I remember on 9-11 before we really knew what was going on; people where I was were saying it was Islamic Terrorists. I told several people; don't forget about Timothy McVeigh. Boy, was I wrong.
By the time I found out what was had happened in Norway; Tim McVeigh's evil twin had already been captured.
Honestly? I'm pretty certain I would've jerked my knee as high as anyone else did on this one.

Envoy compares terror in Israel, Norway
Svein Sevje said in an Israeli newspaper interview Tuesday that while the Norwergian bomb and gun rampages that killed 76 people and Palestinian attacks should both be considered morally unacceptable, he wanted to “outline the similarity and the difference in the two cases.” Palestinians, the ambassador told Maariv, “are doing this because of a defined goal that is related to the Israeli occupation. There are elements of revenge against Israel and hatred of Israel. To this you can add the religious element to their actions.”

He did:
I guess it is tempting for the many who have endured years of vilification, to just start believing the propaganda and embrace NS fully. However, I remain a staunch anti-Nazi and I blame NSDAP for the situation we are in. Hadn’t it been for the actions of the cultural right wing extremists known as the NSDAP our Western European countries would not be dominated by the cultural Marxist extremist regimes we witness today. If the NSDAP had been isolationistic instead of imperialistic(expansionist) and just deported the Jews (to a liberated and Muslim free Zion) instead of massacring them, the anti-European hate ideology known as multiculturalism would have never been institutionalized in Western Europe, because the Marxists would never have been so radicalized to begin with. The cultural conservatives would have been in a very strong and dominant situation today.
Western European countries would have had cultural conservative doctrines similar to what we see in Japan and South Korea.

Ary·an adj.
Word History: It is one of the ironies of history that Aryan, a word nowadays referring to the blond-haired, blue-eyed physical ideal of Nazi Germany, originally referred to a people who looked vastly different. Its history starts with the ancient Indo-Iranians, Indo-European peoples who inhabited parts of what are now Iran, Afghanistan, and India. Their tribal self-designation was a word reconstructed as *arya- or *rya-. The first of these is the form found in Iranian, as ultimately in the name of Iran itself (from Middle Persian rn (ahr), "(Land) of the Iranians," from the genitive plural of r, "Iranian"). The variant *rya- is found unchanged in Sanskrit, where it referred to the upper crust of ancient Indian society. These words became known to European scholars in the 18th century. The shifting of meaning that eventually led to the present-day sense started in the 1830s, when Friedrich Schlegel, a German scholar who was an important early Indo-Europeanist, came up with a theory that linked the Indo-Iranian words with the German word Ehre, "honor," and older Germanic names containing the element ario-, such as the Swiss warrior Ariovistus who was written about by Julius Caesar. Schlegel theorized that far from being just a designation of the Indo-Iranians, the word *arya- had in fact been what the Indo-Europeans called themselves, meaning something like "the honorable people." (This theory has since been called into question.) Thus "Aryan" came to be synonymous with "Indo-European," and in this sense entered the general scholarly consciousness of the day. Not much later, it was proposed that the original homeland of the Indo-Europeans had been in northern Europe. From this theory, it was but a small leap to think of the Aryans as having had a northern European physiotype. While these theories were playing themselves out, certain anti-Semitic scholars in Germany took to viewing the Jews in Germany as the main non-Aryan people because of their Semitic roots; a distinction thus arose in their minds between Jews and the "true Aryan" Germans, a distinction that later furnished unfortunate fodder for the racial theories of the Nazis.

That's been common knowledge (both Jobs-butt-stick and iPhone-flash) for some time now. Welcome to the second decade of the 21st century.
I found this about Jobs kvetching on Flash...
Earlier this year, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs panned Flash on the iPhone, arguing that its fragmented architecture offered no middle ground suitable for use on his company's mobile products.
Specifically, he said Flash Lite "is not capable of being used with the web" because it doesn't support the same types of Flash media accessible by the traditional version of Flash player on the PC. On the otherhand, the version built for PC was dubbed a resource hog that "performs too slow to be useful" on the iPhone.
"There's this missing product in the middle," he said.

re: #98 engineer dog
both reagan and clinton were one term presidents at this point in their terms. bush senior, on the other hand, was a shoe-in for reelection
True, they both got down into the 30s in their approval ratings. Obama on the other hand appears to be an outlier in many ways. This works for and against him.
[Link: www.csmonitor.com...]
"Looking at history, particularly Clinton and Reagan, it is somewhat surprising that [Obama] has never yet fallen into the 30 percent range in our approval rating," Newport said. "And yet both Reagan and Clinton, in their first terms when the economy was perceived as bad ... both fell into the 30s."Newport noted, "Satisfaction with the way things are going is ... correlated with economic perceptions fairly strongly." At the same time, Obama "is overperforming. Based on where every president has been, his approval rating now is higher than we would predict it to be based on" how satisfied American adults say they are.
Pollsters are not sure why Obama has fared better than expected in the polls. Newport offered two possibilities. "One theory has to do with personal characteristics of the man," the Gallup executive said. "The other has to do with the nature of politics today." Under that theory, Obama has "kind of a rock-hard coalition that are never going to abandon him in approval ratings, and therefore that is why his approval ratings will be propped up no matter what happens."
He could lose, but of all of the candidates, he's the one not to bet against or counted out.
110 | Gus Tue, Jul 26, 2011 7:57:09pm |
And that same poll has this...
Monday's PRRI/RNS poll also found that Obama is fairing well against potential Republican opponents. In a head-to-head matchup with Romney, 44% would vote for Obama and 36% for Romney. In an Obama/Bachmann race, 45% would vote for Obama and 37% for Bachmann.
Monday as in yesterday. So that poll has Obama ahead.

I don't think you have to worry about that. The GOP can manage to win elections no matter how crazy they get. They may not get the WH back in 2012, but they will either hold the House or lose the House and get the Senate. Just because some of us think they are dooming themselves to political obscurity doesn't mean they are in fact, an increasing number of white voters seem to think the GOP is awesome.
[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
As the country enters into the 2012 presidential election cycle, the electorate’s partisan affiliations have shifted significantly since Barack Obama won office nearly three years ago. In particular, the Democrats hold a much narrower edge than they did in 2008, particularly when the partisan leanings of independents are taken into account.Notably, the GOP gains have occurred only among white voters; a 2-point Republican edge among whites in 2008 (46% to 44%) has widened to a 13-point lead today (52% to 39%). In sharp contrast, the partisan attachments of black and Hispanic voters have remained consistently Democratic.
While Republican gains in leaned party identification span nearly all subgroups of whites, they are particularly pronounced among the young and poor.
Doesn't sound like we are headed to one party rule any time soon.

Here's an interesting read.
Lessons from the great government shutdown of 1995-1996
With a March 4 deadline looming on extending a stopgap spending bill, both Republicans and Democrats are preparing for the possibility of a federal government shutdown. Interestingly, a new poll of political insiders reveals that Republicans overwhelmingly believe that a government shutdown is not in their interest. Democrats, by contrast, believe a government shutdown would benefit their party.
The reason? The great government shutdown of 1995-1996, in which a weakened President Bill Clinton faced off against determined Republicans, led by House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) -- and won. Take a look at the classic New York Daily News cover from that period (above) as evidence of how the Republicans lost control of their message. The Republican Revolution died that day.
John Boehner, the current speaker, was the No. 4 Republican in the House leadership during Gingrich's heyday. By many accounts, the experience of living through that shutdown has deeply affected him. Assuming Boehner can maintain control of his caucus, that alone makes it less likely a shutdown will happen this year.
The Fact Checker covered the budget battles of 1995-1996 and so had a front-row seat to the GOP debacle. What lessons can the Republicans draw from that experience? As part of our effort to provide background context for issues current in the news, let's examine the history.

Here's an interesting read.
Excerpt:
In retrospect, Republican lawmakers in 1995 had fallen prey to listening only to their own "echo chamber" and did not understand how their actions were being perceived outside Republican fundraisers and caucus meetings. A more logical course would have been to achieve smaller victories that would have preserved their majority. Assuming Clinton had been defeated in 1996, a Republican president could have then pushed ahead with the more revolutionary agenda.
They're doing it again. Bwahahaha!

Nearly 10 years ago today, on August 1, 2001, the Associated Press reported that the Treasury Department was tapping $51 billion of credit in order to pay for the budgetary cost of the first round of Bush tax cuts’ rebate checks. The AP reported at the time that Democratic Party opponents of the tax cuts worried that they’d return government budgets to “red ink“:

Debt ceiling threat has Wall Street scrambling
Business executives have stepped up appeals for political action and prepared contingency plans in case the stalemate persists.
Reporting from New York and Washington—
Wall Street has tried to ignore the threat posed by Washington failing to raise the debt ceiling. No more.
Business executives stepped up appeals this week for political action, worried that the nation faced a crisis, and prepared contingency plans in case the stalemate persists. At Wall Street banks and investment firms, many traders are putting vacation plans on hold so they can be at their desks Aug. 2.
"Trading floors Street-wide are unusually well populated for this time of year," said Peter Kenny, a trader at Knight Capital Group. "You will see very few people on vacation."
The Dow Jones industrial average fell for a third day in a row Tuesday, the dollar slumped and gold hit a new high amid increasing jitters that President Obama and Congress won't reach an accord to lift the debt ceiling in time.
Without a deal, the most feared scenario is that the U.S. will miss payments on its bonds and default — which financial experts say would be disastrous. While still considered unlikely, the prospect is popping up more in conversations.
"No one … could possibly say that there is no chance of a catastrophic outcome," JPMorgan Chase & Co. CEO Jamie Dimon told analysts last week.

After Aiding Republicans, Business Groups Press Them on Debt Ceiling
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which spent millions of dollars last year helping elect Republicans to Congressional seats, is struggling to convince the House it helped to build that the debt ceiling must be increased.
The chamber and other business groups have pressed with increasing urgency for Congress to raise the maximum amount that the government can borrow. They have cataloged the consequences of default at meetings, parties and dinners and over drinks.
On Tuesday, the chamber threw its weight behind the proposal of the House speaker, John A. Boehner, telling recalcitrant Republicans that a pending vote on the plan was a with-us-or-against-us moment that would be remembered during the next election campaign.
But as the government runs out of money, those efforts have not produced the desired result. The freshman class of House Republicans, along with longer-serving members, is balking at Mr. Boehner’s plan, let alone anything that Senate Democrats and the White House might be willing to accept.
The tension highlights the distance between the pro-business stalwarts of the traditional Republican Party and the populism of its newer representatives, many of whom seem to view Wall Street and Washington with equal suspicion.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Monday that he is giving Congress ten days to pass a constitutional amendment that would make raising taxes nearly impossible. And if he doesn’t get what he wants, he will do everything in his power to force the U.S. to default on its debts.
“Okay, in ten days you want to change the United States Constitution by two-thirds vote in both houses?” Matthews asked. “That’s what you’re demanding.”
“Yes,” Lee admitted.

After Aiding Republicans, Business Groups Press Them on Debt Ceiling
“I think they’re very pleased with the antigovernment inclinations of the Tea Party Republicans when it comes to taxes and regulation,” said David Axelrod, one of the president’s chief political advisers. “But now we have a situation where the integrity of the economy and the U.S. financial system is at stake, and they’re being hoisted on their own petards.”

Here's an interesting read.
The problem is that this isn't a center-driven discussion. The middle is crying out for a deal, but it doesn't matter because what legislators in both parties are afraid of is pissing off their base and facing a strong primary challenge. My best friend and I were talking about this earlier. Right now, the party bases are so far apart that no "grand bargain" can succeed. We both think the best thing now is a five-week extension of the debt ceiling, followed by a week where no talks take place, to allow the parties to take stock and the temperature to cool off. And sad to say, we reached this conclusion knowing that no grand bargain means a credit downgrade. But there's nothing for it: the actions needed to avoid a downgrade are simply politically impossible.

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the party’s vote counter, began his talk by showing a clip from the movie, “The Town”, trying to forge a sense of unity among the independent-minded caucus. One character asks his friend: “I need your help. I can’t tell you what it is. You can never ask me about it later.”
“Whose car are we gonna take,” the character says.
After showing the clip, Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), one of the most outspoken critics of leadership among the 87 freshmen, stood up to speak, according to GOP aides.
“I’m ready to drive the car,” West replied, surprising many Republicans by giving his full -throated support for the plan.
WaPo ommited:
Ben Affleck: I need your help. I can't tell you what it is. You can never ask me about it later. And we're going to hurt some people.Jeremy Renner: What car are we going to take?

They've had more than enough time. If they extend it for another 5 weeks they will only return to where they started from and being the process all over again. During those 5 weeks market uncertainty would remain including the bond market. Many firms have already borrowed billions to prepare for worst case scenarios.
Some major investors and borrowers already have taken steps to protect themselves from potential market turmoil. California had planned to borrow in August by selling short-term notes to investors, but instead on Tuesday took a $5.4-billion loan from eight major banks to bypass the U.S. debt drama.
The 5 week extension will cost us dearly and out a dent in the recovery. It may be better then allowing a full collapse but it's not the desired outcome.

Some of it does. More defense production does mean more jobs for those who produce the armor plate, assemble the MRAPS, etc. It does compensate for the taxes, but it does have some small effect. That effect may not be noticeable, though.

Soldiers at war get paid only slightly more than they get paid for being on base training, waiting around in case they're needed, or marching in parades.
Most of the cost of war is the stuff we use -- fuel and replacement parts for the jets, the jeeps and tanks that get blown up and we need new ones, weapons and ammo, drones, bombs, etc.

How the Deficit Got This Big
By TERESA TRITCH
Published: July 23, 2011
With President Obama and Republican leaders calling for cutting the budget by trillions over the next 10 years, it is worth asking how we got here — from healthy surpluses at the end of the Clinton era, and the promise of future surpluses, to nine straight years of deficits, including the $1.3 trillion shortfall in 2010. The answer is largely the Bush-era tax cuts, war spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, and recessions.
...
The second graph shows that under Mr. Bush, tax cuts and war spending were the biggest policy drivers of the swing from projected surpluses to deficits from 2002 to 2009. Budget estimates that didn’t foresee the recessions in 2001 and in 2008 and 2009 also contributed to deficits. Mr. Obama’s policies, taken out to 2017, add to deficits, but not by nearly as much.
A few lessons can be drawn from the numbers. First, the Bush tax cuts have had a huge damaging effect. If all of them expired as scheduled at the end of 2012, future deficits would be cut by about half, to sustainable levels. Second, a healthy budget requires a healthy economy; recessions wreak havoc by reducing tax revenue. Government has to spur demand and create jobs in a deep downturn, even though doing so worsens the deficit in the short run. Third, spending cuts alone will not close the gap. The chronic revenue shortfalls from serial tax cuts are simply too deep to fill with spending cuts alone. Taxes have to go up.
...

Consequently, we see Republicans throwing slavery nostalgia cotillions.
Overseas, they're crying in their soup because Hitler made Europe look bad. Boohoo, if only everyone was cordoned off in their own place, then maybe my own life wouldn't SUCK so much, sniffle!

The problem is that the stimulus was never as big as it needed to be. It was just what Obama could get passed. The Nobel Prize Winner for Economics and commentator for the New York Times has been preaching this since 2009. Krugman was right then, and he is right now about what needs to be don.

Wasn't the one guy from MyDD (I'm thinking Jerome, could be wrong) originally part of DKos? I seem to remember him starting up MyDD after he split from Kos.
All those blogs went nuts when Obama got the nomination.
Don't know about Jerome, but Armando (i.e., Big Tent Democrat) from Talk Left was a former Kos blogger until Kos got tired of his shit and kicked him off his blog.
I remember John Cole getting into a pissing match with Armando back in 2008. I even blogged about it:

When Republicans quit:
- throwing Southern Evening Confederacy balls with rent-a-slaves,
- stop running candidates who campaign on the Confederate flag, "secession and nullification", and dress up as Waffen SS on the weekends
and
- quit trying to smear everyone who laughs at Sarah "Look at me I'm a feminist" Palin's hairstyle as a "sexist", and claim MLK was a Republican,
I might think about STFU.
Until then, live with it. Downding away.

Bachmann has lobbied hard throughout her political career for the teaching in schools of intelligent design, the belief that some aspects of existence are best attributable to a superior being. She has argued that evolution is a theory that has never been proven.(16) In the state Senate, she coauthored a bill requiring intelligent design to be part of the school curriculum, and, in 2003, she participated in a “Ten Commandments Rally” at the Minnesota state capitol, calling for the posting of the Ten Commandments at public schools and buildings.(17)

However, you can't deny that the Republicans have gone massively off the rails.
The fact that the Terrorist in Norway thought of the Tea Party (Currently Predominent strain in the party) very highly is a warning.
While Norway ended up as a sacrifice to wake Europe up about Right-Wing Bigotry (Which it is beginning to look like it did), this won't have a major impact in the US.
I personally think that by 2014, there will have been a Terrorist Attack by the Right Wing in the United States. Probably similar to either Oslo, OKC, or an attack against a Mosque.

By and large, yes, because the evangelical voting base is a Republican block, and they're the ones who primarily care about people being Mormons. Hence, other Republican candidates will try to leverage it to get an advantage. (Hi, Huckabee.)
Outside that specific field--or, I guess any race where a candidate's LDS background could be used to pry voters off them--no one really cares.

I saw that clip when it came out. It's in line with what I was saying about these people's inability to compete in a modern world that doesn't automatically grant them special rights based on skin color, religion or ancestry (and this includes the jihadist and Salafist jerks trying to force the world back into some time in the 8th Century.)
The whites here and Europe who feel that way feel humiliated because we won't let them kick us around anymore. It's butthurt on a grand scale, but they too have been at it for generations. Is their "wounded sense of displaced authority" just the most logical thing they can think of to explain why they are so scared of the current state of things. I don't think we can wait until they "get their act together". Even the most enlightened conservatives move slowly. Somehow we need to get it into their heads that the mythical days of yore are just that and regardless of color or culture, the world is going to keep on changing and changing fast.

It looks like 3.0. The 5.0 one I found seemed like a parody.

I doubt it. Most of the truly whiny would never actually work that hard.
I'm still shivering over marjoriemoms (? I think) post about the skeletons in the well. Scapegoats for fear. . . .

The one on Youtube with Jessica Simpson? That isn't what SB posted. I can't find a link for that one.

Maybe we are going to see more "amish or LDS" type enclaves?
I don't know, but we aren't giving up our 2nd amendment rights, so we'd better find a way and find a way fast.
Our communities have been putting up with these race-butthurts for generations, including with 2nd amendment rights.
Two 60s examples:

So we know exactly what these types of people are capable of. And ftmp, we scare them, all their legendary resentments, bombs, guns, hemp ropes, burnt crosses, and threats of mob rule, don't scare us.

And if some of those statistics are indeed true... China soon to be the largest "English Speaking" nation on Earth... India's "Honor Student" children population exceeding America's entire population of children, what then?
Do we get our collective shit together, and get serious about maintaining and improving our (now flagging IMO) status as world leaders in industry and science? Or do we bend to the Luddites, both political and religious, who deem it is better to spend money on this or pray to that?
Or, do we take that downward spiral path of assuming that "we" must out-breed "them"?

Hmm. I'm not sure. I know the one I saw in grad school was already outdated by the time we saw it.
Eh. It doesn't matter. The basic point still stands that the world is changing at an exponential rate and some folks simply can't handle it. They're in full freakout mode. That much is still true no matter which video is the most current one.

That is the issue, in a lot of ways. Do we insist that we have every right to be Number One, because we just DO, or do we actually work to keep our edge?

I'm not talking race wars. I'm talking (localized) civil war.
People have looked for scapegoats for their sense of inadequacy since the beginning of people. The same categories of people always find themselves at the receiving end.
Only now the inadequacy isn't the Plague, or Power, it's Globalization, Communication, really fast paced change that people of all labels are going to find difficult to handle.

Too late for the latter.
Leaving aside the English-speaking nation and honor student stats...2 countries with a combined population of 3 billion people -- if even 1% is middle class consumers, compared to our own flagging middle class in a country of 350 million = [cash register sound clip]

I think we accept that competition is good and realize that everyone is following in our footsteps. Sometimes they will outdo us, sometimes they won't. Sometimes they'll create something new all by themselves.
We should welcome the challenge, IMHO. Raise our children to live in an international world.

EXACTLY!
Our kids are going to get jobs overseas after college, not just out-of-state. Reality is coming at us FAST.

I'm not talking about race wars, either. I'm talking about communities that have developed strategies to deal with this reactionary, fear-based, resentment-driven mentality for years, yet still thrive.

Oh well, we have a perfect match, actually.
"How to teach Change" --we only have to look at our own history. It will, of course, have to be packaged in a lilly white box tho to get it to sell to the target audience. Groan.

Dunno...from my pov, I'm not going to beg people to learn things that are designed to help them cope. The video you're talking about is a good example, it didn't sugar-coat anything. Life isn't sugar-coated, so if it hurts someone's sensibilities to hear a few harsh facts, we can expect the problem to never, ever be solved.

The real Aryan Superman as I understand the proper origin of the term.
Not really. More like this
Aryan and Iranian are cognates (the same word in different languages).

They believe that bullshit that the Doughy Pantload started spreading about Nazis being liberals, so a liberal summer camp = a training ground for the next Hitler Youth.
This, of course, wasn't a liberal summer camp. It was a socialist summer camp. The Liberal party is Venstre; this was the Arbeiderparti.
