Government Accountability Office Finds No Evidence to Support Breitbart and O’Keefe’s Attack on ACORN

The GAO exonerates ACORN of right wing smears, too late
Politics • Views: 33,585

The Government Accountability Office released a report today showing that Andrew Breitbart and James O’Keefe got away with a gigantic hoax on the American public, resulting in the unjust demise of an organization that helped the poorest and most disenfranchised: GAO Finds Little to Support Congress’ Abolition of ACORN.

A report issued today by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) finds little to support the charges that led to the demise of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), a grassroots consumer advocacy organization driven out of existence by Congressional critics.

The GAO found that monitoring of awards to ACORN by government agencies generally consisted of reviewing progress reports and making site visits. Of 22 investigations of alleged election and voter registration fraud, most were closed without prosecution, the report found.

One of eight investigations of alleged voter registration fraud resulted in guilty pleas and seven were closed without action due to lack of evidence.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) reported five closed matters – one resolved, one dismissed and the others dropped after FEC “found no reason to believe the violations occurred.”

At its peak, ACORN was a collection of 1,200 community-based organizations in 100 U.S. cities that advocated for low- and moderate-income families.

In 2009, conservative activists released selectively edited videos claiming to show ACORN employees giving advice on hiding prostitution activities and avoiding taxes.

It will be a bit of the end justifies the means, and since ACORN was dissolved it must have been evil.

Allegations of voter registration fraud and videotapes of questionable behavior by ACORN employees raised concerns about ACORN, and Congress passed fiscal year 2010 laws prohibiting federal funds from being awarded to ACORN and ACORN related organizations.

That’s a summary of the situation. GAO was not investigating the prostitution videos. They were specifically investigating alleged misuse of federal funds and voter fraud, which the Right has been yammering about for years. Glance over the full report.

I think you’re just confusing a couple of things.

Yes, what the GAO was investigating was allegations of voter fraud— which were also propagated by Brietbart— but the reason why ACORN was in such the laser-sight was because of the dishonestly edited videos.

Brietbart also spread the ‘voter fraud’ meme, just not with edited videos. But the edited videos were certainly in service to that end.

He’s been turning every way but loose in the case so far. Last I heard, his lawyers were trying to get the Sherrod lawsuit declared a “SLAPP” lawsuit and subsequently thrown out. Or, failing that, get the case transferred to California, in the hopes that their more stringent ant-SLAPP laws will work in his favor.

[Link: www.gao.gov…]

That’s the report. Did you read it? All 74 pages? I didn’t.

Why GAO Did This Study
The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) was established in 1970 to advocate for low-income families. Allegations of voter registration fraud and videotapes of questionable behavior by ACORN employees raised concerns about ACORN, and Congress passed fiscal year 2010 laws prohibiting federal funds from being awarded to ACORN and ACORN related organizations.

Allegations were raised because of these videos and then found to be bogus, forever staining the name of ACORN and all the good work they did. But you’d rather defend AB.

Read my correction to my comment. There was “not” I left out. The voter registration fraud was a separate issue from the videos. It had to do with all these voter registrations turned in with ridiculous names like the roster of the Dallas Cowboys. That wasn’t really a Breitbart thing. And it was the more serious allegation. There are people out there who insist ACORN stole he 2006 and 2008 elections.

I’m not going to defend AB at all. I’m a conservative and AB drives me nucking futs. He gets attention going after conservative bette noires while the real investigative heroes out there go unmentioned. Even if we imagine a Bizzarroworld where everything he ever said were true (no laughing please) he would not have done nearly as much as good as, say, the LA Times exposing Bell California’s corruption. I think you are technically correct, the report focused on the finance aspects and alleged voter fraud, but because of the way the government was convinced to stop funds, it’s difficult to separate the types of putative fraud.

I saw your retraction. Sorry we crossed posts.

But still, the article was very clear. You can read the first page of the PDF if you don’t want to read all 74 pages. There was a problem with one agency as I understand it, regarding voter fraud, yet the whole thing went into bankruptcy on false allegations. Conservatives wanted the whole organization shut down and humiliated which they succeeded in doing. Breitbart and O’Keefe caused that.

Make no mistake — ACORN was targeted as part of a deliberate campaign of race-baiting and fraud, aimed at damaging the organizations that help the poor and minorities.

This has been Breitbart and O’Keefe’s modus operandi all along, and they’re not operating in a vacuum. They’re the attack dogs of a consciously directed war against groups like ACORN, Planned Parenthood, and the NAACP.

The congruence of these efforts is not a coincidence.

One up for your point about the LA Times doing more good than AB on his hypothetical best day ever. Your first paragraph makes me a little crazy. “There are people out there…” There are people out there that think Neil Armstrong stayed on earth, think Israel did 9/11 and Anna Nicole Smith married for love.

Neither Bush nor Acorn stole the elections. Sheesh.

As regards Bush 2000, for some values of the word “stole”, the
United States Civil Rights Commission begs to differ.

See in particular, the section entitled “Disenfranchised Voters.”

Long ago, when I was a lot more naive than I am now, Andrew Breitbart once tried to get me to attend David Horowitz’s “Restoration Weekend.” These kinds of events are where operations like the ACORN and Planned Parenthood stings are planned.

I am familiar with the material, but that’s at worst a mismanaged state, not a deliberate theft of a national election IMO. Most issues of disenfranchisement can be overcome by a motivated individual. Sadly, voting is not taken seriously by many, so just moving a polling place can reduce voter attendance. *sigh*

More than that - it was part of a multi-pronged attempt to destroy the voting base of the Democratic Party. It’s not just an ideological thing - they’re attempting to bring about very real consequences.

The attack on women’s rights, the attack on gay rights, the attack on unions, the attack on science — all of these are part of a coordinated effort.

One of the biggest problems with the right these days is that there is no one out there who can distance the movement from the fringe.

In the old days, you had William F Buckley who had the guts to say in print that the John Birchers and Ayn Rands of the world were kooks and had no place in the conservative movement.

We need someone today with that kind of credibility who will come out and say that the Andrew Breitbarts and Glen Becks of the world are loons.

There’s a Woody Allen retelling of the Binding of Isaac where Abraham, at the end, says to God, “Doesn’t this prove my love for you, that I was willing to sacrifice my son?”

God replies, “It proves that some people will do anything, no matter how asinine, as long as a deep, resonant, well-modulated voice tells them to.”

Lord Mountebank says Obama has already ceded our sovereignty:

This is apparently not considered a conspiracy theory, because he has a pleasant speaking voice.

That was posted in October 2009 — so if this was going to happen in “the next few weeks”… or was that the Copehagen thing that fell apart?

At the youtube vid in question:

UPDATE

The Copenhagen Climate Summit is over and thankfully it appears to have been largely a flop, falling fall short of the expectations of most global warmists.

Also, the youtube uploader for that vid recommends going to a site were the most recent, “top of the fold” article is written by HotAir’s Ed Morrissey.

Here’s the pertinent part from the report.

You missed the very next sentence:

GAO was asked to report on these organizations, including (1) how much federal funding was awarded to them for fiscal years 2005 through 2009 and the purpose of the funding, (2) the extent to which federal agencies’ monitoring of these awards detected issues identified by audits, (3) the nature and results of any federal investigations or prosecutions conducted of these organizations from fiscal years 2005 through 2009, and (4) how federal agencies implemented provisions prohibiting the award of funds.

Here’s the PDF of the whole report:
[Link: www.gao.gov…]

The report doesn’t have anything to do with the breitbart videos and doesn’t even mention the videos or the allegations. Pay close attention to page 2 “Why GAO did this study” and page 46: “Objectives, Scope, and Methodology”.

$87.00? Stranahan’s gonna destroy me with an $87.00 film?

I love it when wingnuts get goofy.

How many of the 12 announced supporters do you figure have been banned from here?

Actually, I’m likely to be more interested in the Japanese woman than her outfit. I might even consider marriage if, included in the vows, she promised to cuss me out only in her native language.

But, wouldn’t that be worse? Not knowing what she said?

A large percentage of my negative karma points, if not a majority, came from defending ACORN during that whole smear job and resultant actions by our thoughtful and well informed lawmakers.

Why are these class attacks so hard to perceive for such a large segment of our population?

184 labman57  Fri, Jun 17, 2011 11:41:42am

But hey, it resulted in ACORN being dismantled, so it’s all good. Machiavellian philosophy at work
