Oslo Updates: Terrorist Asks Lawyer How Many He Killed

Mass murderer was also climate change denier
World • Views: 58,349

Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik has reportedly asked his lawyer how many people he killed in his rampage. The lawyer, Geir Lippestad, also said that Breivik took some sort of drugs to be “strong, efficient, and awake.”

In addition to his “counter-jihad” ideology (taken directly from the hateful writing of bloggers Fjordman, Pamela Geller, and Robert Spencer), Breivik was also a fan of high profile climate change deniers, as Graham Readfearn points out: Norwegian Terrorist Anders Breivik Reveals Climate Denial Influences.

The manifesto of Norwegian terrorist and Christian fundamentalist Anders Behring Breivik, currently facing trial for the massacre of 76 people, shows what can happen when the unhinged take the language of the far-right to its ultimate ends.

In the 1500-word document, published online under his Anglicised name Andrew Berwick before the brutal bombing and shootings in Norway, Breivik reveals a hatred for Islam and socialism.

But the manifesto also echoes the beliefs of many climate change deniers and cites the work of Lord Christopher Monckton, Alex Jones and Steve McIntyre.

The document reveals how sceptic commentators had convinced him that the so-called “climategate” hacking of emails and data disproved human-cased climate change.

Writing about the unauthorised release of emails from researchers of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit in November 2009, Breivik says:

The information revealed how top scientists conspired to falsify data in the face of declining global temperatures in order to prop up the premise that man-made factors are driving climate change.

Breivik then provides seven URL links to the PrisonPlanet website of conservative radio host and climate change denier Alex Jones. Some of these links were re-posts of blogs written by Steve McIntyre.

Also in the manifesto, Breivik lists “environmentalist organisations” as being “smoke screens” for “cultural Marxists”. He also includes in this bracket, groups which advocate for animal rights, human rights, feminism and anti-racism.

Anders Behring Breivik: ‘I’m surprised I wasn’t stopped’

Breivik, who has confessed to killing 76 people in the atrocities in Oslo and on Utøya island, told Lippestad he was at war with the world, and that killing was justified in a war. “He was a little surprised he succeeded – in his mind succeeded,” Lippestad said. “He was expecting to be stopped earlier by the police or someone else during the actual day. He was surprised that he reached the island.

“He thought he would be killed after the bombing, after the action in the island, and he also thought he would be killed at the trial. He believes someone will kill him.”

Breivik also claimed that he was part of an anti-Islam network that has two cells in Norway and “several” more abroad.

Asked to explain Brievik’s mindset, Lippestad said: “He says he is sorry he had to do this but it is necessary. He looks upon himself as a warrior. And he started this war, and takes some kind of pride in that.

“He believes this is the start of a war that will go on for 60 years,” Lippestad said. “He believes the other cells will continue the war.”

Anonymous to target Breivik’s manifesto

In an attempt to discredit the manifesto of accused murderer Anders Behring Breivik, Anonymous has unveiled its own campaign known as Operation UnManifest. The hactivist group’s latest action is aimed at hacking into and modifying Breivik’s “European Declaration of Independence” with the goal of republishing fake editions of the so-called manifesto everywhere online, thus turning Anders into a “joke.”

20 Alexzander  Tue, Jul 26, 2011 2:33:03pm

This is an unfortunate story:

Israeli grocery store keeps Arab baggers and Jewish cashiers apart
It appears that Rami Levi chain has given in to a demand from local rabbis at Gush Etzion branch, in wake of romance between a Palestinian bagger and Jewish cashier.
Palestinians are no longer bagging groceries most days at the Rami Levi supermarket at the Gush Etzion junction, after a romance between a Palestinian bagger and a Jewish cashier spurred local rabbis to demand that Levi take action….

For those who do this type of thing for attention, there would be a partial solution that I think is practical. I doubt we can, or should, keep all their words from coming to us, but we could keep any word of the outside world from coming back to them.

It reminds me of a SciFi story I once read, can’t remember the name, where similar people were totally expunged from the record. Period, as if they had never existed.

Speaking of Rick Warren, a good piece at Slacktivist. I love these lines:

I know all too well what it is to have evil thoughts, bidden or unbidden, and how easy it can be to welcome them and entertain them. I understand the lure of all seven deadly sins and I don’t always resist that lure. I may give in to pride or to wrath. I may covet my neighbor’s ass. (Literally — I have no ass at all. My legs just kind of imperceptibly transform into a lower back at some indeterminate point. Sometimes I carry two wallets, just to pretend.)

They’d be calling him a True Believer and a genius and a voice of God for the heathen Europeans that have turned away from the Messiah. We’d see Crazy Pam linking to him and singing his praises from the rooftops.

The fact that he said all the things they agree with while mowing down dozens of kids at a summer camp is an uncomfortable inconvenience. They still agree with him in principle, since he’s just parroting what they’ve been saying for the last ten years.

Yeah, I think he can’t be defined as a ‘Christian terrorist’, if only because his action is not due to the demands of any particular ideology that even he calls Christian. It’s not done in the name of Christ, in other words.

Rather, he is a Conservative (with a capital C) terrorist. Far-right terrorist, if you will, which is synonymous with the modern Conservative cult. It’s done in the name of hating liberals - a motivation completely true to the teachings of this twisted cult.

109 Kragar (Antichrist )  Tue, Jul 26, 2011 3:30:16pm

Note to conservatives: Anders Breivik is a Christian

Breivik is not an American-style evangelical Christian. He is not a “fundamentalist” in that sense. Though he does identify with American cultural Christian conservatives. And he considers himself to be fighting in the name of “our Christian cultural heritage.” He supports a reconstituted Knights Templar devoted to winning a war against Islam in the name of Christianity.

All of this says “Christian terrorist.” His goals — the restoration of a pure Christian world in its “traditional” home — were analogous to the stated of goals of al-Qaida.

Does he go to church? Does he believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ? Is he a biblical literalist? I have no idea. There’s plenty about him that would lead a devout Christian to consider Breivik “not a ‘real’ Christian.” Here’s the thing about that: The same is true of all self-proclaimed Muslims who commit acts of terrorism.

re: #100 Sergey Romanov

Good point. He’s a cultural conservative terrorist.

From the manifesto (page 1,218).

The day when the Democrats and Republicans decided that America should no longer be a Christian and a European country

“Happy holidays” and “season greetings” you say? What happened to “Merry Christmas”?

Traditionally, the only holidays included in the “season” were Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day (in some countries), New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and Three Kings Day. But apparently the US political parties have expanded this term quite recently. Did they ask the American people if they wanted this or did they implement this in an undemocratic manner?

Now, thanksgiving, Christmas, Yule, Channukah, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, and occasionally Ramadan or the Eid depending on the Islamic calendar, to name a few are considered equal to Christmas in the US. Because, suddenly the US didn’t have a state religion. You see, the Democrats and Republicans decided on behalf of all US citizens that the US should no longer a European and Christian country. Instead, they decided, through a multitude of undemocratically implemented bills, that they should create a non-European multicultural nation without a united cultural identity. The people were never allowed to have their say.

This of course is a “war on Christmas argument.” Why he included Republicans here is unknown to me.

I fear that there are any number of lawyers who would be eager and even proud to defend him…

This lawyer is allegedly a member of the Labour party which was targeted by the terrorist. He said (I’m paraphrasing) that he had had his doubts, but that he felt that it was an important part of democracy that even this guy has a right to a defense. There is a Facebook campaign up in support of the lawyer; and the people on that facebook group all loath the terrorist, but all highly respect the lawyer for taking on this job, which much be one of the worst imaginable.

re: #111 Gus 802

And another…

Celebration of Christmas and Easter is now considered offensive to Muslims so it is now inappropriate to actually say; Merry Christmas. Instead we must say; Happy holidays…

And people still doesn’t get it? It can’t be said clearer than this; the Western European cultural Marxist regimes want you to abandon God and the Church. Perhaps you should take the hint already. Because as soon as you acknowledge that there is a very real war being waged by the Marxists through their deliberate objective of completely deconstruction the European Church, the sooner you can rush to its defense.

Again, Breivik is arguing about a “war on Christmas.”

The first installment of $900 billion is contingent on enacting 10 year caps on annual appropriations which the leadership had hoped would save well over $1 trillion. Devastating class warfare not good enough for House GOP

House Speaker John Boehner’s new budget proposal would require deep cuts in the years immediately ahead in Social Security and Medicare benefits for current retirees, the repeal of health reform’s coverage expansions, or wholesale evisceration of basic assistance programs for vulnerable Americans.

The plan is, thus, tantamount to a form of “class warfare.” If enacted, it could well produce the greatest increase in poverty and hardship produced by any law in modern U.S. history.

Under Norwegian law? Who knows. But either way, I don’t see him ever getting out of prison.

This was the discussion two threads up, O’Reilly’s outrage at acalling him a “Christian”, even though he mentions his religious beliefs quite clearly in his manifesto.

But do I think that “fundamentalist” does not describe it correctly.

O’Reilly is, in my estimation, a “true Christian”, and his outrage is genuine. How dare this heartless killer call himself Christian, O’Reilly’s thinking. So he says so.

Look at the gulf between O’Reilly’s take on ABB, and Glenn Beck’s. Beck comes across as a fellow traveler trying to be a bit coy, rather than as truly shocked and appalled.

To me it seems pretty unlikely that he will be considered clinically insane, which is what matters. There’s been several interviews with forensic psychiatrists in Norwegian media; I was actually in the same TV studio as one of them the other day, and discussed it a bit with her afterwards, too.

If he is deemed insane, he’ll of course be institutionalised; which in this case would be pretty much the same as a prison. If not, he’ll be sent to prison. The government seeks 30 years, which is the extended maximum sentence that applies for crimes against humanity. In addition, he’ll probably be convicted to “involuntary commitment” in addition to the prison sentence, i.e. what in reality is a life sentence.

What does it mean to you?

It’s not semantics, it’s accuracy.

You’re asking a person familiar with what actual, self-identified “Fundamentalistst Christians” actually believe and how they live, so you might not like my answer. You’re right about literal interpretations of scripture (Biblical inerrancy).

They are often confused with rightwing conservative Evangelical Christians because the belief in Biblical inerrancy (which was originated with the Fundamentalists about 100 years ago, by the way) influences many socially and theologically conservative Protestants, not just those id’ing as “Fundamentalist Christians”.

The general populace takes “fundamentalist” to mean something similar, typically some flavor of Protestant. But this guy doesn’t talk in even general terms understood to be “fundamentalist Christian”. It’s the wrong connotation, completely.

For someone seemingly so sensitive about broad brushes, especially when it comes to reading my posts, I would think you’d be among the first to understand the problems of calling ABB “fundamentalist Christian”. He’s not even Protestant. He thinks he’s a frickin’ Templar lol.

This of course is a “war on Christmas argument.” Why he included Republicans here is unknown to me.

Probably because the Republican Party has routinely sent out ‘Season’s Greetings’ to its constituents. Much to the distress of some of them.

Also, and this part is addressed to the fuckwad, we were never a ‘Christian’ or ‘European’ country. Fought a damn war over it. A real one, not a pretend one where you shoot a bunch of unarmed children. And I’d say it was to get away from people like you, but frankly, that would defame Great Britain. So let’s merely say that when the Founders put that whole freedom of religion bit in there, it was in the full knowledge of how badly people like you had effed up Europe in the generations before their birth.

I’m sure someone will argue that this is literally true, that people are whipped in the streets of Oslo for saying Merry Christmas—but I’ve heard American wingnuts use exactly this same language, and all they mean is that the cashier at Wal-Mart said “Happy Holidays” to them.

re: #215 Naso Tang

It’s not my reading of your posts, it’s your writing of them. :)

It’s definitely your reading, your own oversensitivity, and like a few others, an over-eagerness to be offended at a few things you happen not to agree with.

OK, I think I understand your point, technically speaking. Unfortunately however those who invented the term “fundamentalist” 100 years ago (I take your word for that) shot themselves in the foot as far as many non fundamentalists are concerned (or atheists) because they did not define it as a principle of fundamentals, like love your neighbor and respect everyone else; they made it a stupid literal interpretation of the word of god written thousands of years ago in (modern) English.

Sorry for the run on sentence.

What you wrote in bold is incorrect.

Mine is not a technical point, it’s an accurate point. But don’t take my word for anything, the term “fundamentalist” did originate around 100 years ago - a bunch of theologically conservative Protestants at Princeton Theological (yes, THAT Princeton), Moody Bible Institute, and other seminaries came up with a pamphlet series called “The Fundamentals”, which they mass-produced and sent to pastors all over the country. The idea was to counter theologically liberal trends which were affecting what we now call “mainline churches”.

I happen to own one of these pamphlets. They are interesting. Princeton Theological is still known as a theologically conservative school.

More about The Fundamentals: [Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

If you’re interested, archive.org has the entire series online: [Link: bit.ly…]

1978 reiteration of The Fundamentals: The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy

These are long and tedious. But if you’re interested in where the terminology comes from, they are worthy reads, because Fundamentalism has influenced many on the US Christian right. ABB may have been influenced by USA rwnj, but calling him “fundamentalist Christian” is just lazy, and inaccurate. There’s nothing in his writings even remotely “fundamentalist”, not even using the broadest understanding of it.

As I already said, I accept your statement that ABB is not what is recognized as a “fundamentalist Christian” in theological terms, but I think you miss my point about the common interpretation on that term which I am far from alone in seeing.

Fundamentalist has become synonymous with rigid and dogmatic and not only for Christianity. The very term biblical “inerrancy” is proof of that, since no interpretation of the bible, all of which have to be personal by definition, can be inerrant.

As far as my sensitivity goes, what makes you think I am offended? I am far from offended, I simply criticize when I think it is warranted, but I do appreciate your input.

There is a Facebook campaign up in support of the lawyer; and the people on that facebook group all loath the terrorist, but all highly respect the lawyer for taking on this job, which much be one of the worst imaginable.

What do you feel is the general feeling on this guy among Norwegians? re: #58 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

From Charles’ link:

Groaaannn he’s not a “fundamentalist Christian”, not even an Evangelical conservative whacko. This is promoting disinformation.

I do notice that there’s quite a bit of discussion on this description; and I will have to say that I do agree with the above poster.

Now, obviously the Utøya terrorist does describe himself as Christian, and he also talks about this in parts of his manifesto - where he also rambles on about Crusader themes and Temple Knights (none of which he seems to have particularly much insight in). Although I dislike the use of the word “fundamentalist” in general (it doesn’t really say much, does it), someone who kills dozens of people in a “marketing campaign” (his own words) for a disgusting tract of paranoid conspiracy theories, is obviously easily described as such.

The problem is that the two words, put together, in reality describes a very specific phenomenon, particularily in the American context. And while I do not think too highly of the actual Christian fundamentalists, I’m a secular centre-left-oriented European agnostic, after all; I think it’s somewhat unreasonable to put the Utøya terrorist in that category, for two reasons:

1. He does not belong there;
2. It leads the focus away from the groups the Utøya terrorist very obviously did draw inspiration from, namely the socalled and self-proclaimed counterjihadists; and prominently Fjordman, whose texts make up a very considerable part of his manifesto (which is even -named- after: 1. the anniversary of the date for the battle at the gates of Vienna reference to in the name of a certain blog, 2. a Fjordman essay where he states that “We” should take “the necessary means” if a list of demands - such as closing the borders for Muslims and dissolving the European Union - are not met).

Now, I suspect that the use of the term “Christian fundamentalist” may originate in Norwegian media, and that the description has been translated. Here I would like to point out that the words do not carry quite the same connotations in Norwegian as in English, but that I still consider it a misnomer. This is also something I have underscored in some of my criticism of early media reports, where I pointed out that they should instead be looking at the connections to the socalled “counterjihadist” movement. That is also what the Norwegian media is doing now, and I think that the description as “kristenfundamentalist” is not much used anymore. He is described - much more accurately - as a “høyreekstremist”, which in English becomes “right-wing extremist”. That’s not a term without its problems either, but it is a much better one.

To be honest, I have little interest in knowing exactly how those who claim inerrancy know it because I know that they can’t possibly be inerrant. If they want to have their definition of fundamentalism different from the common usage, they can do so because that is what theology is about; creating recursive terminology.

However, as I have already said several times, I understand why you say ABB was not a fundamentalist Christian; he is just a fundamentalist extremist.

The common usage comes from all those items linked, not the other way around. Just because commoners don’t know that doesn’t negate the fact.

Additionally, you might be interested in Martin E. So much for the House GOP plan (Boehner’s plan); the CBO scores it…. poorly.

$1 billion saved in the current year (FY 2012), and $851 billion over 10 years.

With so much of the savings supposedly backloaded (as of how it is currently written), how much do you want to think will actually be saved under this plan.

If you say closer to $1 billion than $851 billion, you’d be right. You can rest assured that whatever was supposed to be saved would be spent elsewhere or otherwise altered by a later Congress.

Bachmann misses nearly 40 percent of votes

Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has skipped 37 percent of House votes since launching her presidential campaign, The Hill’s Michael O’Brien reported Tuesday.

By the newspaper’s calculation, that’s 50 missed votes out of 135 taken by the House since Bachmann officially announced her candidacy June 27 in Waterloo, Iowa. It’s no surprise that the presidential campaign trail is cutting into Bachmann’s day job—but that doesn’t mean her critics won’t hold it against her.

I’ll be Bach.

So Jerry Bruckheimer comes up to a group of action stars and pitches them a strange new movie about classical musicians, and asks them which one they all would like to play. Bruce Willis pipes up and says, “Hey, I’d like to play Beethoven. That guy was badass, especially since he was deaf.” Sylvester Stallone says, “I’ll play Mozart. Brilliant from a young age, he’s my kind of badass.” Arnold Schwarzenegger sits and thinks for a minute and then says, “I’ll be Bach.”

The common usage comes from all those items linked, not the other way around. Just because commoners don’t know that doesn’t negate the fact.

Additionally, you might be interested in Martin E. Marty’s The Fundamentalism Project (your local library probably has them), but if you think that stuff I linked is long and tedious, you really won’t like The Fundamentalism Project. It’s another academic venture that looks at all religious fundamentalism, not just the Christian version.

“Fundamentalist extremist” as redundancy? Perhaps. Except all fundamentalists are not extremist, not all extremists are fundamentalists. And ABB is not a “fundamentalist”.

That Venn Diagram thing, again. lol

Congress has to actually get a bill to his desk before what he will or won’t veto comes into play. Also, he doesn’t actually have the power to introduce legislation, he can propose it informally, in an annual or special address, and hold Congress over for special session, but can’t force them to vote on or pass squat. I know you know this, but it bears mentioning anyway.

Tell Naso Tang. he’s the one insistent on using “fundamentalist” even though he knows it’s not accurate.

I learned a long time ago, right here on LGF, that it is an often misunderstood and misused term.

Wanting to get “back to basics” or fundamentals means different things to different people. For some it means the Golden Rule and just trying to raise their kids, stay married and out of debt.

For others it means turning back the clock to some primitive version of life and society.

Most of the people I’ve met that consider themselves “Fundamentalists” are just trying to get thru life.

I learned the term Whacko works so much better when describing the crazies of every flavor. It’s just so much easier than qualifying every term and label.

Our man in Oslo:

What do you feel is the general feeling on this guy among Norwegians? I hear his lawyer saying that he is obviously insane, but I believe he is a sociopath who simply has no conscience, kind of like our serial killer Ted Bundy. He was perfectly functional within society, was well liked, but was an absolute predator of humans.

The general feeling is that he is politically insane, not clinically insane. I’m not in Oslo, by the way. About 7 hours away by train.
