In today’s news of the Boehner, the Speaker finally got the Republican votes he needed to pass the Tea Party-inspired right wing idiocy that will now be voted down in the Senate. Which leaves the country … where?

UPDATE at 7/29/11 5:39:39 pm

Et voila — the Senate votes to table the bill. Denied.

AS far as I can tell this changes nothing. The senate will hand the house something (probably a hybrid of both bills) in the next few days. The House will pass it or default.

To be fair, they took a potential career-ender for Boehner and turned it into a mere national laughingstock.

So, there is that.

I wouldn't want to go in against Pelosi. I don't care how old she is; no woman survives in Washington that long without knowing how to go for the throat.

She wouldn't last two minutes against Hillary, though.

Well, this was a necessary step. Now the Boehner bill is out over the Tea Party's screams, Reid can get his bill through the Senate (a number of Republicans have already said they'll support it). A reconciliation bill sans BBA would probably pass both houses.

I think the period of time the debt ceiling covers will be the important thing. It would make the BBA vote moot.

Yeah, right Dep't:

Employees of the New York Post were instructed Friday to "preserve and maintain" any documents that may relate to the practice of phone hacking or bribing of public officials.

The legal department for News Corp, the Post's parent company, explained in a memo to Post staff that "we are sending this notice not because any recipient has done anything improper or unlawful. However, given what has taken place in London, we believe that taking this step will help to underscore how seriously we are taking this matter."

The legal team told employees that it "must preserve and maintain all documents and information" pertaining "to unauthorized retrieval of phone or personal data, to payments for information to government officials."

24 wrenchwench  Fri, Jul 29, 2011 3:42:58pm

Is there a handy list of the 22 Republican noes?

I googled that question, and the first return was this:

Federalist No. 10 (Federalist Number 10) is an essay written by James Madison and the tenth of the Federalist Papers, a series arguing for the ratification of the United States Constitution. It was published on Friday, November 23, 1787, under the pseudonym Publius, the name under which all the Federalist Papers were published. The essay is the most famous of the Federalist Papers, along with Federalist No. 51, also by Madison, and is among the most highly regarded of all American political writings.[1]

No. 10 addresses the question of how to guard against "factions," or groups of citizens, with interests contrary to the rights of others or the interests of the whole community.

Like magic.

Interesting...

GOP Sen. Thune: Tweaked Reid Plan Probably Won’t Be Filibustered, Could Pass House

Appearing this afternoon on Fox News, Sen. John Thune (R-SC) said that if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) brings his debt ceiling plan up, it will get a vote in the Senate. In other words, enough Republicans would support Reid to prevent a filibuster. Thune also suggested that, if the Reid plan was “strengthened” it could collect 216 votes in the House, enough for passage.

Our next door neighbor down in Austin was from Nigeria. I never asked his last name, because I figured I wouldn't be able to pronounce it anyway. We got along well, the two families.

The last day, he came over to say goodbye, and finally we asked his last name.

Yeah, it was hard to pronounce. It meant, he told us proudly, "Death." As in, "Death is final, so take care of stuff right now."

I'm really glad that I hadn't known I was living next to Death.

Which leaves the country … where?

It leaves us hoping to God that 30 House Republicans will join 187 Dems to pass a Reid/McConnnell compromise bill on Monday and save us from disaster. Given that The Club For Growth, Limbaugh, Palin and the Tea Party are threatening suicide primaries against any GOPer who steps out of line, I think we are all fucked. For Christs's sake, they are actually threatening a primary against wingnut idiot Allen West! Fucking Allen West! All because he supported Boehner yesterday...

I think this one goes all the way to Depression 2.0

The economy has been functionally stagnant for 6 months and we have a round of stagflation not seen since the 1970s. 50 years from now, historians will point to this week in our history as an example of when the country began to implode.

The answer to raising the Debt Ceiling and what is going to happen, what the GOP really want is for the POTUS to go unilaterally and raise the ceiling himself. So the next few months they go at it in court.

On the other hand, Reid's plan pushes the next debt ceiling date till after the elections. It makes the accepting the results of the second catfood commission optional. It allows deficit reduction through closing of loopholes in existing tax law. Oh, and it doesn't have a requirement that a pesky constitutional amendment pass both house and senate before any other action is taken.

By the way, the CBO didn't trash it. It isn't great but it came off with a better score than any of the Boehner plans.

That said, I don't figure the Reid plan as is can get out of the Senate. It's almost certain to pick up some of the Boehner plan elements.

I still believe he's done as Speaker, either now or later.

it's unbelievable...a lot can go wrong

The Eagles have always been great when it comes to the cap. That is why when the new cap was mad they were about $10-15 million below it. While the Boys were about $1-5 million over it. So I don't think the birds need to worry about it. It just seems as though they are going to trade Samual, which will take out around $30-40 million if they don't keep him.

When will Obama going to raise it unilaterally?

1. Probably not unless/until all other avenues have come up empty.
2. As I understand it, he can't do it until it's a true emergency. I take that to mean he can't do it until after we default.
3. I think they take themselves way too seriously. As to their power - I don't think they even have a semblance of a grasp on it.

Tarkloon/Randall Gross put up a good Krugman editorial:

The president, as we’ve seen, was willing, even eager, to strike a budget deal that strongly favored conservative priorities. His health reform was very similar to the reform Mitt Romney installed in Massachusetts. Romneycare, in turn, closely followed the outlines of a plan originally proposed by the right-wing Heritage Foundation. And returning tax rates on high-income Americans to their level during the Roaring Nineties is hardly a socialist proposal.
.....
The problem with American politics right now is Republican extremism, and if you’re not willing to say that, you’re helping make that problem worse.

Fox is one of the leading channels in the cable news market in the United States, and disseminates news with a conservative republican and patriotic approach.

Why do you have a recycling symbol on your product if you so adamantly criticize environmentalists and the green movement?

Having a recycling symbol on each Two If By Tea™ bottle is merely for labeling and industry requirements. It is not meant to be a political statement of any sort or an attempt to "Save the Planet" as many environmentalist wackos would suggest.

Another news of the World update. All we want now is names!!

NoW investigator Glenn Mulcaire 'told to hack'

The private investigator at the centre of the News of the World phone-hacking row says he "acted on the instructions of others", his lawyers have said.

In a statement, Glenn Mulcaire's legal team said any suggestion he acted unilaterally was "untrue".

It comes as the mother of murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne said she was "very distressed" after being told she may have been phone hacked by Mulcaire.

Then-editor Rebekah Brooks said it was "unthinkable" anyone at the paper knew.

Voicemail messages

Mulcaire was jailed in 2007 after admitting to phone hacking while he was working for the paper.

The statement said: "As an employee he [Mulcaire] acted on the instructions of others.

"There were also occasions when he understood his instructions were from those who genuinely wished to assist in solving crimes.

"Any suggestion that he acted in such matters unilaterally is untrue. In the light of the ongoing police investigation, he cannot say any more."

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police said it is to investigate allegations of computer hacking.

A new team of officers are to join Operation Weeting, the investigation into alleged phone hacking, to investigate the claims.

Rest of this story via the link.

He's not orange. He has a staffer crush up 40 lbs of Cheetos, which are then spread onto a yoga mat that has a larger-than-life photo of Nancy Pelosi silk screened on it. He takes 4 shots of Maker's Mark in rapid succession, then rolls around nude on the yoga mat, crying and crying and crying until he falls asleep. It's a therapeutic technique adapted from Marcus Bachmann's gay-fixin' therapy.

The House will reconvene Saturday to vote on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) budget plan, and will vote on Reid's proposal under a suspension of House rules.

That vote will take place despite a request from a House Democrat that the House not set up the bill as a suspension vote, which will require a two-thirds majority to pass and thus all but assures defeat in the House.

I think I should elaborate on what Denmark and Sweden did. Also a hero is the German Civil Servant who got the ball rolling to save these lives. As TVTropes tells it.

Far more awesome, Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz: A German civil servant, he's informed that the deportation of Jews from Denmark is about to occur. So he goes to Sweden on a pretext of serving Germany, arranges for Jewish evacuees to be accepted there, then goes back, and phones up a member of the Danish government about what's about to occur and the promise from Sweden. The result? An impromptu telephone network is set up by the Danes to call up everyone with a Jewish-sounding name and warn them, evacuations are arranged and in a national crowning moment of awesome, the Danish population manage to make sure 99% of Denmark's Jews survive the Holocaust - an estimated 93% of that due to Duckwitz's timely warning.

My primary non-attendance regrets are that I never saw Zappa in 72, 74, 77, 81, 82, or 88. Also, that I never saw King Crimson in 198-anything.

King Crimson, Yes, Procol Harum have all been to Edmonton, and I missed them all.

NO, IT IS THE FUCK NOT!

Destroy the family? I have yet to see any legislation that prevents opposite-sex couples from marrying, having their 2.1 children, owning a house with a white picket fence, having 2 Caravan's in their garage, taking their children to church, and taking a family vacation.

Destroy the family? What I do see is a pack of sexually repressed individuals trying to legislate their religious utopia on the rest of the country, in the name of stopping Islam and Communism.

You want a strong country with strong families --stop preaching to the rest of us, cheating on your wives and pay your bills.

Slash is responsible for that horrible piece of crap, "Sweet Child Of Mine".

It alone is the reason why Guitar Center should have a policy stating that teenage males who intend to mess with a guitar must first:

1) demonstrate that they are capable of recognizing when a guitar is out of tune,
2) demonstrate that they are capable of tuning an out-of-tune guitar
3) demonstrate that if they intend to play that stupid riff from "Sweet Child Of Mine", they are capable of playing it at least 80% accurately

Hahaha ain't that the truth. Good Jeezus I hated that song. After Top 8 radio was done with it, I bet they hated it, too.

I just saw Saturday Night Fever for the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago... I still don't get it.

Disco boy! run to toilet and comb your hair.
Disco boy! pucker your lip, and check your shoulders,
Cause some dandruff might be hiding there.

Disco boy, you're the disco king, aw the
Disco thing made you think someday that you
Just might go somewhere.

Disco girl, you're outa sight, you need a
Disco boy, to treat you right.
Hell do a little dance, take you home tonight.
Leave his hair alone, but you can kiss his comb.

The droozly tempo suggests the prevalence of quaaludes as the chemical recreational aid of choice among persons accustomed to experiencing sexual incompetence under disco circumstances. Later on, disco persons discovered cocaine, and later incarnations of the tune accommodated the new-found fidgeting.

Sorta.

I have Fallout 3, so I know what you are talking about. The weird body-rubber band glitch is hilarious, if disruptive.

Which brings us to this infamous glitch from New Vegas:

Just found one new thing in Mac OS X Lion that's really annoying. They went and hid the Library in the the User folder, where all the Safari cache is held. I can unhide the folder now, but not retroactively in Time Machine, so trying to see if I can dig up the cache from the 25th means restoring my entire User folder. We'll see if it's in there but it's going to take awhile.

Boo... that song epitomizes everything wrong with Kiss... if we weren't convinced Kiss sucked until Beth... Beth confirmed it.

Kiss epitomizes everything that is wrong with everything.

Yet, I must admit that I somehow like the songs "Deuce", "She", and "100,000 Years". Still, I wish they'd all died in a terrible tour bus accident in 1979 or so.

re: #626 Mr Pancakes

Jello Biafra... one of my heroes of the 80's.

One of the most talented lyricists ever, and certainly the most under-appreciated.

disturbingly relevant

Cold concrete apartments
Rise up from wet black asphalt
Below them a few carcasses
Of the long gone age of privacy

It takes a scary kind of illness
To design a place like this for pay
Downtown's an endless generic mall
Of video games and fast food chains

One by one the little houses
Are bricked up and condemned
A subtle hint to move
Before the rats move in

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Those new kids at school seem cool
But dad says not to talk to them
'Stick to your old friends
They're not our kind'
So now there's lots of fights

So many people I know
Come of age tense and bitter-eyed
Can't create so they just destroy
'C'mon!
Let's set someone's dog on fire!'

Empty plastic
Culture slum suburbia
Is a war zone now
Sprouting the kinds of gangs
We thought we'd left behind

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Kids at school are taking sides
Along color and uniform lines
My dad's gone and bought a gun
He says he's fed up
With crime in this town

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere
This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Anywhere
Everywhere
I hope I'm gone before it explodes

I linger late at night
Waiting for the bus
No amount of neon jazz
Could hide the oozing vibes of death

My dad's a vigilante now
He's bringing home these weird-ass friends
Like the guy who fires blanks at his TV
When Kojak's on
Or the guy who shows off his submachine gun
To his sixteen-year-old daughter's friends
Whose sense of pride and hope
Is being in the police reserve

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere
Everywhere

Yeah see, I never understood the dudes into Kiss who hated disco.

Kind of like the stoners into metal who hated new wave/newro and whatnot.

I was like, dude, your people wear skintight bright colored spandex pants showing their stuff, extensions in their hair, and more makeup than I do. They're more of a man because they use a guitar with a distortion box and Boy George's band doesn't? rotfl!

So many of those bands were such put-ons, but the kids fell for it. It was all contraband to me, so all of it was a big, ridiculous, wonderful showbiz spectacle.

costumes aside, you can't fake good guitar work :D

Is Tipper Gore anything like Cow Tipping?

That's I think of when I hear her name.

In case you are completely unaware (and there's no shame in that):

In the mid-1980s, a group of bored Washington housewives including Tipper Gore (wife of Al), Susan Baker (wife of Secretary of State James Baker) and others took it upon themselves to cleanse the country of dirty and/or 'satanic' rock music. Crime, drugs, Iran-Contra, AIDS, the last gasps of the Cold War, OH NO PROBLEM, the REAL SCOURGE is TWISTED SISTER.

It all started (as the legend goes) because Tipper Gore became absolutely unglued at the idea that her precious little snowflake daughter heard that Evil Corruptor of Youth, PRINCE, saying something about masturbation on one of his albums.

Thus, is was imperative that the full force of the US government be brought down upon the creeping evil of rock music.

It was stupidity like you can barely imagine.

I'd tell the whole wretched tale, but:
1) nobody cares, as it was 25 years ago
2) I'm waaay too lazy

Based on these pics, seems like he’s spot on, though he should have added, HAMAS Youth camp, too. As we all know, Nazis boycotted Jews and were Jew-killers. And these hateful, privileged brats at the camp boycotted Jews and sided with Jew-killers. I don’t condone violent massacres on innocent civilians, and I condemn what Breivik did. He is a terrorist just like the 9/11 hijackers, Hezbollah, HAMAS, and Nidal Malik Hasan [the U.S. Army major charged with killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in November 2009]. But what goes around comes around. You support terrorists against innocent civilians in Israel, then you get attacked by terrorists who are upset with your support.”

You fucking bitch.

Hetero male here. My greatest concern w/r/t homos was wondering if my co-worker and not so close neighbor had a ride to work after his car took a shit.

Not to mention the fact that her saying that the killings were at least partially deserved "blowback" is the kind of thing Ward Churchill used to say. It was hideous when he said it and its still hideous when she says it.

One of the things I find the most disturbing about her is, she seems like the type with something to prove to white Christian National Vangurd types. So yeah, let's be a bottle blonde (I'm sure she's covering up gray by now - not a slam on her age, she just doesn't look natural and that's an old pic of her on her site...anyway), let's be a bottle blonde, let's rail on Black men, Muslim men, Black Muslim men and anyone else Christian-supremacist white nationalists like Anders hates.

Maybe then, they'll think of me as one of the few good ones. ///

Juan Williams / Howard Kurtz interview:

[Link: www.thedailybeast.com...]

So News Corp. execs have told him he can't have a show on FNC because of some stereotype they have about African-Americans and because they feel their White viewership won't tune in for someone with different color skin than theirs?

1. I am dubious about the stereotype and about the assessment of the white viewership.

2. Even if Fox buys into both, you'd think they'd give Williams a show as a public relations ploy.

Shouldn't a conservative broadcaster be going out of its way to appeal to middle-class American blacks? Is Fox conservative and dumb or just amoral?

3. This is yet another indication of Newscorp's dysfunction. Success breeds arrogance; arrogance breeds complacency; complacency breeds stupidity. Their phone hacking is looking ever less surprising. Surely there is more where that came from.

Meant to add, nobody falls for that kind of pandering. We don't even fall for subtle pandering. This is why our voting bloc is so deeply resented by the GOP; not even the dumbest people in the world are easily fooled. //

Yea, he changed the rules. IIUC, until Hammond convinced white big bands to hire black musicians, there were no recordings of a mixed race performance since Jimmy Rogers, "Any Ole Time."

But to your point of Hammond thinking about what he was doing.
Hammond got it!! When he heard (put on your Kerouac hat) Benny Goodman, Charlie Christian, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen; he got
it!! Hammond didn't think - he knew.

Yeah, it's still hard to suss out who was hiring whom, but you may be thinking of Teddy Wilson, who was an early integrator, with Benny Goodman's band. I don't think Hammond got him that job, but Hammond was paying attention to where the talent was, and thus who the trendsetters were.

Segregation made no sense for the arts, and especially when arts became part of commerce, not that that stopped the country from doing it. So they kind of mopped themselves into a corner. How are you going to have a headlining band, with the star members staying across the tracks and entering through the side and everyone else through the front. Lol totally unworkable, and absurd.

As for Aretha, she spent all of her life basically as a career musician, as do most Black church artists. So by the time she got "discovered", she was already a seasoned pro. All A and R people do is convince the highups that the talent will make them a mint. Hammond showed people how it's supposed to be done, if you're paying attention. He did a lot to show the entire recording industry look, these dumb conservative social policies work against the industry's bottom line. Get rid of them, make a LOT of money.
