Iron Man and Sub-Mariner, Issue #1

The first and only issue
Arts • Views: 38,654

Tonight’s image from the Lizard Collection is an unusual and somewhat rare item: issue #1 of “Iron Man and Sub-Mariner,” published in April 1968. It’s unusual because issue #1 was also the only issue ever published by Marvel Comics under this title, by design.

At this time, Marvel was promoting all of the characters who were in “shared” comic books (Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, and Strange Tales) to their own titles. To resolve the story lines, they put together this one-shot book, with two stories featuring Iron Man and the eternally angst-ridden Prince Namor, with penciling by the great Gene Colan. (An odd publishing strategy, never to be repeated.)

Our copy of this book is in excellent condition, with small flaws on the cover but white pages and brilliant inks throughout.

Tony and Namor! Satire and angst!

I'm not sure an angst-ridden guy should be hanging around Tony Stark. He'd probably have driven Namor to distraction had they not gone their separate ways.

I used to like the cartoon where Aquaman and Aqualad would ride around on seahorses.

I think by "whitefish" they were talking about cod and pollock, which are, indeedy-do, much better battered and deep fat-fried.

I'm in complete agreement with you on walleye and trout. A light pan sear in olive oil or butter, a little lime, salt and pepper.

Speaking of Norman Rockwell, I noticed that the artist for the ad drew him working on one of his numerous Scout paintings:
Image: growthofaleader.gif

As a Scouter, I love the paintings he did for the organization over his long career; Joseph Csatari's style is lot like Rockwell's (which makes sense, as he studied and worked with Rockwell).

Indeed...when I said "whitefish", I was referring to cod and pollock, the fish that are usually battered and deep-fried. Trout, crappie, and other freshwater "whitefish" (not including catfish), an egg wash and a dip in flour with some salt and pepper's fine with me if it's fried

I've tried iPads at the store. For me, a real keyboard is highly desirable. Plus, Apple refuses to admit that humans invented writing tools 5000 years ago because the finger was just not fine tipped enough to make small characters.

Went for a walk this evening... lovely evening. I ventured into new territory and came across a lovely loquat tree... that still had fruit! Sadly the fruit was too far gone (it's past season and hot outside) to be edible. Even more sad is that as I studied the tree it became apparent that the owner left most of the fruit on it to rot - and it was good fruit too, larger in size than most loquat trees (which are highly variable genetically.)

As I surveyed the lot it also became apparent that the owner just couldn't keep up with the place... That's not too unusual as older home owners eventually get to a point where they have to give up on taking care of their place.

Lesson learned - go for longer walks (yes, learnt last time also) earlier in the year.

Came across a beautiful orange tree also. Not one grafted onto dwarf stock, but a full size orange tree, well cared for and watered consistently. Quite a contrast to most of the citrus trees around here, which are grown as dwarfs and usually abandoned to boot.

One can learn quite a bit by just walking around and looking, absorbing the environment.

61 3CPO  Sat, Jul 2, 2011 8:23:07pm

Mmmmm! Loquats!

Growing up, my neighbor had a loquat tree which produced way more fruit than he could ever consume. We all used to go there and get oodles of them.

Man, that brings back some memories.

We have an elderly neighbor, as well, who can no longer keep up her 3-acre property.

Wasn't really a "neighbor" as the place is probably 1.5 miles away. It was a neighborhood in which I normally don't walk but decided to this time. That area is quite mixed in population, lots of older people but also young'uns as well as some apartment buildings.

However, your idea reminds me of a friend of mine who used to do that where he lives - helped a quite elderly neighbor keep up with things.

Around me... mostly younger home owners or apartments or mixed-use (churches, schools, etc.)

I'm in no immediate rush. It's just a thought in the back of my head for now. I have a laptop at work that the company lets me use, and the one I have at home is good enough to store my music, write my school papers and projects, and allows me to finish whatever work projects I need to, since both computers have Windows 7 on them.

I just like the idea of getting a tablet PC somewhere down the line, maybe before SXSW next year, since it would be way convenient. That's why I'm asking for advice now, so I have an idea of what's good, what sucks, and everything in between.

But that was too complicated for him and he hated trying to use it. His 9 year old Grandson now enjoys making stop motion animation with daddy's digicam and iMovie on it :D

re: #32 austin_blue

I actually like fresh-water whitefish smoked. Nomnomnoms...

I introduced a friend of mine to whitefish salad bagel, with tomato.

For trout, I do butterflied gomasio trout -

1 butterflied trout
1 garlic clove, chopped
1 1/2 tbsp Gomasio - toasted sesame/sea salt/fine seaweed mix, can get at a gourmet store with an Asian foods section, or Japanese grocer
2 tsp Soy sauce, Japanese brand preferred
Olive oil to drizzle
Sesame oil to finish

Preheat oven to 325 (I put this in the toaster oven, broiler setting, on tin foil - works great)
Rinse the butterflied trout and dry with paper towel
With a fork, poke the inside flesh all over
Rub the chopped garlic all over
Brush the soy sauce on
Sprinkle the trout with gomasio
Brush on olive oil
Broil for about 20 minutes at 325.

Finish with a dash of sesame oil, serve with a sauteed green vege like spinach or baby bok choy, and cooked/steamed rice.

No, nobody. Also nobody's noticing that Palin's bus tour which she insisted was not cancelled is still cancelled. Massive malaise continues for the Republican party.

And none of them are raising much money.

Here's an interesting opinion piece out of Dallas.

Trust me, he's running. And he will be a load for the rest of the GOP:

the stalkers at Blogmocracy briefly posted a thread lambasting Crazy Pam for not wanting to align with Nazis. Now deleted.

I think that even they realized that wasn't a smart position to take. Blogmocracy has maintained that it does not permit anti-Semitism (and one commentator was actually banned for it), so to go after Pam would have contradicted their previous positions entirely. They were still wrong to put the thread up, of course, but they'll just call "Kalegore" for bringing it up. Even when their better impulses win out, the butthurt is still far stronger than reason there.

I'm going with my husband.

Guess I'll skip my recommendations for Tijuana brothels, then...

Straight scoop on beaches - they'll be crowded at this time of year.

Best view (and photo op) of San Diego - is from Cabrillo National Monument at the end of Point Loma. The Navy controls the gate to road onto the sound end of the Point and I don't know what the closing hours are now, but they used to keep it open later in summer.

Personally I prefer the mountains and deserts to the beaches, but if you husband is cooped up in a meeting during the day it'll be hard for you to get out that far east during daylight.

The downtown area is packed full of restaurants, but I've not really scouted the place in years. My favorite sushi place used to be down there but it is closed now. Parking is hard to find on the weekends, but during the weekdays one can conceivably find parking downtown... beware of night time baseball games though.

An evening walk for you two in downtown La Jolla, by the sea, would probably be a romantic occasion - very common to see couples down there. Expensive restaurants in the area.

Party leadership and caucus memberships

House Sovereignty Caucus (Co-Founder)
International Conservation Caucus
Republican House Policy Committee (Chairman)
Sportsmen's Caucus

Shortly before the midterm elections in November 2006, McCotter made a $250,000 contribution to the National Republican Congressional Committee. After the elections, when the Republicans had become the minority party in the House of Representatives, McCotter sought the Chairmanship of the House Republican Policy Committee. The other Republican seeking the post was Congressman Darrell Issa of southern California. In late 2006, McCotter was selected by the House Republican Caucus to head the Republican Policy Committee.
[edit] Political positions

McCotter is a member of both the moderate Republican Main Street Partnership and the conservative Republican Study Committee.

In May 2007, House Minority Leader John Boehner labeled a bill by House Democrats aimed at stopping energy price gouging "as pointless political pandering."[2] McCotter and 55 other Republicans voted for the bill.

McCotter has been an avid supporter of the United States' involvement in the Iraq War. His continued support for the war has led to some community protest. Several groups have joined together under the banner of "Americans Against Escalation in Iraq" to pressure him into voting to end the war. On July 5, 2007, forty of the 662,563 members of his district staged a press conference and a demonstration in front of the congressman's office.[citation needed] Organizers also promised to hold a three-day vigil called "Take a Stand Day" on August 28 in order to convince McCotter that his constituents wanted him to end the war and bring the troops home safely. In late fall 2007, opponents of McCotter hold weekly vigils outside of his Milford office in Oakland County to protest his consistent support of President George W. Bush's policies in Iraq.

On September 22, 2008, McCotter became the first Republican in the House of Representatives to oppose the Paulson bailout plan, calling it "American socialism." A week later, he and 132 other Republicans voted against the $700 billion bailout bill.

A July 24, 2009, press release from McCotter's House website states that McCotter will introduce a House Resolution on July 27, 2009, calling on President Obama to apologize to police Sergeant James Crowley for his remarks about the latter's arresting Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. for disorderly conduct on July 16, 2009, if President Obama doesn't first issue an apology on his own.[3]

On November 7, 2009, McCotter voted against the America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, along with all but one of the other Republican Congressmen. The bill passed 220–215.[4]

Oh, and if you're looking for something to do during the day while your husband is at the conference:

- Down at the "Old Town" state park, which is very central and easy to locate, is a shopping street that's supposed to recreate 19th century San Diego. It fails at that (it's just another tourist trap), and most of the stores carry the usual cheaply made tourist-trap items, but a couple of the stores also carry hand made goods from local crafts-people, from both here and from Mexico. If you're looking for mementos/gifts that have more authenticity to them I'd suggest trying there.

They were still wrong to put the thread up, of course, but they'll just call "Kalegore" for bringing it up. Even when their better impulses win out, the butthurt is still far stronger than reason there.

Despite the struggling economy and broad dissatisfaction with national conditions, the public has a positive view of the United States' global standing. But more think that the U.S. is one of the greatest countries in the world than say it stands above all other countries.

Slightly more than half (53%) say that the United States "is one of the greatest countries in the world, along with some others." Fewer (38%) say that the U.S. "stands above all other countries in the world." Just 8% think that "there are other countries that are better than the U.S."

re: #214 austin_blue

How much longer can we afford American Exceptionalism?

We've not been able to afford it since the fall of the Soviet Union. In the cold war is was part of the general propaganda to strengthen the idea that the US was purely good and the USSR was purely evil.

As an ideology though it really doesn't do anything but support extreme nationalism. It doesn't help build economic value or social well being.

It doesn't really need to be "funded", IMO, because humans are already prepped to believe their tribe is the best and the others are inferior.

216 Henchman Ghazi-808  Sat, Jul 2, 2011 11:03:04pm

Herman Cain does pique my interest. I'm wondering how the GOP will deal with Cain after getting their butthole touched by the election of the First Black POTUS.

Herman Cain revs up mainstream conservatives

In his pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination, Cain's views on the economy and his fiery delivery have resonated with some in the GOP. His campaign has also been marked by controversy, including his comment that he would not want a Muslim bent on killing Americans in his administration. Just this week, Cain accused comedian Jon Stewart of disliking him because he is an "American black conservative."

Already losing some of his cachet to tea party favorite Michele Bachmann, Cain, the lone African-American GOP candidate, is trying to win over a party that hasn't had a black nominee. Sidestepping race as an issue in his campaign may have helped him gain momentum in recent weeks, but whether he can turn vigor into votes will depend largely on voters' ability to look past his skin color and perceive him as a serious candidate.

"He appeals to people because he doesn't talk about race," said South Carolina Republican strategist Chip Felkel. "I think that too often, if anyone does go into that discussion, it's then used by other people to criticize them. I don't think that needs to be part of his narrative. He's a business person. He's an American."

Uh... dude... nevermind.

Do you really find it shocking? It's pretty well worn debate territory at this point.

I think it comes down to the near impossibility of clearly delineating 'terrorism'; its a messy concept.

For what its worth, here's the relevant part of the interview. I'd say her particular deployment of the word 'terrorism' is pretty poorly defined, but that's about par for the course, whether you are on the left or the right.

AW: I think Israel is the greatest terrorist in that part of the world. And I think in general, the United States and Israel are great terrorist organizations themselves. If you go to Gaza and see some of the bombs -- what's left of the bombs that were dropped -- and the general destruction, you would have to say, yeah, it's terrorism. When you terrorize people, when you make them so afraid of you that they are just mentally and psychologically wounded for life -- that's terrorism. So these countries are terrorist countries.

FP: How is the United States a terrorist country?

AW: It is. Absolutely, it is. It has terrorized people around the globe for a very long time. It has fought against countries that have tried to change their governments, that have tried to have democracies, and the United States has intervened and interfered, like in Guatemala or Chile. I feel that it is so unreasonable, and I don't quite understand how they can claim everyone else is a terrorist and they are not when so many people right this minute are terrified of the drones, for instance, in the war in Afghanistan. The dropping of bombs on people -- isn't that terrorism?

FP: Of course Israel and the U.S. aren't the only ones that use bombs. Hamas has fired rockets at Israel in the past.

AW: Yes. And I'm not for a minute saying anybody anywhere should fire rockets. I mean, I would never do it. Nor would I ever supply such a thing to anyone. But it's extremely unequal. If people just acknowledge how absurdly unequal this is. This is David and Goliath, but Goliath is not the Palestinians. They are David. They are the ones with the slingshot. They are the ones with the rocks and relatively not-so-powerful rockets. Whereas the Israelis have these incredibly damaging missiles and rockets. When do you as a person of conscience speak and say enough is enough?

That said, I wouldn't say it's a reflection on Tracy Chapman or Oprah Winfrey unless they were to come right out and say they agree 100% with Walker on this point
That said, it is interesting that in the interview Walker interjects that It started with the Six Day War in 1967. That happened shortly after my wedding to a Jewish law student. as if him being Jewish gave her some better insight into the situation than if she had married a Mormon

UNLESS that "jewish student" was born and raised in Israel and witnessed 1st hand what was transpiring, he had no more insight into it (although he may have had more interest) than any other "student" of the day

Truth is that people get (falsely) labelled as antisemites (or self hating Jews) for being critical of Israel pretty frequently.

It should tell us something, that the GOP's bar is set so low, they are actually considering someone like Michele Bachmann as a candidate, as well as kicking around the name of someone like Herman Cain, who has never held elected office in his life, and knows jack-frack about governing even a municipality, let alone a country complete with the most powerful country on earth.

The same bunch runs some of the most unhinged "candidates" on earth, whackjobs like Carl Paladino, Allen West, Sharron Angle, Christine O'Donnell, Star Parker, and Angela McGowan, and is chomping at the bit for Sarah Palin to get up off her duff and go snuff all the liberals for them or whatever, while they hide behind her skirts.

The only thing lower than a rightwing bigot is a rightwing bigoted coward. I hope some normal conservatives start standing up to these people soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

He was probably trying to dial down the bigotry for the current wife. He even had Elton John performing.

Yeah the dumb bigots love hiding behind us for that. They should not wonder, though, why the pool for that kind of thing is so small. I remember reading about Elton John at the wedding. I supported him when he played Tel Aviv last year, but not when he played Limbaugh.

Though, I suppose when one is an A-lister, a venue really is just a venue.

"He appeals to people because he doesn't talk about race," said South Carolina Republican strategist Chip Felkel.

Uh... dude... nevermind.

Stupid is, as stupid says.

Evidently, Chip Feckel needs to go back to Homeschool Voucher Grad High School and re-take "listening for comprehension", because he hasn't been paying attention to Herman "Because I'm Black" Cain at all.

His schtick is 100% old 90s PC just with a few words replaced with conservative, anti-Muslim, US-exceptionalist claptrap.

Look who went racism-chasing, crying to Juan Williams about Jon Stewart.

WILLIAMS: Mr. Cain sees a racial element in Stewart's comments. He joins me now. Herman Cain, thanks for coming in.

CAIN: Hello, Juan.

WILLIAMS: Tell me what's your beef with Jon Stewart.

CAIN: First of all, Jon Stewart is a comedian. I understand that. But when he starts to mock the three-page joke, him being a comedian, he ought to have known that that was a joke. But he took it seriously and then he started to stretch it out with all of the other stuff. Now, when he mocked me in the dialogue of the old "Amos and Andy"…

WILLIAMS: Dialect.

This complaint about Amos and Andy is from the person who kicked off his own campaign with "Awwwww, shucky-duckie!!!"

Really? Lol "shucky ducky"?

He also don't snuff his own seed after makin' a mistake with one of his ho's. How sweet.

Yeah, he's a real serious candidate, that those white teabaggers with the obama-is-a-monkey signs will flock to the polls for during the primaries. Lol sure he is.

I had this same issue (sold it last year) but it was not in such hot shape because I was a subscriber. Marvel in those days had the bad habit of folding the comic in half for mailing. That offended me even way back when, so I was a short-term subscriber. It was those "duplex" comics that got me hooked for a long time. I took some to summer camp in 1966 and, when the story didn't wrap up, I bought the next issue, and the next.....

One would think. But that presumes people are following good logic.

I've noticed the newest litmus test in Conservatopia is whether or not one talks about race, at all, since all that ended when Ronald Reagan said "tear down these signs!" and made the New Black Panthers take down all those racist Colored-only signs they put up in the 60s. /

Herman Cain talks about race, incessantly. It's only a matter of time until he's dumped on the "race-baiting, race-hustler-negro" boat with the rest of us, so I'm not sure who any of these jokers think they are kidding lol

A moonbat doing what a moonbat does

She's made it pretty clear that she was disgusted by Leventhal's support for Israel, and considers herself to have gained insight into the mentality of Jews who don't agree with her through him.

There's a bit in one of her essays about Gaza, where an old lady blesses her: "May God protect you from the Jews", and Walker says she responded, "It's too late. I already married one."

Charming.

Little-known Republican McCotter opens White House bid

Thaddeus McCotter, a guitar-playing Michigan congressman with an independent streak, formally launched a longshot bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination on Saturday.

The conservative McCotter made his formal announcement at an Independence Day rock festival outside Detroit. He filed the paperwork on Friday to enter the Republican race for the right to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama.

"Through your hard work and through your principled determination to bequeath to your children a better America, we will restructure the government," McCotter told the crowd at the rock festival, where he played guitar with a band. "... What we need in Washington is someone who knows the future is not big government -- it is self government."

In the last ditch, almost all of us will be back with him. The alternatives are unthinkable.

I've been thinking for a while, this is why the GOTP will never let one of the TP whackodoodles on the ticket, at least not in the president slot.

Maybe an unknown quantity like this new chap, but no Bachmanns, Palins, or other name-brand extremes.

It will bring every disgruntled, grumbling "primary Obama" so-called "progressives" out of the woodwork and into the polls. They need to do their best to get left voters to stay home.

Power out as Phoenix temps hit record 118

About 4,000 homes in the metropolitan Phoenix area are without power - and air-conditioning - on a record-shattering day of heat in one of the nation's hottest cities.

Phoenix hit a high temperature of 118 degrees on Saturday, topping a 10-year-old record of 116 degrees for the date.

Good Morning all!

I just learned about this.

When asked about his young passenger, Mecklenborg said, "I understand the interest in the DUI part, I guess, but the rest is a personal matter."

A personal matter?

Perhaps this is Rep. Mecklenborg's eureka moment.

Pro-choice Americans have always argued that a woman's sex life is a personal matter, and that any decisions involving her body are her business. We understand only too well why Mecklenborg would rather we stop asking questions about his private life.

Yeah. I had some stupid tech the first time I called so I called a friend of the wife who did a check for me. They keep track of everything btw, he knew how many times I had dropped connection going back at least a month. It didn't seem like the modem would be the issue to me but he thought otherwise. I bought the old one. I picked up a new one at WM Friday. As I was pulling in there was a guy driving an old beat up pick-up truck leaving with a kids massive wooden jungle gym. It must have been a display model because it was per-assembled. They had some guy with dreadlocks sitting on top of it, not sure why. He was sitting at least 7' high off the bed of the truck. Would have made a good "people of wal-mart" submission.

Another write-up on Cory Maye:

Maye takes plea, will soon be free
[Link: www.clarionledger.com...]

In 2009, the Mississippi Appeals Court concluded Maye deserved a second trial, contending that his trial should have been held, as he requested, in Jefferson Davis County since that is where the crime took place.

In December, the state Supreme Court ordered a second trial, but for a different reason: The trial judge erred in not telling the jury it could consider Maye's claim of self-defense.

On Friday, District Attorney Hal Kitrell said prosecutors believed they had no choice but to agree to the plea bargain because of all the post-trial rulings.

"That caused concern to our office," he said. "Obviously we had to re-evaluate the case, which involved talking with the family. We felt it was in the best interest of the family and the state of Mississippi to go forward with the plea."

One thing the article doesn't point out, but should have, is the prosecutors medical expert has been entirely discredited and his testimony has been shot full of holes. That had to play a role in deciding not to re-try the case.

Yes. There are some interesting points here:

1. She's not above the "some of my best friends are Jews" retort.

and, more important

2. This is about JEWS, not Israel. Her hatred and vitriol are directed to Jews! Many people of her ilk claim they have nothing against Jews; they're simply protesting the actions of a specific government. Bulls**t!

Great and sad story all at the same time. Fitting for the 4th:

Soldier leaves legacy much larger than 'he was gay'
[Link: www.cnn.com...]

Cpl. Andrew Charles Wilfahrt, 31, is believed to be the first gay U.S. soldier to die in battle since President Obama signed the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," the policy forcing gays in the military to hide that part of their lives or risk being kicked out.
.....
Andrew was so well-liked his comrades named a combat outpost for the soldier with the infectious smile. COP Wilfahrt sits 6 kilometers from Kandahar. To his buddies, it is not named for a gay soldier, but for one who fought with valor.

"Mom, everyone knows. Nobody cares," he told his mother in their final conversation, a phone call from Afghanistan on Thanksgiving.
.....
Andrew met with a retired gay Marine in Minneapolis bars and coffee shops in the months before signing up. He wanted to know the pros and cons of being gay in the military.

He'd been volunteering at food shelters, animal shelters, an AIDS hospice, voter-registration drives and other non-profit initiatives. At 29, he was living with his parents and looking for more out of life.

The retired Marine says Andrew told him he wanted to serve so a soldier with a wife and children wouldn't have to go fight.

"He wasn't making a statement" about being gay. "He was doing it for everybody else," says Dan, who asked that his last name not be used. "He will forever be my hero because he joined for the right reasons. He was a silent part of the gay community, but it's just unspeakable how big of an impact he's had now."
.....
Andrew earned the nickname Slovak for his macho speak and exaggerated, arrow-straight gait. Andrew was like that, a ham who figured out a way to fit in. When he laughed, he threw his head back, closed his eyes and let out a sound that made everyone else chuckle.

In combat, he rode with two other soldiers. One was African-American, the other from Hawaii. They were known as "Team Minority."

I love the ones that obey the traffic laws they want to obey (they take up a lane,,, signal when turning,,, etc) but have no problem breaking the ones they don't want to (weaving in and out of cars at a red light to get up front ,,, NOT stopping at red lights/ stop signs ,, going against the grain of traffic if it's more convenient)

Exactly. I was following one idiot bike messenger once in downtown Denver. He was in the middle lane of a six lane city street. So, I figured since he was going pretty fast and was in the middle of the street -- and while he was pretending to be a car -- I'd follow him since it was also a turn lane ahead that I was on. Safe following distance. Nope, didn't satisfy this twirp. He turns around and flips me the bird.

One morning I saw another bike messenger try to beat the light rail. He lost. Never found out what happened to him but it smacked him and the rear of his bicycle pretty good. They took him away in a stretcher with a neck brace and all. He seemed conscious but way out of it.

I've seen a lot of road cyclists in California so far. Denver gets some but isn't as popular as advertised. It's high but it isn't massive. They have those way overpriced (credit and debit card only) community bike stations. No cash BTW. Mountain biking is pretty big and you can see a lot of people on the weekends driving around with the bikes on the racks.

Ah. Right. It's an overall thing in the Denver area. Guess you could call it "mixed use" sports. Light rail gets packed coming in from the burbs into downtown Denver. When I was riding it the other way it looked like standing room only sometimes. This would be during commute hours. Sure saves on parking costs for those people. Mostly "park and ride" commuters there.

U.S. Expands Its Drone War Into Somalia

The clandestine American military campaign to combat Al Qaeda’s franchise in Yemen is expanding to fight the Islamist militancy in Somalia, as new evidence indicates that insurgents in the two countries are forging closer ties and possibly plotting attacks against the United States, American officials say.

An American military drone aircraft attacked several Somalis in the militant group the Shabab late last month, the officials said, killing at least one of its midlevel operatives and wounding others.

The strike was carried out by the same Special Operations Command unit now battling militants in Yemen, and it represented an intensification of an American military campaign in a mostly lawless region where weak governments have allowed groups with links to Al Qaeda to flourish.

A top Massachusetts legislative official has apologized for likening proposed identification badges for lobbyists to Jews' concentration camp tattoos.

Of the Republican proposal, he said, "Hitler during the concentration camps tattooed all of the Jewish people so he would know who was Jew and who wasn't, and that's something that I just don't go along with," The Boston Globe reported.

Joanna: I dunno, it just seems wrong.

Peter Gibbons: It's NOT wrong. INITECH is wrong. INITECH is an evil corporation, all right? Chochkies is wrong. Doesn't it bother you that you have to get up in the morning and you have to put on a bunch of pieces of flair?

Joanna: Yeah, but I'm not about to go in and start taking money from the register.

Peter Gibbons: Well, maybe you should. You know, the Nazis had pieces of flair that they made the Jews wear.

Joanna: What?

Ok! I finally read the Casey Anthony defense closing. And I concur, it is weak.

Defense attorneys countered that the toddler accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool, and that her seemingly carefree mother in fact was hiding emotional distress caused by alleged sexual abuse from her father.

But, the defense has an obligation to say something, if she maintains her innocence.

I've been keeping away from the various news channels since most of the reporting is on this trial. I'll be glad when it's over.

Wasn't that a complete change from their opening argument? That the parents did it?

I haven't followed it too closely, but part of the defense, I believe, that she was sexually abused by her father (and brother?) and they weren't able to prove that either.

I think I just read that the judge told the defense attorney he could not mention that, because there was zero proof or evidence of any of that actually occurring.

re: #571 marjoriemoon

I guess they thought that they could get at least one juror to sympathize with her using the old "I'm not guilty! I'm a victim myself" argument. And it could just work. I mean Ellie Nessler got off for murdering a man in a courtroom, using a similar defense. There's nothing more pre-meditated than that. (She murdered a man she alleged molested her son, when it was clear the case was weak and he wouldn't be convicted. Women around the country made her a hero! To me, even if the accused were guilty (which he wasn't!), stepping into a courtroom and shooting a defendant is such an egregious crime that the death penalty would be warranted.)

Defense attorney IS allowed, however, to mention the "dysfunctional" family. Which I think is absolutely true, just from watching all of this play out from the time Caylee went missing. Geez.

Chomsky to Chavez: Don't spoil Venezuelan democracy

American Jewish intellectual Noam Chomsky, author of last week told the Guardian that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has too much power and is making an "assault" on the country's democracy.

"Concentration of executive power, unless it's very temporary and for specific circumstances, such as fighting World War II, is an assault on democracy. You can debate whether [Venezuela's] circumstances require it: Internal circumstances and the external threat of attack, that's a legitimate debate. But my own judgment in that debate is that it does not," Chomsky told The Observer, the Guardian's weekend paper.

Close friendships are hard to break up.

Lots of people in prison come from dysfunctional families. Casey will be just one more. Whether they go with Murder 1 or some lesser charge that gives her the option of parole in 8-10 years is up to the jury. I don't think she's a sociopath - just someone who should have been picked up to be on Big Brother, Survivor, Jersey Shore or one of those other stupid reality TV shows - along with about 30% of the rest of America.

Heh, well it's not a justifiable reason, of course, but it could save her from the death penalty. I think she's guilty as sin, but I'm not a juror.

The sweatlodge death trial of James Ray is one that I found interesting. Guilty of negligent homicide, not manslaughter which is disappointing to me. This man is a fraud who endangered people's lives to the point of death and the max he can get is 11 years.

I don't get it...Chomsky is criticizing Chavez.

The judge spent over a year in jail, and was moved to house arrest pending a trial over corruption charges. Chomsky, who lobbied the Venezuelan government for her release, wrote that "[Alfani] has been subject to acts of violence and humiliations to undermine her human dignity. I am convinced that she must be set free."

You must have some other reason for hating other than his religion.

Honestly, I think this was probably a case of reckless endangerment...the mother was probably stoned out of her gourd when the kid died and didn't notice for a few hours, and then panicked. But this family has exhibited (in the limited exposure of the court and media) that they don't have very good coping skills. That said, I hope she goes to prison for ten years...she'll probably be better off when she gets out and starts a new life. Her family is obviously poison.

I think this woman has absolutely no conscience whatsoever. None, and whatever the reason is, doesn't matter. She's purely completely selfish and self-absorbed.

The Secret. The Secret to bilking people out of their money by telling them to think positive thoughts. I really should have made this new age bullshit into a business, but I have a conscious.

I know a bit about sweatlodges having attended one regularly for about a year. From everything I read about James Ray, he's a charlatan that didn't care one iota about the health of his participants or the way to conduct a proper ceremony.

Again, I have a limited scope not actually watching the trial, but the most they seemed to be guilty of was over-indulging her when she probably needed a lot more discipline. It seems she learned how to be an ace manipulator, lying and cheating to get her way which is basically how she led her entire life.

I have 2 friends who do this to their kids and it scares the hell out of me. They rarely discipline because they don't want to hear their kids cry. They negotiate every minutia of their lives and if the kid doesn't want to comb their hair or put on clothes, they don't have to.

Thread's dead, but I know exactly what you're talking about.

I have a friend who uses the same so-called "parenting method" with her kid, who is already showing signs of being manipulating, narcissistic, materialistic, unruly, and well on her way to delusions about how the world actually works. I won't even babysit, because I do not trust her.

My friend thinks her child's "strong will" is cute and funny but it's going to get her in a lot of trouble, the older she gets.

The worst part is, no one will intervene and just come out and say the kid needs to be told that "no" does not mean "this is our time for 'negotiating'." I'm probably the only one with the ovaries to do it before she gets out of this bubble they are raising her in, gets in the real world, and gets her feelings seriously hurt or something worse. But I already know if I do that, that's the end of the friendship. This is where it's ending up.
