It was Willis O'Brien rather than Harryhausen who did the stop action work for King Kong (Harryhausen was still a child in 1933). O'brien pioneered the technique, starting in the early 1900s. King Kong was his masterpiece, but he should also be remembered for the breathtaking effects in the original silent version of Lost World. Harryhausen was O'Brien's protege and successor in the 1940s, especially on Mighty Joe Young.

Indeed. He did have the advantage of a long, straight runway, though. The Air Kenya crew was trying to bring their 767 parallel to the beach when the left wingtip dug in and snap-rolled the plane. Given that they glided for thirty miles without engines, they did as good a job, with as good an outcome, as could reasonably be expected in a hijack situation. Many lived. Sadly, the aircrew didn't.

Apparently a remake of Blade Runner is underway. Blade Runner.
I don't understand why Hollywood studios are so terrified of taking chances with new ideas. Worst case scenario: it flops, nobody sees it, and nobody cares. Best case scenario: it becomes a huge hit by an unknown director featuring a mostly unknown cast. In other words, another milestone.
If you haven't seen it, check out a movie called "Monsters" - especially if you're a sci-fi fan. It's a really good film, and it was made for less than $500,000 - which would barely cover the catering for a typical Hollywood film.
The film was devised, storyboarded and directed by Gareth Edwards, who also worked as the visual effects artist.[5] Allan Niblo and James Richardson of Vertigo Films work as producers on the production.[6] The filming equipment cost approximately $15,000, with the budget coming in at under $500,000.[7] The film was able to be made on such a low budget due to the use of prosumer cameras to capture digital video rather than the more expensive 35mm film.[8] Any settings featured in the film were real locations often used without permission asked in advance, and the extras were just people who happened to be there at the time.[8]
A studio could put out THREE HUNDRED similarly ambitious $500,000 films for the price of one Mars Needs Moms (world-wide profit loss: -$130,231,843). I mean, it's almost like we could have something resembling a culture that wasn't completely embarrassing.
Instead, they'd rather fart out another remake of the reboot of a remake, spend all the money on big-name actors, egomaniac directors, and ridiculous SFX; apparently leaving the scriptwriting up to the executive producer's 13 year old nephew. Everybody mocks it whether they've see it or not, and everyone involved looks like a putz forever.

There's also the idea that The West has persecuted and taken advantage of the Arab states in different ways-- never mind that, to the extent that's true, it was mostly the British. The US has meddled too, but nowhere near enough to deserve a lethal level of ire.
Mostly, it's the extremist variations of Islam. Not just Salafism, but that's the main problematic one.

The "colonial" excuse will be with us for generations to come, just as the slavery one will be in the USA, regardless of a Black president.
But the operative word is excuse.
In the case of Pakistan one should remember that for the most part they are the same people as those in India except for the religion they were born into (I doubt there are many born again Muslims in Pakistan) and they have the same colonial history, which borders they chose to change willingly and freely.
So we are left with religion and, I hasten to add, not only against the West.

Er, the division of India and Pakistan wasn't exactly a free and untroubled event. The British bear quite a lot of responsibility there, as well. If you haven't read "Midnight's Children", it's a good fiction treatment of it. For non-fiction, both Freedom at Midnight and French's Liberty or Death are great treatments of it-- the second being critical of the first.
There really is anti-Western sentiment that does not come from religious roots in Pakistan and in the rest of the Arab world. It is nowhere near, as I said, the main force, but there is no reason to overlook it; indeed, it's dangerous to do so.
That the religious extremism of Salafism is not only against the west is very true-- just ask anyone trying to reform Pakistan, if they haven't been assassinated yet.

The Soviet Union, when they could pretend it was a union, had a different interest in Afghanistan than the US. They had a common border and they had a territorial expansionist opportunity, or so they thought, as they were prone to do.
The US has had interests but never territorial expansion ones, or the constitution of the US would now apply from Japan to Germany.
What we do however have is a misguided naivety that everyone wants to be just like us (and could be) if we kill the bad guys who prevent them from doing so; when what we should just do is kill the bad guys who threaten us, from time to time.

Civil war breaks out in Texas, pitting the majority Tea Party secessionists ("The Liptoneers") led by General Rick Perry against the Shitty Texas Weather Underground of Austin, who are aided by the shadowy Fort Worth Creative Consortium. Nobody is safe. Your neighbor might be an assassin, or someone paid to pick targets for assassins, or an uninvolved innocent person, or even one of your own. Just as in Rwanda, talk radio hosts begin openly beseeching their listeners to slaughter their political opponents. And it gets worse. People you can't keep track of go off and do all sorts of crazy shit. Possibly even in countries other than your own.
But lo and behold, into the midst of all this steps President Jin Sun Choi leading an army hundreds of thousands strong. They don't speak your language, and they have only the most superficial understanding of you, your history, and the nuances of your daily life. In fact, an awful lot of them get really belligerent at the very idea of "nuances". It's a dirty word to them. You can see that their perception of you is derived primarily from their own proudly ignorant TV shows and movies. You barely register as human.
They have interjected themselves into your reality without your invitation or consent. They have taken control of your town and are now dictating how you are going to live, OR ELSE. They perceive any resistance to their efforts as evidence that the person doing the resisting is the enemy worthy of no less than torture and death, and it does not escape your notice that a large portion of their people back home agree with this idea. They arrest, torture, and indefinitely imprison your mom, dad, brother, sister, uncle. They threaten that you're next unless you tell them exactly what they want to hear.
Meanwhile, they insist that they have made you free, and seem genuinely unable to figure out why these magnanimous efforts still result in people being pissed off at them. Nothing can convince them that they are anything other than The Good Guys.
Use your imagination and put yourself in those shoes.
Why *wouldn't* you hate them?

Man, I remember having nightmares as a kid of those damn Cyclops chasing me through the streets of my home town. They didn't bother me while I watched the movie but to hear their howls in a dream was terrifying. They were replaced by the T-Rex from Jurassic park until somehow I got hold of a elephant gun with these crazy looking cartridges that looked like something that would be fired out of a tank but miniaturized and killed the damn thing. Strange how these movies can have an effect unknown effect until someone wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.

Actually, I was thinking of the 20th century, from the Spanish-American war and its fallout, to the accession of Alaska.
History is relevant.
The problems today in Pakistan are definitely a product of (among other things) the 20th century and its numerous wars. The US wasn't directly involved in the creation or propagation of the radical islamic fire in the region, at least until arming the mujahideen and their fight against the Soviets. However, western attempts to stir up the region (in the 20th century) started IIRC with WWI.

I will try to read as suggested, but I maintain that where you think I meant something like "a free democratic choice", I did not.
I meant a cultural/religious choice at a broader level. They were convinced that they could not live together with those of different religions and while they were no doubt manipulated by political power players, the fundamental differences were paramount. One could draw a kind of analogy with the current state of politics in the US, where a so called Tea Party has taken over what was once a reasonably sensible group of free enterprise proponents and has now become a bunch of religious fanatics afraid to argue anything among themselves.

Those differences were used, stoked, exploited, nurtured, and encouraged by the British during colonization, though. You can't just ignore this.
You're basically saying the people, as a whole, made the choice of partition. That is absolutely ridiculous. Agitators on both sides whipped up partisan frenzy, and the final choice of division-- both in how it was to happen, and the territory it was to encompass-- was by the British.
Please, please read something on the subject. It is an incredibly complex topic.
Saying it was a religious or cultural choice at a broader level is either an obvious observation-- the division was along religious lines-- or meaningless. It was certainly not a free choice.

Authorities say the body of a woman who died in a Massachusetts public pool went undetected for days as swimmers continued to use the pool before the victim was found floating.
The body of Marie Joseph, 36, was discovered by teenagers Tuesday evening in the Vietnam Veterans Swimming Pool in Fall River, Massachusetts, according to Bristol County district attorney's spokesman Gregg Miliote.
Joseph had gone to the pool on Sunday with a 9-year-old neighbor and his family. She collided with the boy while the pair careened down a pool slide, Miliote said.
After the collision, the boy surfaced but the woman did not, he said.
It was not clear Thursday what happened after the collision or whether the boy and his family sought Joseph's whereabouts when they left the pool.
Authorities continued to investigate the cause of death Thursday.
The pool -- which is 12 feet deep at its deepest --- was described as "cloudy" by a health inspector who examined the pool Tuesday, according to the mayor of Fall River, William Flanagan.
A decomposing body can take a couple of days before it becomes buoyant, Miliote added.

I just watched some NatGeo channel drek - sensationalism. I wonder to myself how the National Geographic Society to have sunk to such lows as airing some of the stuff that appears on NatGeo.
So I decided to check up on NatGeo, since I've never done that before... and discovered why it does what it does.
Turns out it is part owned by... Fox.

He knows sex sells, and he knows mystery/conspiracy/sensationalism is the key to making money in the media business. His billions of dollars are a testament to it.

BTW, the producer of this NatGeo piece of drivel I viewed is non other that Simcha Jacobovici... who was the guy who did the show on supposedly having found two of the nails used in Jesus' crucifixion (the show was criticized harshly by those who know, well, anything, e.g.: A Critique of Simcha Jacobovici’s Secrets of Christianity: Nails of the Cross).
Bottom line, anything made by Simcha Jacobovici ought to be taken with at least as many grains of salt as one would take with Art Bell's old show.

According to the two officials, the woman had a phone conversation with an incarcerated man within a day of her encounter with Mr. Strauss-Kahn in which she discussed the possible benefits of pursuing the charges against him. The conversation was recorded.
That man, the investigators learned, had been arrested on charges of possessing 400 pounds of marijuana. He is among a number of individuals who made multiple cash deposits, totaling around $100,000, into the woman’s bank account over the last two years. The deposits were made in Arizona, Georgia, New York and Pennsylvania.
The investigators also learned that she was paying hundreds of dollars every month in phone charges to five companies. The woman had insisted she had only one phone and said she knew nothing about the deposits except that they were made by a man she described as her fiancé and his friends.

If just trying to gain personal information for identity theft, a person easily runs across more car tags then credit cards. And the chip could make obtaining info quicker then having to get a tag number and do the research. But I'm running into AJ territory here.:)

If there were a way to ensure that only the police could access the info I wouldn't be all that concerned, although I probably should be, but giving people a way to track your movements and access to all the info the BMV keeps on you isn't a good idea.

Whoa stop. RFID does not automatically go to full access of the BMV/DMV.
You need the data from the plate, maybe what's in the registration (which might be there, but given how people move I'm going to suspect that's a non-starter). You also need an access code to the DMV databases and that is not going to be on the plates.

Drug task force agents see a car zoom past on Interstate 65 South in Robertson County — prime conditions for the kind of pretextual traffic stop that could lead to a drug search. Indeed, a search of the late-model Ford sedan reveals that the two Hispanic men from Dayton, Ohio, are drug mules who've been paid a pittance to risk transporting a half-kilo of heroin down a known drug corridor.

Instead, Lt. Shane Daugherty, a team supervisor with the 17th Judicial Drug Task Force and perhaps one of the most high-profile narcos in the state, now finds his own credibility in question. Meanwhile, the Ruizes are all but ready to walk out of jail as free men. With one ruling, federal district Judge Aleta Trauger rendered the evidence Daugherty discovered off limits and the prosecution's case against the cousins virtually unwinnable.

He testified in court that the radar was on and that it clocked the sedan doing 79 in a 70 zone, so he pulled out of the median and onto the asphalt.....Daugherty says he caught up to the sedan, pulled alongside and paced it at about 77 mph. The dashboard camera in his SUV corroborates his story — to a point. According to undisputed testimony from a defense expert witness, the footage shows Daugherty pacing Ruiz, but certainly not at 77 mph. Judging by the speed at which the cars passed between the broken traffic lines, they were going 69 or 70 at best.

I think he gets re-elected for the same reasons Ron Paul gets re-elected. His general bias is similar to that of the region he represents, but more importantly he's known for going to the wall for any and all his constituents REGARDLESS of whether they voted for him.

Actually, I think this (from the same story) is what really triggered the mess.
At an evidentiary hearing six months later, Daugherty's story changed. He now claimed he pulled alongside the car only to get a look at an object in the backseat, which later turned out to be a child's pink car seat. The pacing was actually done from behind, he testified. Trauger was dubious of Daugherty's belated about-face.

In all fairness to the military, they do have to be kinda careful about the way they go about acquiring new tech. There have been quite a few lawsuits about unfairness in the bidding process. That being said, that slide made my head hurt. It's amazing that our troops are still the best-equipped army in the world, at that rate.

PHOENIX (KPHO) -Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Wednesday started an only female chain gang made up of women convicted of driving under the influence.
A press release said the inmates will be wearing pink T-shirts with bold letters describing messages about drinking and driving, especially with the Fourth of July holiday approaching along with the Major League Baseball All Star game.
"I hope this chain gang serves as a reminder of what happens when you drink and drive in Maricopa County," the sheriff said.
The chain gang inmates are incarcerated at the sheriff's Tents Jail where today's temperature are expected to reach 135 degrees. Fortunately for the chain gang inmates, the street temperature will only be 113, according to Arpaio's report.
It's a dry heat so it only feels like 108.

You're basically saying the people, as a whole, made the choice of partition. That is absolutely ridiculous. Agitators on both sides whipped up partisan frenzy, and the final choice of division-- both in how it was to happen, and the territory it was to encompass-- was by the British.
Please, please read something on the subject. It is an incredibly complex topic.
Saying it was a religious or cultural choice at a broader level is either an obvious observation-- the division was along religious lines-- or meaningless. It was certainly not a free choice.
I understand that one can micro analyse any political issue and bring it down to acts by this or that individual or external group. I was simply saying that the driving force behind all of it was the cultural/religious differences that did not allow peaceful coexistence. People born into that cannot be individually responsible any more than we are individually responsible for electing Obama, for example.
However if we cannot say that we have no control over our culture, politics or religion, then who the hell does?

I will be the first to admit that I assumed he was guilty, and that it may well turn out that the encounter was entirely consensual. (It does sound like he's a womanizer though, and while that isn't necessarily a crime it can still be highly obnoxious behavior.)

I understand that one can micro analyse any political issue and bring it down to acts by this or that individual or external group. I was simply saying that the driving force behind all of it was the cultural/religious differences that did not allow peaceful coexistence.
The situation is more complex; it wasn't inevitable that it would end that way. I don't know what else i can say to you. There were definite paths to amity and peace, that were made impossible by the specific actions of some, and the general policy the British had of playing racial and religious groups off of one another. It's not that their differences didn't allow it, it's that in this historical case, it didn't work out that way, because of many, many factors.
You've now moved from saying it was a free choice to making what is to me the trivial statement that the partition of India was driven by cultural and religious differences. Of course it was-- but that doesn't equate to it being a 'free choice', in any way, shape, or form. That's still an incredibly weird, and very incorrect, way of looking at it. Or to put it another way: if that's your definition of a free choice, what isn't a free choice?

We could speculate all day about what actually happened. A plausible storyline would be: he makes some lewd comment, she plays along, they begin to have a consensual "encounter" of some kind, she starts yelling, he panics and runs?
If he really does have a "reputation" (which by all accounts he does) it makes sense that she may have planned ahead a little bit.

No. This is, in fact, what I disagree with. It didn't dictate it. It was an incredibly complex historical event with a huge number of different influences, including things that were definitely not 'their' (given that there's jillions of different groups involved, I'm not sure who 'they' are) culture.

I can't really use them very much in my house, because as seems to be the trend in most modern houses, all of the ceiling fixtures are on dimmers. I haven't bothered with the dimmer-capable CFL's, and I don't really like the light that they produce so much anyway.

CFLs are sort of a stopgap. LEDs are getting better, and they can be worked into almost any figure. (Saw some on clearance at Lowe's for $$$, but they were 500 lumens, about a 65 watt incandescent.)

They're phasing out the 100 watt bulbs, and the bulb classifications will no longer be expressed in terms of watts (usage), but by lumens (output).
This way, people will no longer figure that they're getting a 60 watt equivalent bulb when they buy a 12w CFL - instead they see that the lumens are 750 (or thereabouts). Output temperature (color) is also noted on the new bulbs, which is the major issue with incandescent alternatives - whether it's CFLs or LED or halogen.
Also, technically incandescents are not being banned, manufacturers have to find ways to reduce power consumption and a couple of incandescents are coming to market that reduce consumption to meet the new law.

“The Audacity of Hope” Aims to Break Israel’s Legal Blockade
Despite claiming that their purpose is humanitarian, the actions of the 2010 Gaza flotilla organizers reveal their goal to be explicitly political. As noted earlier this week in the New York Times, the boat called “The Audacity of Hope” is carrying with it no aid. Its sole purpose, is not to bring food – of which 385 truckloads are delivered weekly by Israel to the Gaza Strip – but to openly and flagrantly violate Israel’s lawfully imposed naval blockade on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.
Indeed, in an article earlier this week in the Huffington Post, one of the boat’s organizers freely admits that her goal is not to deliver goods or materials into the Gaza Strip. It is clear that the goal of the flotilla organizers is provocation: to challenge Israel’s right of self-defense against a terrorist group that has caused close to a million Israeli civilians to live under the constant threat of attack for the better part of a decade.
“There’s a reason why Israel needs to impose this blockade: Just this past April, Hamas targeted an Israeli school bus with one of its missiles and a child riding on the bus was killed,” said IDF Spokeswoman Lietenant Colonel Avital Leibovich. A few months ago, Israel intercepted the “Victoria,” a vessel en route from Iran to Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip. The ship claimed its cargo contained “lentils and cotton,” but in reality it smuggled “a large cargo of sophisticated weaponry.”
Given these volatile regional realities, the Israel Navy must prevent all vessels from reaching Gaza’s shores–including the US boat–”The Audacity of Hope.” All ships carrying goods and materials to the Gaza Strip, may dock and unload cargo at Israel’s Ashdod port. Israeli authorities will ensure the transfer of all items to the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom land crossing, as it does on a weekly basis.

ANY of those you listed in #493 shoudl replace any/all the Toy Story ones
What the list does show (both the rottentom list as well as the ones excluded) are how good and wide ranging of an actor he became

I don't know. You still have to get those sorts of emotions in there, but it has to all be through your VOICE, not gestures or facial expressions. Not easy.

I mean, think about how hard it is to "read" emotions without facial expressions or gestures (like in writing, like here sometimes). Same thing applies when the voice is the only thing being used instead of the full range of expressions. and OOPS - I forgot I was bowing to superior intellect - need to stop making my arguments now.

In the case of Pakistan one should remember that for the most part they are the same people as those in India except for the religion they were born into (I doubt there are many born again Muslims in Pakistan) and they have the same colonial history, which borders they chose to change willingly and freely.
So we are left with religion and, I hasten to add, not only against the West.
As a 30-someodd-year-old man who's spent half his life in South Asia, you're wrong. One ascending generation and I have family remembers that personally experienced Partition. It's hours after the discussion, so I'm not going to belabor details, but:
-Pakistan got the short end of the stick relative to infrastructure and a resource-economy based that was all agriculture;
- absorbed the "ungovernable" tribal lands...with accompanying feuds and violence...in the Hindu Kush and the Af-Pak border that the British never integrated into the society, legal system, or economy;
- PK started with a population with far less education and literacy than India...those who opted to migrate were generally tenant farmers with not a lot to lose;
- East Pakistan/West Pakistan was an immediate issue, culturally and economically. East was Bengali, populous, and had most of the worthwhile assets; West was nominally Urdu--actually a mess--population-thin, and dirt poor. Guess which one is still behind the 8-ball?
-If you want a culture issue, consider this: Pakistan is almost unique in how it comes in to being. There's a stroke of a pen followed by a mass migration from multiple geographic regions and cultures, all in a window of five-to-ten years. It's got the issues of Israel, but in a 36x larger area, 24x the population, and with 4% of the per capita income.
-Pakistan is also unique in that it is basically a writ-large experimental community derived from the works of Iqbal and Jinnah, and they were assholes. Only half flippant: a handful of men sold a lot of people in pain a vision of nation, but had no practical chops to back it up. Early Pakistani politics is a depressing hash of well-intentioned men burning out trying to make it work until less noble means got the job done good-enough.
-To say nothing of the Jammu-Kashmir mess the British left.

Um...which "Afghani" culture? The Qalandar, the Pashtun tribes, the Baloch tribes, the Sindhi tribes, the urbanites of Kabul?
Tribe by tribe, region by region, you've got different gender dynamics, different versions of Islam and Sharia, et cetera. A lot of them are tribal societies, love their feuds, and are generally people I wouldn't want to settle down with, but they are emphatically not all Islamofascist proto-terrorists, nor all woman-maiming loons. The current "culture" of Afghanistan is enforced at gunpoint and routinely abused by the hegemons who implemented it. While purportedly designed to re-program the lax habits of native Muslims, Taliban rule seems to function largely as means of social control that reinforces the economic dominance of a few Pashtun leaders in bed with overseas terrorist organizations.
