Tech Note: Use LGF Connect Without an LGF Account

Sessions, man
LGF • Views: 36,977

As I was working with the code for our new LGF Connect feature that lets you post to Twitter with Ajax, I realized there was no reason to limit its usage to people with LGF accounts. Instead, I could do the standard Twitter authorization dance (basically the same code you see at any site that needs to access your Twitter account for any reason), and then save Twitter’s access credentials in “session variables,” that last until you quit your browser. So that’s the code I just finished deploying.

This new feature lets you use our Ajax Twitter interface for the length of your current browser session, even if you’re not registered or logged in at LGF. LGF Connect is a much more elegant way to retweet posts, or write your own tweets, than the dull, boring popup window you see everywhere else.

Here’s how it works.

The first time you click one of our little blue retweet buttons, you’ll see an alert box, asking the question:

Do you want to use LGF Connect to post to Twitter? (If you’re already logged in to an LGF account, your access credentials will be saved; otherwise your Twitter access only lasts for the current browser session.)

If you click the Cancel button, you’ll continue using the dull, boring popup window for the current session; you won’t see the alert box prompt again until you quit your browser and relaunch. (Trying to keep the annoyance factor down.)

If you click OK, you’ll see the standard Twitter authorization popup window, where you can grant access to LGF Connect. When you do that, the popup window will close and from then on you’ll be using the magical, mystical LGF Connect Ajax interface:

(Note that if you have previously granted LGF Connect access, the authorization popup window will simply appear and then close itself without giving you any prompt, but your access will be enabled after that.)

If you’re not registered and logged in at LGF, your Twitter access credentials are not saved anywhere permanently; they exist only in PHP’s session variables, and expire when you close your browser.

But if you are registered and logged in at LGF when you click OK, your Twitter access credentials will be saved in your user profile, so you’ll never have to do this again, unless you ‘Revoke Access’ in Twitter’s settings page.

Give it a try — and remember that this is strictly an opt-in process. You have all the control; you can revoke LGF Connect’s access to your account at any time in your Twitter settings. (Click the ‘Applications’ tab, then click ‘Revoke Access’ for LGF Connect.)

And if you’re just dying to try this right away, here’s a quick link to Authorize LGF Connect to access your Twitter account.

JUST what I need

Every so often, my desktop just freezes up,,, stone cold ,,, can't do anything with the mouse ,,, not even ctrl/alt/delete does anything,,,

Sometimes it does it mid start-up,,, other times while it's been on for hours,,,, other times as soon as it finishes starting up

Fans are running but no other "noises" coming from the tower (I have one side of the cover open to hear better)

Any hints, ideas, clues, suggestions!?!?!

TP Moron: "Objective" analysis of American Revolution shows God's hand at work.

I do know that even those who are not passionate about Christ are passionate their understanding that God gave us this country. Anyone who studies this history closely and fairly, without bias, has to come to this conclusion that the only way a country like the colonies of America can defeat the strongest military power on the face of the earth was by God’s intervention.

Look what Wikipedia has up:

Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping says the Chinese government will "smash" attempts for an independent Tibet in a speech outside the Potala Palace.

Seem awfully worried about little Tibet movement, aren't they.

There massive problems beginning to show up in China. Skyrocketing food prices, rising protests against companies and corruption of the CCP, and 3 of the minority groups are continually restive.

China's gonna have a rough ride ahead. Hopefully the government collapses.

Probably windows explorer crashing. I had the same problem for a while. Manually update windows and see if there's an update that partially installed and then froze up. If you have your windows disk you can use it to very your install and make sure everything is still where it should be.
You also may want to defragment your hard drive, that sometimes clears up problems.

Run an antivirus scan and check to see what processes you've got running. I recommend using PRCView for that. Google anything you aren't sure about. See if you've got anything autorunning that you don't need.

I do recall seeing a few times in the last several days the "updates are available ,,,," and THOUGHT I had done them, but maybe one froze mid-download

Will try to re-install later (or at least check to see if any updates are partially done)

I almost forgot, one more thing to try: Your motherboard has a little watch battery that should be replaced about every 2 years. It's real easy to pop out (just turn off the power first) and buy a new battery. It may reset you Bios but unless you've made significant changes (or flashed on an updated bios) it probably won;t effect anything.

Urging Obama’s Assassination Is Lawful Online Speech, Divided Appeals Court Says

A Southern California man was wrongly convicted of online threats against Barack Obama two weeks before Obama was elected president in November 2008, a divided federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.

“Re: Obama fk the niggar, he will have a 50 cal in the head soon,” read one of the messages posted on the Yahoo finance site by Walter Bagdasarian.

About 20 minutes later, Bagdasarian posted another statement after 1 a.m. on Oct. 22. “Shoot the nig country fkd for another 4 years+, what nig has done ANYTHING right???? long term???? never in history, except sambos.”

After Secret Service agents traced the remarks to him when a message board member tipped them off, Bagdasarian was found guilty of two counts of criminal threats to a presidential candidate. The La Mesa man was sentenced to two months in a halfway house. He appealed.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco concluded that Bagdasarian’s statements were “particularly repugnant” because they directly encourage violence. “We nevertheless hold that neither of them constitutes an offense within the meaning of the threat statute under which Bagdasarian was convicted” (.pdf), the appeals court wrote.

On The Subject of Twitter Feeds:

I appreciate this twitter integration but I dont really want to link my twitter account to my LGF account as it would seriously reduce my anonymity, which is something I take extra seriously here on account of the stalker blog.

That and I use my twitter feed to discuss a lot of political and news related content that isn't really discussed here and would probably be kind of awkward.

I've thought about creating another twitter account for my LGF account specifically but it would be kind of annoying logging in and out all the time. That and I dont really twitter much myself - I mostly use it to track a variety of people and news sources I find interesting. A lot of what I follow I dont agree with.

No need to log in & out if you use a client like Tweetdeck. You just have to pay attention to which account you're sending your tweets to as it could get a bit awkward, as you mentioned, if you tweet the wrong thing to the wrong one. It could also potentially expose your identity if someone happened to catch it and put 2 + 2 together.

re: #30 makeitstop

Hold up. That shit is against the law, isn't it?

What a terrible decision.

2-1 decision by the court;

In dissent, Judge Kim McClane Wardlaw wrote that “history undermines the conclusion that a reasonable person would interpret Mr. Bagdasarian’s ‘50 cal in the head’ comment as a joke or mere political rhetoric.”

Reading the two statements charged in the indictment in isolation, the majority dissects them to conclude that they were not even threats. It fails to consider the ominous backdrop of America’s history of racial violence, the uniquely racial and violent undercurrents of the 2008 presidential election, the entirety of Mr. Bagdasarian’s postings on October 22, two weeks before the 2008 election, and the listeners who not only perceived the posts as threatening when they were made, but who acted on that perception.

I think as it stands I dont really have a strong motivation to be posting things to twitter from LGF so I cant really be bothered to create another account but if I change my mind I think I will follow your suggestion.

re: #31 Lidane

How is that legal? Someone explain it to me.

The three-judge appellate panel, ruling 2-1, said Bagdasarian’s speech was lawful, perhaps because of a loophole in the law.

“The evidence is not sufficient to support a conclusion that a reasonable person who read the postings within or without the relevant context would have understood either to mean that Bagdasarian threatened to injure or kill the presidential candidate,” Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote for the majority.

Reinhardt noted, however, that the statements “intended to encourage others to take violent action.”

“The threat statute, however, does not criminalize predictions or exhortations to others to injure or kill the president,” Reinhardt wrote.

Problem with that theory is the fact that there is already increasing protests and food prices.

And some point, the CCP will begin to falter. At which point, the Tibetans and Uyghurs (among others) will likely want to extract bloody revenge. And in all probably, I will not say a word about whatever those groups do.

How in the hell is the Secret Service going to be able to track potential threats to the president?

Some higher court better reverse that shit, and fast.

Off topic, but I just found a picture which explains what Qadaffi has been asserting to be tribes.

Qwaleesh is a town controlled by the rebels, Asabaa'a is the town closest to the front line. And Gharyan is the town the rebels are aiming to get to try and further isolate Tripoli.

To Qaddafi, each town is a tribe!

You're asking to get stoned!

The great stoning of Gravel happens on Thursdays, when we all gather by the nearest lake and solumnly throw a carefully selected stone in. Sometimes we record ourselves to make it extra special.

The Tribe of Gravel is a small group - at most there is one or two throwing a stone at any given lake. Hence, no waters are muddied; at most some soon forgotten ripples are created.

Man Takes Viagra, Wears Sweatpants for TSA Pat Down

A Wyoming man walked through a TSA checkpoint with a raging erection on Tuesday, daring TSA officers and even fellow passengers to give him an invasive pat down.

“I’m next,” Warren Kelvin, 34, screamed as he pushed to the front of the security line. According to TSA officials, Kelvin had ingested two Viagra and wore sweatpants without boxers for his Southwest flight from Nashville to Phoenix.

Obama supports repeal of US law against gay marriage

US President Barack Obama supports repealing legislation which bans federal authorities from recognizing gay marriage, his spokesman said Tuesday.

The "Defense of Marriage Act" was brought in in 1996 by then president Bill Clinton and stipulates that the federal state only recognizes marriage as the legal union between a man and a woman.

California Senator Diane Feinstein has introduced draft legislation calling for the law to be repealed, which is set to be debated Wednesday in the US Senate. But there is little guarantee that it will pass through the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
