Pakistan Arrests Informers Who Helped Find Bin Laden

The lines are being drawn
World • Views: 27,451

Tonight we learn that Pakistan’s military is arresting informants who cooperated with the CIA to help find Osama bin Laden.

At a closed briefing last week, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee asked Michael J. Morell, the deputy C.I.A. director, to rate Pakistan’s cooperation with the United States on counterterrorism operations, on a scale of 1 to 10.

“Three,” Mr. Morell replied, according to officials familiar with the exchange. …

Some in Washington see the arrests as illustrative of the disconnect between Pakistani and American priorities at a time when they are supposed to be allies in the fight against Al Qaeda — instead of hunting down the support network that allowed Bin Laden to live comfortably for years, the Pakistani authorities are arresting those who assisted in the raid that killed the world’s most wanted man.

Shall we still assume only rogue elements of the ISI supported Bin Laden? This appears to put the lie to that assertion. Pakistan is at least half dirty on this.

And there’s little to be done about it. We need to seriously think about what we’re going to do if Pakistan collapses, including both what it means for our presence in Afghanistan and the matter of Pakistan’s nukes. Given that we cannot allow those nukes loose, I do hope plans are being made to secure or destroy them.

This is not a surprise to many in Washington.

For a very long time it has appeared as if Pakistan is marginally “run” by whomever is in office, and more by various factions, some in and some out of government.

We must remember that “Pakistan” is a bit of an artificial construction (thanks to the British Empire), not unlike many of the current nation states in that part of the world. The locals are not so intent on necessary following the formulae laid out by the previous empire to rule over them.

When I was a kid in school, in social science hour when we studied things like geography and other people, “Pakistan” had both an East and West component.

Even as a kid it seemed weird to me that a country would be in two parts so far away, separated by an even bigger country.

At that time I was unaware of religious differences, didn’t really know what a “Muslim” was (I didn’t meet a Muslim until I went to college - my own town had none that I can remember).

Then the eastern part was turned in Bangladesh, and the western part into contemporary Pakistan. Just like magic (at least if one only looked at maps.)

Example. Captain Short Bus (I presume that is his name) was airdropping leaflets of the Misrata Front in Libya. Except not over Qaddafi’s forces, but over the Rebels. The leaflets told the forces to surrender and run away. The rebels retreated, losing several kilometers of ground.

Oy! That’s a nasty mistake.

The Chinese government has wronged them horribly, but that could not justify them using a nuke. Such an action would primarily kill people not responsible for the government’s actions.

That’s a valid point but … when has that ever stopped human beings?

The other thing is that I could see the current Chinese government taking a Pakistani nuke and false flagging with it. When you look at the really long term history of China, it’s not especially far-fetched.

I’d guess we could only find some, far from all in a short period.

I’m going to guess India could find more that we could…we should be a lot better friends with Mumbai, IMHO.

I’m not sure what China knows, but the guys in Bejing can’t be super thrilled by the instability in Pakistan. The fact that this mess is on China’s border actually increases my desire to see us get the hell out of there. The Chinese don’t tolerate instability very well, and they have more hope of changing things in Pakistan than we do. If they want to, and our presence keeps them from having to act.

Well what the future certainly holds is more and more countries being able to make nuclear warheads, orbit a satellite, and piss off a strategic opponent really bad. Since NK got away essentially scott free for testing, it’s been nearly game over for non proliferation. If they had suddenly lost some launch facilities or had a nuke factory bombed there would be teeth in the rules. Now all we got is ill enforced sanctions and those wonderful strongly worded UN letters.

What’s stranger than a man posing as a Syrian lesbian blogger? Two men posing as lesbian bloggers and being unmasked when the “Syrian” staged his/her own abduction.

The emergence of a second male imposter posing as a lesbian is the latest twist in the strange case of the “Gay Girl In Damascus,” a supposed Syrian lesbian blogger named Amina Arraf, who was the subject of headlines around the world last week after she was believed to have been abducted by two masked men.

There is not a damn thing we can do about the double dealing either.

Cut off their funding/aid too quickly and collapse the Government, the nukes end up with whom?
Full scale attack, they have nukes, it could easily escalate.
China is still a large benefactor and backs them up as a border buffer.

All three of the above points also applied to North Korea in case you have forgotten. BTW when was the last time you heard about them and their nuclear program in the news?

Pakistan is not a member of the M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) club yet but it is defiantly already a member of the M.A.P.U.D. club (mutally assured politically unacceptable destruction).

Stepping into that would be like plunging headfirst into Korea again, only this time with nukes involved.

Good link:

First, why is it that Republicans always feel that the private sector can do the government’s job “better”? Exactly what do they mean by that? Notice that John King just lets that slide without asking for any explanation. This is just another example of how the mainstream media that covers politics practices precious little journalism in favor of just letting politicians say whatever the hell they want unchallenged. The only thing that makes any sense to me is that when a Republican claims that the private sector can do something “better” than the federal government, they mean “more profitably.” Of course, the government is not supposed to be doing things “profitably,” they are supposed to do things as thoroughly as possible. They are supposed to serve as many people as possible, not serve some of the people and still have money leftover. if you do that, then you haven’t done your job of serving the People. Government exists to serve the People, not the Private Sector.

To be fair, that belief isn’t too uncommon, and I once held it myself. I no longer do, though. Hitler doesn’t fit into a ‘left-wing’ template, though he doesn’t fit the Goldwater-Reagan American conservative mold either. The 2010 Senate race in Illinois was a contest of blunders, with Alexi Giannoulias’s blunders proving the greater ones.

Though unlike some other races, the candidates themselves ran without hate and they even met at the Billy Goat (a famous Chicago tavern mini-chain) to share a beer after the election was over. They met at the Lower Michigan location, which I also patronize from time-to-time. The place is named after the original owners pet goat, which was the very same goat involved in the famous “Curse of the Goat” laid on the Chicago Cubs.

Just felt like giving out some local history.

Revisionist, yes but not necessarily a douchbag. Tim Newark, who made the argument in the British magazine Military Illustrated, isn’t a douchebag. But what he is is a socialism opposing, Thatcher-mold Conservative. I though his article was overly political when I read it, though the anti-socialism didn’t bother me, if only because he and I have the same general views about socialism. Still, looking at it again with fresh eyes, I now see the mistakes he made.

The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) was installed on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in May 2009. COS is designed to perform high-sensitivity, medium- and low-resolution spectroscopy of astronomical objects in the 1150-3200 Å wavelength range. COS significantly enhances the spectroscopic capabilities of HST at ultraviolet wavelengths, providing observers with unparalleled opportunities for observing faint sources of ultraviolet light.

The primary science objectives of the mission are the study of the origins of large scale structure in the Universe, the formation and evolution of galaxies, the origin of stellar and planetary systems, and the cold interstellar medium.

What a nasty little man.

Anyone who claims to know they are of “the elect” is not Christian and, hence, is not of the elect.

No, there are no “" here.

But that’s what you get when you start delving into the truly weird world of non-christian and downright anti-biblical theology that is so popular in the evangelical “Christian” world.

It’s the nature of the beast. TV networks need to sell commercial airtime. So CNN tries to drum up drama to get people to watch their programming. Nothing new there.

To be fair, that belief isn’t too uncommon, and I once held it myself. I no longer do, though. Hitler doesn’t fit into a ‘left-wing’ template, though he doesn’t fit the Goldwater-Reagan American conservative mold either. But his appeal was more to the fears and beliefs common on the Right, so Far Right is the correct place for him.

One last thing on the “debate” Monday night:

No matter how many of us lament the empty-headed-ness of the whole thing, it looks like it did what it was supposed to do: let CNN beat FNC during the two hours it was on:

Cable News Ratings for Monday, June 13, 2011

So, for CNN to beat Fox all they have to do is have all the far right talking heads that are normally on Fox come on over to CNN, sit them in the same room, and have some pretty boy stand up and be run over by the mindlessness of it all.

One thing to note is that the total viewers during the two hours, between FNC and CNN, didn’t change much at the hour break. However, after the hour break CNN pulled way ahead of Fox as CNN picked up what looks like the O’Reilly viewers who tuned out Hannity. During the first hour the debate barely pulled in more of the older crowd than did O’Reilly.

Anyway, the whole thing was clearly about helping CNN ratings and most definitely not about helping the GOP voters of NH pick a candidate.

Compare the numbers to the previous Monday:
tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com
and you’ll see what I mean.

War. What else? With sense and forbearance on our part, there would be no retaliatory nuclear attacks on any Pakistani city. But we would raise a larger army, invade, overthrow the regime, destroy all its nuclear infrastructure, and kill off the top leadership who were behind the attack.

Everything is going good for me. My wife is doing well in med school, I’m settling into New York, my consulting business is doing very well.

But so many of my friends have died this year, and now my best friend got into a domestic with his ex-girlfriend, they’re both pressing charges, and he’s been diagnosed as suicidal. Hopefully he’ll finally manage to get his shit together— he’s always been my broke-ass friend— but suicidal tendencies scare me. It makes it hard for me to help him out; I just want to say “Don’t kill yourself, man, you’re awesome even when you suck,” every time I talk to him.

I had 2 friends (knew both over 30 years) die within 30 days of each other about a year and a half ago. Also had a friend kill himself 4 or 5 years ago and another friend’s brother killed himself 2+ years ago.

-Went to my best friend’s funeral.
-The other friend that died had a private service because of his immediate family. (Bible thumpers who hated his friends)
-Didn’t go to either funeral of the ones who offed themselves. It’s one of my rules.
Now, is your friend really suicidal or did he just say stoopid shit to amp up the tensions?

Entirely unwilling to focus their god (or athie)-given abilities for their personal success.

I know five people off the top of my head who fit that category. None of them are “stoners” either.

Heh. Yeah. My friend abstains from everything (other than smoking cigarettes). I, er, well, I’m Californian. And yet I’ve always had a job.

He also sucks at managing his money. Back when he actually had a consistent job for awhile, and was making more money than I did at the time, he still had to borrow money from me regularly.

And yeah, life has been unfair to him and he concentrates on that instead of, well, fixing it. I’m really hoping this is the necessary rock bottom for him to change.

The stinger at the end is that this is after he convinced me to buy a cross-country bus ticket for him so that he could move back to Portland, and of course this domestic dispute means he can’t leave, the ticket is non-refundable.

re: #219 Cannadian Club Akbar

I had 2 friends (knew both over 30 years) die within 30 days of each other about a year and a half ago. Also had a friend kill himself 4 or 5 years ago and another friend’s brother killed himself 2+ years ago.

-Went to my best friend’s funeral.
-The other friend that died had a private service because of his immediate family. (Bible thumpers who hated his friends)
-Didn’t go to either funeral of the ones who offed themselves. It’s one of my rules.
Now, is your friend really suicidal or did he just say stoopid shit to amp up the tensions?

In the last 6 years I’ve had 3 friends kill themselves. 2 were military buddies that were very unstable before they joined (one had the nickname “crazy 8” in the marines) and the other was my best friend from HS that had been “trying” to kill himself for 20 years. I went to the funerals of 2 of the 3, one was in FLA and I couldn’t get away to go. Don’t not go because you think suicide is the weak way out. It is but some people aren’t strong enough to push on. Sometimes it’s a medical reason and sometimes it’s just weakness but either way they can’t help it.

Someone who commits suicide should have “See? I told you I was depressed!” etched on their tombstones.

Someone in their right minds simply can not off themselves. It is so against the human preservation nature.

I’ve been to three suicide funerals. Can’t say I recommend them. Never seen such emotional destruction.

Or both.

Toss in a military color guard and it gets worse. Luckily only one of the 3 of my buddies had kids. Dealing with parents you haven’t seen in years at the funeral of one of their kids blows.

2. If he saw someone else trying it after he did it, he didn’t try to hard to stop them. (been there, done that was probably his thinking)

In one instance, a special prosecutor said Whitley swore on a probable cause affidavit that he had field-tested drugs confiscated during busts.

But when Indiana State Police tried to confirm the results, samples of heroin and methamphetamine turned out to be fake.

Charges were dismissed against 16 suspected drug offenders as a result of the botched investigation.

Bountiful City settles taser lawsuit
abc4.com

ABC 4 News first brought you the story of Bruce Harper who was tasered an estimated six to ten times in the spring of 2009. Harper was pulled over in May of that year for reportedly having a crooked license plate.Things quickly escalated and Harper was repeatedly tasered. More than sixty times, Harper was told by police to turn around.
…..
Bountiful City now confirms to ABC 4 that is has settled the matter, but neither Bountiful nor Harper’s lawyer will say for how much.

The most disturbing part of the video comes after Harper is on the ground and the taser is pressed directly against him. Harper’s painful screams can clearly be heard on the dash camera video. Now, two years later, Harper still has a police-phobia.

Gee, ya think?

Pakistan: Officer Who Helped CIA Wasn’t Detained

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said the report of the major’s detention was “false and totally baseless.” Neither the army nor Pakistan’s spy agency would confirm or deny the overall report about the detentions.
….
The Pakistani army claims that some of the people detained have been “cleared and released” while others remain in custody, McCarthy said. The army has sidestepped the question of whether a crime was committed, saying only that the individuals were detained as part of an “ongoing investigation” into the raid, she said.

N.H. couple have beef with police for Tasering cow

“It was almost like [the police] wanted to punish the cow for ruining their afternoon,’’ said Doug Hirsch. The shots were unnecessary, said Hirsch, as the cow was already headed back to her pen when the guns were fired.

“Because our cow was subjected to repeated and prolonged shock, I seriously question the competence of the Pelham Police Department and their indiscriminate and brutal use of their weapons,’’ Bordeleau wrote in a letter to the Pelham Police Department, which she also sent to the Pelham-Windham News. “It is morally reprehensible that these officers would abuse an animal this way that is not causing any immediate harm to anyone.’’

The Tasers were fired three times, Sergeant Michael Pickles said. The first two shots were ineffective, but the last shot sent a jolt of electricity into her body. The heifer, who Hirsch said weighs about 500 pounds, barely flinched, however, and kept walking, eventually making its way into a temporary pen, where residents were able to lasso her.

Police maintain that the heifer — now known as Houdini because of her dramatic escape — was galloping from one field to another, plowing through fences and crossing the street multiple times. Officers set up a barricade to prevent vehicles from entering the area. The cow nearly injured herself and nearby motorists, said Pickles, and the officers decided that the Taser was the best way to get the animal under control quickly.

I’m starting to get real annoyed at cops who seem to think that tasers are magic wands.

On my way home from the airport on Monday, the guy driving me was a Mr. Kahn. He was clearly from the Muslim or arab world because of a trinket hanging from his mirror in the car. He said he was from Pakistan and had been here since 1980 or 81. He was around 60 and he was very well informed. This guy was classic … He bitched and moaned about everything … Especially the fee structure the TLC has in place for guys like him. Finally I told him I’d give him more than the fee and he said “nah … It isn’t your fault.”. He was a character and I asked him about Pakistan today and he said that in his old area (Swat) it was always peaceful until the religious people started having influence. He ripped into the Pakistan of today because of the corruption. But he said in his mosque here in New England, the imam says murder is always wrong. The lesson learned? Most people are inherently good and just want to be treated fairly. Hatred, on the other hand is a learned emotion.

GOP Cuts To Food Aid For Seniors And Food Banks Equals One Day Of Bush Tax Cuts For Millionaires

The CSFP provides food assistance to 600,000 low-income families every month, 96 percent of whom are seniors, while the TEFAP “provides our nation’s emergency food bank network with food commodities and storage and distribution support.” We previously noted that the cuts to WIC are roughly equivalent to the cost of extending the Bush tax cuts for millionaires alone for just one week.

As it turns out, the cuts to CSIP and TEFAB, according to Half in Ten’s Melissa Boteach, are equivalent to the cost of extending the Bush tax cuts for millionaires alone for just one day:

To which I answer: Some Republicans are that bigoted. I’m not, though, neither is my family nor is my senator (Mark Kirk) nor Mitt Romney. Be careful with generalizations, please.

Way back before you had to be registered to play, I visited this site a lot. I frequently dealt with the claims that “liberals would” or “liberals do” with phrases much the same way. It is a major reason why I quit coming to LGF - couldn’t stand the behavior that today gets a person banned.

Here’s the thing, though. While I don’t recall (and don’t care about) the names of those who harangued me, I distinctly recall the name of the person who supported my position once in a while. It wasn’t you.re: #245 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

I am going to disagree about the highlighted portion. If you are facing an incurable disease with 100% fatality rates, of which the last stage leaves you in constant pain and near immobility, suicide becomes a choice worth considering.

Consider as well the “no extraordinary measures” statements in living wills. They are, essentially, pre-designated assisted suicide statements.

No, I cannot agree with the belief that nobody in their right mind would off themselves, or (implied) request others help them do so.

I actually find a lot of value in going in to work early. I can come home, spend the afternoon out in the garden or otherwise occupied, go out for a nice dinner+movie with the Mrs. Fish, and then sleep at a halfway decent hour. Not to mention avoiding rush hour both ways.

Certainly puts things into perspective. Here we are, shaking and shivering that Lil Kim may develop ICBMs or Dinnerjacket will finally complete his Quest for Atomic Fire, while Pakistan is slowly succumbing to a terminal case of Jihadism, putting its arsenal of 100+ nukes into play.

Their scientists have already been selling knowledge and how to plans for nukes for quite a few years before we even knew about it (if I remember correctly it came up in 2005-06 or so that they were selling nuke know how on some market). As I have said before about Pakistan, I don’t trust them as far as I can throw the country (hence, not at all).

Iran’s about to get nukes. North Korea would like everyone to think it is a nuclear power.

North Korea has demonstrated, with tests, that it is in fact a nuclear power. This isn’t really a question of who thinks what. When enough facts are available, rational discourse converges on “the answer” and there is no further room for rational debate.

One answer is correct, and the other answer is wrong.

Of course, it may sometimes be necessary to bring an initially ignorant but interested party up to speed on the matter, and even though the answer is known, it’s not fair to bully the newbie.

For the record, the computer game development company that puts out the Tom Clancy games isn’t his anymore. Red Storm was bought out by Ubisoft back in 2000, meaning that they in fact own the franchise outright.

or at least, clever minds think alike

Glenn Beck is a storyteller, the problem with him is it’s not a game or a novel, problem (or solution) is he pretends the storytelling is news, and the great unwashed pig-people known as Loyal Fox News Viewers look up from their TV dinners and swallow every word

I knew a guy from high school that was a sweet and likeable guy. He had girlfriends and as far as I knew never mistreated any of them. After he got married things changed, he got arrested for a string of domestics that disturbed me, I didn’t doubt that they were fighting with each other ‘cause I saw the bruises he had. I just could not see this meek guy hitting anyone, much less a woman. After the third domestic charge, I was asked by the police to go collect some of his stuff from his wife. When I left him to do this he was having his jaw wired shut due to an “exchange of blows”. When I got to his place his wife answered the door. There was not a mark on her face, but both hands were splinted.

Apparently he had been beating up her fists with his face all along. I made sure that the police arrested the right person after that.

Actually it looks like the suit is going to be over “The War Powers Resolution of 1973 (50 U.S.C. 1541-1548) “.

It just might be a good idea to get this cleared up. Richard Nixon didn’t like it (he vetoed it) either.

Maybe it is time to get a decision about the Constitutionality?

I think it might be a good idea to get it straight.

Lefty loon Kucinich to become the new Wingnut hero…
Kucinich To Sue Obama For Violating War Powers Act In Libya

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) announced Wednesday that they are suing Obama in federal court over the constitutionality of leading the U.S. into war with Libya without seeking Congressional approval. Specifically, their lawsuit challenges the executive branch’s circumvention of Congress and its use of international organizations — namely, the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization — to authorize the use of military force abroad.

“With regard to the war in Libya, we believe that the law was violated,” Kucinich said in a statement. “We have asked the courts to move to protect the American people from the results of these illegal policies.”

You can put it that way, but it would be inaccurate. If Obama went in front of Congress and didn’t get the “authorization of the use of military force” then you would be right. However in this case Obama doesn’t feel he needs to do that. So we don’t know what congress feels about “siding with Q’Daffy”.

Should Obama comply with the “War Powers Resolution”? Does he have to? I would think that both Dems and Republicans would want to know the final answer.

Sigh, The Register…

There’s this really weird IT/libertarian subculture which that website taps into. They’re too clever to come right out and advocate for doing nothing about global warming, but they absolutely play into that mindset. I note that another of their headlines is currently bitching about how using renewable sources is going to push the price of electricity up.

Plus they have this really sad propensity for colloquialism in their articles, presumably because they think it makes them sound like “the bloke in the pub”, when in fact it just makes them sound like twats (to use another charming British colloquialism - see what I did there?).
