Michele Bachmann (R-Mars) Refuses to Admit She Was Wrong About Founding Fathers

Very weird behavior
Wingnuts • Views: 45,215

This is absolutely bizarre. Why won’t Michele Bachmann simply say she misspoke, when she claimed the founding fathers “worked tirelessly” to end slavery?

Instead Bachmann is doubling down on her false statement and refusing to admit she was wrong — and not only that, now she’s claiming that John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, was one of the founding fathers.

John Quincy Adams was eight years old when the Declaration of Independence was written.

UPDATE at 6/28/11 10:58:15 am

And now, someone has tried to edit the Wikipedia page for John Quincy Adams, to make him a founding father: John Quincy Adams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Bachmannized version:

‘John Quincy Adams”’ (; July 11, 1767ndash February 23, 1848), a founding father, was the sixth President of the United States (1825–1829).

The current revision:

John Quincy Adams”’ (; July 11, 1767ndash February 23, 1848) was the sixth President of the United States (1825–1829).

Because this way Republicans can pretend that the Founding Fathers were perfect godlike beings who didn't make any mistakes or errors of judgement, which is a pre-requisite for justifying the "originalism" that they like to use as a smokescreen for their pro-corporation, anti-government extremism.

Hey, when you talk to gd on a daily basis, everything coming out of your mouth has to be the infallible trooth, by default.

Michele Bachmann is one admission of imperfection away from a nervous breakdown, that's why. Her perfect-world image that she believes in is a gigantic fragile egg balanced on a 12 story house of cards. Anything can bring the whole thing crashing to the ground.

5 lawhawk  Tue, Jun 28, 2011 10:51:30am

She's entitled to her own reality...

No wait.

She's entitled to her own opinion, but not her own facts.

She's entitled to make a complete fool of herself on the national stage and her obstinacy about all of her misstatements is just mind boggling stupid as though no one would fact-check anything she says?

That she's going about and claiming things that are simply unsupportable by history shows just how unserious she is about the job she's seeking - and it goes to the lack of character and judgment.

6 Kragar  Tue, Jun 28, 2011 10:51:30am

It makes perfect sense once you take into account she is stupid.

This would have been a very easy gaffe to back away from: "Of course I misspoke. What I meant to say was that the Founding Fathers laid the groundwork for the abolition of slavery by abolishing the slave trade and by ensuring protection for such rights as free speech and due process."

Bachmann Fans Now Editing Wikipedia To Please Dear Leader

You knew it was going to happen at some point. Here are the edits some Bachmann fan attempted to add to Wikipedia in order to prove Bachmann’s false allegation that the then-child John Quincy Adams was a founding father. They were soon reverted with an admonition to “Please don’t edit an historical article based on current events.”

You know I'd love a Backmann primary win (for the lulz, and possibly a more mature realignment of the GOP) but at this rate I'd say she burns out in a month. Agreed?

Its really looking like it will be Romney at this point.

Easy enough: she doesn't have to. I think I'm paraphrasing the Taibbi Rolling Stone article; Bachmann's devotees share the same siege mentality. Any mistake that is pointed out is proof of people trying to attack her.

On a tangent, it's absolutely fascinating to watch the Baggers keep trying to paint all the Founding Fathers as Abolitionist. A good chunk of them own slaves. I can't wrap my head around the thought process it take to convince one's self that George Washington thought the best way to fight slavery was to own slaves.

It's like someone declaring they're for animal rights by hosting a pit bull fighting match in their basement every week.

OK, "concern trolling" is maybe not the exact phrase for the piece as a whole (though it applies to his "I don't see a path to election for the other candidates" at the end).

But it's dishonest. He's trying to build/support a particular narrative that paints Bachmann as a credible contender, because he wants her to win the primary. A disinterested observer would be unlikely to come up with the same story.

Her avoiding answering any actual questions is so obvious, how can anyone not see that she is making "pants on fire" statements? I guess if you are a religious nut, facts don't matter unless they conform to your beliefs.

I checked it this morning, and her followers hadn't figured out which JQA she was talking about (probably because they were still too busy turning John Wayne Gacy into a well loved movie star).

"Wait? What? John who Adams? The guy who sells beer in Boston? Shit! Stop talking Michele! We can only type so fast and these wikipedia pages are hard to find!"

30 elizajane  Tue, Jun 28, 2011 11:03:35am

I think that the press in general needs to stop harping on her minor historical errors and start looking at her major policy ideas.

Playing the "she's another dumb bimbo like Palin" could really backfire. Like calling her a flake -- it gets people riled up, and it looks sexist, and it could make Republican women really, really angry at the media. Why is the media doing this, when her actual genuine statements about politics are so toxic? She should be taken seriously, because to take her seriously would be to expose the worst of the worst on the Right. Misstatements about John Wayne are nothing that hasn't been equalled by Obama and Biden, really.

I've been as guilty of this as anybody, but I'm starting to dislike the culture of politics by mockery. The governmental issues at stake are way too serious.

Time travel is your friend.

I assume you mean July 11, 1767. That would make him 9 years old at the time of the Declaration of Independence and he was in Harvard until 1788. The Constitution was adopted September 1787 when JQA was 20. The Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791.

FWIW, John Adams who was among the signatories to the Declaration of Independence wasn't at the Constitutional Convention; he was ambassador to the British.

I think the word you're working for is "puff piece" because "concern trolling" is when you pretend that you're on someone's side but are only doing it to deconstruct your argument.

For example: "I support raising taxes on the rich, but I have some concerns about what the economy might be.... "

Any and all criticism will be labelled sexism. It's pure genius.

Kind of. Except these are the same people who spent an entire generation denying its existence, before some time in August 2008.

Lol next thing we know, Newsweek not airbrushing a cover photo now counts as "sexism" and "humiliating" for women.

What a joke.

It's one thing to be dumb. It's another to be deliberate ignorant. To me, every rwnj candidate except Romney and Huntsman ooze deliberate ignorance. I do think Bachmann is a true believer and Palin is mostly showbiz.

Must admit, I'm amused at all the rightwing sexism-chasers all of a sudden. Funny we never hear them screaming women they hate are "feminazis" anymore, now that Palin uses the term. /eyeroll

Fukn hypocrites.

Ahh Feminazis. Almost forgot that one!

Ludwig said yesterday that he thought Bachmann is more dangerous and thinking on that, he's right because she IS a true believer which is far scarier. And so are her fans. Inasmuch as they'll change the truth to conform with their new God(dess).

What kills me is all the BS that went around about Obama's degrees and how he was a moron regardless of his outstanding academic accomplishments. They convinced people of this. It's just shameful.

Well, it's still really early. I've watched the news reports about her in the past couple months with interest, though. For a while there, I was thinking the press was mopping Sarah Palin into a corner, where she'd have to run due to expectation levels, though she would not be ready.

That remains to be seen, but I do wonder this about Bachmann, too. Who knows. It's like a spectator sport, meh.

Mitt Romney’s Utah advisers are working to try to get the state’s Republican presidential primary moved up, from late June to earlier in the spring where it might play a bigger role in the nomination process.

Yaknow, I keep saying there are only two questions: how big is the Tea Party and can it unify. I'm wrong, there's a third question.

If they are large enough and can unify, can the chosen Tea Party candidate keep from self-destructing over the campaign season?

I find myself in a bit of a fantasy land, whereby the TP is large enough and unified enough to get their candidate past the threshold of victory, then watching the nominee display enough craziness that the convention's motto becomes "My god, what have we done?"

Hello everyone, Michele here...

...my great friend Sarah told me about this site and I wanted to come and say how much I support your support of me while I campaign in this momentous occasion to become the next President of the United States.

A lot of people have been commenting on my statement about the Founding Fathers, such as Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan, and I just would like to clarify that I actually am completely, one hundred percent, correct. You see, our great and wonderful country was made by those great men who gave us all a voice, and it's that voice which makes up America, which is the land of great voices from East to West and Up to Down, and because of that, those great men created the conditions for America to grow and prosper and represent the American Dream which is something which was obviously written about in our great Bill of Constitutional Rights.

Often, I come across people who ask me: Michele, when are you going to take back our voice, and so here I am, finally standing up for our country, the way that Joseph McCarthy stood up for it at the Battle of Gettysburg where he freed all those slaves and charged the machine gun nests with only a pistol to free our free speech and make us a better nation, under God. It's marvelous to see so many people coming out and supporting me because they know our history like I do and would want to see it back in our classrooms and in our hearts where it belongs.

I think that the time for pointing fingers belongs to us because we have seen Obama destroy our nation the way the Japanese did when they invaded our Pearl fisheries in the harbors and destroyed commercial fishing with their Communist ideals, and that was a very bad thing. But because we found our voice, our great founding fathers were able to defeat them and bring us back to glory. And it's important to remember, too, that George W. Bush was a Republican and led that charge even when he was just a boy because of his family history and his willingness to create jobs and help people to help themselves in the way that we always have.

I'm just so pleased that everyone is as excited as I am to tour this nation and create a new momentum in learning about our passionate history when all men were set free from slavery from the very start and where we can re-examine all our past and our laws to better serve the ideals of our foundation of this great country.

Thank you,

Michele Bachmann.

General: "As what? The world's greatest mass murderers?"

Bachmann: "You cowardly bastard!"

General: You're not the voice of the people!

Bachmann: "The people speak through me! It came to me while I slept--my destiny. I must get up now and fulfill my destiny! Put your god damn hand on that scanning screen, or I'll hack it off! Do it!"

General: May God forgive me. (He puts his hand on a fingerprint scan, authorizing a nuclear weapon launch).

Bachman: My destiny! (She pushes the button to launch a nuclear attack).

Speaking of airheaded women, Rick Santorum is getting some free press as well today (remember him? He's running for President!)

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

The Pines is the biggest for-profit residential treatment center in Virginia. During the past three years, it has also kicked up more abuse and neglect allegations than any other facility there, state records show, earning an unprecedented level of scrutiny from investigators with the state's licensing office and Office of Human Rights. The facility, which covers three campuses that span the tidewater region -- Brighton, Kempsville and Crawford -- has routinely faced state orders to correct itself, according to licensing records.

The Pines may be exceptional in terms of racking up state violations, but it also boasts a singular distinction: The board of the center's parent company, Universal Health Services, which bought The Pines in November, included former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.).

Bachmann is missing the basic realization that she's nutty. Even Ron Paul is aware that most people haven't heard his brand of nuttiness before. He's aware that he's a little eccentric. Glenn Beck will often preface statements with" I know this sounds crazy but....". It's like Bachmann has been living in some secluded libertarian bubble with no contact with reality. That's because there ARE NO OTHER talking points. In her world anyway.

Bachmann is missing the basic realization that she's nutty. Even Ron Paul is aware that most people haven't heard his brand of nuttiness before. He's aware that he's a little eccentric. Glenn Beck will often preface statements with" I know this sounds crazy but...". It's like Bachmann has been living in some secluded libertarian bubble with no contact with reality. I find it hard to believe she's unaware that people think she's a nut.

According to the Rolling Stone article she has been living in a secluded bubble. And it's not a libertarian bubble, it's a whacky right wing strange mixture of American Mythology and Religion bubble.

Yeah, that rigidity makes her brittle - moreso than the others imo.

Cain is in the same boat as Palin in that way. At least he has some personality. I can't think of anything else he has, but hey it's something. Yep. Remeber the interview with Chris Matthews last year -IIRC, it was the one where she called for the media to investigate which members of Congress were 'anti-American?'

Near the end of the interview, Tweety asked her 'Are you hypnotized?' more than once. Give her her talking points and she's unshakeable.

Some journalist, somewhere along the line, will succeed in dragging her off message. I only hope there are cameras rolling when it happens, because it'll be gold.

From this mornings Democracy Now!, a segment on our lady of the day:

"A Perfect Product of the Religious Right": Deconstructing Michele Bachmann’s GOP Presidential Bid

The rising star of the Tea Party movement, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann has launched her bid for the Republican 2012 presidential nomination. On the eve of her announcement, Bachmann was tied with Mitt Romney in the Des Moines Register’s Iowa poll, the first survey of voters who plan to attend the Republican caucuses. The former tax lawyer identifies as a conservative Christian and is a fierce opponent of abortion and gay marriage. Bachmann also supports teaching intelligent design in public schools, and she’s claimed that global warming is a hoax. She has largely built her campaign around accusing Obama of favoring government intervention, pushing the U.S. toward socialism, and having “anti-American views,” and is a particularly fierce critic of Obama’s healthcare overhaul. While Bachmann is known for advocating a limited government, she has recently come under scrutiny for allegedly accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in agricultural subsidies for her family farm in Wisconsin. We are joined by journalist Karl Bremer, who has covered Michele Bachmann’s political career for the last decade from Stillwater, Minnesota, which is where the Bachmanns currently reside. We also speak with journalist Michelle Goldberg, author of the book "Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism.”

A little telling isn't it. "I'm a serious person". How many pretty women have had to say that thru-out history. One shouldn't have to say it in 2011. Hillary or Condi certainly don't need to. Many, many other accomplished women wouldn't think of saying it.

Just as we're going to see these stories regularly over the next few months as Bachmann continues to get in front of cameras, we're going to continue to see the same retort from her supporters:

"Yeah, but 57 states!!!11!!cos(0)"

...as if Obama were actually either (a) misinformed, or (b) trying to mislead. With Bachmann, it's usually (a) or (b), coming down scarily in favor of (b).

Makes me want to register yeahbut57states.com.

Palin had this problem by going after every bad word said to her. After Wallace apologized, she should have graciously accepted it and moved on. Maybe even laugh it off.

OTOH, I think it does play well with woman voters which is a sad commentary for our gender. She should be playing the victor, not the victim.

* this vandalism (the "founding fathers" claim) by the IP 128.200.11.106 was reverted by the IP 209.6.46.162.
* This revert by the User Matt1978 (the one that's the last edit in the diff link in your update) actually adresses this vandalism by the IP 71.222.97.22 (which is a different one than the "founding fathers" claim)

That said, it's easy to see why Bachmann won't debate the 16-year-old about history.

Her avoiding answering any actual questions is so obvious, how can anyone not see that she is making "pants on fire" statements? I guess if you are a religious nut, facts don't matter unless they conform to your beliefs.

Actually, being criticized for those mistakes feeds into the "left wing librul media attack dogs" meme that the right wing has been building for 30 years. Any attack from outside her bubble merely strengthens her grip on her followers who tend to self indentify with her and Palin because of cultural resentment.

The idea of the Tea Party, IIRC, was originally inspired by the Boston Tea Party of history. A rant against unfair taxes. Which, I think, most citizens can find one or more reasons to sympathize.

Somehow, it got highjacked or morphed into a bat-shit crazy group of unorganized people with gripes about anything and everything.

That's the fantasy version of how the current tea party thing got going. Actually, Ron Paul started doing Tea Party rallies in 2007 or so, and the concept spread, with and without his help, into a libertarian movement disguised as a Republican movement, that still claims on occasion to have Democrats in it.

My husband says there is a group of professional protesters. They go from Furriers to Abortion Clinics to Nuclear Plants depending the time of year and the weather. Now, I think they are all working for the Tea Party.

And when it all comes crashing down they can go on the dole as unemployed "professional protesters". Maybe they need to unionize in order to get better benefits from their paymasters.

Actually, I think in the beginning, there were some individuals who were seriously into the Tea Bag thing because of Taxes.

That lasted about 3 seconds. Maybe I'm having selective memory, but they were always far right to me. I would argue that everyone wants a fair tax. Liberals aren't different from that, but liberals understand that people in poverty or who are struggling need welfare. They also completely forgot about welfare reform or were probably too stupid to even know about it. Before the recession and the money/time was increased to "entitlement programs" (I hate those words), 6 months was the average amount of time spent on welfare. Before Bush took office, many people were trained to do a skill and support themselves. The TBers are clueless.

re: #103 Summer

You, whoever you are, are a genius.

Eric Cantor's glaring conflict of interest

Last year the Wall Street Journal reported that Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House, had between $1,000 and $15,000 invested in ProShares Trust Ultrashort 20+ Year Treasury EFT. The fund aggressively "shorts" long-term U.S. Treasury bonds, meaning that it performs well when U.S. debt is undesirable. (A short is when the trader hopes to profit from the decline in the value of an asset.)

According to his latest financial disclosure statement, which covers the year 2010 and has been publicly available since this spring, Cantor still has up to $15,000 in the same fund.

Ah yes, don't you get it? A government that forces the civil rights of others upon us is tyrannical. People shouldn't have to go to the same grocery store as people who don't look like them or worship like them, or want to inter-marry with anyone not like them. Children should not be taught about sex or differing lifestyles. Any idea a parent doesn't want in their head should not be put there by public schools. Parents don't pay their tax money for education that goes against their beliefs or morals.

Obviously, you don't understand tyranny.

I have an old rotary phone from 1925. Still works. The handpiece is so heavy, it could be used as a lethal weapon. It also has a like a peak in it. Kinda comes to a point. The back of the handpiece is not flat so you can't cradle it on your shoulder. You HAVE to hold it.

Conversations couldn't have lasted more than a couple minutes. You'd have an arm like popeye.

is it not quaint that we still "dial" a number when nobody has used a phone with a dial on it for decades now?

With or without the poison gland and stinger? Or would you prefer the option attachment for dispensing drinks?

:)

stinger might be nice. But, I was thinking more as a "marital aid".

hehe I haven't used that phone for a long time. If I'm remembering, the mechanism inside was converted to tone dialing. You dial the rotary, "click click click".... "click click click" and then you hear "beep beep beep" as it tone dials. 30 minutes later, someone answers on the other end.

Oh, Louis CK forgot to mention if you got to the seventh number and misdialed. lol

"We" is not inherently either good or bad. The outcome of the revolution makes its short-to-mid-term morality. Then it falls to the historians.

Of course but, to stress my point, that type of phrase is one that fits all sizes and when used, like the Tea people do, means that one has already lost the ability to cooperate democratically.

It is reflected in Bachmann's statement that the sole purpose of the Republican party is to make sure President Obama is a one term president.

To hell with everything else.

re: #200 wrenchwench

That's the fantasy version of how the current tea party thing got going. Actually, Ron Paul started doing Tea Party rallies in 2007 or so, and the concept spread, with and without his help, into a libertarian movement disguised as a Republican movement, that still claims on occasion to have Democrats in it.

And in certain areas (mine, for instance), people associated with this crazy bunch were in control of local tea party events. So . . . yeah, there is a fantasy version of the tea party; and then there's what really happened.

What's really quaint is that very few folks use their phone for actual, you know, phone conversations any more.

It's used for e-mail, text, weather reports, news reports, calendar, traffic reports, address book, game playing, and on and on and on.

I talked on my phone today for the first time in at least a week. But I somehow manage to run the battery out every day.

I'm talking about a far-hypothetical SHTF situation, in which a new TP government might be the host of an unbearable tyranny. I have a bunch of 2nd Amendment buddies here in AL. They understand that in some highly unlikely future we would be in facing trenches.

That's the party of the candidate that former governor Gary Johnson voted for for president in 2008, enabling the party to gain ballot access in New Mexico.

We still have some commenters here who think Gary Johnson for President is a good idea.

I had to look Chuck Baldwin up.
From my 2 minute perusal, I'd say that while I disagree with him on several major issues, that he too appears to have some integrity. But he isn't really in the same vein as Johnson, who takes a cost-benfinit analysis/harm-reduction strategy to everything including social issues.

Chuck Baldwin is a fascist which makes Gary Johnson a fascist supporter. If Johnson had any integrity, why would he vote for someone who apparently cares not one whit for his ideals?

IMO the number of incidents which, all by themselves, legitimately disqualify a candidate is far smaller than the number of disqualification claims.

It doesn't matter if JQ Adams was 10 0r 20 at the founding, he didn't work "tirelessly" for the end of slavery until after 1820.

That said, and to be fair, the Adamses were anti-slavery people, and I hold that to their great credit.

Which isn't at all the point, but still worth saying.

Also, JQ, IIRC, had a pet alligator for a while during his presidency.
