Dem. Janice Hahn Cruises to Victory in CA Special Election

Ugly right wing attack fizzles in California
Politics • Views: 29,909

The deranged, blatantly racist and sexist advertisement produced by wingnut loon Ladd Ehrlinger, Jr. to attack Democrat Janice Hahn in California’s special election didn’t help her Tea Party opponent: California special election: Janice Hahn cruises to solid victory.

Democrat Janice Hahn defeated Republican Craig Huey in a bitterly contested Southern California special election marked by stinging attacks from both sides.

Hahn finished with a healthy 54.56 percent of the vote to Huey’s 45.44 percent in Tuesday’s vote.

May it be a harbinger of the future.

Her margin wasn't that big, but the funniest part of this to me has been people talking about the black vote in this election-- and how the D's weren't getting as much of it as they should-- as a harbinger.

The district is one of the richest in the nation and one of the whitest in California. The black vote there is not representative of much elsewhere.

Also the fact that the turnout was much lower in the special election (as it always is). Tha will usually help the Republicans.

I wonder what the margin would have been if this was a regular election.

Oh I know. I'm always amused by the handwringing over The Black Vote™, e.g. CA-36, Prop 8. Usually, by people who don't know ANY Black people, much less Black people in CA.

That's a pretty slim margin considering the vehement racism of the campaign. I'm not surprised, really, but a 10 point lead in such a race doesn't inspire confidence.

I wish the damn UFOs would get their acts together and get the green and grey vote out.

Again, this is a special election. Turnout is different for them.

Good point. I'll take some solace in that thought.

Maybe we should try to raise money so that Ehrlinger will make *more* videos.

I didn't know Emily List was so cool! We use them all the time! (and get good discounts, too).

My money is better spent elsewhere.

Things my money would be better spent on:
1) burning in a fire for heat
2) as fabric for a suit
3) donations to the Church of Scientology
4) Guo Meimei Baby

BSkyB/News Corp deal collapses

Long-term investors in BSkyB will expect the pay-TV operator to return capital to increase the company's value after a phone-hacking scandal forced year-long suitor News Corp to abandon its bid.

Yea, It's more the fact that it was a special election more than anything else. I had no idea about the demographics of the district. I wonder if the same thing applies to some of the districts in the special run-off elections that were happening in WI recalls yesterday too. One was REALLY close, while others were way off, but the Dems won in them all in the end.

According to Nate Silver of the NYT blog "538," Ms. Hahn's victory and 9-point margin is unimpressive, given the district's much greater preference for Barack Obama in 2008 and general Democratic leanings. Her underperformance was almost as great at the overperformance by Jane Hochul in the New York congressional race. But she won, and I guess that's all that really counts.

re: #17 Obdicut

Then what explains Hochul's margin of victory and "beating the averages," even in what was also a special election?

Perhaps Hahn was a weak candidate. I don't know - I'm not a southern Californian.

What are you talking about? What explains that she didn't win by as much as she 'should'?

That the voters didn't like her a ton, I guess. I don't know much about her. Do you think it signifies something else, for some reason?

BTW, here's the link to the article by Nate Silver about how Hahn did not meet expectations for the district, even though she won.
A not-so-special performance for Democrats

Yes. Which is entirely true. She under-performed, by a lot.

Did you miss that this was already discussed, or what?
