Poll: Percentage of Conservatives Who Support Global Engagement Drops by 19 Points

Right wing isolationism on the rise
Poll • Views: 28,219

Pew Research has a new survey out today that shows a precipitous drop in the number of Republicans who support “global engagement:” In Shift from Bush Era, More Conservatives Say ‘Come Home, America’.

In the Pew Research Center’s political typology survey, released May 4, majorities in every partisan group — including 55% of conservative Republicans — said the U.S. “should pay less attention to problems overseas and concentrate on problems here at home.”

In December 2004, conservative Republicans had been the only group in which a majority had expressed the opposing view — 58% said “it is best for the future of our country to be active in world affairs.”

The proportion of conservative Republicans supporting U.S. activism in world affairs has fallen by 19 points to 39%. Since 2004, liberal Democrats and independents also have become less supportive of U.S. global engagement, but the change has been most dramatic among conservatives.

I wonder what could possibly be the difference now, compared to 2004?

Cough … black Democratic President … cough

Yeah, ‘cause Vietnam was a freebie.

The true costs of our current wars are non-estimable, especially in the damage they’ve done the military and the cost to and because of wounded veterans.

Vietnam was the Democrats war, though. Before this modern day of Republicans and Democrats, the Democrats were the war party. Vietnam is what changed that. A lot of GOP and Tea Party types seem to not remember that.

The modern conservative movement frankly is intellectually bankrupt. Never been too high on conservatism as a whole but the current batch just crack me up when they whine about big government yet want to use the government to enforce their morals. That’s another subject though I realize.

Dear Isolationist Morans (of all political stripe) —

The world is far too connected and globalized to ever cover our eyes and bury our heads in the sand again. It’s been that way since the end of the Cold War and the advent of the Internet.

Also, how the hell do you expect to showcase “American Exceptionalism” if you isolate yourself from the world around you? Idiots.

I wonder what could possibly be the difference now, compared to 2004?

To be sure there is a certain large amount of truth there. However, the conservative element in American society has predominately been isolationist unless their wallet is directly threatened (see the invasions of various Caribbean and Central American states when the dictators were threatened. See also “Major General Smedley Butler”). In a real way, they are simply going back to what they always have preferred to be.

Democrats have been, over the last ten years, generally opposed to global engagement. They supported the Afghanistan war, but not so much the Iraq war even at the start— and definitely not now.

So, you can expect those numbers to keep dropping as long as we’re involved in an actual conflict.

The GOP, on the other hand, has been a big fan of global intervention, nation-building, and the like. They vociferously supported Bush in this, even going so far as to say those not supporting the president in a time of war were traitors.

Does this help you understand the difference?

Debbie Wasserman Schultz pounces on Mitt Romney comment

“Mitt Romney’s comments today at an event with unemployed Floridians that he’s ‘also unemployed’ is inappropriate and insensitive to the millions of Americans looking for work. This comment shows that Mitt Romney – a man who wants for nothing and whose only occupation for more than four years has been to run for President - is incredibly out of touch with what’s going on in our country and around the dinner tables of those who are out of work.

“Being unemployed, Mr. Romney, is not a joke … The fact is, the failed policies of the past, that he is advocating for, got us into the situation we’re in the first place and Americans want neither a repeat of those policies or the type of out-of-touch and failed leadership Mitt Romney represents.”

No, it doesn’t make a great point. It’s racist as all hell, sexist, and grossly offensive to anyone with the slightest sense of common decency.

This is like saying that Birth of a Nation had its good points because it’s supposed to be a patriotic film. WTF.

And “Sieg Des Willens” is a magnificent accomplishment of cinematography, and the excellent acting performances in Jud Suss.

re: #86 Obdicut

Democrats have been, over the last ten years, generally opposed to global engagement. They supported the Afghanistan war, but not so much the Iraq war even at the start— and definitely not now.

So, you can expect those numbers to keep dropping as long as we’re involved in an actual conflict.

The GOP, on the other hand, has been a big fan of global intervention, nation-building, and the like. They vociferously supported Bush in this, even going so far as to say those not supporting the president in a time of war were traitors.

Does this help you understand the difference?

Again with the facts.

This seems like the signal for what the GOP’s strategy is going to be: let the lunatic fringe be racist, sexist, homophobic assholes, and then say “Well, that’s too far, but they have a good point.”

Fucking odious.

I’ll be honest. I’d be far less bothered by the remark if the video had actually made anything close to an actual valid point anywhere inside of that offensive mess. It didn’t, so there’s not really anything to excuse saying it made a “good point”. It just repeated itself, like me.

I know where you’re going with this, but I think the difference is due to a lot of factors and not just stupid partisanship. For one, we’re in debt up to our eyeballs and can’t afford these little adventures anymore. But for another, the manifest failures in Iraq and Afghanistan have turned a lot of people against the idea of intervention. People are tired of war. I’d be very interested to see what a 2007 or 2008 poll would show because hat was when most polls showed even Republicans turning against the wars.

Republicans step up efforts to save Q’Daffy’s regime….
Boehner says House could move to cut off funding for Libya

Boehner said the House was considering its options to exert authority over the administration and that next week the chamber “may be prepared to move on those options.”

The “ultimate option,” Boehner said, is that “Congress has the power of the purse” and could cut off funding for the mission. “Certainly that is an option as well,” he said.

Actually forcing the president’s hand could be difficult, however, because any House-passed funding restriction would have to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate and be signed by Obama himself.

Cantor hints at Libya defunding bill next week

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) on Thursday hinted that the House could take up a bill to defund U.S. military intervention in Libya as early as next week.

Speaking on the House floor, Cantor outlined next week’s House schedule, which he said could include “potential legislation related to the ongoing military conflict in Libya.” House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said earlier in the day that the House could move to cut off funding for Libya based on inadequate answers from the Obama administration about the U.S. intervention.

Good and evil, society, etc are factors but I’m reminded of a quote from Thoreau “There is but little virtue in the actions of masses of men,” The crowd is acting collectively. In San Francisco, a bus driver got an old man’s arm caught in the door, and he dragged him for like a block. MUNI drivers are spectacularly shitty, most of the time, but it appears to have been an accident. The bus wasn’t going that fast, he thought the guy was running next to the bus and banging on the door.

But this was in Chinatown, and the guy he was dragging was Chinese.

The bus got swarmed by a horde of octogenarian Chinese people, screaming and rocking the bus. The only reason they didn’t tip it over was that they were pushing from all sides. Luckily some of the neighborhood big wigs got there and got the crowd under control.

Bryan Fischer: Gay adoption is a social disaster

The pages of the New York Times this morning are all aflutter with a story extolling the skyrocketing increase in the number of gay couples who are adopting children.

This is a social disaster, a social tragedy of the first order, and is something no society that cares for its youngest and most vulnerable citizens would do.

Every homosexual adoption places a child in a home with a missing mother or father. No society that loves children and places their welfare ahead of the desires of narcissistic adults would ever do this.

Children need both a mom and a dad. Divorce tragically can rob a child of either a mother or father presence in the home, and this vacuum has a devastating impact on the child. To intentionally and deliberately and knowingly place vulnerable young children in a home with a missing parent is inexcusably bad public policy.

re: #222 Stanley Sea

They have a serious Tong problem. It came up during the olympics ‘cuz some of the events were in a BAD part of town.

Per wiki (below) they have extremely high property crime rates, and the highest gun crime rate in Canada (which is different than the west coast, natch). Its not Compton, but it can be kind of a scary place.

As of 2008, Vancouver had the seventh highest crime rate, dropping 3 spots since 2005, among Canada’s 27 census metropolitan areas.[119] However, as with other Canadian cities, the over-all crime rate has been falling “dramatically”.[120] Vancouver’s property crime rate is particularly high, ranking among the highest for major North American cities.[121] But even property crime dropped 10.5% between 2004 and 2005.[111] For 2006, Metro Vancouver had the highest rate of gun-related violent crime of any major metropolitan region in Canada, with 45.3 violent offences involving guns for every 100,000 people in Metro Vancouver, slightly higher than Toronto at 40.4 but far above the national average of 27.5.[122] A series of gang-related incidents in early 2009 escalated into what police have dubbed a gang war. Vancouver plays host to special events such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, the Clinton-Yeltsin Summit, or the Symphony of Fire fireworks show that require significant policing. The 1994 Stanley Cup riot overwhelmed police and injured as many as 200 people.[123] A second riot took place following the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.[124]

Tax Expert: Newt in ‘World of Trouble’

“I think he’s in a world of trouble from a tax standpoint,” said Marcus S. Owens, who ran the IRS Exempt Organizations Division for ten years, and who now works in private practice in Washington. “There are clearly enough questions there for the IRS to begin an investigation.”

At issue are the activities of Gingrich’s charity, Renewing American Leadership (ReAL), which was founded with a goal of promoting faith, freedom and free enterprise. The tax-exempt organization paid the salary of Gingrich’s personal spokesman, bought Gingrich’s books and DVDs, and provided Gingrich a copy of the fundraising list it spent more than $1 million to build. Over two years, ReAL made $220,000 in payments to Gingrich Communications, a for-profit business Gingrich owns.

Melanie Sloan, Executive Director of the good government group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said she found those activities troubling. “Charities should be engaged in demonstrably charitable purposes,” Sloan told ABC News. “Here, given that ReAL hasn’t done anything other than send out fundraising appeals, creating a mailing list for Mr. Gingrich to use to contact his supporters, it appears the major, if not sole purpose of the group is to further his political ambitions.”

Not necessarily. It’s certainly possible that the presence of a gun would have scared the others off. It’s also possible that they would have attacked him anyway and gotten the gun away from him. It’s possible he might have gotten scared and shot four or five people. It’s possible that people in the crowd would have been armed and shot him.

It’s all a crapshoot in any individual analysis. The argument about gun control can’t be balanced on the back of anecdote.

The guy alleging that is selling a book…I read the NY Times source article and find him not credible.

On what grounds do you doubt his credibility?

I note that none of the other people involved came out with straightforward denials. It’s all “I don’t remember” - the usual story.

I particularly liked the part where the CIA spokesman said that they didn’t “send any information” on Juan Cole, but notably didn’t assert that they hadn’t been asked to gather such information. In fact, his “denial” was entirely consistent with Carle’s claim that he intercepted the report and that the derogatory comments were removed by Counsel.

Why even have two parties? The only opinions that matter are from republicans.

The thing is, a lot of these people rioting are upstanding citizens on other days. On this day, they’re rioting. You can’t make sure that the people who get guns are only going to be the ‘defender’ type and not the ‘drunken rioter’ type.

One can only hope drunken rioters would have an assault record, which would make them fail the b/g check. Strong rules, also strongly enforced can mitigate that.

re: #262 reloadingisnotahobby

Okay. So who do you think these people were? They looked like a pretty normal crowd of young sports fans to me. They didn’t look like a bunch of meth heads.

Riots are weird, weird things. I’ve been in one— not as a participant— and the vibe is unlike anything else. It’s ugly and exhilarating at the same time.

Bingo. But they aren’t.

re: #265 Rightwingconspirator

It can mitigate it, sure. But a riot is the kind of place where someone who’s never committed a crime before goes ahead and commits one.

This isn’t so much a problem with guns, as a problem with riots. Plenty of people have been beaten to death in riots.

Seriously. I’ve had to make the decision between the 90% and 80% ground beef lately. It’s called being a grad student living entirely on student loans and off the proceeds of whatever I can sell on Amazon.com.

He’s not unemployed. He wouldn’t know the meaning of the word given all the money he’s sitting on. Screw him.

I’d like to see any of these pricks try to live on the $200-$300 a week that they accuse the unemployed of living high off the hog from…..

I don’t mean carrying on with their regular life but only spending $300 a week….I’m talking about finding housing, paying off debts, clothes, etc etc

I broke up a fight in Times Square in 1998 New Years Eve between a bunch of Hispanic kids and one drunk Irish guy. Luckily, the crowd was pretty complacent. It was surprising how much room there was all of a sudden when the fight broke out.

So I’m not that smart. I got involved. Shouldn’t have.

When I got my loan stipend for the summer, the first thing I did was pay my rent upfront for June, July, and August. Then I paid my bills for June and bought car insurance for six months for my mom’s car. I’m living off the rest, and I’m selling as much stuff as I can to bring more in.

Money’s tight, and will be worse when the next round of loans comes in, since tuition will eat most of what I’m going to get. At least I’ll have a roof over my head and be able to drive legally until the next round of loans comes in.

Some asshole sitting on $200 million telling me that he’s unemployed can go fuck himself. I’m not impressed.

Since you were at a business, wouldn’t they have been private fights? *ducks*

Oh yes I distinctly recall the DNC riots here in LA. The whole jewelry district literally boarded up, along with the Bank Of America. I worked that day and it was plenty scary. I have a lasting disdain for the anarchist groups as a result.
