Tech Note: LGF Connect Becomes a Mini-Twitter Client

Post to Twitter with Ajax without pop-up windows
LGF • Views: 30,855

Now that we have the infrastructure for the linking of LGF accounts to Twitter accounts, we have another new feature to announce: our retweet buttons (at the top right of each post) now use the LGF Connect app to post your tweet directly on Twitter, using Ajax instead of pop-up windows.

To use this new feature, you need to allow LGF Connect to access your Twitter account (which you can do in your Account Settings), as described in this post from yesterday.

(If your accounts aren’t linked yet, when you click the retweet button you’ll see the old, dull, boring Twitter pop-up window, as usual.)

Our retweet dialog box is pretty simple:

As with Twitter’s own posting window, there’s a counter that shows how many characters you have remaining, as you type.

Note: this Ajax feature can also be used to tweet anything at all. You don’t have to retweet an article or LGF Page; you can clear the default text and type whatever you like, and it will be sent to Twitter with your account, via LGF Connect. So at this stage, we now have a bare-bones Twitter client. Groovy.

I was flipping channels last night and stopped for a minute to watch the helicopter cam follow a car down a freeway, wondering what it was about. The commentator said that Casey had just been released and then said "we don't know if she's in that car or not" as the 'copter keeps its camera glued to it. I'm thinking why the heck are y'all following that car if you don't know who's in it? Never did get an answer to that.

From the page:

Phone-hacking is deplorable, and we assume the guilty will be prosecuted. More fundamentally, the News of the World's offense—fatal, as it turned out—was to violate the trust of its readers by not coming about its news honestly.

Ah. So that's worse than the actual crimes. Okely dokely.

You know, at first I thought that WSJ and Fox should be covering this scandal. But if this is the crap we have to hear then I'd rather they went back to turning a blind eye.

I found this in an Article about the issues in the Muslim Brotherhood:

The heady post-Mubarak mood in Egypt, where two-thirds of its 80 million people are under the age of 30, has buoyed younger activists like Lotfy who have been at the forefront of Egypt’s political transition for months. By contrast, Lotfy says the Brotherhood’s powerful leaders—many in their 70s and 80s—will keep “doing things the same way for the rest of their lives.”

The Muslim Brotherhood is going to be having issues.

From the page:

Ah. So that's worse than the actual crimes. Okely dokely.

You know, at first I thought that WSJ and Fox should be covering this scandal. But if this is the crap we have to hear then I'd rather they went back to turning a blind eye.

Several years ago, a company you've heard of that I might or might not have worked for at some point found itself in a fairly minor scandal. The CEO at the time was awaiting trial for his 3rd or 4th DWI, and one of the local papers started nosing around. To make a long, stupid story short, the reporter discovered that the CEO had lied about his education on his resume. A comparatively minor shit-storm ensued, and the CEO was soon replaced (after collecting a 7-figure going-away present, of course).

As a result of this, IT policy changed company-wide, such that all user data like emails, documents, spreadsheets, lolcats, etc., stored on company servers gets nuked after xx days. No ifs, ands, or buts. The reason for the policy is that the company wants a degree of plausible deniability in the event documents are subpEEnerd. Sorry, Deputy Fife. We'd love to comply with your search warrant, but we threw that shit away months ago. Good luck with your investigation.

I'm not sure I even had a point, but if I did it was probably this: I {might have} witnessed first-hand how a huge corporation deals with a minor scandal, and from that I can extrapolate how things might be going for the people working at a far larger corporation, under far more dire circumstances. Of course, I have no evidence other than that which I've pulled out of my ass (metaphorically, mind you) but this makes me at least as qualified as any American news agency at this point.

The legal squadron at Fox News and the WSJ have probably decreed that nobody can say shit about shit, on pain of being asked by Jules Winfield to describe what Marsellus Wallace Rupert Murdoch looks like. Even if they're 100% in the clear, they are in CYA DEFCON-5.

Or so I suspect.

Never mind.

What's it about?

In a nutshell..... it's about a sweet little (Hasid?) boy deciding that his family needs to take him to the Dead Sea for vacation......

They swim and then there is a call to prayer? Dad leaves son alone because he's having trouble putting on his shoe...... son has collected a fresh water fish (a little one) and it spills out of the bag headed for certain death in the salty Dead Sea....... son goes after it.

After prayer no one can find the kid....... mom was on another beach because females weren't allowed on that beach with the males. The search team arrives and allows mom to enter the beach..... and they find his body.

Dad says to mom...... I was praying, how could you ask me to stop? Mom says he would have never been out of my sight.

Mom cries on the Sabbath..... dad says you can't do that.

The ending has mom totally rejecting dad's (who was a Rabbi) ideas and pushes holy books on his head from the second story as he preys.

They hope to enroll in college, and intend to dedicate themselves to making medical marijuana legal in all 50 states."

Meanwhile, they’ll keep growing up. Impressive as their transformation has been, for instance, their views on World War II still bear traces of the Holocaust denial ideology they were taught as children. For instance, asked whether the Holocaust happened, Lynx replied, “I think certain things happened. I think a lot of the stories got misconstrued. I mean, yeah, Hitler wasn’t the best, but Stalin wasn’t, Churchill wasn’t. I disagree with everybody at that time.”

Israeli films have such a reputation of portraying the religious (both Hasidim and national religious) as such venomous and evil characters (while at the same time portraying the Palestinians as dainty and helpless victims), that some Orthodox Jews have started their own production companies. Rudy Giuliani On Gay Marriage: Republican Party Should 'Get The Heck Out Of People's Bedrooms'

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani warned the Republican party to “move on” from its opposition to gay marriage in an interview with Candy Crowley on CNN's “State of the Union” Sunday.

“I think that marriage should be between a man and woman,” Giuliani said, “but I think that the Republican Party would be well advised to get the heck out of people's bedrooms and let these things get decided by states.”

Giuliani said he thinks the decision by the New York state Senate to allow same-sex marriages was “wrong,” but he said “there are other things that I think are wrong that get decided by democratic vote.”

“And now,” he said, “we should move on.”

As a non-Orthodox viewer I would tend to support Alouette's view--there is a tendency for Israeli filmmakers to make these devastating indictments of religion. I think it partly reflects the tensions between the religious and non-religious communities, and partly, I think, some of these guys have figured out that they love this stuff at Cannes.

It's odd how judgmental people who support pot use can be about other people's choices. I like alcohol. I like it perhaps too much. I don't need another recreational drug, let alone one that's expensive, illegal, and more complex to get, because I have chardonnay. So, with a couple of exceptions, I have let pot strictly alone. Depends who you are talking about. Very few simple users (of grass) are sitting in jail, and if you think the dealers don't have crack in one pocket, grass in another and heroin up their ass and are innocent souls who should be put right back on the street; then you are seriously mistaken and/or naive.

I don't like the smell, I don't like the smoke, and I don't like the culture that goes with it.

You'd think people would accept this. It is weird, the number of conversations I've had with people who think that turning down a joint is some sort of moral failing.

Turning it down isn't a failing, but in terms of lethal dosage it is in no way comparable with alcohol.

If one doesn't work, maybe two will . . . . .

I've built up a resistance. Two is the minimum if I need pain relief. If I've had surgery, I get the prescription filled for 4 pills. Two so I can sleep that night and Two so I can sleep the next night. I can't sleep while in pain and I won't heal if I can't sleep.

Actually, I could just go back to the pharmacy and get the rest of the script filled. I've asked the doctors to write it for only 4, but they don't seem to be able to do that. It's always 30 with 2 refills. Even tho I tell them I have "issues" with addictive substances.

But you were in a lot of pain. I find there is a relation to the pain and the high. The drug eats up the pain, as you heal and experience less pain, while still taking the same dose, the high get's greater. Then tolerance starts to happen and you need more of the drug to maintain the high. Not having it produces withdrawal pain, and so on . . .

That was sort of where my grandmother was, although she never stopped drinking at any time. She also tells a tale of how, at some point in the recovering from the lupus flare of, on too many drugs to count, she had a pleasant conversation with her father--the first normal discussion they'd had in weeks--and then ruined it for him by asking, politely, what his name was again.

From my own experience, I'd say that the medical profession is too much inclined to offer more than enough rather than a bit less than enough in the way of pain control medications.

If I hadn't long since got a stubborn streak and a determination not to be controlled, I might have taken all the stuff given me, figuring they know best. Instead, I figured that stuff is more dangerous than the relief it gave was worth, and put it aside. Pain is overrated, especially when it will eventually pass on its own.

And then, there was the guy who owned a rust bucket of a car that ran loud and shitty, and had to be started over and over and over again before the engine would run for more than a few seconds. He parked just under my bedroom window, and would start with this bullshit at 4AM.

How I got any sleep there is a wonder.

re: #323 Slumbering Behemoth

I had an upstairs neighbor like that once. I guess he worked nights and slept days. Anyhow, it sounded like he was moving furniture ever damn night, in the wee hours.

One afternoon I put this CD on the stereo and cranked it a little. He started pounding on the floor to show his displeasure. I guess it was now me who was interrupting his sleep.

I turned up the volume some more, put the disc on repeat, and left for about five hours.

He started being a little more quite in the late hours.

King Diamond (aka Kim Petersen) used to live just down the road from me. I had no idea until after he moved away.

My dad is one of those "deport them all" types.

It'll be good karma for to see his "New Netherlands" in Michigan turn into the Super Maghreb. (Maghreb means West. Compared to Morocco, Michigan is very far to the west).

Same thing in Mexico........ 5:00AM asshole neighbor had to trigger his alarm to get into his car every fucking morning. I started calling him Senor Claxon, which means Mr Horn in Spanish...... Oh god he hated that. He wanted to punch my lights out but I could have taken him.

Reading through Fark, and found this comment:

Sigh. Do they even know.

Yeah I'd like to see any of their 2nd-3rd generation immigrant butts get back on a plane to their old countries, so the Miccosuckees and Seminoles can live without having to look at them.

346 ProMayaLiberal  Sun, Jul 17, 2011 8:59:26pm

And then we have this charmer.

TravisBickle62

The homeless are for the most part vermin

Given that they ARE gutter-trash, I can see how that would appeal to them

There are some sick people in the world. FARK commenters are a good way to remind me of that.

Then he's bound for a lot of misery in his old age.

re: #347 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

The thing is, these people (or rather, their descendants) are integrating. By the first native-born generation, knowledge of Spanish is only at 50%. By the next generation, it is lower than 15%. And there will always be a Spanish presence, and not just because of the border. For cripes sake, there are still 50,000 Americans who use primarily Swedish, and that wave of immigration stopped 70-80 years ago.

The next wave of Immigrants, in my opinion, will come from the Arab World, starting in the next 5 years. They will Settle in Great Lakes Region/Rust Belt. The states that will get the most are Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The reason is because there is already a presence there. As we see in the past, groups tend to go where there is already a presence.

I doubt he cares. He sounds like the type who would point Gypsies to the SS and then not care what happened to them as long as they went away.

Forgive me if that seems a Godwin's Law violation.

You have no reason to feel wrong about what you said.

You are probably correct.

We should not let such a wave in. Period. The Arab world is far too hostile to us. Keep them out.

re: #351 Dark_Falcon

That will only increase hostility, and will confirm that the US hates Muslims. Most of the ones we are talking about are probably my age, and from places were the revolutions have failed (Syria), or places that are way overpopulated (Morocco, Egypt).

Remember, many people said the same of immigrants from Eastern Europe last Century, because they were seen as Anarchists and Communists. It's the same now.

Trying to deny entry will only make us more of a target, as we will confirm everything the radicals in the area say.

Honestly, I'm good with that. Things have changed enough and I simply do not trust the Arab world that far. If their hate is the price we must pay, then I'm ready to pay that price. Sorry PLL, but as long as there is large scale hate of America among Arabs, I cannot support large scale Arab immigration. It has worked well nowhere in Europe, and I cannot see it as a good idea.

re: #353 Dark_Falcon

Things won't get better unless we give it a shot. It's a vicious cycle that must stop somewhere.

In any case, we have not had the issues that Europe has had. Probably because Europe is alot less fair in dealing with Ethnic Differences. The Gypsies are a great example. Along with the fact that many Muslims live in ghettos, and in Germany, we have a community (The Turks), which cannot get citizenship even after 3 generations. Europe has created a good chunk of their own problems with this though half-assed measures, and general neglect.

Really?

Keep Egyptian Copts out? Lebanese Catholics? All those Iraqi refugees we created, especially those from the Assyrian Churches?

Baloney. Immigration quotas were smacked down in 1965 along with the Civil Rights acts (another reason cons HATE them). We don't need them again, on anyone.

The US doesn't have the same history of colonialism in the Arab world that Europe has, so trying to extrapolate that experience to the US is ahistorical, and makes no sense.

It's plain as day you think Arab lives are worth less than your own, be they generic "Shiites in Bahrain" or random "Arabs" in Europe or somewhere else. Not everyone feels that way, so you're going to have to find a way to reconcile it.

Betcha any money your relatives were probably just as hated, resented, and scapegoated with the same mentality you have about "Arabs", today.

Tomorrow, it will be the next group, and the indignant, checkbook-clutching, where's-my-goddam-three-dollar-gas cons will make excuses for hating them, as well. And so it goes.

My goodness, Charles. Your blog never stops improving its functionality in an extremely user-friendly way. These are not just bells and whistles, your innovations leave other political blogs in the dust.

What will this blog look like in 5 years? Ten? We can only imagine.
