Tech Note: Latency and the Facebook Like Button

How to make Facebook notice your pages exist (a little sooner)
Technology • Views: 31,924

Here’s one of those tech notes that usually turns into an open thread, with some information that might be useful to other website monkeys.

While testing the Facebook Like button I noticed that there seems to be a latency problem somewhere in the mammoth Facebook hivemind. If the button is clicked shortly after a post appears at LGF, the number changes to ‘1’ but then immediately goes back to nothing, and the Like doesn’t appear at your Facebook Wall. After an undetermined amount of time, the button starts working properly, and the counter “sticks” instead of vanishing. To make it a little more frustrating, it doesn’t happen with every post.

While checking to see if there was something about LGF’s code that was causing this, I discovered Facebook’s URL Linter app, and plugged in the URL for one of the problem pages. It showed no errors. But wonder of wonders, the Like button that had been misbehaving suddenly started working.

Running the URL Linter must update whatever caches are not getting flushed, or whatever transaction isn’t being committed across their DB servers. I hope Facebook fixes this problem soon.

In the meantime, to make this process a bit easier I wrote a quick Javascript bookmarklet that does the Lint operation with one click, for whatever page is currently displayed in your browser. Here’s that bookmarklet, for anyone geeky enough to know what I’m talking about (install in the usual bookmarklet way):

URL Linter Bookmarklet.

Some posts have a bunch of clicks on the Google +1 button, but I notice that Facebook Like is getting much more traffic. I have a Google+ account set up, but I haven't used it very much yet.

I still use "facebook like" exclusively simply because it existed first and even when I like something, I'm still too apathetic to click two different buttons.

Here's why the GOP has to cave: "Raise the fucking debt limit!" says.....The Chamber of Commerce....
Congress hears outcry from business lobby on debt ceiling and deficit

The sternly worded letter demanding a rise in the debt limit marks a signficant shift in strategy by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Business Roundtable and other corporate leaders, who until now have remained largely mute as the standoff in Washington has propelled the country close to default.

The missive also poses a serious political challenge for Republicans, who rely heavily on corporate America for support but have balked at agreeing to revenue increases as part of a deal with Democrats. Many of the House GOP freshman who are most opposed to a compromise were swept into office with the help of financial support from the Chamber and other business interests.

In other words, now they can't even claim that they're looking out for business leaders, as those leaders have just demanded they cut a deal. The GOP's got no legs to stand and Obama knows it. Agreeing to McConnell's deal now would be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Democrats are traditionally really good at that, but I think in this case, Obama knows he's got the GOP leadership's balls in a vise, so he doesn't need to do anything except wait them out, especially now that the Chamber of Commerce is telling the GOP to get on with it and make a deal.

No, I don't think so. That was a pretty solid decision (7-2).

Worse, the plan as proposed runs into some other constitutional issues. It gives the president the Power of the Purse.

I really don't see this passing the Senate, however. At the same time, every time it gets explained it'll make the republicans look even more, well, childish.

Look at the plan.
President can say "I want the money."
Then either house gets to pass a bill refusing the money. But it's not really a bill since if either house refuses, president has to veto the refusal.
If vetoed, then both houses have to try to override the veto in the normal fashion.

Constitutional process? What constitutional process?

Democrats are traditionally really good at that, but I think in this case, Obama knows he's got the GOP leadership's balls in a vise, so he doesn't need to do anything except wait them out, especially now that the Chamber of Commerce is telling the GOP to get on with it and make a deal.

Apparently, the utter fail of the GOP gets better. Rep. Cantor has concluded that asking America's rich to contribute to paying down the debt is simply off the table, but asking America's students to pick up the tab is a-okay:

Cantor: Taxing The Rich Is Off The Table, But Making Students Pay More Immediately Is Fine

One of the major demands that almost all congressional Republicans have made about deficit reduction is that wealthier americans and large corporations shouldn’t have to pay any more in taxes. “The House has taken a firm position against anything having to do with increasing taxes or raising tax rates,” said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) at the onset of negotiations over the budget deficit in May.

Yet as the Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz reports, one group that Cantor is apparently fine with making pay more is American college students. Cantor, at the White House for budget negotiations, apparently proposed that students who take out student loans should immediately start paying interest, rather than getting to make payments after graduation:

As Monday’s White House budget talks got down to the nitty-gritty, Eric Cantor proposed a series of spending cuts, one of them aimed squarely at college students. The House majority leader, who did most of the talking for the Republican side, said those taking out student loans should start paying interest right away, rather than being able to defer payments until after graduation. It is a big-ticket item that would save $40 billion over 10 years.

According to Kurtz, Obama rejected Cantor’s proposal out of hand, saying that he didn’t want to “screw students.” Cantor’s proposal comes at a time when American students are already overwhelmed by student loan debt. In 2008, the average debt that a college student graduated with was a whopping $23,000. American students continue to pay more than most of their developed world neighbors for a college education, and Cantor apparently wants to make it even more difficult for them while not touching the richest Americans.

Pizza, wings, soda, and some sort of dessert. Problem solved.

But tots are warm and very, very filling, plus they'll take the edge off of the wings.

Okay, fine.

But promise me you'll do a big pan of brownies. If you get the mixes on sale, you can do a pan of brownies for under a dollar.

Nah, just good ol' Tataer Tot hotdish - hamburger, green beens, a little diced onion, cream of mushroom soup (use milk not water to mix with it) and a thick layer of tots.

Ketchup and/or cheese on the side as condiments.

SFC Leroy Petry, Army Ranger, awarded Medal of Honor

President Obama on Tuesday awarded the Medal of Honor to an Army Ranger for his courageous actions during combat in Afghanistan, only the second time since the Vietnam War that a living service member from an ongoing conflict has received the distinction.

Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry, now 31, was shot through both legs and lost his right hand after tossing aside a live grenade during a 2008 firefight in Afghanistan’s Paktia province. His body was also riddled with shrapnel, according to Army field reports, but his actions spared the lives of fellow Rangers.

There has been a huge change in the way companies run things now. When I first got into management, you worked 75 hours a week. Now they'll offer stock options and 60 hour work weeks. And going after GM's is smart. Outback went after an old GM of mine 20 years ago. Gave her managing partner status right away.

re: #130 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

As Monday’s White House budget talks got down to the nitty-gritty, Eric Cantor proposed a series of spending cuts, one of them aimed squarely at college students. The House majority leader, who did most of the talking for the Republican side, said those taking out student loans should start paying interest right away, rather than being able to defer payments until after graduation. It is a big-ticket item that would save $40 billion over 10 years.

1. If default rates are too high, raise the interest rate. Requiring payment during college defeats the whole purpose of student loans. I wonder whether Cantor actually wants to do away with the loans. If that's the case, he should say so and argue the issue on the merits.

2. There is something unlikable about Cantor that I can't put my finger on. His Wikipedia page says he is a preppie. That seems to be part of it.

Even one of his Republican constituents made a blog post describing him as an obnoxious bleeeep.

Yeah. I checked one. Some university looking for an executive chef. With a degree or certificate and plenty of experience. $15.54/hour. I don't know if that's good pay for that field or not. Sounds a bit low to me. I think a pro-anything should be making at least $25/hour.

Yeah. I checked one. Some university looking for an executive chef. With a degree or certificate and plenty of experience. $15.54/hour. I don't know if that's good pay for that field or not. Sounds a bit low to me. I think a pro-anything should be making at least $25/hour.

OMG, now that is some low pay. Why can't I find a decent cook?

re: #239 justaminute

I depends. Starting out is hard. Finding a stand alone operation is very hard. But you can find strip mall locations cheaper in OK. Especially one that was a restaurant before and you catch them before they auction off the equipment.

This was my last restaurant gig. Worked for the guy opening it for 5 years at his 1st place. He still uses my recipes and operational techniques.

re: #227 wlewisiii

Not very well, but a longer slower cooking, perhaps in a pan on the grill above the coals...

On a Weber I use charcoal rails and put a drip pan in the center. Then I add some chunks of soaking wet apple wood to the coals, put the lid on and close down the top and bottom vents about half way.

Here it is. It's temp too.

[Link: sfbay.craigslist.org...]

Not to exceed 15.54/hr. This is at Sonoma State University. It also involves training other people. It's for a "Cook II":

Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Executive Chef, the Cook II is responsible for the ordering, production, dispensing and monitoring of food items per a defined menu cycle. An emphasis is placed upon the production of quality products and services. The incumbent will prepare and cook soups, sauces, entrées, side dishes, desserts, and breads from both scratch and preprocessed foods; clean, sanitize and assist in the maintenance of culinary equipment; maintain clean and organized work areas based upon health and safety guidelines; participate in the instruction, training, and supervision of students in job skills, safety and sanitation; plan menus; maintain records; solve work problems; attend and participate in weekly staff meetings; ensure food safety by following health and safety guidelines based upon HACCP, Serve-Safe, and Sonoma County Health Department regulations; keep accurate records in connection with orders, production and time and temperature reporting; follow established procedures regarding the security of products, equipment and cash within the Dining Facility; and interact with students, staff, customers, and guests in a manner that promotes positive public relations. Based upon the needs of the Director of Dining Services, or their designee, the Cook II may perform other duties, as assigned, and as deemed necessary for the effective operation of University Dining Services. This may include assisting in the cleaning of faculties, reorganization of storage areas, and assisting in any open operation within Dining Services.

Duties take place mostly on the Cooks line. The Cook II position requires long periods of standing, working over a 350 degree surface, as well as other high temperature machinery. Early morning, swing or evening shifts may be required and will be specified by the supervisor to meet operational needs. Scheduling may include the working of holidays.

Qualifications
Requires the equivalent of one year of experience performing duties of a Cook I. Previous experience supervising and training unskilled and semiskilled workers is preferred. The incumbent must possess a working knowledge of producing food in varying quantities and adjusting recipes or methods to produce a quality product; ability to project and produce food quantities based upon customer counts; working knowledge of kitchen safety and sanitation based upon HACCP principles and Health Department Laws; and knowledge of food values as well as nutritional and economical substitutions within food groups and food accounting. The incumbent must possess the ability to keep organized, accurate records; utilize basic mathematic skills; prepare and cook all food groups and use the appropriate equipment; judge food quality; follow guidelines; plan work schedules; and prepare foods based upon an established menu. The incumbent is expected to pass both the Serve Safe examination, with a score of 85% or greater.

Whew.

While I was perusing the web about Mr. Bachmann's "gay cure," I went over to Powerline, and man, are they all twisted again about global warming. They mention a report by someone (I don't follow this issue as closely as I probably should, so forgive my ignorance) named Fred Singer. He's obviously with the "we got nothin' to do with it" camp of the issue. Anyone here know anything about Singer?

Your text to link...

S Fred Singer. Big name in development of weather satellites, Professor Emeritus of UVa's Environmental Science department. Got it right in saying the smoke from Iraq would not cause global cooling (in counter to Sagan).

On the other hand, became something of a corporate shill in the 1990s. He was a favorite for tobacco in his claims second hand smoke was not a problem. He founded the Science and Environmental Policy Project, a very anti-global warming (not just AGW, ANY GW) organization. the SEPP took its greatest credibility hit in 2007 when the details of the Great PR Blitz of 1998 came out. That was a multimillion coordinated news blitz coordinated between the SEPP, George C. Marshall Institute, and ExxonMobile. Follow-on claims that the meeting was a misrepresentation kept running into the fact the memo did exist, money was spent, and the agencies did perform as per the memo's discussion points.

(All that and more is in the Wiki article I linked.)

On Homeland security

I just went through airport security for the first time since 9/11. Yes, seriously. We had just moved up here to be close to family so we wouldn't have to fly to see them back in 2001, and there hasn't been any place we wanted to vacation that required flying until now. (For me, at least.)

Wow. The whole gray-bin thing was a trip. On the way back, my daughter's shoes were specially screened (not her, just her shoes, although I understand if they had flunked, she would have received attention.) I suppose, since she is The Princess, that glass slippers get special attention.

Ok, based on everyone's advice, my plan is to get up in the morning and dry rub with a spice mix, let sit till about noon, slow cook for a couple of hours at 350 with a little water for steam like CCA suggested, take out and let cool.

Then I'll cook up the sauce I found in a cook book that looks interesting,

Then about 60 minutes before the boss gets home, I'll put them on the grill and baste with that bourbon-brown sugar sauce.

Sound reasonable?

Yep sounds reasonable..... personally, I'd go 3-4 hours min at 250 degrees. Low and slow!

Okay, I finally did the thing I was avoiding.

I had to be decisive and place an order at my science supplies company. Being decisive is hard for me.

I just know that two days from now I'll think of something else I want. I could spend a ton of money in these kinds of places.

(For some odd reason I have a terrible time being decisive about little things, like orders and upholstery, and no problem at all being decisive about big things, like which college to attend and who to marry. Weird.)

Anyway, you will now all be spared my babbling, as I go and make dinner for the crew.

the shortest DMV line in Portland I've experienced is the DMV at Lloyd Center, nobody seems to know it exists, in and out with a license, picture taken, in minutes

The one in NE (82nd just north of I-84) is really good too, main rule is stay the hell away from the one on Powell!

In Virginia there's a five dollar fee for showing up at the DMV in person. Last time I had to go, I was in Martinsville, VA. So I went there (smaller town and all that).

I walked in there and hit the little computer thingy to get my number; as soon as I hit it; three tellers looked up. I was the only "customer" there.

They were so happy to see someone? They waived my fee.

She was charged with "aggravated mayhem." I guess there was nothing in the penal code for this particular crime.
