Obama Set to Announce Afghanistan Drawdown

Finding a way out of America’s longest war
Politics • Views: 37,367

Word is out tonight that President Obama intends to announce his plan for withdrawing from Afghanistan this Wednesday, and the Washington Post reports that the pace of the drawdown may be faster than the military wants.

The announcement is also expected to lay out a glide-path for further withdrawals between now and the end of 2012, including the 33,000 so-called “surge” troops he sent there early last year as part of a broad counterinsurgency strategy that the administration has said succeeded in clearing Taliban fighters from key areas in southern Afghanistan.

The number and pace of the withdrawals, from a current total of about 100,000 troops, has been a contentious issue within the White House and between the administration and the U.S. military, which has warned against a significant withdrawal before gains of the last year are solidified.

The administration had hoped to couple Obama’s announcement on troop withdrawals with news of progress on political reconciliation with Taliban leaders. But discussions have stalled following several rounds of talks this spring between U.S. officials and Taliban interlocutors, first in Qatar and later in Germany.

Afghanistan: How to spend lots of billions of dollars and get lots of people killed, and all you get is a stupid T-Shirt.

It'll be poppy fields and Taliban as far as the eye can see. Just like before we spent billions and got lots of people killed.

If Obama pulls back faster than the military wants he's a fool. What he knows about military operations is very small. But I'll wait for the speech before rendering any final judgements. We've seen inside sources be wrong and I'm not going to jump to conclusions.

The military wants to stick around because they've been infected with mission creep.

But I remember distinctly that the reason we went there was to get Osama bin Laden. He's been got. Mission accomplished. And Karzai has turned out to be the sort of slime that there's no benefit to us, at all, to be supporting. He's just like the Taliban, just with a slightly prettier hat. He won a rigged election, his brother's banking billions in American "aid" money...

Come on home, boys and girls.

I don't agree. And right now there's no way to declare victory. It would be seen as us throwing up our hands and giving up. I don't think that a good idea without a credible plan to retaliate if Afghanistan becomes a terrorist sanctuary again.

Can we look past the partisan aspects a minute? The larger issue really is what happens in Afghanistan (and Iraq) after we get out. It matters to millions of people. People who deserve better than war, and then only further oppression. Where do those fighters go? Do they return to homes & become ordinary Afghans or do they travel to jihad?

First,it absolutely will be a terrorist hotbed. It never wasn't one.

Second, our plan is simple. When it once more officially becomes Taliban Central we'll send lots of people to get killed, spend billions more dollars, and take another babysitting gig.

General Atomics MQ-1 Predator carrying 2 AGM-114 Hellfire missiles will do a fine job as far as I am concerned.

We can not "win" in the classical sense. They know that and are hiding until we leave whether tomorrow or 20 years from now. What we can do is leave, let the Karzai government fall (and it will, quickly) and then give non-military aid to whoever ends up in power with the proviso that if they stick their noses outside of their country we'll unleash the UAV's. (Again. And again. Repeat as necessary. :)

I sell seats at conferences involving defense matters, yes. Most of those seats are sold to members of the military or civilian DoD employees. But I have sold seats to defense contractors, and one of those seats was for a Reconstruction and Stabilization event in February. But that's about it. Most events I've sold don't involve overseas operations at all.

The real fun will be watching the GOP juggle how we can't get involved in Libya and we also can't leave Afghanistan.

Yours and some of the other comments instantly worry about partisan politics. That's a shame.

It's hard for me to compare Libya and Afghanistan. We went into Afghanistan with congressional approval, as our constitution calls for. It seemed to me Obama could've gotten biprtisan congressional approval for Libya had he chosen to follow the constitution. But, for whatever reasons, he chose to break the law and the constitution and go against everything he said on matters of this nature when he was Candidate Obama. When a president does that, he'll get little sympathy for me when he finds himself with political problems as a result.

As for Afghanistan, it's difficult for a layperson like myself to assess the decisions being made today. It may take years, perhaps MANY years, before we know if the decisions being made right now are wise ones. I can only hope they are. Emotionally, I'm glad to hear troops will be coming home.

amendment protecting our Defense of Marriage Act and enshrining in constitutional law marriage as it is
defined in our “DOMA.”

So yeah! Your family member is the enemy to me. Sorry dude! I don't sell defense seats or whatever. I'm just this guy who doesn't like being demonized! Or having my friends demonized.

So no. i'll never apologize to your family. Not ever. They should apologize to me.

re: #17 Rightwingconspirator

Can we look past the partisan aspects a minute? The larger issue really is what happens in Afghanistan (and Iraq) after we get out. It matters to millions of people. People who deserve better than war, and then only further oppression. Where do those fighters go? Do they return to homes & become ordinary Afghans or do they travel to jihad?

We've only switched one oppression for another in Afghanistan. Hell, we might just be doing the same thing in Libya now.

So they go back to doing what they've always been known for doing. The most we can do is put a set of them into power that's not as likely to strike back as the Taliban did.

re: #86 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

IL R Party platform, in part:

The family is society’s central building block. Thus, efforts to strengthen family life are efforts to improve life for
everyone.

Our children need secure and nurturing environments, which are best found within the traditional family. No law should be enacted nor policy implemented without fully contemplating the effect it would have on children and their families.

Though not universally achievable, the ideal, best environment for children is within a two‐parent family based on the principle of marriage between one man and one woman. The Republican Party endorses a constitutional
amendment protecting our Defense of Marriage Act and enshrining in constitutional law marriage as it is defined in our “DOMA.”

Our laws should strongly support and celebrate the loving commitment a man and a woman make to each other in marriage. Our laws should strongly support and celebrate a loving, married couple bringing new life into the
world and rearing their children in a secure and nurturing environment from conception to adulthood. No law should undermine the importance of that union, divide that union nor unduly burden the efforts of parents to
rear a family in a safe and nurturing environment.

Those persons in our society best equipped and motivated to protect and nurture children are their parents, not government bureaucrats, teachers, counselors or social workers. The Republican Party endorses legislation to
re‐establish the right of parents to consent to health care involving their minor children, regardless of whether such care entails diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted disease, alcoholism, drug abuse or mental
illness, and particularly in the consequential arena of abortion and contraception.

Special rights for heteros, special rights for conservatives; two-tiered society for everyone else. Screw that.

Flashback to the Afghanistan surge oval office decision:
[Link: www.newsweek.com...]

Inside the Oval Office, Obama asked Petraeus, “David, tell me now. I want you to be honest with me. You can do this in 18 months?”

“Sir, I’m confident we can train and hand over to the ANA [Afghan National Army] in that time frame,” Petraeus replied.

“Good. No problem,” the president said. “If you can’t do the things you say you can in 18 months, then no one is going to suggest we stay, right?”

“Yes, sir, in agreement,” Petraeus said.

“Yes, sir,” Mullen said.

The president was crisp but informal. “Bob, you have any problems?” he asked Gates, who said he was fine with it.

The president then encapsulated the new policy: in quickly, out quickly, focus on Al Qaeda, and build the Afghan Army. “I’m not asking you to change what you believe, but if you don’t agree with me that we can execute this, say so now,” he said. No one said anything.

“Tell me now,” Obama repeated.

“Fully support, sir,” Mullen said.

“Ditto,” Petraeus said.

The first my relative knew of my job was when I told him, nor was I hired to work on defense events. Defense is where I was assigned based on my greater knowledge of the government and military compared to most of those hired alongside me. At the time I was hired, said relative had not been elected, nor would he be for another 4.5 months. Nor do the events I work on deal with political matters. Governmental yes, Political no.

A lot of folks used to say that Iraq was the new Vietnam, the war that was gonna break America's back and leave us once again with egg on our faces. I think the reality is that Afghanistan has become our new Vietnam.

Both started out with good intentions, both ended up becoming little more than babysitting corrupt regimes, both saw our forces doing the bulk of the fighting because the local forces either were incompetent or on the other side's payroll, both have expanded to surrounding countries, and both saw us crawling away with our tails between our legs.

Somewhere, on the cosmic scoreboard, Afghanistan's record as the graveyard of civilizations remains solid.

So when this dude started to say why it was wrong, I pretty much filibustered him until he surrendered. I just do not understand the concept. re: #83 wlewisiii

How does obeying the unconstitutional War Powers Resolution make any difference? The Libyan operations were well within what presidents have done for 200 years (see the Quasi-War with France for the fist example).

The issue is whether or not what THIS Commander in Chief is doing is illegal and unconstitutional. You don't prove someone is acting within the law and the constitution by pointing to others who have violated the law and constitution and gotten away with it.

As far as the War Powers Act, Obama invoked it when he took us into Libya.

Furthermore, Obama's own DoD General Counsel, OLC Chief, and Attorney General all advised him he would be acting in violation of the law.

See the NY Times:

Presidents have the legal authority to override the legal conclusions of the Office of Legal Counsel and to act in a manner that is contrary to its advice, but it is extraordinarily rare for that to happen. Under normal circumstances, the office’s interpretation of the law is legally binding on the executive branch.

There are lots of governments in the US.

It took the SCOTUS 9 full years to decide state and local anti-miscegenation statutes infringed on people's rights. It won't take as long for these antigay statutes, but it's not as easy as claiming "you're infringing on my rights". Were that the case, the laws would not exist at all.

Income tax is only $100 until you get your first monopoly, after which you have to pay the full $200.

So my eight-year-old daughter has a chance to get a monopoly, but declines. I ask her why. "Because then I would have to pay the full income tax!"

See? This eight-year-old has an innate grasp of GOP economic theory.

A college education is way too expensive.

And far too overrated. I say that not in an anti-intellectual sense, but in the sense that (as you say) the price for it is way too high, while the dividends reaped are way too low to justify the cost.

And we have come to over-value the careers that can be had by an over-priced college education, and horribly undervalue the careers that can be found in the trades, or skilled labor. Which I think contributes to a lot of problems, college tuition being only one of them.

Mike Rowe has a pretty decent TED Talk on the undervaluing of the trades, if you're interested and have twenty minutes to burn.

There's damn good money to be made in skilled trades, and we have a terrible deficit of young folk interested in them these days.

I think this may be due to how our culture currently views a college education versus a trade education, in that working with your hands, skilled or not, is seen as something that people of lesser intellect or breeding are meant for.

Which I think results in many finding themselves in this position.

I quality basic education is necessary for democracy to work. And I consider at least some collage education to be in that category. Trades, as you say, are definitely part of the equation. I will go as far to say that it is in our National interest to have an educated workforce. A BS/BA collage degree should be paid by tax dollars.

A skilled tradesman is an educated person. And often, more educated than a white collar. But far too many trade jobs that were protected by unions have been decimated by cheap labor. I am old enough to remember when a carpenter was a job that made enough money to raise a family. Now, not much more than flipping burgers, unless you are the contractor, and then competition is ridiculous.

I guess it's a different position when both the "passion" and the "eventual trade" end up in similar categories. I loved math class and crunching numbers when I was a kid, still aced them in college. But I could just never imagine myself doing that for a career in, say, accounting.

Strict fee regulation would be necessary to make that work, otherwise we just end up with the same outrageous tuition, or worse, only being paid by the rest of us rather than the student.

Smart >> ignorant

I suppose that "smart" is preferable to "ignorant", but I don't see them as being mutually exclusive. A person can be incredibly smart, and still be incredibly ignorant. Or, incredibly smart yet incredibly uneducated.

And yes, smart is ambiguous as a description. I should not have used it. Common sense, aware of the world's dynamics and needs, is one part. Know how to do a Legendre transformation is another. Know how to turn a piece of wood, metal, etc into art, a tool, etc is another. But ignorance is something we need to eradicate. All need to learn critical thinking and basic logic.

Skilled trades jobs cannot possibly be decimated by cheap labor. The skill set required is hard to master, and necessary to the work, and the work commands a good wage.

The head of Siemens complained today that his company has had a hard time finding American workers for factory jobs, because of a lack of skills. That most applicants simply haven't the education needed to do the work. hard to find hirable applicants.

Jobs that don't actually require any unusual degree of skill, that just anybody can walk in off the street and do, are vulnerable to cheap-labor competition.

It does society no favor to erect barriers to entry and protect work of the second kind so that [a lucky few] people can earn a good living. The wider consequence is that [more] people spend their time trying to fix things so they, and not another, get the high-pay, low-skill job. And [many] other people cannot afford to get work done that they need done, because the price is artificially high. And then everybody complains about the high cost of living, and forgets that part of it is high because some government rule has made it high.

The evidence is clear that contractors will hire workers for cheap because those workers will accept much less money. Paying a skilled carpenter, or electrician, etc, enough money to live is an artificial cost is why USA's middle class is disappearing. And where is this "lucky few" comment come from? A Country can only be strong if the Citizens of that Country are strong. This seems obvious to me.

One of the misnomers about illegals is they're unskilled. The groups I've dealt with are anything but. They have their own internship-style training. Really? Labor is people. Labor are vital components of a functioning society. Labor are Citizens of these United States. The laws of business can but my shiny metal ass. Again, it seems simple to me, if one believes in a strong America, then business must also work towards a strong America. Afghanistan is a much more difficult problem than Iraq.

To "win" I would define as leaving a stable central government that has control of the country and borders. Right now the government in Kabul almost has control of the city limits.

Afghanistan needs huge infrastructure improvements to allow the ANA, ANP and governement officials to reach all the provinces and control the borders. It is a huge task.

That being said, I think we are getting closer to an Afghan National Army that can better defend the country, but there is a long way to go. Even after our troops draw down, we are going to need to provide huge amounts of aid for decades for Afghanistan to have a chance of joining the civilized world.

Name one? sheesh.. First off, a bachelor's degree is not part of the discussion. A BA/BS will not teach one to do anything without more training. I will take your list, you think anyone can pick up building a home you would be willing to live in? Sure, most could learn it, but learning is required. Just like anything else. What about a machinist that can build parts for whatever is required? What about a woodworker that can build beautiful furniture that actually lasts long enough to hand down to your children? What about your favorite mechanic that can figure out your car's problem?

Everything you can touch was made by a trade. Sure, automation has changed much. But skills are still needed to tell the machines what to do.

Really? Labor is people. Labor are vital components of a functioning society. Labor are Citizens of these United States. The laws of business can but my shiny metal ass. Again, it seems simple to me, if one believes in a strong America, then business must also work towards a strong America. A company that only cares about share holder value will work against USA's best interest.

Pick a team. I have.

That's the key to the "Antactric Smoke-Out" campaign. The tobacco mosaic virus is a mother--extremely stable and easily spread. It might have a "green energy" role in improving the effectiveness of batteries.

Well, if we put Obama at the 75th percentile among presidents (or does anyone want to insist that he's another Lincoln or Jefferson?), he'd come in at about 120, 130, somewhere in there. That would put him well above average among "lizards", but only by about 1 standard deviation. Some 10 per cent of us, give or take, figure to be "smarter", in the technical sense of IQ score, and better at chess or wordplay or whatever.

But when it comes to political instincts, well, he's president and I doubt we have a state governor amongst our ranks.

Define victory in this context. What conditions have to exist before you would reduce troop strength there?

A minimal victory would be characterized by this: that al Qaeda did not get to reconstitute training camps in Afghanistan. They could exist in the shadows...they exist, now, in the shadows in Europe, Africa, Pakistan, etc. But we would know we had "won" if they didn't get to put up a banner, fly a flag, recruit openly, set up a firing range and an explosives school and so on.

To be honest, I think the whole problem with Afghanistan is that we followed the politically correct route of allowing a damaged culture to vote in their own leaders in the wake of a military takeover, when the damaged culture was the whole cause of the problems there in the first place.

Sorry, but given what Afghanistan did to us (that is, unapologetically providing sanctuary for the terrorist organization that attacked us), we didn't "owe" them an immediate democracy. We should have installed a 100% secular puppet state and worked on unpropagandizing the masses before handing the reins of power back to them.

It would be instructional to look at all of our (NATO) casualties arrayed against the detailed mission they were performing. We leveled the Taliban rather cheaply, then took a lot of hits in the "nation building" phase. At most, we should have gone in, jacked them up, and split--with a promise to return if needed.

They weren't Afghanistan. There was a functioning industrialized infrastructure going on there, and an almost entirely non-tribe-based society. They'd been prosperous nation-states before, in a global economic and diplomatic network with the Allies, and wanted to get back there.

Listing those without military service in reverse order:
Obama
Clinton
FDR
Hoover
Coolidge
Harding
Wilson
Taft
Cleveland
Van Buren
JQ Adams
J Adams

So 31 out of 43 served, and 12 have not.

FDR was physically disabled, and served as Assistant SecNavy--close enough.

Actually and interestingly, one of the misconceptions many have is linking Taliban to the poppies. When they came to power in Afghanistan, they cut production by a lot - half or more. When the Taliban got kicked out, production began to increase (though not to pre-taliban levels).

I've argued in other places that fighting both drugs and the Taliban and thinking they're the same is failing to know the enemy.

They all serve as Commander in Chief.

Not the original question. That answer applies to all the others who want to shift FDR and the Adams family as well. The question was how many had actually served.

If you start allowing sorta-military service you start pulling your biases. Did Hoover's time guiding Marines during the Boxer revolution count? What of Taft's service as Secretary of War? Should we truly count Jefferson's Virginia colonelcy given it was purely an administrative award?

That said, you (Darthstar) have also grasped the crux. Their lives and actions prior to becoming president are immaterial. They became the commander in chief, and as such had the position and authority of the ultimate commissioned officer, a de facto military service position.

He also pointed to the danger of opium stocks held by the Taliban. "For a number of years, Afghan opium production has exceeded world demand. Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Still no deal on the NYS marriage equality act (gay marriage bill) or rent control, but both bills are now linked to each other and a deal will likely be struck this week to allow passage of both. For now, the legislature is passing one-day extenders on rent control as they haggle over the new limits on income and rent increases/surcharges that can be imposed. Most of the GOPers want to see the law continued at the current limits, while Democrats and NYC GOPers want the higher income limits so as to keep the rent control program from releasing more units to market rate.

The MEA is being held up over language that would protect religious groups, particularly those that operate meeting/banquet halls to insulate them from liability over refusing to grant access to gay weddings.

No, and that's a specific flaw repeating. The Taliban is not involved in storage and sales. There are some people who claim to be Taliban who are involved in the trade. The Taliban takes a cut (I called it taxes for simplicity, not accuracy).

Let me give some somewhat comparable examples. Not all Sicilian Catholics were Mafia. Not all Republicans are Tea Partiers or members of the KKK.

Hitting the opium production trade hurt the Taliban, but the hurt was incidental as the Taliban proper also disliked the trade.

re: #416 kirkspencer

Except that as CinC, they are the civilian head in control of the military. It's an explicit distinction - we have civilian control over the military in that they are answerable to a civilian leader.

Military service prior to being President does give such presidents insight into how the military operates, the costs/wages of war - but assuming positions like Sec. Def., War Dept Secretaries, gives those leaders knowledge that they might not have gained from positions outside the sphere of the military.

Yet, going forward it's far more likely today for a president to be elected without military service precisely because we no longer have compulsory military service, and the WWs ended decades ago when millions of Americans were brought under arms.

In coming decades, it will be much less of an issue that a presidential candidate lacks military service as far fewer people in the general population are in the service themselves - the percentage of those who serve in the military versus the general population continues to decline as technology and downsizing have reduced the size of the military.

The report itself, and not Mr. Costa's commentary on the report.

Local strongmen, regional warlords, and criminals collect the money and do the trade and storage and such. Neither the report nor Mr. Costa show the connection between those groups and the Taliban beyond the ushur (pseudotax) which is paid so the Taliban leaves them alone.

The separation was distinctly made in the preliminary release of the 2006 report. No other release, prelim or complete, has made the distinction. At the same time none show an explicit connection beyond the ushur collection.

No other release, prelim or complete, has made the distinction.

Except one (of several) even earlier
[Link: fpc.state.gov...]

Read the report you link more carefully. bin Laden and his forces are directly involved. The Taliban taxes and permits but doesn't actually trade. (Hutchison's proofs of credible links via actual receipts turned out to be receipts for 'taxes' paid.)

I'm going to repeat myself. The Taliban's involvement in the opium trade is secondary. This does not make it small. It means, however, that attacking the trade, worthwhile though it may be in itself, is not a primary attack on the Taliban. This erroneous interlinking makes such attacks less effective due to improper recognition of the enemy.

No, that's not really accurate. Say rather that the attacks have less impact on the Taliban than planners anticipate.

Reads like snooping to me. I mean why not start hiring a private investigator to check the background on everyone before we hire them or let them rent a house or apartment? We're getting that way though. Americans no longer trust each other. We have lost trust in ourselves as a society and have become one ever increasing paranoid state and society.

Totally.

I belong to the facebook group for a political advocacy organization for marijuana legalization. Does that mean I'm a big stoner who'll not show up to work? No. It means I rationally think that taxing and legalizing marijuana is a better idea than criminalizing it. But since that's on my FB, an employer could see it.

Likewise, I'm a 'fan' of Planned Parenthood. What if the hiring manager is anti-choice?

Facebook makes it very easy to get the information that is supposed to not be asked in interviews-- age, orientation, health status, etc. This is a terrible idea.

I dunno, can you change your name? My FB account isn't under my real name as I'm super-paranoid when it comes to cyberspace. Even then, I have pretty much everything set to "friends only".

FB has been known to make privacy settings confusing, and I don't really turst them to protect my personal data. Not because I think they're evil or there's some grand conspiracy, but because companies can get greedy, sloppy, etc. Look what happened with Sony recently. And RSA's SecureID.

If you put it on the internet, it's no longer private.

I don't like it, but that's been the reality for years.

Almost ten years ago I made an offhand comment in a personal email to a co-worker. About a month later I had the joy of facing a review board that was assembled on the basis of that comment. That's when I learned the rule.

fwiw, I think we're headed to a private/public divide that boils down to:
Info about you from YOU is public. Info about you from OTHERS is private. The exceptions to both cases shall exist only when explicitly stated or required by law/regulation.

Here's the way I see it. No private entity other than Facebook itself should be allowed to collect the information gathered therin. Neither should they be allowed to make that information available to other private entities. It's that simple. It should remain within the Facebook confines itself or Facebook should be subject to lawsuits for sharing that information with other private entities in this manner. The same would apply if Charles decided to share what I say here with another private entity. Law enforcement regarding a law enforcement matter would be another issue.

The same would apply if Charles decided to share what I say here with another private entity. Law enforcement regarding a law enforcement matter would be another issue.

The problem as I see it, is that Facebook, Google, etc. make huge amounts of money from targeted advertising that relies on data mining their members' preferences.

Putting anything on electronic media is exactly like broadcasting it loudly from a PA system 24 hrs per day. I can't even blame the 'snoopers' for collecting information that is blasted at them by social media. There is no such thing as Internet privacy.

Data mining would be another matter as well. Then it's a matter of seeing what toothpaste people prefer. Or Apple vs. PCs, iPhone, etc. Consumer data isn't personal in my estimation. This on the other hand reeks of gathering personal information to be gathered by a outside private entity which can and will include the mining of personal information regarding religion, lifestyles, sexual orientation, political ideologies, emotional information, etc.

IOW the government can allow and regulate it to be gathered yet they can't disallow and regulate it to not be gathered? Which serves society more? To disallow this or allow it? I'm talking in a free society. A free society, allegedly, for individuals and not corporations and the government state. Is this the American way?

But this has been going on for years and years

My wife (God Bless Her) is a sucker for LOTS of charitable donations
("oh,,, but I only sent them $5")

We have our "favorite" charities that we give "X" amount on a yearly basis

What she doesn't understand is that ALL of them sell their lists of donors to other orgs and thats how the others get your name/number/address.
SO,,, on the one hand, she gets uspset when its 8 at night and we get 4 calls OR when she goes out to the mailbox and there are 5 fliers in there for orgs we've never given too/ heard of

I was actually born to American parents in Salisbury England. As our UK contingent will know, you can see Stonehenge from Salisbury, if you climb an especially high steeple (8 miles north).

Years ago, I briefly dated a woman who was absorbed in New Age lore. She thought I must have tremendous paranormal potential to have been born so close to Stonehenge on midsummer day (woo-woo!). She was disappointed to learn that I had little confidence in such phenomena, to say the least. Not long after that she announced that she was going to Peru with a group of like-minded folk to meet some UFOs at a harmonic node or magnetic convergence or some other barren rock. She said there were rumors that Jesus Christ himself would put in an appearance. I told her to be sure and get pictures, and an autograph if possible. She denounced my cynicism and said I was out of touch with reality. As I said, the relationship was brief.

Conspiracy theorists will likely call the baby a plant, and yes, we cannot prove that the alleged crying baby isn't a high-tech animatronic robot designed by the CIA for the White House to melt the hearts of a divided nation. Parents of crying babies will recognize that Obama's comforting of the crying baby seems almost as genuine as the gloating look that he shoots his wife once he quells the baby storm:

I just scanned back through this thread and was a bit surprised that I'm the only person in this thread who got a post negatively rated (actually, both of mine got negatively rated). Is that because I'm a newbie, or because I criticized President Obama's refusal to seek congressional approval for Libya?

Whatever the case, for more on the issue of Libya, this NY Times Op-Ed by Yale law profressor Bruce Ackerman is worth a read: Legal Acrobatics, Illegal War, about how Obama is shattering "the traditional legal process the executive branch has developed to sustain the rule of law over the past 75 years."

Also, back to Afghanistan for a moment: Going through the thread, it appears many commenters are confused and think that Obama is planning to withdraw all or most of our troops from Afghanistan. The NY Times' coverage of this makes things clearer.

Obama is considering different options for how quickly to withdraw the SURGE troops. The most agreessive plan he's considering would bring home the 30,000 surge troops within 12 months. The article notes:

Even after all 30,000 troops are withdrawn, roughly 68,000 troops will remain in Afghanistan, twice the number as when Mr. Obama assumed office.

So, we're not talking about withdrawing from Afghanistan, folks. We're talking about reducing the troops down from the surge levels to a level that remains TWICE AS LARGE as were there when Obama took office.

Not sure if anyone else pointed that out in the thread, but I wanted to clear up that confusion some of you had.
