Tom Petty Tells Michele Bachmann to Knock It Off

Petty isn’t pleased
Politics • Views: 47,327

Tom Petty is sending Michele Bachmann a cease-and-desist letter, to stop her from using his songs in her campaign.

Tom Petty may be taking legal action to make sure Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann stops using his songs at her campaign events.

“NBC News: @TomPetty unhappy with Michele Bachmann’s use of ‘American Girl’ and in process of issuing [a cease and desist] letter,” Matt Ortega reported on Twitter only hours after hours after Bachmann used the popular song to kick off her campaign.

NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell confirmed that report Monday night.

“And details matter, and when Bachmann left the stage here, her campaign played the Tom Petty hit song, ‘American Girl,’” O’Donnell said. “Turns out Petty isn’t pleased. His manager says they will ask the Bachmann campaign not to use that song.”

Petty also issued a cease and desist letter to then-Governor George W. Bush for illegally using “I won’t back down” at his rallies.

Fuck Tom Petty, his music sucks, and he's just ripping off The Beatles.

Saw Tom Petty when I was 18. My 2 step brothers were going and their car broke down. I gave them a ride, they bought me a scalped ticket. Row 11. They sat in the nose bleed seats. Heh.

bachmann needs to start smoking pot then take up new hobbies and maybe help out with greenpeace or something. it's not too late to fix her

There's a drastic shortage of conservative musicians. It's been a long running problem. Once conservatism appeals to people under 50 I suppose the problem will correct itself.

Newt's got a Tom Petty song too.

"Last chance for my campaign,
One more chance to let cash rain innn....
Just when support starts tricklin' in
Callista wants a vacationnnn..."

Nugent's been an asshole for decades. He ran away from the draft by making himself look mentally unstable. He only kisses the veterans' asses because he wants them to buy tickets to his show and he knows most people aren't aware of his military service evasion. He's a leach.

This doesn't surprise me. Musicians don't like it when politicians use their music without asking, and I can't imagine Petty being a raving wingnut like Bachmann.

Nothing of the sort. Bachmann seems to be basically everything that the GOP seemed to "love" about Palin: good-looking, chipper, and willing to belch out the far-right talking points without a sour look on her face. And, to round out the package, she comes without the baggage of being a half-governor or spending the past 2 years cashing in on her name.

Bocephus? He wouldn't give a shit. Charlie Daniels is pretty conservative though...he'd probably call for a cease and desist out of embarrassment.

I've been quoting country songs lately...and most of the people in my office don't catch the reference. I was telling a few people that I had a long way to go and a short time to get there, and only one said, "You should write a song about that"...then I got another manager based in Georgia to help me out and explained to my boss, "I was in a bind, cause I was way behind and I was looking for some workers to steal..." I thought that one was pretty good.

No Kansas abortion clinic has met the state’s new licensing rules, raising the prospect that by Friday, Kansas will be the only state where women cannot get an abortion.

On Tuesday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the clinics inspected so far hadn’t met the new standards approved by the Legislature earlier this year.

A lot of people have this hate thing going with John Wayne. Most of that comes from some of his comments during the Vietnam War. Ironically it sort of reminds me of the never ending hate on for Jane Fonda. There seems to be mythology of sorts that John Wayne is somehow a cause for modern wars because of his acting. Funny because as we all know it was LBJ that got us deep into the mud of Vietnam and not some actor. He authorized "Operation Rolling Thunder". JFK before him was also a believer in the Domino Theory not unlike the John Birch Society.

He was in some ways very ideologically "conservative" in today's parlance, at least from his acting days onward. Wayne was also active in the Republican party.

Obama may be losing the faith of Jewish Democrats
[Link: www.politico.com...]

David Ainsman really began to get worried about President Barack Obama’s standing with his fellow Jewish Democrats when a recent dinner with his wife and two other couples — all Obama voters in 2008 — nearly turned into a screaming match.

Ainsman, a prominent Democratic lawyer and Pittsburgh Jewish community leader, was trying to explain that Obama had just been offering Israel a bit of “tough love” in his May 19 speech on the Arab Spring. His friends disagreed — to say the least.

One said he had the sense that Obama “took the opportunity to throw Israel under the bus.” Another, who swore he wasn’t getting his information from the mutually despised Fox News, admitted he’d lost faith in the president.

If several dozen interviews with POLITICO are any indication, a similar conversation is taking place in Jewish communities across the country. Obama’s speech last month seems to have crystallized the doubts many pro-Israel Democrats had about Obama in 2008 in a way that could, on the margins, cost the president votes and money in 2012 and will not be easy to repair.

If he's not careful he may only get 80% of the Jewish vote instead of the 85% he got last time.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich showed up in Syria this week and held a press conference in which he appeared to praise embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - who is ruthlessly crushing opposition to his government - as “highly loved and appreciated by the Syrians.”

The Ohio Democrat released a statement on Tuesday saying that he had been misquoted by Syrian media.

Woman allegedly holds boyfriend hostage, tortures him over suspected infidelity

A Central California woman was behind bars Tuesday after allegedly holding her boyfriend hostage and torturing him because she believed he was cheating on her.

Deputies arrested Sabrina Renee Robinson, 33, on the morning of June 16 just outside Fresno as she hid in a bedroom inside a home that belongs to her boyfriend, whose name is being withheld by the Madera County Sheriff’s Department.

Moments before entering the home, deputies had found the boyfriend naked, beaten and hiding in bushes on the property.

Deputies have since pieced together what appears to be “a case of a woman scorned,” said Erica Stuart, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman. “Hell hath no fury.”

See, Indiana isn't all that bad:

Attorney General asks state Surpreme Court to review police powers ruling
[Link: www.courierpress.com...]

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller is pushing the state Supreme Court to reconsider a decision that would take away Hoosiers' rights to resist police officers who enter their homes illegally.

The case that was the basis for the high court's May ruling originated in Vanderburgh County, where Richard Barnes pushed back when a police officer attempted to enter his home after a domestic dispute.

The court ruled that in Indiana, citizens have no right to resist police officers. But Zoeller and others said the ruling was too broad. That's the case Zoeller's office pressed in its briefing, filed after hours Monday.

Zoeller's office is not saying Barnes' conviction should be overturned, although his attorneys have also asked for a rehearing and they do want the decision reversed and his conviction vacated.

"The court should simply hold that reasonable resistance does not include battery or other violent acts against law enforcement," the attorney general's office argued.

"Prohibiting nonviolent resistance to illegal police conduct is unnecessary to protect the public or law enforcement."

Here's the story about the threatened testicle tasering, the officer used a variation of the twinkie defense:

Toronto cop threatened handcuffed man with Taser because of diabetes: judge
[Link: www.globaltoronto.com...]

Video shot from the back seat of a police cruiser and entered as court evidence shows the officer holding a Taser to a man's crotch and threatening to shock him during an incident in west Toronto on May 24, 2010.

The 38-year-old officer is a Type 1 diabetic who, in pleading guilty to one count of threatening bodily harm in February 2011, said he was suffering from low bloodsugar at the time of the incident partly because he didn't eat lunch that day.

Detroit will just put you in the hospital.

I work with a guy who just recently moved here from Detroit. After walking out his door and finding his car on blocs and his tires missing, coming back from jogging to discover his house broken in and family jewelry stolen, and the almost daily shootings in his neighborhood, he moved the family to Charlottesville.

I welcomed him here.

Taliban attack on eve of security conference leaves 21 dead

The death toll from the night-time insurgent assault on a landmark Kabul hotel rose to 21 this morning, including the nine heavily-armed attackers who fought Afghan and NATO commandos for four hours as explosions rocked the blacked-out city center.

The siege ended when a NATO helicopter swooped in low over the hotel and fired on several of the attackers who had climbed to roof and were lobbing grenades into the darkness and firing at security forces.

...A Taliban spokesman took responsibility for the attack, saying the group aimed to murder government officials and foreigners it believed were inside.

I wonder how those US talks with the Taliban are coming along?

NYPD Maintains Heightened Security Following Hotel Attack In Afghanistan

The New York Police Department is stepping up counter-terrorism measures at hotels in the wake of a terrorist attack in Afghanistan.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said the move wasn’t prompted by a specific threat in the city, but the nation’s biggest police department is taking no chances as it learns more about the attack on Kabul’s Inter-Continental Hotel, which is frequented by foreigners.

Afghan police said a Taliban attack at an international hotel in Kabul has ended with 19 people dead, eight attackers and 11 civilians.

Who Is Behind the Second Gaza Flotilla?

The second flotilla is coordinated by Muhammad Sawalha, a senior Hamas activist. Many of the participating organizations can be directly linked with the Union of Good (UoG), a coalition of European charities affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which in 2008 was designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. Treasury, for transferring funds to Hamas. The UoG was initiated by Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi, leader of the Muslim Brotherhood on a global scale, shortly after the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000.

Other main organizers include the anti-Israel International Solidarity Movement (ISM), as well as far-left socialists from Europe and the United States. According to the flotilla's main organizers, its prime aim is to create provocations and harm Israel's image.

Following Israel's Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, which ended in January 2009, a series of international conferences was held in Turkey to restructure the struggle against Israel. A conference in February 2009 featured 200 radical Islamist scholars who came to meet with senior Hamas officials to plot a new, "third jihadi front" (in addition to Pakistan and Iraq) centered on Gaza. The conference gave birth to the infamous, pro-Hamas Istanbul Declaration, which also provided justification for attacking foreign navies which might try to prevent arms smuggling to Gaza.

In general, the same organizers stand behind the second flotilla, with several changes. The most important may be the IHH decision not to send the Mavi Marmara, the ship which bought the first flotilla its publicity following violent clashes between IHH activists and the IDF, in which nine Turks were killed. Rather than take a leading role, it appears that the IHH will settle this time for sending activists to sail on other ships.

Thus, the flotilla is far from being a peaceful, humanitarian effort to support the Palestinians in Gaza. It should instead be seen as a major, pro-Hamas effort to delegitimize Israel by a "red-green alliance" of leftists and Islamists.

The Second "Freedom Flotilla" is a joint and coordinated effort of several groups working to delegitimize Israel on a global scale. The claim of the organizers that they are seeking to relieve the siege of Gaza and to provide urgently needed humanitarian aid rings completely hollow, given the vast economic improvements the territory has been witnessing. Indeed, the New York Times reported on June 25, 2011, that "two luxury hotels are opening in Gaza this month." The report from Gaza continues with a description of a "second shopping mall" about to open and "hundreds of homes" under construction.1 The motivation behind the flotilla is thus clearly political. All the groups involved have separately sent ships and land convoys aimed to "break the siege" of Gaza in order to hurt Israel's image.

The latest campaign is coordinated by Muhammad Sawalha, who, according to Israeli sources, is a senior Hamas activist who helped establish its operational infrastructure in the West Bank in the late 1980s. He found asylum in Britain in 1990 and is one of the central leaders of Islamist, anti-Israel, and pro-Hamas activities in Britain. Many of the participating organizations can be directly linked with the Union of Good (UoG), a coalition of European charities affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which in 2008 was designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. Treasury for transferring funds to Hamas. Other main organizers include the anti-Israel International Solidarity Movement (ISM), as well as far-left socialists from Europe and the United States. According to the flotilla's main organizers, its prime aim is to create provocations and harm Israel's image.

Time to nail Massy Energy to the wall.

Officials: W. Va. Mine Operator Kept Two Sets Of Safety Records

Federal mine disaster investigators disclosed a few pieces of new information Tuesday night from their year-long look at the April 2010 deadly Upper Big Branch mine explosion. They said that:

— Mine owner Massey Energy kept two sets of records that chronicled safety problems. One internal set of production reports detailed those problems and how they delayed coal production. But the other records, which are reviewed by federal mine safety inspectors and required by federal law, failed to mention the same safety hazards. Some of the hazards that were not disclosed are identical to those believed to have contributed to the explosion.

Israel sent a message to Syrian President Bashar Assad in recent days, warning him that if he started a war with the Jewish state in order to divert attention from domestic problems, Israel will target him personally, Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, the personal warning was sent through Turkey following intelligence reports of unusual Syrian troop movements, including the moving of long-range ballistic missiles that could be used to target Israel.

The report added that the IDF has increased its preparedness on the northern border out of fear that Hezbollah may attempt to stage another kidnapping of soldiers or civilians along the Lebanese border.

Dutch legislators infringe on religious beliefs by passing a ban on religious slaughter of animals.

The move would require that animals be first stunned before they are slaughtered; this would go against both Jewish and Muslim slaughtering procedures that require the animal to be fully aware at the time they are slaughtered.

It's claimed that this is an animal rights issue, but it really goes to religious freedom - particularly since the stunning of animals is itself a distressing and cruel procedure to maximize animal slaughter at the lowest possible cost.

What's particularly gruesome about the slaughtering procedures? Under Jewish law, the animal must be checked for disease before it is slaughtered - and the person doing the slaughtering must do so with one clean stroke of a knife to sever key arteries, veins, and other internal structures of the neck; failing to do so renders the animal unkosher. Following that procedure, the animal is again checked for disease that would render it unkosher.

To me, that's far more humane than a system where the animal is stunned by gas, gun, or electrocution before it is slaughtered.

Greek Wealth Is Everywhere but Tax Forms

Various studies, including one by the Federation of Greek Industries last year, have estimated that the government may be losing as much as $30 billion a year to tax evasion — a figure that would have gone a long way to solving its debt problems.

“We need to grow up,” said Ioannis Plakopoulos, who like all owners of newspaper stands will have to give receipts and start using a cash register under the new tax laws passed last month. “We need to learn not to cheat or to let others cheat.”

Why is "stunning" considered more humane than instantaneous severing of the carotid artery? "Stunning" requires shocking the animal with a big taser. Sometimes several shocks are required before the animal loses consciousness. What makes that more "humane" or is it just less messy?

A man goes into a restaurant. He sits down and asks the waiter, "So, how do you prepare the chicken"? Waiter says, "We don't. They pretty much know they're gonna die". (old, old, repost)

There's a difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion. The former is a legal way to do so using all available tax credits, exemptions, deductions to the maximum permitted by law. Evasion is the failure to report/pay tax due.

Many countries have problems with both - and the more complex the tax code, the more revenues are lost to evasion or avoidance - even if it's accidental because no one can quite figure out the proper tax due.

It's a distinction with a real legal and criminal difference.

Avoidance is permissible. Taxpayers do it all the time with taking advantage of tax credits or shifting assets to minimize tax. For example, if you take advantage of the mortgage deduction, it's a tax avoidance measure -but wholly legal.

Evasion is punishable by civil and criminal sanctions, including significant jail time. Just ask Wesley Snipes.

Looking for a treat, and peeing where they stand. Anticipation of news takes far more of our time than the actual news event itself. Then there's the post-news analysis..."Was it good for you?" The idiots on TV were talking about Bachmann and Palin and the host asked, "Is Sarah Palin getting jealous of the attention Bachmann's getting?" The Republican explained that she just announced so she's getting lots of attention as she should. Surprisingly, the hostess said, "Huntsman just announced too...but he's not getting any attention." [Pregnant pause] Conversation swung back to Palin.

Don't get me started. I probably have some of the most extreme views on the Hermit Kingdom in anyone you've probably ever met. Most people pale when they hear what I wish I could do as my life long work, but I think it's because they haven't really thought things through about how bad things are there. It's one area of politics where my response becomes savage brutality, and I make no apologies for it.

In other news: I'm very happy that Bachmann is in because I think that the Republican Party needs somebody who can best represent the makeup of the party's current ideology at the moment. Romney is far too educated, polished, well spoken, experienced, and even thoughtful (and I still wouldn't vote for him) to truly represent what the GOP has recently become, so I'm all for Bachmann giving it a go and showing the world exactly what they're all about right now.

Hey, I can make farming vegetables sound pretty gruesome too.

Watch:

First, we thrust the seed into the ground and smother it with soil. Then, we nearly drown that seed in water until it starts to poke its head over the soil. Next, we dose it with toxic chemicals to make sure that pests don't eat them and that they grow even faster than naturally possible. We further dump harsh chemicals on the soil to make sure that the seed germinates and grows fast.

Then, when the plant has grown enough, the farm comes in and chops the plant off at the root, grabs and crushes the plant, to get at the fruit/vegetable, throws them into baskets and moves them to rooms that are cold and full of CO2 to preserve them for shipment.

RE: North Korea

Don't get me started. I probably have some of the most extreme views on the Hermit Kingdom in anyone you've probably ever met. Most people pale when they hear what I wish I could do as my life long work, but I think it's because they haven't really thought things through about how bad things are there. It's one area of politics where my response becomes savage brutality, and I make no apologies for it.

I personally think North Korea is the saddest place on earth, no two ways about it.

I wouldn't put it past China to one day invade for a land grab should the inevitable power vacuum appear.

Or just find a nice recording of "John Barleycorn Must Die". I'm fond of the version by Traffic.

Speaking of Chase, got a package in the mail from them suggesting that I refinance with them at no-cost, and that it would be essentially a paperless refi. .5 better than my existing rate. I could either reduce the term of years, or take the rate reduction, but if I take the better rate and then use the difference between the rates to pay down principal, I reduce the term to 24 years. Seems like a no-brainer since I've got all the paperwork and terms.

Democrats want to close tax loopholes that benefit oil companies, and eliminate a tax preference that gives corporate aircraft a friendlier depreciation schedule than commercial aircraft. Additionally, Van Hollen said, Democrats were proposing to phase out tax deductions and certain credits for people making more than $500,000 a year. These would be paired with a reduction in the tax burden on lower earners, by eliminating existing limitations on their deductions.

FBI Raids Iowa Woman’s Home in Lulz Security Hacker Investigation

The hacking group Lulz Security ended its 50-day reign of terror this weekend, but law enforcement’s hunt for its members will go on. Last week, FBI agents raided an Iowa woman’s home because of her connections to the group.

At about 11 am last Thursday, 29-year-old Laurelai Bailey heard a knock at her Davenport, Iowa home. She found around eight FBI agents swarming at her doorstep, search warrant in hand. But the agents politely “told me they weren’t there to arrest me,” Bailey tells us in an interview.

Instead, they had some questions about hackers Bailey had been hanging out with online. They told Bailey they were investigating a February attack against the security firm HBGary by an elite group of hackers associated with the hacktivist collective Anonymous. Those hackers would later break away from Anonymous to form Lulz Security, who attacked the FBI, PBS, and the CIA in a well-publicized spree before calling it quits this weekend amid increasing pressure and the arrest of a purported member in England.

Meanwhile...

'Anonymous' hackers declare war on Orlando

The hacker group Anonymous on Monday declared war against the city of Orlando, Florida, over the arrest of people handing out food to homeless people, according to a report in The Washington Post.

In a press release, the group announced the creation of "Operation Orlando" over the city's treatment of the Food Not Bombs group.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that what started as a spat over distributing food without a permit in a park had escalated, with Mayor Buddy Dyer describing the activists charged with the misdemeanor offense as "food terrorists."

No, I'm sorry, this is not true. I'm a married man living in NYC, in one of the most expensive parts of it. My wife and I combined make about 100K a year. We live very nicely in New York on that amount. If we had two kids-- and the attendant tax credits-- and another 150K a year, we'd be living even better. There are deductions, you know, for having kids. If you run the income calculator assuming just 10,000 in child related expenses and take deductions for the 2 kids, with no other deductions, you're keeping 160,000K. That puts you in the top 3% of Americans. If that's upper middle class, then you're proving my point-- the income disparity in this country is totally out of hand. Even if you hire a full-time nanny and pay $3000 a month for an apartment, you have $84,000 a year left over after that. That's still more than double the median income in NYC.

250K is a big amount, no matter where you are. Not to mention that living in Manhattan is a huge privilege and it's something that you're paying for for that cost of living. Likewise in San Francisco. It's not just a cost. You get something for that.

Okay BUT that's twice what we have seen proposed as the lower limit for an increase. Parse the tax chart anyway we want, but it's not easy to square up the rhetoric of "millionaires and billionaires" with incomes far, below that and upside down $ value homes.

And I must say I really object to the foolish and obstructionist focus on the "Bush Tax Cuts". How about unburdening the tax revenues discussion of that entirely and starting to look at the tax code from an actuarial perspective rather than a "gotcha" partisan motive. (and yeah i want a pony too) :-)>

From Forbes
Higher income tax rates. The administration proposed allowing the Bush tax cuts for the top two brackets to expire at the end of 2010, just as I--and many others--had predicted it would. That means the top two rates on ordinary income go back up in 2011 to 36% and 39.6%, from 33% and 35% now. (One particular is a little ugly however: the mother of all marriage penalties. The higher rates kick in at $200,000 for a single individual and $250,000 for a married couple filing jointly.)

But even so, I appreciate the value of living in Manhattan. I'm three blocks from the 92nd street Y now, which is just freaking awesome.

Has anyone tallied up the numbers of ex millionaires? That might be pretty illustrative of the current state of the "rich".

Why on earth would that be illustrative?

I'm almost prepared for the long July 4th weekend. I have to go out and buy some fish for the grill and then I'll be all stocked up. I really try to avoid being on the road when all the amateur drunks are out.

Yeah ,, they should get off the road and let us PROFESSIONAL drunks have at it!

Adm. McRaven: Obama administration has no plan for captured terrorists

The top military official involved in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden said Tuesday that the Obama administration has no clear plan for handling suspected terrorist leaders if they are caught alive outside a war zone.

Vice Adm. William H. McRaven told a Senate panel that contingency plans for detaining terrorism suspects are developed on an ad hoc basis and approved by the White House, but that there are no set rules. “That is always a difficult issue for us,” he testified. “No two cases seem to be alike.”

In response to senators’ questions, McRaven said that “in many cases” suspects captured in secret operations by Navy SEALs or the Army’s Delta Force are taken to a U.S. Navy ship until they can be tried in a U.S. court or transferred to the custody of an allied country. But if neither option turns out to be feasible, the prisoner is ultimately let go, he said.

“If we can’t do either one of those, then we will release that individual,” McRaven said in response to a question from Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.). “I mean, that becomes the unenviable option, but it is an option.”

Captured terrorists are just let go? Really?!?!?!

I can not answer that well until I have the number, and so far my Google has not helped. Workin' on it. But in the abstract (and maybe out on a limb)-Seeing how many families lost that millionaire status should be helpful in considering some of the fine print in the new tax numbers.

If someone is making $250,000 a year and isn't a millionaire (net worth), that someone is doing it wrong.

Well, income and wealth are related but not the same. Someone with a 250K income may well be a millionaire, or they might not be.

If those families lose 6-9% of their income over 200,000 it will marginally affect their ability to accumulate wealth. If a Habitat homeowner loses 6%, if affects his ability to accumulate food.

re: #634 Rightwingconspirator

I'm still not getting it. Why is it interesting to look at the number of ex-millionaires? Do you just mean people who, on paper, were millionaires during the housing bubble and are no longer? What does that have to do with income tax?

642 Daniel Ballard  Wed, Jun 29, 2011 9:46:06am

re: #635 allegro

You are assuming a number of years at that income. With all due respect to corporate CEO wages, lots of folks no longer make the big dollars. Or the income is erratic, as say maybe real estate commissions can vary one year to another.

MEANING,, in the end, you'll be at the same "rate" (percentage wise) but in real dollars will pay more due to less deductions

I just don't get what you think it'll even mean.

What I'm saying:

The wealth disparity in this country has increased wildly over the past few decades. It shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Both in terms of wealth held, and income earned, the gaps are growing. This si a problem. It is not showing any signs of going away or being ameliorated.

I am not arguing any particular solution to this problem, though I do personally feel I could shoulder quite a bit higher a tax burden and do just fine. I think most others making the level of income I am or above me could, as well-- certainly they could do so better than single mothers can afford to lose out on the food programs that we've been cutting recently.

However, my main point is: This wealth disparity exists, and it's getting worse. This is a factual observation.

WTF?

Rep. Kucinich's Syria visit raises eyebrows

Rep. Dennis Kucinich showed up in Syria this week and held a press conference in which he appeared to praise embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad — who is ruthlessly crushing opposition to his government — as “highly loved and appreciated by the Syrians.”

But the Ohio Democrat released a statement Tuesday saying he was misquoted by Syrian media.

...Syrian state media quoted Kucinich as saying during the press conference, “President Bashar al-Assad cares so much about what is taking place in Syria, which is evident in his effort towards a new Syria and everybody who meets him can be certain of this.”

...“A story written about my remarks by the Syrian Arab News Agency unfortunately mistranslated several of my statements and did not reflect my direct quotes. Arab-speaking friends accompanying me have explained that the problem may have come from a mistranslation as well as the degree of appreciation and affection their state-sponsored media has for President Assad,” Kucinich said in the statement.

However, the Ohio Congressman did not rush to blame Syrian state-run media, saying in the same statement that the mistranslations were “unfortunate [but] … not a willful intent to mischaracterize my statements or my efforts in the region.”

Your point might make sense if I'd either said that you could raise a kid on 5K a year (which, obviously, you can, given how many people at income levels around 20K a year manage to pull it off) or that having kids didn't cost more money than it was worse in tax benefits.

re: #658 sattv4u2

I'm glad you acknowledge the need for assistance for the poor; however, that amount varies from state to state-- in california, it's only 130% of the poverty line. So if you made $25,000 a year, and had a kid, you'd be ineligible.

Kids cost money to raise; that's a cost that people making 250K a year can shoulder a hell of a lot easier than those make 25K a year.

Kind of obvious.

663 BongCrodny  Wed, Jun 29, 2011 12:42:29pm

The USDA reports that it costs around $225,000 to raise a child if born in 2010.

That's roughly $13,000 a year through age 18.

If you're earning $250,000 per year, that's about two weeks' take-home pay.
