Tech Note: Improvements to LGF Pages

Subtitles, sharing, bug fixes
LGF • Views: 31,066

There are some new features in LGF Pages, our simple but powerful blogging system for registered users:

1) Pages now have all the same sharing tools as LGF front page articles; a Facebook Like button, a Google +1 button, a retweet button for Twitter, and a “Share” button that pops up a list of other social network sites. When you post a Page, don’t forget to share it on Facebook or Twitter if you use those sites. Coming soon: you’ll be able to link your LGF account to your Twitter account, and automatically post a tweet whenever you post a new Page.

2) Now you too can master the art of the snarky aside, with our new “subtitle” feature. (It’s optional, of course; you can leave it blank if you are devoid of snark.)

There are some small bug fixes as well, and a workaround for that Facebook Like button problem I described a couple of days ago.

To post LGF Pages, all you need is an LGF account, which you can get by registering here.

Once you register, check out the right sidebar in the main LGF Pages index for links to these helpful articles and more info:

Out of curiousity I clicked the register "here" link - it appears to just be the main page of LGF? Or does something different happen if you aren't currently logged in to an account?

Thanks for implementing my subtitle suggestion Charles.

Way way cool!
Charles, this "pages" feature is a great gift to all of us!
I've enjoyed using it as well as looking at what other folks have posted.

5 Political Atheist  Thu, Jul 14, 2011 2:48:42pm

Better and better. When you get there-I promise to be an early adopter of the twitter account link. My twitter account is only used for sharing my pages and photography updates anyway.

Have they helped you with the tweet stats problem?

6 Charles Johnson  Thu, Jul 14, 2011 2:50:56pm

I just realized that anyone with a Twitter account can already automatically tweet their Pages -- if you use something like Twitterfeed.

Your pages have their own RSS address -- just use that for Twitterfeed, and your new Pages will automatically go up on Twitter. If you wanna.

(I'm still going to add the linked account feature though -- it's smoother and doesn't require a 3rd party service.)

9 RanchTooth  Thu, Jul 14, 2011 2:53:36pm

I love the new subtitle feature. Kinda caught me off guard when I was posting my page, but I recognized it's snark-factor immediately. Thanks Charles!

Politico: Marine inquiry faults Bradley Manning treatment

The commander of the Marine base where Wikileaks suspect Pvt. Bradley Manning was jailed for nearly 10 months ordered an inquiry into his treatment and then overruled one of the investigator’s findings, Marine Corps documents obtained by POLITICO show.

A special investigation determined that Manning’s jailers violated Navy policy by keeping him on suicide watch after psychiatrists concluded he was not a threat to himself, but the commander rejected that conclusion, according to the documents.

I am totally disgusted by the media hyena pack drooling over every sick detail of the Kletzky murder. NY Post, NY Daily News and the whole Murdoch gang, it's SOP for them, but the ultra-Orthodox blogs like Vos Iz Neias are all Kletzky, all the time.

I mean, how can you explain the media saying "the police want to spare the family the gruesome details" and then competing with each other to spill every last gruesome detail.

Now this has reminded me of other horrific crimes going back 30 years, the details of which I now totally remember.

At a time when Rupert Murdoch's whole news organization is in deep international trouble for ethics violations and possibly criminal activity, it takes real chootzpah (to use Michele Bachmann's term) to attempt this ultra-lame spin.

And of course, they can't do this stuff without being dishonest at some point: Emails Show White House Aides Venting About Fox News.

In its summation, Judicial Watch also includes a seemingly damning quote from communications aide Josh Earnest, "We've demonstrated our willingness and ability to exclude Fox News from significant interviews..." but omits the rest: "... -- but yesterday, we didn't."

DNA Results of the International Commission on Missing Persons Reveal the Identity of 6,186 Srebrenica Victims
Article posted on July 9, 2009

Through the use of DNA identity testing, the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) has revealed the identity of 6,186 persons missing from the July 1995 fall of Srebrenica, by analyzing DNA profiles extracted from bone samples of exhumed mortal remains and matching them to the DNA profiles obtained from blood samples donated by relatives of the missing. The overall high matching rate between DNA extracted from these bone and blood samples leads ICMP to support an estimate of close to 8,100 individuals missing from the fall of Srebrenica.

---

And more recently:

[Link: www.ic-mp.org...]

Of the 13,541 persons DNA identified in the context of BiH, 6,594 were DNA identifications of persons missing from the 1995 fall of Srebrenica.

Hugo Chávez declares his support for Muammar Gaddafi

[On Thursday, February 24, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez declared his support for his fellow petrodollar populist and social democratic nationalist, Muammar Gaddafi. With this declaration, a controversy and debate among supporters of Venezuela and more broadly among "Third World Marxists" has opened up. And Chavez' encouragement and support for Gaddafi has undoubtedly prolonged and intensified the attacks on Libya's rebellious and revolutionary people.

Revolutionary and anti-imperialist people everywhere are challenged by these events, and are struggling to understand how the people's movement for national independence a half-century ago became dominated and controlled by such a powerful bourgeois figure as Gaddafi, who in the last decade has proven to be an imperialist tool and an enemy of the people.

Victory to the people of Libya! Down with Gaddafi! Imperialism--Keep your hands off Libya! -- Frontlines ed.]

I had a roommate once (many years ago) whose father had a prosthetic leg.

He and his wife took a trip somewhere once, and for some reason he had removed the leg and he left it on the bed.

Meanwhile, the hotel maid entered the room to clean, and saw the leg, screamed and fainted.

So Steve - when you get that leg . . . be careful where you leave it laying around. mmmkay?

This is actually a handy little bit of PHP code -- it goes through an arbitrary string of text, finds HTML tags, and puts quotes around any unquoted attributes those tags contain.

It's a little tricky to encode the whole process in one regular expression, so I use a 'while' loop to do each unquoted attribute in turn. Not the most efficient way to do it, but for LGF comments that are limited in length it works just dandy.

They don't really like each other, but they aren't having any major tension. But Pakistan sees India as its major threat and as long as that is the mindset of its generals, they are unlikely to deploy their military to the Iranian border in large numbers. The Pakistani military's (badly flawed) strategic calculus means that Pakistan is unlikely to cause Iran much trouble.

re: #351 ProLifeLiberal

OT, but I've been thinking about this for a little while.

I think there may be another reason the Iran wants Nukes. I know in the past that Pakistan and Iran haven't gotten along. What about right now?

Pakistan isn't about to attack Iran, with nukes or with conventional weapons. Iran is no threat to Pakistan, nor Pakistan to Iran. Pakistan has worries on its Eastern border, and domestic trouble in its western frontier provinces. The notion that Iran needs nukes to deter Pakistan is just cracked.

Neither side has any prospects of gaining something from a conventional war. The terrain between their respective heartlands is too harsh for either to really win. So the war, once begun, would just drag on. Like the Iran-Iraq war did, only worse.

Both nations have leadership that can see that. So there won't be a conventional war.

A nuclear attack out of the blue, by Pakistan, is unthinkable. It's much too dangerous. Pakistan has enemies, one of them nuclear. Iran has friends, at least one of them nuclear. And even if the war didn't escalate, Pakistan would be the target of embargoes, sanctions, and so forth.

One may as well worry about whether Hungary needs nukes to defend her fishing waters from Bolivian trawlers.

My sister owned an Arabian and a 1/4 horse and represented our province in the nationals in the under 18 group. You could see in the muscles of the Arabian how race horses developed.

A friend who is not a full-time equestrian bought an Arabian Colt with intentions to breed.

I told him he was frakkin' nuts.

Having grown-up in Detroit in the '70, I do understand the "other" side of racism. Somehow it is always justified.

I think that is why I have such a hard time with labels. I have to look at each person as an indivudual with a soul and can't let the bigotry I grew-up with carry into my adulthood.

Thanks. That's honestly one of the differences between us. While I do that for the people I actually get to know, when it comes to criminals I label deliberately, since I want to see them as a hostile mass and not as actual people.

I understand that. I was trying to make a point that there are differing kinds of crimes that stack the deck against certain groups. We don't weight non-violent white collar crimes, even if they are theft, the same way we do common theft that may have violence associated with it. The type of crime is determined by social and economic position, not by arbitrary differences in groups of people.

I agree with you that certain types of crimes are weighted differently, and that there are individual cases where the weighting is out of balance.

Likely. And of course you know, I am anti-death-penalty, so I don't think it's ever an appropriate sentence in any case.

The point, however - is that people do bad things; and many who reflect on it can come to a point in their lives where they are indeed rehabilitated. Which tells me their debt to "society" has been paid.

I don't know how I would feel if it was my family member who was murdered. The grief would be with me always. But I don't believe I could hang onto the anger for so long that his release after all this time would give me any grief.

Boston Baroque does good period instrument recordings. A great place to start with Bach is their take on the famous 6 Brandenburg Concertos. Then branch out the various other delights he wrote over his life. I've said this before, but when I'm listening to one of the Cantatas I feel like he forgot more about the divine than 99% of the world ever knows.

Not period (not by a long shot) but a valuable learning experience is to listen to both recordings of the Goldberg Variations by Glen Gould from each end of his career (1955 & 1981).

People would go to a meeting with him, and come out thinking that he had agreed with everything they said. The majority of crimes are property crimes without violence, and most violent crimes are common assault in domestic circumstances. There are very few cases, relatively speaking, where death or severe injury results yet because the majority of those violent crimes occur in areas stricken with poverty, which in our society are mostly non-whites, even people belonging to those groups who do not perpetrate violent crimes are viewed the same as those guilty of violence.

Yet there have been white-collar crimes that have caused suicides, which we do not class as violence.

I've mentioned this before, but I recall the 40th anniversary edition of Rolling Stone, they had all these fantastic interviews in it.

The one of Jimmy Carter (sorry) stuck with me because he talked about how Governors used to brag to each other about their rates of rehabilitation of prisoners, and how that isn't a factor anymore. Very very sadly.

It's a business now, to the detriment of society imo.

re: #479 b_sharp

As mentioned earlier, should the justice system be about punishment and retribution, or about protecting society through decreased recidivism and prevention?

Is that not an eternal question?

Frankly, I think there are people society just does not need to feed --John Wayne Gacy etc.

Others, need to be rehabbed if possible. But by the time they are in the prison system, it is very often too late. Again, why do we need to spend resources on these individuals, who have proven to be career criminals without any desire to contribute to society?

If we could get every person going thru the system to be at the very least proficient readers, we might have a way to decreased recidivism.

Certain crimes I have no sympathy for: murder, rape, child molestation, Bernie Madoff.

I think I tend to categorize the criminal by THOSE WHO SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER and didn't behave and those who were hopelessly lost in the system.

Those who should have known better I wouldn't waste a dime on, the others I'd see what could be done.

There are also crimes I think are stupid. Many of the "drug" crimes for example.

I'm still reading but if she helped in a burglary and as a result of that crime a cop police officer was killed, then yes she should go to prison for life. But with this case its not so cut-and-dry. Given the circumstances of her interrogation, I think that at least the first taped session should have been excluded as evidence. But as for the second, it might have hanged her anyway. It's true she made some serious mistakes in telling the story she did, but that's not the ADA's problem.

Focusing on protection of society would include permanent incarceration of those considered 'dangerous offenders' (a Canuck legal concept) as part of the prevention paradigm. That said we need to be rational and pragmatic in how we evaluate each case.

Politics is too much a part of the equation, IMHO. Too much money involved as well, rational and pragmatic is a difficult goal.

To say nothing of the fact that we are dealing with human beings. And when a decision is being made by an elected official, politics cannot help but enter the equation.
