Politics • Views: 37,978

The previous thread for the GOP debate is filling up fast, so here’s a new one.

So far, these candidates have advocated destroying the EPA, NASA, the Federal Reserve, the FDA, Medicare and Medicaid, and Social Security.

Ron Paul hates the government so much that's why he's been sucking on the government teet all of his life. Straight from the USAF and into politics. Not counting the government being involved in his education.

Too. Funny.

Actually, you don't know what you're getting. Ron Paul is only a "libertarian" when it's convenient. When it's not, he'll be the first to use public funds to pay for his pet cause, or find an excuse to discriminate against same sex relationships.

I like Jerry Brown (and voted for him) even though he's to the left of where I am on many things. He's an example of "you know what you're getting." He's principled and consistent. Ron Paul is not.

Interesting notion, if by well you mean he shamelessly lied his ass off and disavowed his entire public career.

I share Charles' opionions about Ron Paul.

He balanced California's budget before. How's he doing now?

What we saw tonight wasn't "democracy".

Instead, what we got is what the 20th century business of advertising was all about - telling people that they could have and deserve to have whatever their egos tell them that they deserve.

Democracy is a popularity contest, and tonight wasn't much different than DWTS or American Idol.

But governance is serious business and only the serious should be allowed to play on the court.

Holy shit!

At Frum Forum:

Here is a story that deserves more press. This is certainly more important that a faux GOP debate:

Ridge Alleges Bush Political Pressure for Terrorism Alert

Tom Ridge appears to be alleging in a new book that the Bush administration put political pressure on him to raise the terrorism threat level in fall of 2004 so as to help George W. Bush’s chances of reelection.

It seemed pretty obvious to me as a close observer that games were being played with such terrorism announcements during the presidential campaign. Pakistani sources spoke of being encouraged to release terrorism-related stories during the Democratic Party convention in summer, 2004, so as to upstage John Kerry. They did so, leading to a fiasco when a Pakistani double agent, Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan, was outed, derailing an ongoing sting against militants in the UK.

Ridge may have felt bad about that SNAFU, and so resisted similar pressures in October. The book is not out yet, so precise details are not yet available.

Frances Townsend, Donald Rumsfeld and other Bush administration figures are denying the charge. But, of course, they are seasoned liars and so their denials don’t count for much.

Hi, all. I was on Twitter and Frumforum during the debate. Sorry I wasn't around. Tough to watch at times but Romney did well and no one landed any major blows that I saw.

A room full of Keystone Kops.

I love Summer Glau, but going from Firefly to Sarah Connor to The Cape is not upward progression.

Well Firefly to Sarah Connor was more of a lateral move. The Cape was a dive into an empty pool.

Besides the prospective GOP voters in NH, and the CNN viewers, I'd say Cain was the big loser of the night. He just came off as less relevant than say Gingrich (who always knows how to butt into the middle of something), or Romney (with his winced stare), or even Paul (with his theatrics.)

Experience in public policy forums matters, and Cain is the amateur on that base.

The final conclusion:

If you tuned into this debate in order to look for some way to differentiate between the candidates, then you're SOL.

If you tuned in to get the candidates views on the major issues this country faces, then you're better off turning to the Daily Show.

If you turned in to see the candidates asked hard, nerve-racking questions, then you must be new to politics.

If you turned in to find out which candidate is the most electable, then you must have hit the wrong channel for American Idol.

But if you tuned in to watch the current GOP field serve up several flavors of Obama hatred, then you've hit the motherload.

Obama tells donors that big changes take time

That's asking for a lot.

And De Beers for... well, you know.

So I know the official spokesperson for platinum. And I know the official guy who speaks for the World Gold Council. We meet at a big convention for drinks. After a few cocktails they are bantering back and forth taking hilarious creative license with the official slogans. I'm standing there laughing and the Pt guy looks at me and says 'So what do you have to add to this?"(Knowing I work/sell/tech for a precious metals refinery)
I hang my head in mock shame. "I'm bi-metallic. There I admitted it". "But hey I'll go with Give Gold Get Some."

Are you ready to admit that Walker and the Republicans broke the law in getting their anti union bill passed?:

So when Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi struck down Scott Walker’s ‘Budget Repair Bill’ which would limit the collective bargaining rights of all Wisconsin unions, I was furious. Convinced that an activist judge was attempting to create, or in this case, thwart law, I decided to actually read the official judgement and court finding papers. Well! What a surprise! I am a fair person. So I can’t ignore the following conclusions:

1) It is absolutely clear that Scott Walker and the Republican legislature broke the law when signing the “Budget Repair Bill”. They used sneaky tactics, such as using a tiny room that couldn’t accommodate the public. They purposely had too few security officers there to man both doors of the buildings, thus forcing the closure of one. They enforced screening at the one door and an additional one at the top of the stairs. They didn’t post even a two hour notice to the public, let alone the 24 hour notice normally required. They lied & said there was no more seating for the public, though there were open seats. They ‘closed’ the building at 6pm and forced the public out of the building and then held their meetings after 6. Basically, they broke their own rules!

Whatever happened to honor? This is not ok under any circumstance and embarrasses me, a conservative, to no end. What if a liberal legislature was allowed to do this to us? (oh yeah, they already did- when Congress passed Obama care unconstitutionally)! Walker should have had the courage to conduct his business, shouting over the mouth frothers if necessary, in public, in honor, and in a way that could make his supporters proud. All violent protesters could have been booted. Instead, he sneaked around getting signatures in dark hallways, lied and schemed in a way not worthy of any governor.

It did what it was intended to do.

Indeed, the whole affair was dressing up a pig with lipstick, to borrow a phrase from the last election.

Where the "base" is at: OBAMA IS AMERICA-HATING MUZLIM COMMUNIST ATHEIST ONE-WORLDER!!

However, in "decent" circles that is unacceptable to say in public, so the candidates had to try and make that pig look respectable.

So tonight the candidates focused on Obama (not each other or even the issues), and we heard that that the President doesn't really have America's interests at heart, that Muslims are here to kill us, that real Americans believe in God and mention that at every possible instance, and that the US should always be the dominant leader in every effort in which we engage even in the smallest amount.

The inevitable outcomes of a completely open and free market are monopolies.

Exactly. I suppose that's why some people do all that shrieking about free markets. Now, why some dupes also go around imitating them, I've never been clear on.

To you Tweeters out there

Do you block advertisers from following you?

They should have a button next to their handle on your 'followers' list.

"Now watch this drive."

Doesn't count as an adequate Magical Balance Fairy. Obama has already played twice as many rounds of golf into his first term as Bush had in all eight of his years in office.

And did you hear how many times he used the word "I" in his last speech?

Charles, maybe we should have a poll who won the debate:

- Bachmann
- Cain
- Gingrich
- Paul
- Pawlenty
- Romney
- Santorum
- Obama :-) [That was the most popular option on Facebook]

I don't have any following me, but I wouldn't block them. So far I've only blocked accounts from the Stalker Blog.

(Steve, I am only mentioning them in the context of blocking them on Twitter. Nothing more.)

That's because George W. Bush largely stopped play golf by 2003. He did that because he feared pictures of him playing golf while American troops were fighting would be used to make him seem "out-of-touch" and "elitist". Obama has less to worry about when it comes to that, because too many of the people making such a charge are crazed haters. Thus any charge to that effect made by a sane person is rendered tainted by the loons.

It just doesn't rise to the level of outrage for me. It's not as if a person's brain completely turns off every time they leave the office for a break.

And sometimes, a change of scenery, a bit of a walk, and some fresh air can give you new insight and perspective into the issues of the office.

On Thursday evening, the Treasury Department issued a statement that the government had reached final terms with Italian auto-giant Fiat on selling the government’s remaining 6 percent share of Chrysler, plus shares held in trust for its retirement program. Mr. Obama will announce the $560 million deal Friday during his Ohio visit.

Although taxpayers still stand to lose nearly 20 percent of the auto bailout funds, it’s less than the 60 percent loss the Treasury Department initially forecas

Also, it might be interesting to compare the gross tax revenue lost and unemployment benefit pay outs had they been allowed to go under. The ripple effects on the economy and deficit would have been devastating.

Oh, absolutely. By all means, presidents should get out of their office and take breaks. The last thing we want is for them to become absorbed by their office and go stir crazy.

Yes, you know what you're getting with Ron Paul, but no, you don't have to like it.

He's a racist, misogynistic bigot who advocates insane monetary policies that were discredited in the last century.

There's nothing to like about Ron Paul.

I like it that he loses by truly comical margins whenever he runs for a presidential nomination.
