Hey everyone...don't forget to play the lottery today!

From my friend's "acrobotica.com" site...

On June 27th in small villages across the country, a lottery takes place — at least according to Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery”. ... It was also 63-years-and-a-day ago that the 3,800 word story was published in The New Yorker, prompting a lot of hate mail to both the author and the magazine.

People still don't have much of a sense of humor.

Following close on the heels of Wisconsin, Texas votes to defund Planned Parenthood, and raises Wisconsin one by also trying to convert Texas's Medicaid program to a block grant.

Because Texas has done so well in providing health care for all its citizens up to now.

///

And I ask myself, how exactly has it happened that the Right has been this successful in demonizing Planned Parenthood? It can't still be some residual from the O'Keefe "sting" videos, can it? Why does nobody from the left (or, heck, the center) step up to defend PP's work? The group has been federally funded since 1970! Reagan had no problem with them, nor did the Bushes.

I used to see SRV all the time here in Austin in the early-mid 80s. He would play free concerts at the shores of Town Lake (where there now stands a statue in his honor) and at legendary Austin blues club Antones among other venues.

He was such a big part of the music scene here. Then he got real big, and then he died. Way too young.

The guy went and died on my 35th birthday. We were camping outside of Calgary when news of the helicopter crash came over the radio. The original report was that Eric was on the 'copter which shocked me, but when I learned it was SRV, it sat me on my ass. I'd fallen in love with his style when he was with Bowie and then even more so when I heard his Austin gigs.

Deputies: Woman sprayed us with breast milk

[Link: www.komonews.com...]

"DELAWARE, Ohio -- A central Ohio woman accused of spraying sheriff's deputies with breast milk is facing charges including disorderly conduct.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to a call about a domestic dispute early Saturday, and a man told them his wife was drinking at a wedding and hit him before locking herself in a car.

The sheriff says deputies found the woman in a car and tried to talk with her, but she didn't cooperate.

He says when deputies tried to remove her, she said she was a breast-feeding mother, then exposed part of her chest and sprayed them with breast milk."

Perhaps not quite the boob story you were looking for....

The architectural field is one of the biggest rip-offs around. Either they're overcharging their clients (typically 10 percent of construction costs) or hiring H-1Bs to become "interns" to draw (poorly I might add) their construction documents. The intern aspect is a known scam they've been doing for decades.

Yep. They do it all the time. I've seen drawings from a lot of big firms. They typically give me a laugh from time to time. They'll put the "parts" in the funniest of places. Some of them that are FOB don't even know what plywood is. Most don't since architecture schools typically train architects to be something they'll never get to be unless they happen to become one of the few "Gods of Architecture." Then they get to design buildings with leaky roofs.

The thing about "The Lottery" is that it's actually quite understated when you read it...it's only when someone "wins" and you see their reaction that you begin to understand the horror of it...and it's not Halloween VII horror, but human character horror.

That's rather unlikely. Businesses that contribute to the Republican Party would take it on the chin in that case.

They'll do what they have to to keep that from happening, but only after President Obama agrees to gut Medicare and Social Security so they can blame for it when they run against him in 2012. It's all about beating down the black guy...don't think it's about anything else.

AGW is dead...there needs to be another way, but I don't expect the BO admin to pursue the alternatives...in the end someone will have to step up and put together a comprehensive energy/national security bill to circumvent deniers...that's the best short term hope...but even then, the efforts will fall way short of making any difference in out lifetime....there is an entire industry built up just to argue about it

The huge pit of commerce that is "health care" does not fall under the Commerce Clause?
Dellinger says: “If you're going to drive, the states say you have to have liability insurance. And [the health care law] says if you're going to use health care, you need to have health care insurance. And since this is a product which everyone will use, or at least no one can be assured that they won't wind up at the hospital, in that sense it seems quite similar.”
"Duke University law professor Walter Dellinger, a former acting solicitor general who believes the health care law is constitutional, adds that the unpredictability of when or if a citizen will need health care makes the insurance market different than markets for other products."

It's a pretty good movie. I love a good western. When I was a kid there was a movie theater in the little town near us that showed only westerns (regular movie theaters were in the bigger town about 20 miles west of us)...anyway, this place was always full of ranchers and their families...had 100 seats (ten rows of ten)...all us kids would sit on the floor in front of the first row. That's where I saw "The Cowboys" and (while it wasn't technically a western, it got played there) "Westworld"...place was called "The Flick".

Well, Brit Hume also used that on tonight's O'Reilly Factor (Juan Williams was hosting). Hume was very sober in how he explained it, perhaps seeking to avoid the river of flame received by Chris Wallace, but he made the point that it was the kind of gaffe "that ordinary people make", but that would tell against Bachmann. Fox played this story right, a rarity for them.

The "clicks" counter was an outdated feature -- in the days of "spinoff links" this counter measured the number of clicks on outgoing links, i.e., links to external websites. Because of the way LGF Pages have evolved, this feature just isn't relevant any more.

A much more relevant number, if you want to see the popularity of your LGF Page, is the "Views" counter, which measures how many times your Page has been loaded by someone's browser.

Believe me, I understand. It's not a good thing when a news analyst with decades of experience has to qualify his point for longer than it takes to actually make his point, just because some idiots are being paranoid. Saying Michelle Bachmann goofed isn't making a statement about her character, its just saying she got a fact wrong. People need to grow up and not take any contradiction as a slight.

The point is, an LGF Page is supposed to be more than just a forwarding service to other websites. If I understand the idea correctly, the difference between a Page and a "Spinoff Link" is that the latter was really just that - a doorway to a story elsewhere.

That's not to say a Page ought to not have links to elsewhere or that linking to sources and others' postings are not important. But in all the Pages I've written what I'm concerned about, as far as feedback as an author, it whether people are reading what I've written. It's how I gauge whether the subject I picked has any interest or not. The up-dings are nice but as people have wildly different criteria for up/down dinging a post the dings can be confusing.

re: #173 freetoken

I upding any story/link/page that piques my interest, whether or not I agree with POV/politics or opinion.

If the story/link/page interest me enough, or there are comments I find interesting (whether or not I agree with the remarks) I'll leave a follow up comment.

Dark here's my thoughts...

Do you also feel Medicare is an overreach of the commerce clause?

Because Medicare as I understand it tries to insure EVERYONE (well all US citizens)_ once they reach a certain age.

Obamacare is only trying to make it easier for some people to get insured.

Do you accept or deny Medicare under the commerce clause and if your opinion is different why is it different.

Sorry to put you on the spot but this is kind of an important issue, though I promise I'll drop it after I hear your thoughts.

Phals like many plants' inflorescences can be used to funnel dye to the flowering bits. I've never been fond of it.

True blue is rare in flowers. Not possible in orchids (though some shades of violet in Orchids come very close).

I suspect this effort with Anthuriums is more to hone the process of how to do the gene manipulation with an eye to the bigger floriculture crops, like orchids and especially roses. There have been efforts to make blue roses for decades, but it is only now that it looks like it a more general process might be developed.

Khamenei and Ahmadinejad have been in leadership spat for quite some time (a prime example of this would the Ahmadinejad going on strike after he was ordered to reinstate his intelligence minister). By hyping the Iran's technical prowess Ahmadinejad can build a base of support that isn't dependent on the clerics.

If you read the Iranian PR about the silos they talk up how much of a technical accomplishment being able to build underground silos is. They compare it's difficulty to building the rockets themselves.

A similar phenomenon can be seen with the Iranian space program. They have a whole bunch of different satellites ready to be launched over the next year, and have declared that they will be launching as fast as they can prep the launch pad, where before many of their satellite launches were delayed, often by six months or more. Again the administration is talking up how the satellites were scratch designed by Iranian universities and defense contractors.

My reading of this is that this is propaganda designed for domestic consumption. The Iranian government is publicizing orbits, satellite resolutions and lifespans. All of this is data that would be classified if it had any military value. In addition they're talking up sending live animals into space, presumably to echo US and soviet accomplishments.

I know. The Iranians are acting like this is still the 1980's. Hardened silos are not the defense they once were, and haven't been since 1991. But since they still are acting like it's the 80's:

Good point. That sort of silo design os of the same age as the B-52 design, but without the B-52's extensive upgrades, and controlled by personnel far less skilled than B-52 crews.

There, there, spratling. Just smile, post nice comments, and don't fly off the handle. I got hammered when I first joined this board back in the day. Most of the people who engendered my wrath are no longer here, but still.

I was a an absolute dickhead, sometimes. Part of the problem was that I had never posted on another board (and still don't) and didn't really understand the protocol.

Good post. And they are only 50 years behind the technological curve.

Fear the Persian Empire!

It's all about nationalism, and securing their place as a regional power. Iran's most effective foreign policy weapons are IEDS to Iraq/Afghanistan and its support for Hamas/Hezbollah. The "high tech stuff" is mostly domestic. The Iranian military has a pretty good idea of what the US military is capable of, having had ringside seats for three of the last five major US deployments. Whether or not the political and religious leaders believe them is another story.

Every couple of years the "silo livers" put their silos up for sale. I guess living like a gopher isn't for everyone...but every time, the silos look a little more attractive and "hip"...but it's still a hole in the ground.

Well, unlike much what Iran brags about, they actually built those in numbers. Not that that would help, since those things against our Ospreys would be a replay in miniature of the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.

re: #270 BishopX

So it turns out Iran has been claiming to have built silos for the last fifteen years...the development is that they have remotely linked them to c3 centers some distance from the launch sites....This is all propaganda.

Source: PressTv

“The silos are a part of the swift reaction unit of the [IRGC] missile brigade; missiles are stored vertically, ready to be launched against pre-determined targets,” Fars News Agency quoted the IRGC spokesman in charge of the drills, General Asghar Qelich-Khani, as saying on Monday.

Qelich-Khani said the country has been using domestically-built missile silos for fifteen years and added that the newer generation silos are operational from a launch control center located far from the launch pads.

The main advantage of missile silos is the reduced launch time as the weapons need not be moved or aligned prior to launch.

On Sunday, Commander of the Aerospace Division of the IRGC Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh short-, medium- and long-range missiles, namely Khalij Fars (Persian Gulf), Sejjil (Baked Clay), Fateh (Conqueror), Qiam (Rising), Shahab-1 and Shahab-2 missiles would be fired during the war games.

They were indeed found. Your point about the I-400 is well made. The main thing wrong with them was their great size, which was a double-edged sword. They could travel far and carry aircraft, but they were slow to dive, which made them very vulnerable to ASW aircraft.

Gee whiz, just as I left the (Architects) office where I work, my profession gets slammed by my fellow lizards! What timing my lurking mode has...

Anyway, I can certainly say that the biggest rip off in Architecture is the low salaries that us Architects make. Combine the liability and required schooling of a Doctor with the salary of a garbage man (without union benefits), and you have what honest Architects bring home.

Dishonest Architects use unpaid interns, HB-1 visa holders, and unqualified draftspeople to bring their costs down. If my profession has a bad reputation, it's at least in part because society doesn't properly value (and pay for) our contributions.

CAD killed the Architects. Any twink with a computer can design a house. Too bad the foundations are totally inappropriate for the underlying soils, but by the time the house starts to break apart, the original designer is long gone.

Amateurs have no business acting as professionals, but that is the world we we live in. We don't want quality, we want *value*, even if it is false value. Your profession, especially in residential construction, is the poster child. I cannot tell you how many slab houses have been built in East Austin on a massive shrink/swell montmorillonite clay.

Not really. They were designing cookie cutter and poorly built houses well before the existence of CAD. CAD is just a tool. It neither makes the design or breaks the design. Someone that can't design a good house on CAD could not design a house manually. The design process typically begins in the mind and not on the computer. This was true during the days of pencil and vellum or pen and mylar.

Designers, architects, engineers, etc., will only design what is asked of them. If a developer wants a slab on grade home than that's what they'll work upon if they expect to put food on the table. Designers will also design within cost constraints and within the budget of the client. It doesn't do any good for a designer or architect to design a home their client cannot afford.

Living in the Chicago area can make you feel that way. You get to see some real architectural wonders and it makes you want a home with that sort of touch.

I've done work for a Denver builder that's been lauded by the local landmark people. They look like the old homes with modern touches. Starting price is about 1.4 million. Which is pretty low compared to what I see around here.

I know there's a lot of nice looking Craftsman style homes in Denver too. But that does come with a price. Like crumbling sandstone brick foundations. 2x4 sewn lumber roof framing that may collapse under a heavy snow load. Occasionally having to mitigate asbestos.

People do want more of an "old house" look but they don't want the old interior floor layouts. In general, people want large kitchens for example and well navigable hallways. Keep in mind too that lumber is very expensive if you want wood trim or real wood siding. Most people can't afford traditional material and have no choice but to opt with modern materials.

My cousins grew up in Park Ridge. Many happy memories of visiting them. My Uncle Bud and Aunt Helen ran a grocery store on Touhy just west of the NW rail line. They were one of the first folks in Chicago to hire Polish bakers and incorporate them into a grocery. The best baked goods in the world. Bud was a WWII vet, where he met Helen, my Da's sister, after he got a lung shot out fighting a tank for Patton, and always loved the Polish fighting spirit.

Thanks for sharing. Patton loved the Polish fighting spirit himself, although that had some negative effects after the war ended. Bavaria contained a number of camps for Polish POWs, and they were employed guarding camps for other Displaced Persons. Said Poles played a role in sending Russian POWs back to Stalin who threw them in the Gulag, though this bothered neither the Poles nor Patton (they all held Russian soldiers in very low regard). Many such Polish ex-POWs came to Chicago soon after, as it was clear they could not return to a Poland dominated by the Soviet Union. But Poland's forced loss was America's gain.

OK. I guess we've reached a point where we're going to debate roof design. I'm not talking about modern houses. I'm generally talking old homes before the onset of the UBC. This house I'm in now for instance has 2x4 roof framing over the garage. I'll assume it's the same on the house. It's sagging of course. Let's say I was wrong and they're really 2x6s in Denver. The fact remains that many roofs collapsed when we had our 24 inches of wet snow. That won't happen with a modern designed roof. Well, it should not happen if designed right but I don't live according to paranoia like that. ;)

Notice he is using a left-handed guitar strung for right-hand play (tuning machines pointing down, but fat strings still on top), a visual allusion to Hendrix (composer of Voodoo Chile-Slight Return). Jimi (a left-hander in an era with very few left handed guitars) played a right-handed guitar restrung to have the fat strings up when he played it in a left handed position, so the tuning machines point down.

Pretty clever.
