KS Gov. Brownback Appoints Lawyer for Radical Anti-Abortion Group to State Medical Board

Across the country, extreme anti-abortion forces are on the march
US News • Views: 29,161

Another front opens up in the Republican Party’s total war on women’s rights, as Kansas’s religious fundamentalist Governor Sam Brownback appoints a lawyer for one of the nation’s most hateful and extreme anti-abortion groups, Operation Rescue, to the state health board that oversees abortion providers: Brownback Taps Lawyer for Anti-Abortion Activists for State Medical Board.

Brownback has tapped Rick Macias, a lawyer that has represented the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, to serve on the Kansas Board of Healing Arts. Operation Rescue is a national group that moved its offices to Kansas in 2007. The group moved in order to focus their opposition work on Dr. George Tiller, who provided late-term abortion services in his Wichita clinic until an anti-abortion extremist murdered him in his church in May 2009.

The 15-member Board of Healing Arts handles licensing for medical doctors, physical therapists, and other health care providers. Macias would serve on the board through June 2014.

Macias has represented anti-abortion activists in cases dating back to the early ’90s in which they were accused of trespassing at Tiller’s clinic to protest. He has also represented Kansans for Life in court. Macias has a private firm specializing in adoption services, and his website includes the tag line, “Your Baby, Your Choices!” He has also supported anti-abortion electoral candidates through the Kansans for Life Political Action Committee. His brother, Archie Macias, currently serves as the treasurer of the PAC.

///Yes, because here in the USA there are just so many people arguing that abortions need to be mandatory regardless of the mother's thoughts on the issue!

I feel like the progressive movement has been asleep at the wheel, while we've been losing much of the progress of the past 70 years.

I hope we'll wake up the sleeping giant in time, but I'm not optimistic.

Kansas GOP leadership has a history of putting hard right whackos in charge of things like this, like Perry in Texas we can expect a series of social conservative hijinks from Brownback until people wise up and vote him out.

4 Randall Gross  Thu, Jul 7, 2011 11:02:16am

This is also another reason why election 2012 is so important - we can't afford any more conservatives on the Supreme court since they will be ruling on caseloads created by these SoCons for decades to come.

They'll refuse to certify doctors that believe they should be allowed to perform abortions.

Macias will be one of three public (non-medical doctors) members that sit on the board. It's unlikely he will be able do much damage on his own, but he will be in a position to relay inside information about the board to his anti-abortion allies.

Tea Party Congressman Warns of Obama Impeachment (Video)

Rep. Tim Scott said that if President Obama should invoke a clause in the 14th Amendment in order to bypass Congress and borrow beyond the debt limit, the Republican lawmaker would consider that an act worthy of impeachment.

“This president is looking to usurp congressional oversight to find a way to get it done without us. My position is that is an impeachable act from my perspective,” said Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) at a meeting sponsored by the Tea Party group LowCountry 9.12 Project on Tuesday.

Out of curiosity, I just looked at the make-up of the Kansas Board of Healing Arts, which is the name of the state medical board.

The attorney is only the second non-medical professional on the Board. The other is a professor at a Catholic college, who has lectured on integrating your conservative values with progressive financial issues. So I'm guessing he's against abortion also, and looking at the expiration date of his term, he also was appointed by Brownback.

So essentially, the medical board is being salted by Brownback with a bunch of non-medical professionals who all oppose abortion.

It's not all that Brownback is doing:

Brownback's Program to Save Marriages

I couldn't find a good article about it, but he's also initiating a program where recently released prisoners will be paired up with a Christian as part of some program to get them from relapsing back into crime. It's called Out4Life, which is kinda a funny name considering that being 'out' can be taken in a way that Brownback obviously does not intend.

I'd say the man is an embarassment, but I'm more appalled by the amount of support he's getting than anything else.

House rejects effort to prohibit funds for Libya

The House has rejected an effort to prohibit funds for the U.S. military operation against Libya.

The vote was 229-199 on Thursday. Republicans and Democrats had complained that the conflict was illegal because President Barack Obama had never sought congressional approval for the operation.

But the House turned back an amendment that would have barred the use of taxpayer dollars to continue U.S. participation in the NATO-led mission.

The US House of Representatives voted Thursday to forbid the Pentagon from providing military equipment, training, advice or support to Libya's rebels.

By a 225-201 margin, lawmakers adopted an amendment to an annual spending bill restricting Washington's ability to help fighters looking to overthrow longtime Libyan strongman Moamer Kadhafi.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), who has led the bipartisan opposition to the illegal war in Libya, will today be the principal cosponsor of a bipartisan amendment to finally and fully end the war in Libya. The bipartisan amendment to the Defense Department Appropriations Act, H.R. 2219, is expected to come up for debate in the early afternoon.

Even the polling shows the public more and more ambivalent about reproductive rights. This is one PR battle that we are losing, and losing badly, yet no one seems willing to lead the counter-charge. There's intelligence involved in the overall of creation. . .I don't think we're really at the point of teaching this in the classroom. I think what we passed in the U.S. Senate in 2002 the Santorum Amendment is really what we should be doing, and that is that you teach the controversy, you teach what is fact is fact, and what is theory is theory, and you move from that proceedings, rather than from teaching some sort of different thought. And this, I really think that's the area we should concentrate on at the present time, is teaching the controversy.

Really, that's what's ticked me off about Obama's handling of the situation since the GOP started piping up at the WPA. He could have argued that it was unconstitutional and dared them to prove otherwise, but instead he's trying to create a loophole that says "So long as there's no boots on the ground, WPA doesn't apply." Because I just know that's a loophole that's going to be further exploited by future presidents.

Thing is, they don't think about, because they want to believe that the next guy in line is going to be of the same party. "Hey, things are so 'good,' why would America not keep them in power?" Then the tide turns, the opposition comes to power, and suddenly all that power that the previous admin gathered up is a "threat" to America and everything it stands for. Then, suddenly, the anti-government nutjobs go from being shoved into the closet to having a seat at the table.

Tea Party Congressman Warns of Obama Impeachment (Video)

Fox news, course misses the big story. Not just impeachment, but also civil war and armed revolt.

Invoking the Constitution is now an impeachable offense.

Sarah Palin in tears as husband rages over Hollywood stars ripping her in new film

Sarah Palin was reduced to tears after her husband flew into a rage over her new movie The Undefeated, sources say.

The former Alaska Governor and possible Presidential contender cried after watching Hollywood stars take pot shots at her in the documentary.

Filmmaker Stephen Bannon included attacks on her from several stars.
....
An insider told the National Enquirer: 'Sarah was brought to tears and Todd was livid after they saw the movie with a crowd of supporters in Iowa.'

'Todd said the film is going to give Sarah's enemies fresh ammunition to destroy her as she considers running for president.

I wonder if there's any truth to this.

“We’re at the point where there would have to be some, you know, some serious disruptions in order not to raise [the debt ceiling],” he said. “I’m willing to do that.

The state's Board of Pardons and Parole ruled that Leal did not deserve to have his death sentence commuted to life in prison without parole. Perry normally accepts the board's ruling when making his own decision, but he could grant a 30-day reprieve.

The justices will decide whether to issue a stay of execution, and whether to decide the broader legal question of what rights death row inmates from foreign nations deserve. If they intervene, the constitutional issues would be addressed by the high court in coming months, delaying Leal's execution.

It's not just Sarah Palin:

Michelle Bachmann, on Sean Hannity's show:

"Well, I’ve been visiting all the primary states, and I’ve been talking to people, and people all over the place are asking me, why, in Barack Obama’s America, someone who murders a baby who happens to be white doesn’t get punished. And Sean, I’ve been on the front lines, and I know people are afraid not just of the massive debt created by the Pelosi-Reid government, they’re worried about the Muslim Brotherhood, which has clear ties to terror groups dedicated to creating a worldwide Islamic caliphate, and they’re worried that Eric Holder’s Justice Department isn’t going to do anything about it if the Brotherhood or another group comes for their children."

I think the Obama admin had to at least ask...just like Bush did before the original prosecution. But this guy brutally raped and murdered a 16 y/o girl.

I agree...

Darwin vindicated, again:

Evolution and domestication of seed structure shown to use same genetic mutation

For the first time, scientists have identified a mutation in plants that was selected twice - during both natural evolution and domestication.

The mutation has been identified as the source of variation in the evolution of fruit morphology in Brassica plants and it was also the source of key changes during the domestication of rice.

"We have shown that the genetic source of both natural and man-made changes was the same," said one of the authors on the findings, Dr Robert Sablowski from the John Innes Centre, which is strategically funded by the BBSRC.

"These insights indicate that evolutionary development may have more to offer plant breeders than previously anticipated," he said.

Wild rice scatters its seeds easily to maximise dispersal, so an important part of domestication was to select for cultivars that retain seeds that can then be harvested. Previous studies identified the mutation - a single nucleotide change - that reduced seed dispersal. John Innes Centre scientists were surprised to find that the same nucleotide change was behind variation in the evolution of fruit morphology in the Brassica plants.

The Brassica family and rice are separated by 140 million years of evolution and the anatomies of their fruit are very different. However, this work, published in the journal Current Biology, shows that the same genetic tools are applicable over a large evolutionary distance and that evolution can offer insights into the tools that might be useful to breeders.

"Ever since Darwin used domestication as a model for evolution there has been debate over whether the same type of variation is relevant to both domestication and natural evolution," said Dr Sablowski.

"In this study we have shown that the same type of variation is relevant to both processes. In addition, we saw that a surprisingly simple genetic change is enough to explain differences between the fruits of different Brassica relatives. Now further examples will be needed to show whether the simplicity of the regulatory change in our case is exceptional."

Darwin used domesticated pigeon breeding as an example of selection. Creationists deny that such selection has any relevance to the story of life on this planet sans humans.

But, as this example shows, it does, it certainly does. One simply genetic change, a single mutation, was selected by human farmers and previously by natural selection, in two very different genera of plants.
