Talking to a British guy on TVTropes. He's saying that the chance of government collapse in Britain has certainly risen, though it has been high for a few months.

The Cameron Government may be claimed by this scandal. I have no clue how the Republican Party would be affected.

How's life this Friday evening?

Had a solid week.

Organized a meeting between a local police officer and homeless youth concerning recent changes to trespass law and managed to solicit nearly 100 dollars in pizza to feed everyone.

Not so much luck on the job front though. @I%@#(%

Murdoch admits 'I've let my father down' as he makes emotional apology to Milly's family

Pressure grew on his son James Murdoch, chairman of News Corporation, over ‘hush money’ payments he approved to phone hacking victims.

Hacking, bribes and now hush money. I'm trying to think of this objectively. If an American car manufacturer (or any other company) did this in Europe they'd be fucked. Maybe an oil company can get away with this in Africa but this is an American company fucking around with Europe. Murdoch's toast.

It depends.

If just the umbrella (NewsCorp) goes down, then it's what you described. But we know that some of the undergroups will fall - see NotW for now, and there's noise about The Sun. Hinton's resignation opens DowJones (Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Dow Jones Indexes, etc) to the possibility of investigation and closure/revision.

It won't stop them, but there's the possibility of them having to spend a decade or three regrouping. Given the number of things they're opposing that would suddenly be unblocked...

Again, it depends on which fall and how severely they fall.

I want vengeance. Maybe if the News Corp in the US is implicated, the Liberals in the US will grow a spine and counter the Republicans, and call them out in the most brutal ways possible.

From what I read Machlan was the first/favored son and he left because of Ailes.

Was being the key word there. And he disagreed with his father politically, as well.

I want the satisfaction that they lose something valuable to them.

Question is, then what happens?

I'm not arguing with you, I'm just saying, ex: they lost legalized segregation and are losing legalized antigay discrimination. Look at them seething in the tea party, now.

I'm hoping this wipes out Fox News.

The anger and hatred I have would disappear if they lose the news channel.

I'm starting to think that's a very likely possibility. If nothing else, they were paying a lot of hush money, bribes and hackers which were not properly accounted for on their books. Fraud, illegal accounting, and probably tax evasion will sink them even if the allegations of hacking 9-11 victims doesn't pan out.
As the investigation progresses there is going to be some jail time, people are going to start talking. We're going to learn a lot more about the inner workings of the Murdoch empire. Outlets like the Wall Street Journal can probably be salvaged but I think Fox is going to be too damaged for even the Koch Brothers to bother with.

I agree with that, though it reminds me of the fall of both the Moral Majority and Christian Coalition. Those groups are just shells of what they were, but a billion more have taken their place.

Some of the front page stories Charles has posted in recent days have been about the whackjob Christian right. None of what they are doing is new and has been around for at least 30 years. If F'ed Noise falls you could be right about them taking a decade to regroup. But I just think all those whackos will be folded into the next big rwnj thing.

Murdoch admits 'I've let my father down' as he makes emotional apology to Milly's family

Hacking, bribes and now hush money. I'm trying to think of this objectively. If an American car manufacturer (or any other company) did this in Europe they'd be fucked. Maybe an oil company can get away with this in Africa but this is an American company fucking around with Europe. Murdoch's toast.

Boo fucking hoo. Murdoch would gladly have kept the hush money going had the whole repulsive mess not come to light.

Talking to a British guy on TVTropes. He's saying that the chance of government collapse in Britain has certainly risen, though it has been high for a few months.

The Cameron Government may be claimed by this scandal. I have no clue how the Republican Party would be affected.

The GOP won't be hit directly. If worse comes to worse, they'll throw Fox News under the bus. The hit would be indirect, as the Republican party would lose a major outlet to its base.

No. Not good enough.

Since High School I have had my character questioned, been called a traitor, been called a Nazi, ridiculed or saying evolution is fact, and other mistreatment just for being a Liberal. I remember all of it.

I want vengeance. Maybe if the News Corp in the US is implicated, the Liberals in the US will grow a spine and counter the Republicans, and call them out in the most brutal ways possible.

No, you shouldn't want that. You can start that kind of hate campaign fairly easily, but stopping it won't be so easy. Moreover, you'd force sane people like me and my friends and family to make common cause with the wingnuts out of pure political self-defense.

Don't force me into a corner like that, PLL. If you do, things will get worse, far worse. Is your revenge worth civil war?

You wouldn't be forced to do so, Dark. You'd be making a free choice that your political allegiance is more important than morals, ethics, or your country.

You've already made common cause with the wingnuts, from what I've seen. The Republicans as a whole, have.

Not hardly. If you're committed to one side, you can't just jump ship. In doing so I'd have to give up on a whole array of issues that are important to me and I don't want to do that. Moreover, I think that PLL's anger clouds his judgement and I don't think things will actually get to the point I described.

I hope not, but some influential strategists on both sides are trying to get things to that point. IMHO the plan is to make politics so...dionysian...that the average citizen has no choices except picking an extreme or not participating.

This isn't at all true. There are no actual sides. You're completely allowed to keep the issues that are important to you without giving up on them. I have no idea why you think stopping supporting the GOP and their current lunacy involves giving up anything.

Moreover, I think that PLL's anger clouds his judgement and I don't think things will actually get to the point I described.

Things are already at that point from the GOP point of view. They already launch attacks of that sort on Democrats. They already are attacking the president of the US in that manner.

It's kind of disgraceful, and has been for quite awhile.
