Rachel Maddow: The Dangers of Sex with Demons

Whatever became of the separation of church and state?
Wingnuts • Views: 44,084

Rachel Maddow has a look at Texas Governor Rick Perry’s upcoming giant prayer rally “The Response,” and its schedule of unbelievably fanatical religious right crackpots. Fourteen minutes and six seconds of sheer lunacy.

I remember people really, really being outraged about REverend Wright. I'm not going to judge the rightness or wrongness of that. But I remember we had news cycle after news cycle about it. A lot of focus was given to the craziest statements.

All of the GOP field-- with the exception of Romney, who is, as typical, nowhere to be seen committing himself-- has ties to religious advisers or have made statements themselves that are as crazy or crazier than what Wright said.

And unlike Obama, they haven't repudiated them. They give them access and legitimacy.

I was just at my local Canadian Tire store looking through the doodads and thingies to put on my car to spruce it up a bit. I saw several Jesus fishes but no Darwin/Evolution fishes.

As atheists we're nothing but second class citizens.

Why am I getting a sudden desire to simply find some astro cult to join and get rocketed off this planet? To your question, I guess FoxNews is too busy not talking about Murdoch scandal to cover the words of the religious wingnuts that the current crop of pandering GOP candidates are openly catering to for the extreme wing of sheep, er, voters. It can't be that the point against Wright was just a onesided argument, right?

I would also think that Christians should be very afraid, particularly those who are not evangelists and more particularly, Catholics. I think they very much want to make all religions, even other Christian sects, outlawed. They're very vocal about Islam, and it's just downhill from there.

For me, the Rev. Wright crap was so annoying because it was so hypocritical. Yeah he said some crankodoodle stuff. All we heard about was "20 years at Trinity UCC" yet Palin/Joan of Arc's 20 years in whackjob Christianity like Wasilla Assembly of God didn't make the news, nor has Palin ever bothered to distance herself from it.

I did a piece on this at the time [Link: bit.ly...] . Turns out it's still relevant because a lot of the cranks in Perry's prayermongering conference are from that Apostolic Prayer Network, same as the clowns running around in the Wasilla AoG [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

I need some help from my fellow lizards.
I have no talent. I have no imagination (other than about zombies).

I've been neglecting my business the last few years and I'd like to turn that around by taking steps that include having a business card and a working website, but I need a logo.

Some of you have talent dripping from your pores and I'd like to tap into that ooze just cause we're like lizards together and stuff.

The name of the company is Reboot Computers.
If you have any ideas/drawings I'd love to here/see them.

I have no design talent. However, there are people who do, and they are attending a graphic design course at a college near you. Check in with department heads of graphic design departments and see if the students are interested in working on your logo/business card. Cheaper than professionals, often more creative.

Whoops, Minnesotans wont be able to imbibe Miller-Coors beverages because the company didn't get its license in before the state shut down.

MillerCoors, the second largest brewer in the United States, failed to get its brand license to sell 39 brands in Minnesota renewed before a government shutdown over a budget impasse began with the new fiscal year on July 1.

"Without that brand label registration, their distribution and sales aren't allowed to continue," Doug Neville, a state public safety department spokesman, said.

The registration allows the manufacturing, distribution and sales of the MillerCoors brands in the state, meaning that they would also have to be pulled from liquor stores, bars and restaurants where they are sold, Neville said.

"We reached out to MillerCoors to talk to them about their brand label registration being expired and requested from them a plan to discontinue distribution and sales of their products in the state," Neville said. "We are hoping within a couple of days to have a clear idea what that looks like."

Samuel Adams brewer Boston Beer Co Inc's registration is good until the end of the year, according to a company spokeswoman. Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev did not have an immediate comment.

MillerCoors spokesman Julian Green said on Wednesday the company was working with the state to resolve the situation.

"With 39 brands at stake in one of our largest markets in the country during the most important selling period, in the summer, we do not take the business of ensuring proper state licenses lightly," Green said.

Green said MillerCoors had filed paperwork to renew the three-year brand licenses by the June 13 due date, actually overpaying initially, and submitted a second check by June 27. The renewal was never issued and neither check was processed, he said.

The renewal fees amount to $30 per brand, or $1,170. MillerCoors' beers range from Miller Lite and Coors Light to Blue Moon, Peroni and Pilsner Urquell.

Minnesotans imbibe 31.3 gallons of beer annually.

I would laugh and laugh and laugh if something uniquely natural and catastrophic happened, like a meteor followed by hundreds of lightning strikes, individually targeting speakers on the stage as they speak.

God, if you exist, THIS is how you convince me.

Now, I am not a guy who is super respectful of religion in general, so correct me if i'm wrong, but... Isn't the stuff they are saying in the video almost the exact polar opposite of Jesus' teachings?

If they are looking for the opposite of christ (i.e., the antichrist), and the whore of babylon, they may not have very far to look.

I think the whackjob to sane translation of this whole thing is:

"They" (the libruhs who hate Jesus) want to create an all-inclusive, morally relative religion with no concept of right and wrong. They will use all these good deeds to convince people to join this movement and therefore "turn away from Christ" losing salvation. When Christianity is dead, then... ITS A TRAP!!11!!ONE!!11!

Human sacrifice... Dogs and cats living together.... MASS HYSTERIA!!!ONE!!111eleven

I'm sure some things were lost in the translation though.

This guy is walking down the street when he hears a voice from a dark alley. "Hey buddy - I got something special here. Check it out..."
Guy goes into the alley, and the man there shows him a box. "I got a frog in this box. Bet frog in the world. You know why? Because it will give you a blowjob you won't ever forget. And because I am hard-up, it's yours for 20 buck". So the guy thinks for a moment, and realizess that for $20, at least it's a great story. He takes the frog home and puts the box under his side of the bed. He can't sleep, and finally takes the frog out of the box...

In the middle of the night, his wife wakes up to find him in the kitchen, with pots and pans and mixing bowls out and the frog on the counter watching him. She says "wtf are you doing in the kitchen in the middle of the night with a goddamned FROG?"
To which he says... "sshhh... Honey if I can teach this frog to cook, you're outta here."

240 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Wed, Jul 13, 2011 1:12:40pm

Rick Perry betrays a great American principle

The secular constitution of the United States, so clearly and farsightedly laid down by the Founding Fathers, is one of the glories of the Enlightenment, and the envy of many (including in my own country of Britain). It was designed – with good contemporary reason – to protect the religious against oppression by other religions, and it is astonishing that such a historic treasure needs vigilant defense against undermining from within – from historically illiterate politicians.

One could hardly imagine a more calculated insult to the Founding Fathers than Governor Perry’s statement. His remark would have been unconstitutional even if he had merely asked the nation to call upon God. Calling upon Jesus compounds the error by adding an affront to American Jews, Muslims and Hindus, to say nothing of the growing population of agnostics and atheists who outnumber all three of them put together. Suppose a Muslim American happened to be elected to a governorship and said, “As a nation, we must come together and call upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to guide us through unprecedented struggles . . .”

It's a wonderful read and still a primer for doctors today who deal with the terminally ill.

We often step all over ourselves in dealing with dying people, not knowing what to say or do. Or worse, just ignoring it (or them) because we feel so uncomfortable with the experience. Been there, done that too many times. The book was an incredible help.

There's an article in a recent issue of the New Yorker magazine (June 13 and 20) by Aleksander Hemon, recounting his experience of having lost his little daughter Isabel to brain cancer.

It's not easy for those outside the story to grasp how awful things really are, for the patient and their loved ones. Platitudes, assurances of an afterlife, inquiries into how things are going that cannot possibly be sincere, etc. are not welcome.

And consider how difficult it is for such an inquiry to be sincere. Who wants to hear, truly, the agony of another mortal?

My brother in law died recently of cancer; visits from friends and family, just to be there and say hello [and goodbye] were welcome. If concrete help or information regarding side issues is requested, by all means come through on it. But there isn't any recipe. Death comes to us all, but it comes early and painfully to some, and friends and even relatives can only do so much. It''s just tough.

Nodding, hugging and making as many memories as you can with your friend. If he wants to talk, let him talk and listen. If he doesn't want to talk, then don't. Play games together if he isn't mobile, or just hang and watch TV. Bring favorite snacks, if he an eat. Your company alone is a great gift.

What I found most upsetting when my father was dying was that everyone became a philosopher. They knew best and I know they weren't doing it to hurt me, but it was incredibly irritating.

Quite frankly, the experience can be very uplifting, particularly knowing that you're doing an incredible service to someone and I personally think the most important service anyone can do.

No such thing as being able to separate sick perverted deeply held religious beliefs and being able to govern fairly and with careful thought. These people are disgusting scumbags.

Question: are religious beliefs, of their very nature qua religious beliefs, sick and perverted?

Was Abraham Lincoln sick and perverted? James Madison? William Wilberforce?

All these men failed to separate their deeply held religious beliefs from their political lives. From all I can see, that improved their ability to govern fairly and with careful thought.

I'm not much of a believer, but I can see merit in the political lives of many a believer out of history, and trace it back to his/her beliefs.

I think it is possible to differentiate between an individual having a spiritual conviction that what s/he is doing i correct, and imposing the system that led to that belief on others. The idea I thought was enshrined in the constitution is that we all have a right to find and pursue our own path to spiritual enlightenment. Or not to follow that path at all.

The 10th time I heard "He's in a better place" I couldn't contain myself. "No, his better place would have been with me." And I immediately regretted saying it. People don't mean harm. I know that, but arrrghhh.....

But anyway, it's nice that you're thinking about how to deal with it :) It's not something you generally get a lot of experience with.

I have a close friend who has just been told that his cancer has come back. There are no mainstream therapies left, and he is now living the last bit of his life; he has not told me how long he has, and I don't know how much of what is left will be of any particularly quality.

Can anyone recommend a useful resource (book, hotline, whatever) that can provide guidance on how to be supportive and a good friend without falling into common traps (being maudlin, asking the wrong questions, etc.)?

And he is just 52 fucking years old.

lots of good responses. I've been there with a very close friend of around the same age. Let him take the lead on what to talk about, and be there without judgment. I never read a book during that time and in the end he requested me to be there when they pulled life support. Prepare yourself for a hard journey. My lesson from my friend is that life is too short for games. I think I learned more from him than any book...good luck to both of you.

Man's leg severed by freight train in SE Portland

A man hit by a Union Pacific freight train was found carrying his severed left leg when police arrived at the scene late Monday night.

Investigators said Central Precinct officers were called to the railroad tracks near Southeast Stark Street and Water Avenue around 11:30 p.m. When officers and paramedics arrived, they found 23-year-old James Piles conscious and carrying his own leg, investigators said.

Piles told officers he had been smoking marijuana earlier and did not hear the train approaching when he was struck, severing the lower part of his left leg, investigators said.

New York congressman Peter King, the first Republican politician to call for a probe into the scandal, sent a letter to FBI director Robert Mueller over the allegations that the News of the World bribed a New York police officer to gain access to the private phone records of 9/11 victims. He wrote:

It is revolting to imagine that members of the media would seek to compromise the integrity of a public official for financial gain in the pursuit of yellow journalism.

The 9/11 families have suffered egregiously, but unfortunately they remain vulnerable against such unjustifiable parasitic strains. We can spare no effort or expense in continuing our support for them.

For the record, Pete King is an embarrassment to New York. I've never found him to be on the right side of any issue, and I'm astounded that he's even opened his mouth about Fox.

King better be careful, though - he appear a lot on Fox, and this may jeopardize his face time.

In a masterful bit of understatement, Feinstein blamed "noticeably subpar" food and service. Foot traffic bears that out. Come lunchtime, many Senate staffers trudge across the Capitol and down into the basement cafeteria on the House side. On Wednesdays, the lines can be 30 or 40 people long.

1. First, I'd ensure that members of my extended family could stop worrying about $ and put their kids through college.

2. Then I'd peel off 1% so I could live "carefree" (and optimally medicated) during the year.

3. The rest I'd donate to underfunded scientific efforts: possibly including, but not restricted to, high-profile ones. For example, botanists are working to recreate resistant strains of the North American chestnut tree.

4. It would take longer than the time available to make a confident allocation to charitable and political causes. I'd be inclined to make an exception for the Salvation Army.
