner on Friday, after Delaware police reportedly spoke with a 17-year-old high school girl about “direct online communications” she’s had with the disgraced congressman.

Weiner confirmed the communications late in the day, but denied that anything inappropriate took place.

The late-afternoon report by Fox News said New Castle County police officers showed up at the girl’s house at about 4:30 p.m., while a crew from the cable TV network was there.

The police “asked to speak with the girl’s mother about the daughter’s contact with Weiner,” Fox News reported, adding that one of the network’s reporters happened to be there when the cops showed up.

At this point it’s impossible to defend Weiner, but … the Fox News crew was already at the house before the police arrived? Does that seem a little odd to anyone?

UPDATE at 6/10/11 8:23:02 pm

A family member told the New York Times tonight that the messages were “harmless.”

A member of the girl’s family who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect her identity characterized the messages as “harmless.”

Nothing surprises me about this whole thing anymore. I don't think it's really a question at this point about whether or not he should resign, because the party leadership is likely to make that choice for him if the heat gets any hotter.

Nothing is too odd where Fox is concerned.

5 Daniel Ballard  Fri, Jun 10, 2011 6:19:43pm

Nah. What is odd is how we have the identity of a minor revealed in a possible sex case. The Fox reporter beating the cops to talk to her? Not odd, but is is truly distasteful. The police move fast for emergencies and crimes in progress. To take reports? Not so much.

If it's true that Weiner knowingly sent explicit messages to an underage girl, it means we have a criminal pervert in Congress. If it isn't true, otoh, it means Fox News is even more recklessly partisan and irresponsible than we had supposed.

half or more of the people demanding he resign are likely just as dirty....I think he should hang on and see what gives...it's not about politics, it's about principle and he has to start somewhere to turn it around, if that's even possible...he's a sex lush but a reasonable congressman....it's all AmIdol at this point...he has nothing besides his dwindling popularity

The Fox crew just happened to be there before the cops?

C'mon. I was born at night, but not last night.

Despite Weiner's admitted creepiness, that's just too convenient.

11 Achilles Tang  Fri, Jun 10, 2011 6:26:12pm

As has been suggested already, I would guess someone told Fox News who visited the house and suggested calling the police.

However why we don't hear it from Fox first seems a bit odd.

Twittering with a 17 year old when you're not sending sexually explicit photos to a 21 year old girl is dangerous enough.

The true punishment for a liar, even if you dismiss what he actually lied about, is that they aren't trusted even when they tell the truth. Weiner has to regain trust. First to his wife and family and if he stays in politics, to the public. That is if he didn't do anything actually criminal.

Pelosi's likely to have Weiner's over-publicized equipment in a jar on her desk by the time this is over.

16 moderatelyradicalliberal  Fri, Jun 10, 2011 6:31:25pm

I know absolutely nothing about Twitter, so could someone tell me whether or there is a profile that lists a person's age or DOB and that Weiner would have known she was 17? Or is it like Facebook, where what you put on your visible profile is optional? I make no excuses for him, but I'm curious as to whether or not he could have possibly not known how old she was.

He might not have a choice if the party leadership thinks that he's drawing too much heat. He's lost credibility, he's lost the moral high ground, and he's losing the media battle. If it comes out that there's any truth to these new allegations, they'll give him two choices: fall on his sword voluntarily or face expulsion.

No, there's no way to tell how old anyone is on Twitter. But in this case, Weiner apparently met the girl at a speech he gave at her high school.

It doesn't matter. I don't remember if there's an age profile on Twitter (I don't post my age anywhere), but people lie online so that doesn't mean anything.

I agree that it's skeevy, I'm just trying to figure out what legal trouble he might be in. Then again the age of consent in Delaware is 16 and 17 in New York, so while it's gross, icky and predatory even if the tweets were sexual, what would be the legal ramifications that would involve the police? You can screw 'em, but you can't talk dirty to them on the internet? We need to make up our minds about when kids are kids and when they aren't. I say 18 across the board.

Not American here, but I'm sure you have similar laws in US. There are professions (I belong to one) that have legal duty to inform authorities if you receive information of minor/vulnerable person being subjected to abuse, sexual etc.
From the initial news report, I suppose the news people may have been there long enough to hear/see evidence after talking with this girl and her mother, that led them to notify police.

I was more so speaking to how odd our laws are. The thing is even if he had met the girl and knew her age, he could have legally had sex with her in both her state and his. I hope he didn't engage in anything inappropriate with the girl. It's gross and lowdown regardless of what the law says. I'm just saying if it's legal for a 46 year old man to have consensual sex with a 17 year old girl, what possible legal trouble could he be in if he talked dirty to her on the internet? Now if it violates specific rules or laws about Congress members that's different, but wouldn't the Capital police be sent to investigate as opposed to local police? I guess we will just have to wait for more facts. Either way, I'm done with this very silly and foolish man. I never had much invested with him to begin with.

Go home, Anthony. Maybe you can salvage the tiniest, most infinitesimal shred of dignity; you can say you're going to do it out of respect to your wife, whatever. If there's nothing else rattling around in that closet, most people will forget about it over time, just not right now.

Kind of ironic. You almost have to be missing the shame gene just to put up with all the BS involved, especially to get elected.

It sounds awful to say, but Edwards was a good Democrat also. I hope people understand when I say that, he (and Weiner) fought the right fights and stood behind the right policies.

Edwards

Weiner
[Link: www.ontheissues.org...]

I understand what you mean about them being good Democrats. I think the reason that this kind of behavior upsets me is because getting caught up in stupid personal lies, even about shit they may very well be none of my business, makes it impossible for you to point out the lies on the other side that matter. Republicans may be lying, liars who tell lies about their policies and intentions, but you can't call anybody a liar about anything if you have your own truth telling problems. No matter what kind of serious and valid critiques of the GOP Weiner may have will be undercut, buy somebody telling a penis joke.

Every situation, and time is different. As I've said before, in this case it is the crass stupidity that gets to me. Anyone who takes juvenile risks with their career, and family, will do the same with those who elected them. He failed, and it wasn't even hypocritical.

Just my personal take.

It's great that Mark Foley has come to terms with his sexual orientation.

But why isn't there any accountability for the incredible damage he did to gay rights while he was hiding it, and all the while trying to find Congressional pages to fuck?

Mark Foley is the poster boy for Republican anti-gay hypocrisy, and he only came out because he had no choice. If he hadn't been caught, he'd still be wreaking havoc to this day.

It was Hastert at the time; and two or three other congressmen were also helping cover it up (one was on the ethics committee, another was part of the RCCC); there was *TONS* of outcry from elected dems, blogs, left-leaning broadcasters, it was featured in campaign ads...

That was a Dem wave year because of Iraq anyway, but Foley's Follies was directly responsible for maybe 4 seats.

And Foley's name was left on the ballot because they were already printed!

While this is embarrassing, I don't know if it is illegal. Of course, just because conduct is not illegal does not mean that it is okay to do it. I think it was immoral and wrong. He deserves to be shamed and ridiculed. As for criminal punishment, we need to look at the laws in all jurisdictions involved. Probably Delaware; Washington, DC; New York...maybe Virginia or Maryland (depending on whether Weiner has a residence in the DC area in either of those states that he used while making contact with the teen).

I have not looked at this entire thread to see if anyone is an expert on the criminal laws in these jurisdictions. Wikipedia has a good article on this.[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

I used to know the Ohio law better (I was an assistant prosecutor once and I handled these types of crimes); it looks like Ohio law may have changed in the last 11 years. Ohio also had a crime called "contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a child" that could be used in cases where the statutory rape law was not applicable. This crime is only a misdemeanor. It is possible that the states where Weiner was active may have a similar criminal offense to charge him with.

166 Mark Winter  Fri, Jun 10, 2011 7:42:52pm

maybe it couldn't hurt to remember that

1) we only have Breitbart's claim that the "explicit" photo on his mobile phone is genuine
2) that twittering with a 17yo is not illegal and not necessarily inappropriate.

Actually it would be rather pointless for Weiner to readily admit contact with the girl and claiming there was nothing inappropriate. He must know that he'd be proven wrong tomorrow if he lied.

If his interaction with the girl had been inappropriate or even illegal he would have shut up at this point.

I'd say there's an entire complex of subcultures that interact in and around politics Wallstreet: party banker wonks, lobbyists, politicians, and all the human infrastructure that back the former up. If the higher levels of the election board room machinery work anything like the backstage of local politics I'm familiar with it's basically sliding into a bubble of priveledge...you simultaneously get the resources to indulge things prior unconsidered and a social network that insulates and obscures your activities because of the manner their interests are wed to a given politician's insider's status.

Belize

In Belize, the age of consent is 16 for all heterosexuals. Since 2003, male homosexuality has been re-criminalized (regardless of age) [5]

The legislation reads:

Criminal Code [CAP. 101] [5]

* Section 47.2

"Every person who (a) unlawfully and carnally knows any girl who is of or above the age of fourteen years but under the age of sixteen years (...) shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction thereof be imprisoned for a term which shall not be less than five years nor more than ten years."

* Section 53. "Unnatural Crime"

“Every person who has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any person or animal shall be liable to imprisonment for ten years.”

For what it's worth, Foley was also molested by his priest when he was about 12.

[Link: www.heraldtribune.com...]

The larger part, to me, of all this was that Foley was in deep trouble and the GOP knew about it. House Speaker Hassert took a lot of well deserved criticism over not getting Foley out of there and some help a year prior. Foley also had a drinking problem.

[Link: abcnews.go.com...]

The GOP didn't care about him in the least, nor the boys, just about him being outed and in the end, he was anyway. Foley, in that Hannity interview, defended Hassert, if I recall which is hideous.

When members of the group saw the girl’s post, suggesting she was engaging in a private conversation with Mr. Weiner, they alerted the congressman that they were watching him. “@RepWeiner new pal is a high school girl. First porn actresses now little girls. Weird.”

They also copied the girl on some of the messages they sent to him, so she sent Mr. Weiner a private message telling him that she felt she was being harassed. He apologized to herin a private message, and removed her from the list of people he followed on Twitter.

A "group of conservatives" from Twitter were also harassing her. Not the Congressman.

At the time, a group of conservatives was monitoring Mr. Weiner’s Twitter activity, after noticing that he was sending messages to a woman from Tennessee.

That was the beginning of what the sleeper typed upthread. Trifecta of ick.

Um. Yeah. I just told you. Follow the memorandum river backwards.

Or, if that's too hard, just read the NYTimes article. It actually SAYS:

So the girl was in fact being harrassed. By a bunch of right-wing bloggers.

Doesn't matter where the allegations come from, at this point, we have to treat them as at least plausible until proven otherwise. Anything else is to give Weiner the benefit of the doubt, something that he proved he's not worthy of at this point.

And before you start the "but right wing bloggers" bit, consider who initially broke this story.

For the hockey fans, a Texan's report on tonight's game.

I've spent my entire life so far not giving a measurable quantity of fuck about sports in general, but I can actually watch a hockey game now and again. I was also rather inexplicably entranced by women's water polo during the most recent Olympics.

Nevertheless, I don't know jack shit about any of the teams or players; I don't care who wins; and I FOR BOB-DAMN-SURE don't care who gets traded to what team, or who gets what contract, or whatever. A guy at work listens to a popular Dallas sports radio station called "The Ticket", and all they talk about is that kind of crap. It's just TMZ-style celebrity gossip, with jocks as the focus.

Attention men who pay attention to sports: You are exactly the same as the people who pay attention to soap operas. This is what obsessive male sports talk sounds like to my ears:

Jack's surprised when "A-Rod" agrees to have hs photo taken with one of his fans and then announces to the country club dining room guests that he's buying everyone lunch. Jack asks him why he's been acting so strangely since he returned from his kidnaping ordeal. Coach Jane intercedes and insists it's nothing, so Jack suggests he get some professional help. Jane finally claims that Jack's the problem.

Everybody, including Charles, seems to be all hot because the girl is under the age of consent. If morality is to be judged by local statute, let us check it out.
Worldwide Ages of Consent

In Texas, you can get [straight!] married legally at age 14 so long as you have parental consent or a court order.

I can't decide which is more horrifying: parents green-lighting their 14 year-old getting married, or a court order decreeing the same.

Church Cancelled Due to Lack of God

Parishioners of Pastor Theo Leobald’s First Congregational Church of Holy Christ In Heaven will not meet next Sunday morning for a coffee social and morning Bible study as they do every week, gathering in fellowship and offering thanks and praise to God on high. The reason for the cancellation? Simply the fact that, according to Leobald, God does not now, has never, and will never exist.

When asked why he is convinced of God’s nonexistence, Leobald became visibly irritated with reporters.

“What’re you, an illiterate peasant? Aren’t you familiar with 20th century thinking at all? Christ, read a book, or maybe just think about the idea for a minute. Pretty ridiculous, huh?” he said.

Mm. I'm not sure they're really collateral if you mean it in the sense of "incidentally harmed because of proximity." It's more like they become fair game because of their affiliations. People who do this kind of thing get off on it...they really don't need a lot of justification: they're looking for excuses to vent frustrations and be ugly.

There's a gender component to this as well, I think. A component of real-world sexism is that women are often socially marked by their affilations...even glancing, casual ones...with men outside their family unit. And once given a marked status, a woman becomes an "acceptable" target for harassment, prurient speculation, and the male gaze in all it's varieties.

So, we've been having problems with our refrigerator lately. Called our landlord this morning to ask someone to take a look at it. He called back 5 minutes later to say they were supposed to drop a new one at my neighbor's place, but no one was home, so he dropped it off out our place. So we got a brand new fridge.

That sounds nice.

And to psycho wingnut Bryan Fischer, who consistently gets his history of the Nazis wrong, I offer this. The Simon Wiesenthal Center has found the original copy of a letter typed by Hitler himself from 1919 detailing his obsessive hate of the Jews. This letter predates Hitler becoming a Nazi. So its clear that he pushed the Nazis in a even more radical direction than they otherwise might have gone. No gayness involved, just insight into a very sick mind.

The only thing I can think of is that Weiner got sucked into the hedonistic aspect of Twitter and internet photos. Which of course means he was already predisposed of this all. I never really saw him as an example of perfection.

I didn't have any strong feelings about him. Until now. Now I have strong feelings.

Ours are a tad more aggressive. Black bears not usually very so, but if they've got babies, or are feeling threatened they can be feisty. Also, they like trash cans.

They growl, piss on you, and scratch. They do have sharp claws.

However, they are not known for aggression.

upding for super beetle, longtime watercooled VW owner here

It was a real mess. The oil drain plate did not have the drain valve in the middle so I had to take the plate off to get the oil out. I put a new plate in with a drain valve...that will make the next oil change much easier. And that next oil change will probably be in a hundred miles or so...this engine is dirty and I have been very, very bad about caring for it.

This was my dad's car. I bright green (Ravenna Green) VW Super Beetle convertible.

There's Bobby Dooley, the prissy conservative home-owner's association president who goes mmhmm a lot

There's Margaret Grey who's pretty hollywood-liberal, who has the kid who is in the acting biz, and the husband with "gender confusion"

There's Colleen Kristen Brewster, who he never does anymore, who's more of a cheery Amway chick

And there's Mavis Leonard, who's a black teacher, who is usually abusing kids or playing harmonica

Silver 2006. Got it in late 07...we had a VW Passat that I put 5 grand in mechanical work into over two months and decided that maintaining it had become unmanageable. I wanted to get a Civic or Accord (reliable commuters) but my wife saw the Z on a lot and said I should have it (have I said I love this woman?) It's impractical as hell with two full-sized dogs...but one lays in the back and I'm able to take them around when I need to. But it makes for a good commuter car most days and gets decent (26mpg) mileage if I drive it properly...I can knock that down to 16 or so if I go all mid-life crisis on the hills.

Wiener update: Weiner's exchanges between teacher, teen revealed

Hours after the e-mails were unearthed, Delaware cops descended on the home of a 17-year-old high school junior to ask her about online communications she had with Weiner.

"They (cops) were made aware of an alleged contact between Congressman Anthony Weiner and an area teen," said New Castle County police spokeswoman Officer Tracey Duffy.

"The teen has been interviewed and disclosed no information regarding any criminal activity."

She said the probe was continuing.

The girl's mother, whose name is being withheld, told The Post Wednesday that Weiner sent nothing obscene -- and sent only two brief messages to her daughter about seeing him during an April school trip to the Capitol.

The teen, who idolized Weiner, was "disappointed" in him after his confession.

The mom said she pointedly questioned her daughter about whether Weiner sent her anything obscene, and the girl swore it was all G-rated.

"I guess because he knew she was in high school," the mom said, though she added it was weird that Weiner would spend any time communicating directly with her daughter.

The mom did say her daughter wrote in one message, "I'm in love with you," but explained it away with, "She's 17."

Conservative bloggers expose sordid underbelly of Weiner scandal that mainstream media won't touch

Now leading the Weiner web sleuthing is Patterico, who earlier today posted a detailed and convincing, though circumstantial, case that there is a very strong possibility that Weiner sent lewd messages and/or images to minors.

Patterico’s post (the third on the subject) is well worth reading (warning: it includes some sordid stuff).

And now, Fox News is reporting this from New Castle, Delaware (h/t Ace of Spades):

Wiener update: Weiner's exchanges between teacher, teen revealed

So that probably explains why Fox News was already on the scene. It was probably reported to police by Fox and/or wingnut bloggers.

The Times has a story that prints more of the messages. It appears to me that this girl got a crush on him when he talked at her school (also, she was interested in going into politics) so she started "following" him and sending him notes.

This was then picked up (acc. the Times) by a conservative group who were following his tweets because they'd noticed he was corresponding with the porn star. They started harrassing her (the teen-ager). Weiner apologized to her and took her off his contacts list. But a month later he put out a general call for people interested in following him on Twitter and the teen-ager replied and was reconnected.

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

This says to me a few things. First, Weiner obviously knew he was being tracked by conservative groups out for his blood. Instead of being extra-careful, he continued to be, what, obsessed with virtual adoration on social media. But second, the messages he and this girl exchanged were only in any way inappropriate if you have a very, very dirty mind. I mean, I guess talking about Superman could be coded sex talk. But wow. The president of Italy invites hot underage girls to private parties at his home... and stays on. An American congressman responds on Twitter to a 17-year-old fan.... and is hounded out of office?

I read the post at Patterico and it's a very embarrassing (to her) string of tweets from this girl about her crush on Weiner (sent to her friends, not to him) accompanied by a lot of completely unsubstantiated innuendo.

140 mph or kph?

Perfectly normal: German cars are designed to go 100 mph (160 kph), and those stretches of Autobahn (very few remaining these days) with no posted speed limit are designed to carry cars safely at that speed.

American cars might have the muscle to go 100mph or more, but their steering and suspension systems are not capable of maintaing control at those speeds.

a mild dream of mine is one day to rent a Porsche, or at least an M3, and bury the needle on the autobahn

the Germans are serious about passing lanes, if you are in the fast lane and you don't yield for faster traffic, you will get a ticket that will leave you waiting for a cigarette from your lover

My GTI likes 100mph and more, rides at 100 like my old '84 pontiac 6000 wagon rode at 50, a shame I only get to do it in the middle of nowhere

unlike my father's AMX (which he said, would leave the ground at such speeds despite its rip-snortin mill) my car is rather sorted at 110 ^_^

A government program has functioned well, the workers have paid money into a fund, and he wants to just steal it away from them.

Yep. And I think in the US we've largely lost our way in terms of respecting profit for profit's sake, instead of wanting to make profits do to things of actual value, things that contribute to society.

My grandfather was proud of the boats he built, of the machines he made, because they were things of value.

These days, we treat assholes who make their money through spewing racism as though they're somehow smart or clever by doing so, and we treat people who make money through financial instruments which literally do nothing positive for anyone else, as though they're awesome and worthy of respect.

One of the reasons I consider myself a conservative is that I think many of the problems in the US are values problems; I think we need to go back to the idea that making money should be based on making things of actual value.

The only differencv is that this particular (D) never made a reputation for standing for for "family values" legislation.

The most outrageous thing about them is that Palin's legal team decided to leave in all the personal contact information for anyone who criticized Palin -- email addresses, phone numbers, even some street addresses.

But there are so many of them that they get boring, and Democrats don't get all upset and call for resignations when Republicans fuck up...it's just expected of them. But when a Democrat fucks up, there's a whole infrastructure set up to figure out the most ways to make hay of it...and what's really interesting to me in the Weiner case (so far, anyway) is the fact that nobody (to my knowledge - I suspect Wolf Blitzer blurted this out on day 1) has said, "How will this affect President Obama?"

There is no need for anyone to work so hard on this. The good dirt on Palin comes right out of her mouth every time she opens it in public.

Generally speaking I agree. Specifically speaking of current Wiener focused news sources, I suspect partisanship is a big influence, either of the news organization or more likely of the audience that the news organization is trying to cater to.

Ironically, it seems those who most complain about biased news sources utilize biased news sources for their news, the alternate of what they perceive as biased.

The difference, of course, is that Pelosi can fuck you up(if you're a Democrat) whereas Jesus really can't do shit.

Man, Portland is truly a fruitless town to sell pot in, market is so glutted with homegrowers you have no idea

We used to have hydroponics warehouses buying ad time on radio stations here :D

My wife used to live in the Seattle area. She said that there was a very high tax on cars in Washington state. Also, new cars had to meet tough emission requirements; cars that predated the standards were exempted. The effect was that people would put off buying new cars and keep driving old junkers. I faced the same sort of thing 10 years ago when I lived and worked in the DC area. Virginia had a car tax. I drove my old Toyota and kept my newer, more expensive car, at my mom's house in a different state.

Thank you. I thought she was a ban-worthy candidate but didn't want to tell you how to run your blog...her race-baiting and trollish crap really was over the top a lot of the time - I pretty much ignored her because to engage would have meant letting loose with my "less gentle" online persona - and I'm trying to kill that fucker for the most part.

re: #580 elizajane

An American congressman responds on Twitter to a 17-year-old fan... and is hounded out of office?

I read the post at Patterico and it's a very embarrassing (to her) string of tweets from this girl about her crush on Weiner (sent to her friends, not to him) accompanied by a lot of completely unsubstantiated innuendo.

It sounds as though he was, in this instance, correct.

It also sounds as though my decision not to let any of my children have any social media until they are fifty-five was also correct.

re: #587 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

My brother was cruising on the Autobahn in Germany (well, I guess not in Indiana) at about 140mph and a Mercedes station-wagon blew by him. Two kids in the back.

He was, shall I say... shocked.

Some friends of my parents' in Germany had an ongoing problem with their elderly mother, who persisted in driving on the Autobahn at night.

Just going to visit friends.

Apparently, after the war, people applied for new driver's licenses, to get rid of the ones with the Nazi government's stamps and insignia.

Ursula never felt the need to replace hers, since hers was issued by the Weimar Republic.

Apparently once you have demonstrated your ability to drive in Germany they never test you again. Which is how we got from Ursula proudly taking her driving test in 1920, to Ursula driving like a bat out of hell on the Autobahn in the '90s.

Her children wrung their hands. She retorted that half of them lived in America anyway, where there would be weird foreign traffic rules to learn, and they were OK, right?

Odi isn't much more than 'right shoulder', but they do seem to gather virtue about them. I'd rather live next door to a streetwalker than a televangelist, and think of that as an echo of my strong Christian upbringing.

She'd be more likely to actually be a Christian, too.

Did not seem able to engage if no one took that bait.
